Nothing more Chicago than a dipped beef from Al's served piping hot. This place is glorious. The fries are fresh and flavorful. The beef, no matter how you order it (I prefer dipped and sans peppers) is a Chicago original that you're not going to find anywhere else. Even more impressive is the fact that the bread they use can withstand the abuse of being dunked in the juicy Italian beef goodness. Located a couple of blocks down Clark Street from Wrigley. For 10.57 i got a good tasting beef ,w /sweet peppers and cheese. Drink and fries .i think for that price the beef could have had more in it .it was the 6 inch and i left still hungry .i can get one in several other places for 650 for a combo that will fill you up well. This more a 3.5 star review, but they get 4 because its one of the very few legit Italian beefs on the north side, or at least north shore. With so many great restaurants from the Gold Coast to Rodgers Park, good Italian beef spots are hard to come by between these areas. Most of the good ones seem to be south and west of downtown. That being said, Al's still offers a good beef. Having it dipped and with sweet or hot peppers is the classic Chicago way of eating a beef sandwich. But hey this America, so if you don't like it dipped or would like it with cheese, you can go that route too and it's still pretty good. The key to a good beef is having every piece of meat very thinly sliced, and Al's never disappoints in that regard in all the years I've had their sandwiches. It's amazing how many beef joints fail in this aspect. Also if you have your sandwich dipped you need to eat it right away. The longer you wait the more messy and less delicious it will be. Having seen their Italian beef sandwich numerous times on TV, I made this a must while visiting. I had the sandwich with the giandinare just as I saw on TV. It had a nice heat. I also got the full dip. Wish I had time to try another just wet with sweet peppers. Also watched the Chicago dog being made and it looked amazing, wish I got to try that as well. I moved away from my hometown of Chicago 12 years ago, so every time I come back for a visit, I've got to get my Chicago classics on. The west coast has a few places that claim to offer Chicago style food, but they all fall way short. My chef buddy tells me this location doesn't roast their own beef like the original one on Taylor does. I haven't been to the Taylor street spot in more than a decade, though, so I can't really do a fair comparison. No matter, the beefs at this one are absolutely fantastic. Leaving the Cubs game early, we were stoked to find an Al's Beef close by! We tried the beef sandwich with the giardinier sauce and the Chicago Polish Dog (only because I don't eat hog dogs). This is a great place to go after a night out in Lakeview/Wrigley. I highly recommend getting a beef sandwich (with peppers) and fries. DO NOT GET THE CHICKEN-it's terrible. The bathroom policy is stupid (they give you a key) but other than that I have no complaints. read more

It doesn't get better than a beef from Al's and their fries are soooooo delicious, always a glutton and order the large instead of regular size lol When we lived in Florida and came home to visit, Al's was always the first stop. I was really dissapointed in Al's. I waited a long time for this wrigley one to open because it is right by my apt. I went there the night they opened (thursday) and I enjoyed the cheese fries, but the italian beef was not very good. Very dry and bland. I will give them another shot and may update this review but as it stands Portillo's is my go to italian beef spot. Al's dissapointed my on Taylor and again on Clark. I was very disappointed! Purchased a polish and an Italian beef and I like Portillo's much better! Now, let me point out that this awful experience was the Wrigley ville location, hence, the food might be better the other locations. To make matters worse, the cashier (a young Hispanic woman) Over charged me for my food. The good things is (and I hope the manger reads this review) is that I called and complained that the cashier told me "the prices had gone up." She lied. The manager stated that he was in the back (he had asked what day I was there) and that he knows which worker I was speaking of. Said he would talk to her. So I am glad the manager is proactive and I hope the young woman does not over charge anyone else. I was hoping the food would have been better, but oh well. I just ordered from here through GrubHub, and I have never been more disappointed in fast food. I ordered the Italian combo, which was tasteless and the sausage had a crumbly mouth feel , and I don't think that was beef on the sandwich. I ordered a polish for tomorrow's dinner, but since the Italian combo was so bad I threw it away and tried the polish. This thing was also tasteless and had the mealy, crumbly feel, and did not taste like any sausage I have ever had. I also ordered and tossed the hotdog, because I didn't want to chance it. The only edible item was the fries, which were greasy, but palatable. I spent over $40 on this order and am at a loss as to why this place was recommended. This is the last time, Al's will get my money, and I will be sure to share my experience with all those people who recommended this place. I guess there is no accounting for taste. read more

Stopped in for an easy order: two regular beefs with hot peppers. No one was ahead of us. After placing my order, and waiting patiently, my order was passed not once or twice, but three times by orders that included beefs. As I walked up to the counter to ask where my order was, the attendant was quick to turn his body away from me as he saw me approaching. I began to ask where my order number was, only to be ignored as I repeated my question. After a third time, the attendant sharply demanded a ticket and coyly pretended to act like he didn't know what I was talking about. So I directly asked the man who took my order earlier where it was, to which he immediately avoided any responsibility by saying "I don't handle tickets" (this is the man who takes the order and tears it off the machine and hands it over, so he does in fact "handle" tickets). Then, in plain sight I could see my order which had been sitting tucked away from the spot where they keep any of their orders. Forced to acknowledge I knew they had simply chosen to ignore my order, they handed it over. I carried the beefs home only to be further insulted not just by the fact that they had wasted my time, taken my money and treated me like an idiot...but by sandwiches which were full of seeds, had no peppers and was on stale bread. Went with my boyfriend a couple weeks ago. I think it was a Tuesday around 1:00 pm. The restaurant was pretty empty only 1-2 customers there.
