    Hi friend!
    Cathy C.

Who knew the Portland area has alpacas? Anyone?? Well, i happened to stumble upon an article that recommended visiting an alpaca farm and 100% had a great time (look at their faces.. come on). Arriving on a Saturday around noon, we were surprisingly the only visitors. Score! We had one of the worker's undivided attention, and she gave us a lovely introduction to these adorable animals. Super informative talk, and we just had a nice chat overall. Our very own tour guide! They have a small gift shop with plenty of souvenirs for you to purchase. For $5, we also purchased a bag of food to feed three of their boys. So. Cute. One of them sneezed (?) right in front of me, and that's probably the only time I'm okay with a creature doing so. They are also doing their part in the pandemic situation; wiping down the bins, wearing masks, providing hand sanitizer. Two really lovely women! If you have some time in your day to travel the 40ish minutes south of Portland, I would recommend to come here to learn about their alpacas! Also, because these adorable animals are so skiddish, no outside animals allowed.

If you love the idea of hanging out with alpacas, look no further than Alpacas at Marquam Hill. It is seriously one of the most unique experiences I've had. To start off, take the tour! That is an absolute must. Not only do you learn a lot of the alpaca industry, but the interaction with the alpacas makes this tour super unique. You basically get to feed and walk with alpacas. That alone makes this tour worth it. Make sure to reserve, because spots for the tour fill up! We were lucky enough that there were cancellations, that allowed us to reserve spots. The owners are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely one of the highlights of trip!

Fun stop on our way home from The Oregon Garden in Silverton! Down the gravel driveway is a parking area in front of the store and barn. The owners bring in about 6 alpaca for visitors to feed. The pellet food bags are $4 each (snack size ziploc bags). The owners were very friendly and shared information on alpacas and even had some bags of fleece to let us touch. The alpacas all have very unique personalities...the owners shared their experiences with specific ones. The store is full of handmade alpaca fleece items, including blankets, scarves, gloves, ornaments, etc. There was a variety of alpaca yarn for sale as well. They also give private tours. Check out their website for more information. Would highly recommend if you want to get up close and personal with an alpaca!

An absolute gem in Oregon and the highlight of my vacation! There are sooooo many alpacas here and they're so cute!! You can even buy a bag of food for $5 and feed them :") The alpacas are very responsive and love the food and are very friendly, even though they fight one another. The gift shop has a lot of souvenirs made from the alpacas in the farm. Such a fun place to visit!

My sister always plans an amazing time for us while we're visiting on vacation; THIS plan she made was spectacular! Our visit was very hands on, along with up close and personal. Our little girl was ecstatic that she got to walk an alpaca, we had the opportunity to sit and feed alpacas, my husband got kisses from an alpaca and I, well, I got sneezed on, not only once, but twice by an alpaca. The owners gave us their time, we never felt rushed or in their way. They were kind, knowledgeable, informative, and funny from the beginning to end. The shop was adorable with memorabilia options that fits all budget ranges. Our little girl is now adding to her list of animals that she wants; an alpaca. Thank you for this opportunity. HiGhLy Highly recommended!

This was a return trip for us! The first trip and was so great we couldn't wait to share the experience with family visiting from out of town. The tour is informative and hands-on, alpacas are cute beyond words, the facilities are impeccably clean, the owners are friendly and inviting, and the store is a perfect place to indulge yourself with amazingly soft alpaca goods. We recommend a tour, a shopping spree, and then food and drinks at the Markquam Inn.

My experience here at Alpacas at Marquam Hill Ranch exceeded the expectations I had. We decided to stop by because we saw some YouTube videos that Oregon was known for alpacas and this ranch was on the way to our road trip destination. You don't have to reserve anything or pay an entry fee to see the alpacas. But they do offer tours which we wish we could have done if our group was not on a time crunch on our road trip. They also sell alpaca food to feed the alpacas for $5 which is totally worth it and you should get. Feeding alpacas is actually more fun than it sounds. They give you plenty of food to give out. I'd say our group spent a little an hour here just taking pictures, feeding, and petting the alpacas, and checking out their cool gift shop with neat alpaca gear made from alpaca wool. I had no idea alpacas were incredibly soft. The staff there were super welcoming as well. Super knowledgable and you can tell that they love what they do. It's a 45 minute drive from Portland, but if you happen to be in the area or looking for things to do while traveling south from Portland, I highly recommend checking this place out for a unique fun time.

located in the countryside outside of portland is this hidden jewel. What an amazing experience you should not miss regardless of your age. Our experience was such a joy shared with our family ages ranging from 7 years old to 80 ! Each experienced the wonder and beauty of these animals that was enhanced by the opportunity to learn about them in depth followed by sitting among them as we feed and touched these sweet beauties. It was truly hard to walk away but we ladies were consoled by Shopping! On the ranch is a gift shop that offers not trinkets but beautiful alpaca clothing...... sweaters, scarves, gloves, hats and the sweetest stuffed Teddybears and alpaca's just to mention a few things. We look forward to our next visit and shopping day!

