Charcuterie platter. Generous portions of locally cured pork.

I was surprised that there wasn't a more detailed recent review of Alpenrose during my search for a nice Swiss restaurant near the Renaissance Tower where we were staying. I was even more surprised that it seemed to be a best kept secret after having an absolutely lovely dinner there with three others. I searched online and saw a few reviews that were either years-old or not very descriptive. So I've decided to set things to right and share the experience of our wonderful evening. First - Alpenrose does take credit cards and cash (contrary to a previous post), so rest easy on that note. Reservations can be made online or by calling as their staff speaks fluent English. The restaurant is located at the Quellenstrasse stop on the #4 tram so it's easy to get to. We got there a little early but the staff had already reserved a table for us and greeted us warmly. Eomil was our waiter and he helped us get settled with water and other beverages. We perused the menus and decided to share a variety of starters - a charcuterie platter with an delectable assortment of meat and pickles along with melted Gruyère-topped bread on a bed of tomato ragout. Selecting the entrees took a bit more work but one landed on the Ravioli with cheese and sage butter, two people opted for the Juure Mocke vinegared beef - one with a salad and the other with spaetzle and for me, the Swiss Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and creamy mushroom gravy. When the dishes arrived, our conversation turned to a low hum as we enjoyed our meal with quiet appreciation. The Ravioli were perfect puffs of cheese with an amazing sage butter and nutmeg sauce. Don't let the description of the Juure Mocke "vinegared beef" scare you. It's well-braised, with balanced flavors of red wine and vinegar. I had the meatloaf. I haven't had such comfort food like this in a long time and was so happy to indulge. The meatloaf was well-seasoned, baked perfectly, accompanied by the most delicate, delectable puréed potatoes and the mushroom cream sauce that went perfectly with everything. There was also a side dish of roasted vegetables for us to share which seemed like an afterthought but was the perfect accompaniment for all dishes. Then came time for dessert. You'd think we'd politely opt out since we ate so much until this point, but we each indulged in ice cream or rather a creamy sorbet - buttermilk ice cream with fruit compote or the icy buttermilk champagne ice cream. All were the perfect way to end a superb meal. Our thanks to Eomil and the staff for their wonderful service, great food and a perfect way to end our stay in Zurich!

As it was our first time eating raclette, we asked our server to walk us through the menu. Lily was exceedingly helpful in explaining the differences in cheeses and their flavors, and she was also very attentive and checked in on us throughout the meal. I noticed that her welcoming demeanor was also shared by her colleagues who were waiting on the other tables around us. My family took Lily up on her recommendations, and we ordering one Klara and one Willi, each with a side of sausages, as well as one original tarte flambé and one vegi tarte flambée. The food was all very delicious!! My personal highlights from the meal were the sausage dipped in the Willi cheese along with the onions and potatoes that were served with the dish. The tartes also had very thin, yummy crusts topped with raclette cheese. The side of pickles provided a tangy contrast to the rest of the meal which I liked. We ended our meal with a warm chocolate cake and lemon sorbet. I'm not really one for alcohol, so I found the vodka in the sorbet to be a bit too strong for me. However, the chocolate cake with the jam and vanilla ice cream was very good and had just the right amount of chewiness. I wish that I could replace my local Cheesecake Factory with a Raclette Factory instead so that I could enjoy Swiss cheese melted over bread, sausages, and potatoes all the time. Oh well, perhaps it's just another excuse to visit Switzerland again one day :)

The popular Wiedikerli dish was pan fried sausage with lean pork, served with savory gravy with a side of Rosti. This was a 10/10 last meal that made my last night. The dessert was mostly okay, basic but I won't discount the main course and the delicious local swiss beer on tap! Looking forward to coming back one day!

Yelp Review 2026 #48:…read more Housed in an old armory, Zeughauskeller is a popular restaurant for mostly tourists. It does get pretty busy so, reserving a table would be the smart thing to do. Unless, you walk in during odd hours. Swiss food is not popular for being tasty and having bold flavors. Unless you intend to just eat cheese and chocolate, Swiss food is rather forgettable. Highly influenced by German cuisine, expect things like wienerschnitzel, bratwurst, pork shank, etc. Sausage with Potato Saiad: All their sausage is served with potato salad but you can sub it out with French fries or rosti. The sausage was nice. The potato salad was surprisingly good. 4/5 Cordon Bleu: You get a choice between veal and pork. I chose pork. The description on their menu says "tender pork escalope, filled with ham and SPICY Gruyère cheese, fried crispy". There was no spice at all. LOL. The ham was probably 2 thin slices. There are other Swiss restaurants in Zurich that makes better cordon Bleu. 3/5 The service was quite slow. We waited for our server to come over. They sent the only English-speaking server to handle like 7 tables. It's definitely a one and done. Come here for the vibes, not for the food.

