We were passing through Green Bay from Michigan to Indiana and stopped here for a late lunch. Everything was so very good. The fries are great! Plus the hamburgers and milk shakes are nothing to disappoint. We would definitely stop by again. Sorry that there aren't any photos! P.S. They have a nice little outdoor seating area. When Al's opened for business in 1934 the Green Bay Packers Football Club was only 15 years old and Curly Lambeau was the head coach. To stay in business for 91 years you know they must be doing something right. I stopped in here for lunch on July 20th 2025 with eight friends. We are all Bears fans and were a little apprehensive about stopping in Green Bay - but I'm so glad we did. Al's is a quaint little diner, but it was a beautiful day and Al's has an inviting outdoor biergarten so we opted to eat outside. I had Al's 1/4 pound Classic with America Cheese and a side of fries. The burger was good but a buddy and I agreed it was a little too salty. The fries were delicious. Service was friendly and quick. We stopped in here for lunch recently and had a great experience. There's not a ton of seating (four booths and seats at the counter), but we didn't have to wait long for a table. The chocolate shake, burgers, grilled cheese and cheese curds were great. The staff were friendly and welcoming. They charge a 3% fee for credit cards so bring cash if you want to avoid that, but they have an ATM. We will definitely be back. read more

We were passing through Green Bay and the timing and location only allowed for one place for us to try Fried Cheese Curds, and that was at Al's. This unassuming spot had an old timey feel inside and the waitress was really friendly when we walked in right when they opened. We ordered the cheese curds to go and wow! These were soft, pillowy, ooey, gooey, and melty. And you can tell the cheese was great quality too! When I go out of town I'm so anal and I do all the planning from my rooms, attractions, meals etc and I like to find hidden gems with history when possible and Al's has this old neon sign that says since 1934 so you know that's where I'm going because it's all about the experience for me. Is this the best burger place in Green Bay WI, probably not but it's historical value makes it the best experience for me. I grabbed take out to enjoy in my fancy room, nothing like fast food in a $200 luxury room in a 100 year old hotel, just kidding the hotel has two bars that I wanted to try before dinner and I didn't want to drink and drive after bar hopping. The place has all the 1934 charm stripped away if it's the original location with an old generic remodel. It has booths with the old school stool lunch counter. I opted for the 1/4 pound deluxe burger which is bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickle and Mayo that's comes with a side and frys were my choice. To my surprise it looked very good with fresh toppings and bun, more like a craft burger and not some smashed flat burger. The frys were excellent because they were seasoned frys and seasoned nicely with a crispy outer and soft center, just perfect. The simple cheese burger also was very good with a fresh bum, fresh toppings including leaf lettuce, iceberg has no reason to be on any sandwich. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with the quality/freshness of the cheese burger and frys from a burger shop that's 88 years old in downtown Green Bay WI, it's an experience and a great memory. read more

My eldest son and I had something to do in the Green Bay area on a Saturday outside of Packers season, so this gave me a chance to try a restaurant not near the stadium, which I wouldn't normally do on a game day. I picked Al's Hamburger Shop from my list of bookmarks due to very good looking burgers that others had posted pictures of. I ordered a double cheeseburger with just lettuce and my son ordered a cheeseburger with just bacon. We both got fries for the side. Some of the fries had too much salt and pepper, but it was easy to wipe off a little of it. Without the salt and pepper my guess is the fries would have been on the bland side, but they were good with it on them. Both of us loved our burgers. The patties were seasoned well and the buns had a nice flakiness to them. I'm sad it took me so long to stop and have one. Next time I'll try one of their delicious sounding shakes as well. read more

So I finally ate at Al's Hamburgers in Green Bay. For those who don't know of Al's, it has been around since 1938, it is rated as the best hamburger place in the state of Wisconsin. I have seen the recommendation in a few different sites. I rated it 4.5. The building, inside and out, is cute and clean. The service was excellent. The meal had a good presentation. So why not a 5? Al's is everything a diner should be. Great service with a little fun sass, good food all served up with a retro feel. I don't understand any comments about it being expensive because it's not...we had lunch for 2 and it came to a total of $20. This $5 burger is fantastic. When I am new to a place, I like to keep it simple and usually go with just onions and a pickle so I can really see how the meat tastes. Everything was on point - the meat is well seasoned, the patties are hand formed and cooked perfectly. Served on a lightly buttered/toasted bun. My guy got the same thing but added American cheese to his. We both had the same reaction- which was: yassssss! Fries and onion rings - both crispy and delicious. The onion rings were served with an out of this world horseradish dipping sauce. I did notice some other burgers coming out of the kitchen that I would definitely try on future visits. The Big Al and the Fiesta burgers both have my name on it. One note: these speciality burgers are more in the $13 range but well worth it. The size and amount of toppings you get are generous. This is NOTHING like what Al's used to be- the longstanding reputation that they lean so heavily on. Nothing in the menu that made this place an original- like summer sausage sandwiches and such. I can't imagine that anyone is still coming here because it's a good place to get a cheap, good lunch. Burger was mediocre as usual. It WAS bigger than the old burgers, but twice as much. The chili had a wierd sweetness to it. And not at all what a I'd expect from a Wisconsin diner. Added fries to my order last minute because I saw the picture on the menu. Stated such. When they came out, I said "Oh, they're not crinkle cut... the menu shows crinkle cut. That's why I ordered them." Server: "We haven't had crinkle cut in a long time" Well, I wouldn't have added them if the menu was correct. I can't even eat these coated ones. They just sat in the tray. It was definitely not a 1 star. 2 or maybe 3, but I'm countering the ridiculous 5 star reviews from Packers/ Alton Brown fans who gush just because of the name. read more