We brought our 2 older teens (16&17) and our 2 year old. Everyone LOVED it!! The Alpacas are the sweetest! And they have the FRIENDLIEST staff here. There was a sweet girl who helped us out and gave us the run down on the Alpacas. Totally worth the drive from south Washington. With COVID restrictions, tours are not taking place but you're still able to buy small bags of food and feed the alpacas. Thank you Marquam Hill Ranch! We will be back.

What a sweet trip to Molalla, only a 45 minute drive from Portland where we got to see these incredibly cute alpacas! Jennifer was the most welcoming host, at first I was hesitant because it was raining on the day we visited however Jennifer reassured me that the entire barn is covered and it wouldn't affect our time there. Not to mention Jennifer was interactive with the entire group and made sure everyone's questions were answered, spent good time walking the alpacas, etc. It was an absolute delight to visit such a cute farm with friendly people and a great experience. Would highly recommend to people of all ages, friends, and family. Thank you so much for the great time!

The best last minute plans we had the pleasure of partaking in. Had no plans for our last full day in Oregan so I decided to do some research. Had no idea what was going through my head at the time but I stumbled across an Alpaca farm in Molalla- just 50 minutes south of Portland. My boyfriend did some more research and it turns out that they had a Groupon for a 2 person tour for the price of one. Originally it's priced for 16/person but we got a $15 deal for 2 persons. Usually there is a minimum of 2 week advanced booking for their tours but we lucked out when they had a last minute cancelation. You have the option of going just to feed and interact with the alpacas but I highly recommend the tour. I left with a deeper appreciation of both the owners of the farm and the majestic animals. It was great Left with lots of cute pictures and memories. Our tour guide and owner, Jennifer, was amazing and really gave us a sense of her daily routine taking care of her alpaca babies. Five stars all the way. I guarantee that you will leave having seen an alpaca spit, poop, pee, and whine at you. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Super fun tour, got to pet, feed, and walk the alpacas around. We fed them and it was a pretty clean facility. I would give them 4 stars just due to the cost and nature of the items in the gift shop. The tour online claims to be 75 minutes, however after about 50 they just put you in the gift shop to buy stuff. Most of the stuff in there is from Peru as well, not the alpacas on the farm. Even after getting spit on I would recommend the tour :)

BEST TIME OF MY LIFE!! Did NOT realize when I'm going on a Portland trip I'd be seeing and petting Alpacas!! The owners of the farm were extremely nice to us even though we just showed up without any info or prior reservations. They are the nicest people we'd met so far in Portland. They showed us around the farm, introduced us to the Alpacas and educated us about them. They're extremely nice and knowledgeable and made our trip so much better! And of course... The Alpacas!! They are so adorable and friendly. You can even feed them! Can't recommend this place more! Definitely will come back to visit them and the amazing Alpacas (our favorite is Paige )

