As a meat enthusiast, I was disappointed when I was dragged out to this restaurant by my vegetarian friend. That disappointment quickly left when I tasted their food. It tasted amazing. The saffron and honey ice cream was the best thing I've had in France so far. I will make a second trip backup the restaurant before I leave Nice just for that ice cream. It's seriously that good. The owner is a very kind man. One of the people I was with kept coughing so he brought her a pinch of saffron to help. I wanted to love this place. I really did! Chose to come here after reading reviews, but was disappointed by the high prices and small portions. I ordered chicken and rice + veggies, and received lamb and rice + veggies. Was still tasty despite the mix-up, but the portion seemed small for 14 euro. Wife got the veggie soup, but didn't really enjoy it enough to eat it (to be fair, this was right before a nasty stomach bug took her down). I had a taste and thought the soup was good, if not a little oily. Left it there uneaten but were still charged full price. The owner was really nice (once we decided to order wine in addition to our two entrees), but sadly I can't recommend unless you're desperate for vegan food and have euro to burn. read more

My boyfriend and I had trouble finding vegan food anywhere in France! So this place offering vegan food was amazing. The food was fantastic. Full of flavour. There was only the one guy working and he was funny, friendly and focused on good service, which again is sometimes hard to find. Even though his English wasn't perfect he really tried and the menu was in English and clearly labelled vegan for the meals. We've been in France for 10 days and this has been the best meal of our entire honeymoon!! Food was delicious and authentic and service with speed! We will never forget this incredible meal! I'm vegetarian and my husband is a meat eater and they had a lot of options for both of us. Finding vegetarian food in Nice is difficult but finding good vegetarian food is even harder. This small place is run by a very friendly owner with a mildly off-putting and slightly uncomfortable sense of humor. He speaks English well, but in spite of that, he did change one of our orders (which may have been on purpose). However, the quality of the food easily made up for this small error! Everything tasted like it was home-made and was super flavorful; especially the dessert (saffron honey ice cream). The house wine was definitely not the star of the show, but the bill was; Alounak is very affordable for Nice. Go here as a group (more than 3 people) to change the owner from borderline creepy to very entertaining and you'll have a great time! read more

Found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. I liked that this wasn't on the main tourist streets and offered a more 'locals' feel. I think the owner, Martin, served us and also gave us brief French lessons - was perfect for first timers! We had the ratatouille (veg + lamb) and it was absolutely delicious. Also had the dolmas and eggplant as appetizers - they were some of the best I've had. If you're looking for something off the beaten path (but still in the mix of everything and safe), I highly recommend trying this place. read more

Also stopped by here on a backpacking trip through Nice. In my Europe travels thus far, I found no vegetarian/vegan supportive restaurants prior to this. It's got a Middle Eastern cuisine with primarily vegetarian (but some meat) options. You can get a French or English-translated menu. The owner is extremely amiable and helpful! The couscous is quite heavy, but the dolman was fantastic. Also, you MUST try the saffron-honey ice cream, perhaps the best thing I've eaten throughout my entire trip. read more

My girlfriend is vegan, and we were in town one a Sunday. Many other vegan places were closed but luckily for us Alounak was open. The space is very relaxing, and the food was very good. Having vegan options was really great, as sometimes it's difficult to find them when travelling. The owner is very nice, he even gave my girlfriend some menthol cough drops as she has a bit of a cold. Giving this restaurant 4 stars for the food and an extra star for the wonderful service! For college students, or anyone for that matter, who is traveling on a budget this place is a great find. Entree prices range from €9 - €15 along with there being options of selected pre-set multi course menus ranging from €13 - €25 depending on how many courses you want- really great value for money. Our group ordered veggie couscous, ratatouille, veggie tagine, and caviar d'aubergine - we were all gushing about how wonderful each dish was as soon as we took our first bites! This is also a great place for vegetarians/vegans as there are good number of really great options on the menu - we had a vegan with us who was very grateful to find a place with more than one option on the menu. The man who served us was simply delightful, he spoke English really well and overall just made the whole experience wonderful. We enjoyed our time in this restaurant in Nice, just a couple of blocks from our hotel. The owner, Martin, was very helpful, amiable and cooked as well as served all the food. He spent extra time explaining the dishes and the seasonings when we asked what the complex flavors were. He even brought some of the special seasoning over in a jar to further explain how he seasoned the meat despite being a vegetarian and never having tasted it. My husband had the lamb tanjine and really liked it with a special lemony flavor to the sauce. I had the dolman and ratatouille with potatoes in a tomato a sauce and both were excellent. Saffron ice cream and mint tea were the perfect complement to end meal. We appreciated the optional English menu and our host could not have been nicer. read more