Al's is a cool little old school hamburger diner.  We dropped in here after doing a Yelp search on burgers and it was a nice, quaint find.  The kind of diner you don't often see, at least not in Chicago.  Their 1/2 lb specialty burgers (w fries) look on the pricey side at $13-$15, but wife settled on a classic single 1/4 lb burger for $6 and I had a classic 1/2 lb cheeseburger for $8.50.  These were relatively good buys and a nice lunch.  The burgers are very greasy and maybe on the bland side, but they nonetheless hit the spot for us.  They charge for lettuce and tomatoes ($0.25 each for L and T on your burger), but do give you fried onions and a pickle.  By the time you add a nice tip for the friendly server, the lunch isn't exactly cheap for an 80 year old diner, but it was sure fun!  Easy coined metered parking outside on quiet Washington St. at 25 cents for 15 minutes. read more

We stopped by Green Bay during our trip up north and was able to stop by and try this oldie place out. The place has been around for over 80 years. We had the cheese curds (so so good), corn dog basket and the beer battered cod sandwich. The corn dog was fried to a perfect level and the sausage was slightly sweet and very juicy. The cod sandwich was also flavorful, crispy but juicy. It was also relatively cheap. We had a great meal here. read more

So after 4 visits in the past 2 months I think it's fair to say I can leave a honest 5 star review. Walking into through the front doors you seem to take a step back in time. A front counter with stools, and 4 or 5 booths clinging against the back wall. No Al's can't hold an army's worth of people, but I think that's where it's charm comes from. A small venue that hosts a large appetite. Als has only left me craving more but never hungry. The portions in this tiny establishment are anything but the like. The menus is respectable, and we'll put together, the whiteboard adding a burger special to your option. Don't forget an old fashioned milk shake too! Our servers have been delightful and because of the size your sure to get attended to swiftly. I am even starting to know them by name already! Apparently this spot has been around since 1934 and somehow it isn't a must see or do in Green Bay?! During our quick two day trip in Green Bay, WI, I kept bugging my wife we needed to stop and have a burger from here. Based purely off some pictures I found off Yelp and Google Reviews, I'm actually kind of surprised this spot doesnt have more Yelp reviews. Stopped by on a Sunday morning and greeted instantly by a waitress with the wild pink hair behind the bar. Super friendly and nice. Green Bay seems to be quiet town when there's not too much going on (AKA no Packers games). They open up by 8:30am on Sundays and serve not only breakfast but the entire menu. Who has a burger at 9am in the morning... apparently I do. While you can do a classic burger or cheeseburger, they do offer a number of unique burgers as well. I felt it was only right to try the tailgate burger ~ fresh cheese curds, roasted jalepenos, a bratwust, sauteed onions, german brown mustard all stuffed between two buns and a patty. Talk about experiencing Wisconsin in a single burger. Amazing. Anyways, definitely feel like this spot is a must when in Green Bay. Al's is right out of an episode of Diners, Drive In's & Dives. A very small little hole in the wall type joint in downtown Green Bay. I "bookmarked" this place when it was under different ownership and finally made it in due to a work conference bringing me to Green Bay. Being I was on a work dining per diem I over ordered going with a 1/2 lb burger, french fries and cheese curds. After ordering and then seeing other trays coming out I realized I was going to get more than my hungry eyes were going to be able to handle. I really only wanted just a few cheese curds, but of course you can't order just a couple. When my order came out I was only given my burger and fries. I didn't complain, because I immediately noted what I had been given was all I really was going to be able to comfortably handle anyway. Three quarters of the way through my burger/fries they recognized the cheese curd omission and out they came. The server was quickly apologetic and seeing I was almost done with my burger, comped the curds. Very good burger, fries and yes cheese curds. Friendly service, even through a minor snafu that I wasn't going to call them on anyway. The place is a definite dive but in that good kind of way. read more