The staff was polite, welcoming, and friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. The experience was like going into a nice home, next to a vineyard, for wine and cheese. Lovely atmosphere. Our group of eight had a Saturday afternoon reservation. We arrived and were seated before 12:30pm and left by around 1:45pm. This did not appear to be a big operation. During our visit, I saw only two lady employees tending to all the customers. Rain Dance has indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated inside. Regardless of where you sit, there are good views of the property's vineyard and garden. It's beautiful and serene. Shortly after our tasting began, a bachelorette party left. Therefore, we had the inside all to ourselves save for a couple seated by the window. The weather was pleasant so several doors to the house were left open, creating a calm, gentle breeze. We had the wines listed below. Individual bottle prices are from the time of our tasting and descriptions are from Rain Dance's website at the time of writing this review ( https://raindancevineyards.com/shop/ ). * 2022 Grand Oak Vineyard Riesling. $32 for 750-mL bottle. "Classic aromas and flavors of stone fruit and tropical flowers are lifted by vibrant acidity on the palate. This drier-style Riesling allows for so much versatility at the dinner table, but fish dishes are our favorites." * 2023 Grand Oak Gewurztraminer. $32 for 750-mL bottle. "A Rain Dance favorite! Gewurztraminer is a rare find in Oregon, especially in such a dry style. Its lively notes of jasmine, peach and spice box are perfect for Asian and Indian dishes loaded with their own exotic spices." * 2022 Estate Pinot Noir Cuvee. $45 for 750-mL bottle. "Fresh notes of cherries, pomegranate, plums, black pepper, pipe tobacco, and cinnamon." * 2021 Grand Oak Vineyard Pinot Noir. $60 for 750-mL bottle. "Bright and fresh with a complex assortment of dark cherries, raspberries, cranberries, intermingled with thyme, sage, and cinnamon." Since the time of our visit, I think the 2022 Grand Oak Vineyard Riesling and the 2021 Grand Oak Vineyard Pinot Noir have been replaced by 2023 and 2022 vintages, respectively. We also had at least two charcuterie boards ($35 each) that included crackers, roasted hazelnuts, onion jam, pork rillettes, raisins, and three kinds of cheese. The total cost for our group for everything was $336, which worked out to $42 per person. While I've been to a lot of wineries/vineyards and done a lot of wine tastings (just search my reviews), I'm still by no means a wine connoisseur. All I can say about Rain Dance is I thought all of the wines were enjoyable. All four, from the riesling to the pinot noirs, were delectable. They smelled and tasted well made and high quality. In short, I enjoyed our visit to Rain Dance and thought it was worth the visit. Rain Dance Vineyards is named after owners and founders Celia and Ken Austin's Rain Dance Ranch. The ranch was established in 1991 and the vineyard was established in 2009.

So I have farmgirl aspirations. I love barns. Chickens excite me. Compost? So amazing. Alpacas?…read moreNifty beasts. When I was single living in Eugene I had an enormous vegetable garden and lived out there spring till fall.It was my obsession, my haven. I blame my years living in the desert for this fascination with green, growing, blooming stuff. I lived for trips to nurseries, crop rotation, my fresh herbs, collecting salad fixings five minutes before a great meal. Social worker grind by day, earth mother the rest of the time. Bliss. I always had dirt under my nails, tomatoes to share, and I slept really really well. Things changed though when I moved to Portland and got a man, then a kid, then had aging parents to take care of in addition to my day job. I could barely get to the store much less a farm stand or the farmer's market. Enter the CSA. What a great idea. Support local farms, share the risk, reap some of the harvest. My first attempt didn't go so well ( long story about a crazy lady, slugs, and the Sheriff) and expensive. 10 weeks for $780. Ouchie. My kid got to meet the llamas and chickens though. That was sweet. This time we tried Sun Gold Farms. It is way more reasonable, 18 weeks for a full share, less than $500 and the produce is outstanding. I pick ours up every Wednesday evening in my neighborhood. I love the recipes and stories on their website, the people are great, they have honey shares too if you are interested, We have had some awesome dinners and my kid has tried new veggies. (Ex: fresh chickpeas on a chunk of the bush! ) They have an open house ( we unfortunately were out of town) every summer for their csa members which is cool, too. I think this farm really does everything well. Its not certified organic but its spray free and focuses on sustainable green practices. I can't think of anything more to tell you. I'm including a photo of this week's share. ( there are three of us at home plus my brother in law eats here a lot, so we have a fulll share) Oh, it runs summer into fall. You missed it this year. I'm going to go eat some homemade apple pear crisp now ( fruit from my csa basket). I'm a lucky farm girl. Ish.

My contact with Sun Gold Farms is through the Saturday Farmers Market at PSU. Sun Gold Farms has…read moredelicious produce at fair prices and offers Portlanders the market's best sweet corn as well as an amazing variety of winter squash. If you're like me and think butternut and acorn are the only squashes around, talk to Charlie and try the more tasty varieties -- carnival, red kabocha, sweet dumpling, blue hubbard, harlequin, delicata (one of my favorites), Thelma Sanders, red curry. The list goes on and on and on. Charlie's always happy to explain the differences between these types and he and his wife offer tips on how best to prepare the various kinds, either roasting them or turning them into soups. We like all of the produce they sell. Sun Gold is one of the best farm stands at the PSU Saturday market and an absolute must for sweet corn and squash.
