This was my first experience with Nepali food, and Portland Teriyaki And Nepali Café may have…read moreruined me because now I'm going to expect everyone else to be this good. I found the restaurant by accident after my truck broke down on the way to a car audio show. I was hundreds of miles from home, had stupidly removed all my tools because I'd cleaned the truck out for the show, and was attempting parking-lot truck surgery with a hacksaw and JB Weld. I noticed the restaurant nearby and decided that if I was going to be stranded, I might as well try something I'd never eaten before. I told them I'd never had Nepali food and asked them to introduce me to it. I had pani puri, pork momo jhol, chicken thali, and chiya. Everything was outstanding. The pani puri was a fantastic first experience, the chicken thali gave me an assortment of flavors to explore, and the chiya was excellent. But those pork momos in jhol... I planned to take pictures. Instead, I ate everything. I somehow exercised enough self-control to save ONE momo for my brother to try later. His reaction when he ate it confirmed that I wasn't simply delirious from repairing a truck in a parking lot: it really was that freaking good. I also learned that they make their food from scratch each morning, which wasn't surprising after tasting it. Everything tasted fresh and carefully prepared. What really made the experience memorable, though, was the family. They were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and kind. It happened to be their daughter's birthday, and their family was celebrating while I was there. The kids were adorable and a lot of fun, and being around this wonderful family turned what had been a miserable day into one I now remember very differently. Eventually I got my truck patched together and continued my trip. But the best thing I discovered that weekend wasn't at the car audio show I drove 700 miles to attend. It was Nepali food in a parking lot where my truck happened to break down. Go here. Try something unfamiliar. And whatever else you order, get the momos.

We started with the chicken momos, veggie momos, and bhel, and also shared a thukpa. We had originally planned to order the mutton thali as well, but we were so full by then that we decided to save it for another visit. The owner and staff were incredibly personable and took the time to chat with us about the restaurant and the dishes, which made the experience feel warm and welcoming. The food overall was fresh and flavorful. The gravy with the chicken momos was especially delicious. I personally didn't enjoy the veggie dumplings very much, and the thukpa felt just okay to me. Still, our friends spoke very highly of several other dishes, so I do think this is a place worth revisiting. I'm hoping to come back and end up just as enamored with it as many of the other reviewers seem to be.

We arrived on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and there were already some customers, but overall it was not busy. The staff greeted us right away and took us to our booth. The ladies were very accommodating with my friend's toddler by helping us get a child seat, a kid's drink, and a cute set of Peppa Pig training chopsticks. Needless to say, the kid loved it. One thing worth mentioning is their decoration. It's definitely meant to be maximally decorated with cuteness. On their feature wall, they had floor-to-ceiling shelves displaying Dragon Ball figurines. The rest of the restaurant was decorated with a lot of cute cat decorations. Also, there's no way you would miss the moving ramen advertising light box as it pulls the noodles up and down, grabbing your full attention. Seriously, I could stare at that machine for days. We ordered a black garlic ramen, miso ramen, and a chicken stir-fried noodle, and liked them all. The black garlic ramen has a layer of black garlic oil on top, making it look much darker and intimidating. To our surprise, the garlic flavor was subtle, so it was easy to eat. My miso ramen had a rich broth with two generous portions of chashu, with various toppings including corn, bamboo, wood ear mushrooms, and green onion. I had no problem finishing the entire bowl. We also got a bowl of stir-fried chicken noodles, and it was very generously portioned and tasted good. It was savory with a bit of sweetness. It was a big hit with my friend's toddler, as she kept asking for more. Overall, we liked this ramen shop. Not only does it have good food, it also has fun decorations to keep your eyes busy.