When we arrived, they surprised us with the cutest little cozy nook at the front of the restaurant. We had a great view of the scenery outside and could watch people walk by, which made the whole experience feel really special. We were greeted right away and had our drink orders taken. There was a small mix-up where my boyfriend ordered one espresso martini and two came out, but it honestly wasn't a big deal at all. We started with the beef carpaccio, which was absolutely delicious. For our main dishes, my boyfriend ordered the truffle pasta and I ordered the bolognese. Everything was amazing. The bolognese was rich and comforting, and you could really taste how fresh the tomatoes and sauce were. But the truffle pasta was hands down the star of the night. It was SO good that I immediately wished I had ordered it myself. Perfect flavor, great portion, just overall incredible. The staff also checked in on us throughout the meal and made sure we were enjoying everything. We ate so much that we didn't even have room for dessert, even though the menu had some tempting options. This is honestly some of the best pasta I've ever had. If they had a location near me at home, I would be there all the time without question. Highly recommend.

Yelp Review 2026 #64:…read more I'm not vegetarian and definitely not vegan. But I will dabble with the veg from time to time. Hiltl is popular for being the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. Here's information I will share that I wish was available before planning to come here. You must make a reservation for lunch/ dinner because that's when they're busy. Breakfast is for walk-ins and they don't do reservations. Hop on their website and be sure you're on the right location because they have several within a 2-mile radius...some on the same street. I went here to try their breakfast buffet. I wasn't sure how busy they got for breakfast so, I got here at 6:30am because I got the wrong information online! They open at 7am. Different locations have different hours. Check their website for actual hours and don't trust review site information because it's wrong! They're not busy for breakfast at all. There's 2 ways to do their buffet. You can pay a fixed price and fill your plate multiple times or go and fill your plate once and pay based on the weight of your food - you get free bread. I did the pay-by-weight option. I have a whole day of eating planned so, I wasn't about to fill up for breakfast. When they opened at 7am, they were still putting the food out one by one. By 7:20, all the food was out which was fine. I was in no rush. The spread includes fresh fruits, cheeses, butter, margarine, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, mango mousse, mango chia pudding, banana chocolate brownie crumble, a pear dessert (with cream, vanilla and orange), rosti, scrambled eggs, potato salad, tomato and mozzarella salad, beets, chickpeas, olives, couscous, corn salad, olives, asparagus, green peas, feta cheese, hardboiled eggs, curry salad, dolmades, broccoli and edamame, artichoke salad, bulgur salad, tabbouleh, orecchiette tofu salad, Thai salad, hummus, guacamole, muhammara, etc. They have 6 types of bread. Slice a piece and toast it yourself. Vegan and vegetarian food tend to taste strongly of coconut/ coconut milk and I don't like that. My favorites from the buffet include chocolate mousse, mango mousse, banana chocolate brownie crumble, dolmades, asparagus, orecchiette tofu salad, and Thai salad. I got a mango lassi to drink which I didn't like. It had curry powder. Service was pleasant. The restaurant was clean.

Animal Style French Fries were a good try. Def not like the original but so far from home it was a nice find. This restaurant isn't for Americans. Way too expensive for what we eat all the time but I compare this place to the Melting Pot in the US. That place is so overpriced but it's amazing to get your cheese fondue fix. I can't imagine Swiss people coming to the US and eating at our expensive version of cheese fondue. Service was ok. It was super busy so can't really complain but I could tell our waiter was super annoyed with our audacity of showing up , with no reservation, and willingness to wait. And for some dumb reason you can't order "The Threesome" (or Hattrick) with a group of 5 people. 4 apparently is ok but we had 5. Cannot imagine why if 3 people order the same thing it's an inconvenience for the restaurant but DON'T DO IT or again your waiter will show his annoyance.
