Just a two-hour drive from Middleton, the journey itself became part of the experience, with the road winding alongside the river and opening onto peaceful, beautiful scenery. When we arrived, we were delighted to spot a family of three deer from our third-floor hotel window--a magical welcome to our anniversary getaway. Two of our dearest friends joined us for the celebration and booked a room at Hotel NoBo as well, making the trip even more meaningful. Sharing the getaway with them gave us memories we'll treasure for years to come. As Amex Gold members, we were delighted to receive an upgrade to a suite with an incredible view. The room was warm and inviting, featuring a cozy fireplace, a beautiful bathtub, and a wonderfully spacious bathroom. Victoria welcomed us with genuine warmth and surprised us with a thoughtful gift, making us feel special from the moment we arrived. It was the perfect beginning to our anniversary stay. The complimentary breakfast was delicious, and the surrounding area offered an abundance of scenic walks, hikes, and trails along the water. We also loved that Hotel NoBo welcomes our fur babies--a huge plus for us and our four-legged family members! We're already looking forward to returning with our friends, and next time, we hope to add whitewater rafting to the adventure. NoBo is located at the northern end of Cascade, right off 55. I has a nice curb appeal, almost a Tudor vibe. The parking lot was huge and only a fraction was being used--including, I noticed, a couple in a large, class A RV. Hopefully they received permission from management. Inside is nice, perhaps a little dated. There is a curbed staircase to the second floor with large, nice wood banisters. They have an inside pool and jacuzzi, and even an onsite restaurant, which we did not try. It is three stories high. We did have to wait for at least 10 minutes to be helped when we arrived, not because of any fault of the desk clerk, but because a woman was having an ongoing conversation about have her dog stay there. No one really acknowledged us during this time. Speaking of checking in: I really liked that, through the app, you could check in early and even choose your room, along with a digital key, such that we only really needed to check in at the front upon arrival in order to get my wife a room key, as she didn't want to download the app to get the digital key. We chose the third floor, away from the elevator, facing 55. We did have a view of the parking lot, but we also had a view of the mountains, and that was nice. Our room had two queens, which is how we normally book, because my wife is a sound sleeper and I'm not, and I don't want to bother her. The room was spacious enough. It had a dresser and a simple desk, though no paper or pen. There was no clock in the room, perhaps on purpose. There was also no mini fridge or microwave. At first we did not feel that the wall-mounted AC was doing the job, but later felt that it cooled the room just great. Of note, the beds were about as comfortable as any hotel bed I've slept in, very nice. The bathroom was small, as was the tub. The water pressure was weak, taking away from the pleasure of taking a shower. The fan was controlled by buttons next to the toilet and was on a timer. You could choose 5, 10, 15, and 30 minute durations. There was a hairdryer. Counter space was limited. There were limited electrical outlets on the nightstand and desk; I had to have devices sitting on the floor to charge. We had an issue with our hair conditioner bottle running out and mentioned it to the desk clerk. They responded immediately, so service was great. The complimentary hot buffet breakfast was definitely a weak point. Most hotel breakfasts have watery scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes and sometimes biscuits and gravy, as well as the other options, like waffles. The first morning, there was a fritata that had no flavor and was not warm. The second morning there was a small omelet with what seemed like American cheese, which I don't like. The potatoes were soggy and tasteless. The sausage patties and links were good. The biscuits were decent. Coffee was just OK. All in all, a nice stay. As far as we could see, if you want to stay in a hotel, this is the only game in town. There are motels, but staying in those places goes back to my college days. No more. Nobo is a nice hotel, reasonably priced, conveniently located, though a lakeview would have been optimal. We've stayed in McCall before, and we think we like the idea of staying in quiet Cascade and traveling up to McCall if desired, only about a 35-40 minute drive.

