I promise it is better. I ordered what I expected to be a philly and my husband ordered the bison burger. For an appetizer we had the cheese curds. My philly really was just dry, cold, and unseasoned ground beef served with stale fries - like that had been in the freezer and forgotten about for a year. The burger was like a premade frozen beef burger and was overly dry - and cold. His fries were the same. We saw our waiter for the initial drinks, order, and food delivery. We did not once get a drink refill, even when he saw they were empty and never brought us the check. The cheese curds were good though. read more

Great place to eat when staying at the nearby hotels. We've ate in and they have a really good salad bar. We've also had take out quite a bit and it's always hot and plenty of condiments and the things you need when you're staying in a hotel room. Highly recommend. read more

First visit since the pandemic and it was as good as ever. I had the walleye and it tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. The server, Delroy was friendly and funny. The big surprise was the revamped grocery store - you walk in and there's a full Buffalo mount. The selection seems expanded, too. And I always have to check out the gift shop. read more

Great stop in the middle of SD. NO outdoor dining- but they're happy to do takeout. I got the walleye which came with fresh green beans and wild rice. The bacon wrapped steak gave us a stomachache; the dinner buffet had two entree options, a decent salad bar and several potato options. Not very good quality for the price. It is a touristy kind of place with the expected 15 to 20 minute wait even though I was alone. The hostess was kind of gruff and didn't crack a smile during my visit. I was waited on by Bev and she was very busy but juggling it all just fine. I ordered a hot beef sandwich for $ 8.00 since I was too late for breakfast. The potatos were ok but the gravy had a very distinc taste of flour. There was a generous portion of roast beef and it was tasty. The price was good,the food average and the service from Bev the waitress was good. Being greeted by a grumpy is never a good thing when you have been on the road for 16 hours. Al's Oasis has been a fond memory since early childhood. They have never disappointed until now. From the renovations completed at the restaurant and gift shop, to the service, and food. You are no longer greeted with people that have a smile and appear genuinely happy to see you. The change in the gift shop and where you pay for your meal looks dark and uninviting. One staff working the gift shop area kept her back to everyone while talking on the phone. The food was less than impressive. The salad bar was pitiful looking and that used to be a high light. So sad to see a long-standing iconic restaurant become just another place. read more

This is probably my fifth or so visit but only the second one that I can remember. I was traveling with my mom and she insisted we stop here. I didn't find it that great. Everything looks old and dirty. And I get that it intentionally looks old. I think the only plus is that the kitchen was fast and our server was attentive. There was not much on the menu that drew my attention and the price for the salad bar was too high for what was on it. Additionally, there is a bakery/grocery store and a gift store. read more

Overall our party of 3 adults and 3 kids would rate this place "OK.". If you're looking for fine dining, this isn't the place. However, it's an adequate place to have a non- fast food meal while traversing South Dakota. I had the buffalo burger which was a bit dry, but it's what I sort of expected since I've had similar meat before, and since there's less fat in it, is does make it less juicy. I didn't find mine "greasy" though like the other reviewer. The other two adults in my party had the salad bar which had fresh tasting ingredients though overall was also OK. The apple pie with cinnamon ice cream was good. However, the custard raisin pie was not. We looked around Chamberlain and Oacoma and there wasn't a huge selection of good restaurants and the ratings weren't that great. We picked Al's restaurant and we were surprised by the salad bar, great selection of fresh greens and other choices. I had a bison burger which was delicious, I added some jalapenos for my personal flavor. The staff was friendly and very quick. The price/ value was also great. Not sure why other people complain. I didn't try their cakes however they did look delicious and I was tempted. read more

I would skip it. My hamburger tasted of a soy enhanced burger, salad was clearly premade and stored too long in a fridge that was too cold It had clearly frozen on the4 edges and thawed. Cucumber slices were frozen and thawed, cherry tomatoes were overripe and wrinkly. Water glasses were severely scratched and chipped, and in need of replacement. Imagine my surprise when a robot rolls out to serve other customers their food. There were actually two robots, but they didn't serve all customers, only a couple of tables. The customer was expected to remover their plates from the robot and touch the screen to confirm receipt. Unfortunately, the robots looked very dirty and greasy. There was food underneath our table that had been ignored. Coffee cups bragged that coffee was "still 5 cents!" but was actually 95 cents. We were unable to access the travel center on our trip because it was blocked off. Restrooms were dirty. This place needs some work, mainly a good scrubbing, replacing unserviceable glassware, and an overhaul of food prep and storage practices. read more

Not even crowded enough for the five tables around. No one to check on the orders coming out fresh from the kitchen or complete. Very quiet for a tourist trap place now. Quality was dismally filling. No one to help check out with the tab. Had to ask several times for someone to attend to us and there were two tables leaving behind us and a to go order trying to be made at that time. Waited for over 10 minutes until someone finally arrived and started to get us checked out. Then someone dressed nicely in a blouse and slacks finally came out and she decided to help the line out since it was a good growing line. Not worth the hype. Well, this was a great way to start the day on our weekend trip from Sioux Falls. For the first time here the service was excellent even though there was a party of 20 ladies that got here once it opened at 7am. Large area of restaurant and shops. I had the Old Settlers Breakfast and my wife ordered the 3 egg omelet plate. The Settlers' breakfast is two eggs, 3 large strips of bacon, and 2 large pancakes. The pancakes filled the 8" diameter plate!! Ooh, were they delicious. Hot syrup was brought to the table rounding out a delicious blend of eggs, bacon, and pancakes. My wife's Omelet was freshly made and had a nice flavor of butter. Hash browns and toast completed the plate. All in all, it was a wonderful breakfast not far from the Missouri River. We'll have to stop on the way back. Forgot. Ordered a slice of the Lemon Cream Cheese pie. Wow. That was delicious. Who says you can't have pie for breakfast. Thanks. read more

It was food. I had 'broasted' chicken, which was just kinda dry crunchy breaded fried chicken. The green beans for comparison had no crunch. The salad bar was sparse compared to most, but had some desert and fruit. The roll was okay. The fries were shoestring and dry/bland. I wasn't overly impressed or offended. Came out about $20 a person after the 10% for showing my hotel key from next door. Left full and only had to walk across the parking lot, which was the selling point after driving all day. Don't waste your time. I like to buy local when I travel and I like roadside attractions. We saw several signs for this place all along the highway. We stopped only to find out they are only open from 11 am until 7 pm during the summer. Not sure who made that business decision, IMO not very wise for the summer travel season. read more