This unsuspecting diner is delicious! The staff is super friendly. I got the Washington Street Poutine. Warning there are no buns on this burger. It's a batty topped with fries, cheese curd and chili! They top it off with sour cream, onions and jalapenos. It sounds like a heart attack, but so worth it. It was decadent and delicious. I also got a side of cheese curds because I'm in Wisconsin and they're delicious! If you ask to split a shake they'll pour it into two glasses for you! I highly recommend the butterscotch. read more

Went on a family road trip and my oldest picked where we were going to grab dinner before making the 4hr journey home. Al's was an amazing choice, our first server was one of the best I've ever had help me. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. My only complaint was the brunette girl who took over for our original server. You should focus on your job and not bothering the guys in the kitchen, they obviously didn't want to talk to you and continually harassing them about what they did on their time off was the reason we left as quick as we did. Had she been our original server the review would have gone a different direction. She paints a bad picture for your establishment. read more

I moved here from the West Coast a year ago. I've been trying different spots in the area, and thought it was time to give this place a shot as I wanted to support a local, small business. I ordered a Fiesta Burger for pickup, due to Covid. I placed my order via Yelp and it was ready for pickup in the mentioned time slot (15min). I walked in and picked up a small paper bag. I went home to eat it, and was surprised to see that the order didn't have any fries. It's the first time I've ordered a $13 burger and haven't gotten fries (or any sides) with it. I have a $2 tip, so a $15 burger got me only the burger and no fries ‍. Now about the burger. The burger was amazing!! The bread seemed fresh, and the meat was super juicy and tasty. One of the better burgers I've had in the area. I'd rate it amongst the top 15 places I've tried around the country, and I've traveled a lot . The burger felt clean when eating it; it wasn't dripping with grease, and the ingredients seemed well proportioned. It was quite heavy for a single serving, so it could actually suffice your hunger more than once. Probably just once if you are tailgating. I would've given this place a 5 star, but I'll hold 1.5 stars due to no fries . As Yelp doesn't let me do a half star, I'll settle for 4. Still recommend this place! read more

Went to Al's Burger today around 2:30pm today with a friend. Al's is located downtown Green Bay. A close friend turned me onto this place about 2 or 3 years ago after I moved to the area. I have only been here two other times. Al's is small and has a counter. Cool older pictures of GB on the wall. I guess a few years back the place caught on fire and almost was a loss. Now onto the review. My friend and I were going to get a chocolate malt. The whole reason for going! They make them like the old days and I remember they were awesome. Well: no malt powder. No malt. Now place wasn't busy and I have to say I found two of the worker's slightest negative and not very welcoming: which is not how I remember Al's. I don't know but both just seemed short with people and customers. My friend agreed the person waiting on me and this other person were somewhat rude. Whatever.... we all have our bad days, right? We each ordered a 1/2 pound BBQ Burger. Fries and Cheese Curds. Shhhh: dont tell my doctor. Food was great! They forgot the extra BBQ sauce on the side(note up-charge is u ask for a little extra sauce). Our person we ordered from, I got her attention and asked for my bbq sauce please, which she yelled to the back for '"Extra bbq sauce for that burger I just brought out"! So like the people behind us kinda freaked and jumped outta their seat . It was kinda loud and the people behind us said to each other "Wow she scared me"! She scared me too! So at the end of the meal we got our bill. It was 32 bucks for 2 burgers, side of fries and a side of cheese curds (oh and a side of bbq sauce which was a half filled little plastic container that was very small- half full? Really? And a up-charge). That's 32 bucks without any tip. Which hey: always tip. My kids used to wait tables. Many people that wait tables get paid less than minimum wages and rely on those tips. Hey I don't care who is having a bad day while serving up the food. I still tip. We just had ice water. The burgers were good... not great. So was everything else... just so so. But a little speedy when u add the tip. Here's the deal breaker tho: they do not take your debit card. CASH ONLY. They have a cash machine there if u don't have the cash. Like they should have a sign on their door before u walk in saying that -and or- say something like when u r ready to order "Welcome to Al's have u ever been here before... bla bla bla.... and we only take cash just so u know". I know why they take cash only. They have to pay a fee to the credit card people. I was just surprised is all. I had cash. So note: bring cash for sure and avoid that atm fee. So my rating based on price, the staff not being so welcoming and higher prices I won't be going back soon. I can't give this place a five and have to go with a 32star rating which I feel is spot on. Cool little joint. Downtown, which today turned out to be a 'downer'. But there are better places that I need to 'Yelp'! I talked to a close friend after my review that took me there my first time and he said "Yeah those guys are not good anymore". He always went there. At lease 1 time a week.