We farm and ranch and are not uppity people. I used to rodeo many, many years ago and stayed in some pretty questionable places, but now I can honestly say that this is by far, the worst place I have ever stayed. It wasn't worth $50.00 per night, let alone $170.00 per night. By the time the owner remembered to call me back, we were already being charged for the next day and she said it was too late to leave without keeping the money for that night and would not refund us, so we stayed. From the moment we walked in, the room reeked of musty mildew. It was so strong we went to the store to buy air freshener, but it barely helped -- the odor was baked into the room. The shower had visible mold all around the floor and base of the walls. It was black in some spots, and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The bathroom was completely impractical -- no counter space to put toiletries, and no closet or dresser anywhere in the room to store clothes. We were forced to live out of our suitcases on the floor. The chairs look like they were throwaways taken from a dumpster. The cabinet above the stove is grease stained from not being cleaned. The sponge for the kitchen sink was wet and moldy. Even the pot scrubber was separated and needed to be thrown away and replaced. There are no knives, spoons or forks. One of the worst things we found was in the bathroom cup holder: a used razor blade cover was underneath the stacked plastic cups, and the bottom of the holder was filled with what looked like dried toothpaste spit. Absolutely disgusting and unsanitary. Even the light fixtures had mold speckled across the inside and cover lenses. Everything about the room felt damp, dirty, and neglected. There was food under the edge of the bed, clearly stating that the floors had not been swept in some time. We texted the owner pictures of everything -- including the mold, the razor blade cover, and the filthy cup holder -- and received no apology, no offer to switch rooms, no refund, no discount. Nothing. To top it off, we went to get ice at 1:00 p.m. and found the office locked up with the "OPEN" sign still lit, and no one answering the door or phone. This wasn't just a dirty room -- it was an actively unhealthy and unsafe environment. It's clear the owners do not care about cleanliness, guests, or even basic hygiene standards. In the email we received for checkout, the owner asked us to leave a review so here it is. I wish I could attach photos.. Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else.

The complex is located 6 min. drive from Lake Cascade, 35-40 min drives to either Tamarack or McCall, and there are various restaurants nearby, plus Kelly's Whitewater Park is 1/2 mile away. Alpine offered the ideal setup for us, affording motel rooms, large & small lodges (more like Air B&Bs), and RV and tent spaces - plus outdoor and indoor areas for group dining, fire pits, and some limited recreation (the indoor "Pavilion"). Something for everyone! The motel rooms were upgraded, with a forest/country theme. The owner and staff bent over backwards to accommodate us in every way. We were totally pleased and highly recommend this place.

The only times we've experienced crowds is on a holiday weekend Saturday. Otherwise for skiing it's pretty tame, much more so than Bogus Basin which we avoid now. My kids have had great private and group ski lessons here. The food options are limited and we generally bring our own snacks and drinks and eat at the truck on a ski day but they do offer tasty ice cream which my kids love as a treat after a long day. We usually stop at the coffee shop every time which is pretty good but nothing to rave about. It really depends on the staff. Pizza is a good deal as a large pizza can feed our whole family lunch. We've also been in the summer and it's even more low key. You almost wonder how they stay open but man, the beauty here is just gorgeous. Renting boats through their marina has always been easy and the teens who work there are always polite. Tamarack is a resort that we will continue to support for years to come.

She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

Let me first say, I'm not generally a fan of B&B's. My generalized experience has been that I feel like I'm intruding on all of the stuffed animals that have taken up residence in a bedroom. Being a man, I generally feel out of place and confused about where to sit, and what exactly I'm allowed to touch. In the case of the Cambridge House, I actually feel like I'm at home. The house is beautifully appointed and recently renovated, so it has all of the charm of the 1916 Craftsman that it is, without all of the pains of scalding water and creaking walls that I've come to expect from older homes. There are many cozy nooks in the house and finding a nice place to read a book is a true pleasure. Breakfast is prompt, tasty, and simple and the proprietor, Sheila, is a gem. It has some nice modern conveniences like free WiFi that make it easy for me to get work done while up visiting family. There are five lovely rooms, some pictures of which I have posted here. The rates are ridiculously reasonable. In short, if you're in this part of the world, this is the only place worth staying within 100 miles. We've been coming up here for almost ten years to visit family and we've tried every hotel and B&B within that distance. This is without a doubt the finest accommodation in the area, and is in a beautiful setting with some nice walks in all directions. Highly recommend anyone traveling through, or looking to get away for a quiet weekend. You won't regret it!
