We had a great experience at Alpine shop! The team members are very attentive and their selection is pretty nice. My partner bought a jacket and I bought a hat even though I was eyeing some of their clothing as well. We will be back. It can be a bit pricey but it's very similar to REI. I came in on a weeknight to try on some hip sacks. I wasn't sure if I wanted a Patagonia or another brand and decided it was best to go in person because you never know how something like that will fit until you actually try it on. After trying on several I ended up with a 1.5 L Cotopaxi Hip Pack. It's black with some colorful accents. I wore it about 5 days later to a concert where they limit your bag size and it was very comfortable and I'm satisfied with my purchase. They have a wide breadth of different types of items although the depth can be a little lacking from trying to do so much. However, this sole shortcoming is offset by their extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff - they seem truly dedicated to helping you find what you want or need. There was a slight miscommunication issue initially and I was a little frustrated at first because we drove an hour there thinking all items would be available per my previous conversation, but at the end they worked with us in getting everything we needed. (I did take in consideration that I called 3x with my updated needs/dilemmas). They apologies right away for our inconvenience and the miscommunication, which you don't usually get anymore...I was surprised & impressed! We bought 4 full sets of snowboarding items, with only one child with me for fitting. They spent 3 hours with us discussing, finding, fitting, & educating us on just about everything regarding snowboarding. I felt like I was asking for the impossible - skis to be shipped to their location, and then bound by the next day. However, after speaking with multiple people on the phone and multiple workers at the counter, they made it happen. Customer service here is really exceptional. Cost $60 to bind flat skis since I didn't purchase from the store. They didn't have many boots left since it was close to the end of the season, but they tried their absolute best to find something that works well. We live in Columbia, but will drive the 2 hours and come back for all our outdoor needs in the future! read more

Love this place. Dangerous for the wallet! My wife and I were passing time after dinner and stopped in. I also bought my bike rack from here as well. I have a 2012 LEAF and a 2003 Prius and wanted one that would fit both cars. My wife and I brought the cars up and they took all the racks off the wall that should work and we tried them on both cars. We left the one that worked the best on the LEAF. How often do you get the full attention of an employee AND get to try all the product to make sure stuff works? From shirts, to shoes, bike stuff, and more always come away satisfied. Oh my god. This place is 100 times better than REI or the likes. Seriously, at REI you are surrounded by egotistical a-holes. This place has the opposite feeling. They have everything you need and the sales people are awesome! Eric and Elizabeth were the two I interacted with and I've never had service like this. Purchased a oldtown fishing kayak. Was supposed to come with a paddle holder and a custom fishing tackle box. When I purchased it at the Alpine shop it was not with the kayak when I call about it they said they would take care of it. I did not hear from them or the manufacture. I called back they said it had been mailed to me. I arrange to pick it up at the store couple weeks later custom tackle box and paddle holder was there for pick up. Picked it up and a custom fishing tackle box they gave me is approximately an inch and a half deep 10 inches wide and 12 inches long a clear plastic box I was clearly not a tacklebox when I asked him about this he said well there's all kinds of upgrades not a store I would care to revisit or ever will. read more

It was our first time purchasing a ski helmet, we asked the gentleman working the ski equipment area for how to determine the ideal fit for a ski helmet, he responded with "well, you put it on your head." Very condescending and didn't seem like he was pleased with our question. We do not recommend this place at all, only went here because we had a gift card, won't be returning. I needed hiking shoes for a 30 mile hike this fall and was told that Alpine Shop would help make sure I was properly fitted. Beth spent time asking me questions about the hike and my needs/wants for the shoes and found me a pair that fit perfectly. This review is really about one remarkable man. I love the store, don't get me wrong. But this, I don't want to use the word, salesperson, is a world onto himself. His name is Sy. A couple of years ago, my husband and I were going to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. We are VERY far from what I would call hikers. We decided to buy walking sticks and we were lucky enough to be helped by Sy. Helped???? Educated by him, treated to his kindness and sense of humor, and his complete lack of pushiness. And never made to feel anything but valued, despite the fact that comparing us to him was like comparing a tortoise to a rocket. Didn't matter in the least. He met us where we were-- Fast forward to this afternoon. My husband needed some walking shoes. The depth of his knowledge, practicality, common sense. Unbelievable. Plus, he was by himself in the shoe area, and I saw him deftly but kindly, balance 3 people at a time. He knows about a LOT MORE than just shoes in the store. I have been to the Alpine Shop more than any other store in STL. Well, except for grocery stores & Wal Mart (*hangs head in shame*). Their selection is amazing! Not only do they have goods for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, kayaking, running, etc, they have various brands of gear. So if you're not a fan of [the over-hyped] North Face (i.e. me), no problemo! They carry the ever-so-loved brands of Patagonia and Marmot, along with many more. It's a huge store & well laid out, but all the amazing gear can get quite overwhelming, even after many visits. Do the right thing and simply ask someone on staff to help you. They will treat you right & give you all the information you've ever wanted to know about the gear you're looking at. I have never, ever had the slightest hint of a bad experience here. With freezing temperatures on the horizon, I needed to assure my freaking out, cold-natured, born & raised Texan blood that I would, in fact, survive my first ever STL winter. So a few weeks ago, I took advantage of their 20% off sale and got a lovely Patagonia coat, Patagonia rain jacket, SmartWool socks, and Icebreaker tights & top. I was there for a couple hours while my boyfriend and the wonderful & patient staff member Amy helped me on my quest. They offer classes, excursions and events as well! Sign up for their email updates and you'll be glad you did! Upon signing up, you get a 10% off coupon. They will send e-mails at least once a month with amazing deals, coupons and store events. We love the Alpine Shop. It's the local alternative to REI and the staff knows more about the gear and really what it is used for than the big-box retailers. You can get everything for on the water or on the trail here. They offer classes throughout the year for new cyclists or kayakers, for example. The personal attention is what makes it worth the extra drive. They always have a good selection of gear for all things outdoors, and some good deals on last seasons clothes (good place to pick up a TNF or Marmot winter jacket in spring).
