2 of 12 in 2016 - DONE!!!…read more Who runs 2 1/2 marathons in 6 days... I DO!!! I earned my "Concrete" Mermaid Athlete status. My friends always call me a mermaid because I love the waters. I thought the Mermaid Series 1/2 Marathon and the pink mermaid medal was fitting for my wall of medals. I had originally signed up for the 10k 6 miles because 6 days prior to this race I just ran the Run Surf City 1/2 Marathon and in 3 weeks will be running the San Diego 1/2 Marathon. Never ran a race back to back but said there's a first for everything so less than 12hrs before start I had asked to switch to a 1/2 marathon (since my body fully recovered quickly) - why not!!! THE EXPO. There really wasn't one. Just a bib pick up at Sports Authority. THE COURSE. The race is on a Saturday morning. After a long week and having to wake up early in the M was a brutal awakening. No PRs just #sexypace. Started out cold and foggy. But appreciate the cold because by mile 5 the sun will be beaming. It was around mission beach park. Parking was hideous. Think about it, the start line and finish line are a mile away from each other and you can either park at the finish line and walk an extra mile back to your car OR you can park near the finish line and walk a mile before running 13.1 miles. There's no shuttle service!!! Choose wisely. The path ways were basically the park paths and side walks. Expect some crowding, especially when you catch up to pacer groups and they block the pathway and you can't get around them. The course is relatively flat with itty bitty unnoticeable inclines around mile 2-4. Mile 5-7 goes by quickly. Mile 8 was a clustered path and you are using mile 10s water station as mile 8s water station - not a good idea because you have to cross the course and get into the ways of mile 10 runners to get a cup of water. Mile 8-9 probably the hardest miles of this course. And the worst part, the hammer head gel espresso flavor on the tables were the nastiest gels I ever had. I had the squirts the rest of the day.... terrible!!! The rest of the way to the finish line you are running on a side walk and by then many locals are entering the park so your sharing a side walk with a lot of others runners and park visitors. And at the end they are having the kid dash on the same path as the finish so as you are running the last 100 yards there's kids and people dashing towards you (that was kind of weird and very disorganized). But overall I'm happy I ran the 1/2. San Diego people are so friendly... A lot of people smiled at me on the course, had conversation with me, etc. cracking up when homegirl and I ran past a volunteer that looked grumpy and didn't want to be there and she said "smile girl" and the volunteer still just stared at us. Hilarious! Anyhow this was a fun run with great people. THE AFTERMATH. Several tents set up for small snacks and drinks and a lot of merchandise on sale. They were serving green bananas. You know how important potassium is after running 13.1 miles and they serve GREEN BANANAS, yuck. But I received my medal and my mermaid necklace... I finished my 1/2 marathon and beat my time from 6 days ago by 5 minutes with no injury. Next race in 3 weeks :)

I'm thankful for the volunteers, but move it along people! There was so much bottleneck that it just created havoc. Race morning, it rained. I was unsure if I wanted to run a 10k in the rain, but did it anyways. Parking was a little crazy, but plentiful if you don't mind the walk. There were no corrals, so basically you line up according to what you think your pace is. Luckily, I was near the front, but still got stuck behind some walkers and slower runners. After a couple of miles, it was wide open. The route included Fiesta Island, and because it was raining, wasn't very pretty. There was a slight incline and when you run around the bend, you get the rain and wind against you. Definitely reflected in your time. The poor volunteers were out at the mile markers calling out times. There were a couple of water stations, which I bypassed. What bothered me a bit was the fact that some onlookers/patrons were a little miffed that the racers were on the sidewalk heading back to the finish. Whatever... At the finish, there were booths for pizza, drinks, samples, etc... Beer garden was packed, but popular. The booths were too claustrophobic. All the lines were running into one another. You receive a tiny medal. A surprise to me since it wasn't advertised. It was my first 10K and I did it for the kids. The only downside is finding time on a Friday to drive out to the Expo to pick up your bib. Luckily, one of our friends nearby were able to pick it up. If you aren't able to make the trek, I would suggest getting your bib mailed to you instead of having to wake up at an ungodly hour to get your bib on race day.

There are few causes out there more worthy than WWP, and to run with these magnificent athletes truly is something special. This run/walk is officially timed but there are no chips - it's old school. The route is a flat and easy one that goes right along the water in Mission Bay. On today's run, which was the 5th annual, the weather was a bit windy and chilly along the water, but that's beyond anyone's control. The race benefits in that there are three other races in San Diego this Saturday, including the insanely popular Neon Run. So, the field today had about 300 runners/walkers and the overall winner ran at about 18:00. Parking is easy and available, and the entry fees are low with specials for military and students. The "Dri-Fit" shirts are pretty sweet, and the food and water, all donated, were abundant and easily accessible. The one area this event could improve is advertising. I looked over this run several times on a listing because I just didn't feel like bothering to look up what SDMPI is. Had the listing been marketed as Wounded Warrior, I would have signed up a long time ago. I wonder how many people did the same thing and just went for the catch Neon Run instead? Rated three stars because this event is indeed "A-OK" and will only grow and become more popular especially among the military.

5 for FUN, but there were some kinks along the way…read more Packet pickup was avail at 2 locations on 2 different days. I opted to go during my lunch to RoadRunner. A tad disorganized - the person behind the table didn't know what to do when I presented with my number, no safety pins were offered and the people giving out the shirts used a verbal system in giving the shirts away vs. reviewing bibs. Nonetheless, since I went early, I was done within 10 mins. Pros: -Course was relatively flat (YAY.) -We actually got real medals. -Loved how everyone dressed up in 80s attire!!! -The band for the after-party was BAD ASS!!! Cons: -Traffic was horrible!!! If you're coming down on the 5, get off at Mission Bay Drive vs. Sea World Drive and park. Trust me, you'll be grateful... -When you leave, there is only 1 way out (if you parked north of Sea World Drive). -I was late to the start, so I got stuck with all the walkers and strollers. It was hard to bypass some groups since they took up the entire walkway. HELLOOOO!!! -Weather was very crisp and cool. When you round the bend on Fiesta, you get a lot of headwind, which also contributed to an even worse sore throat. -Line to take pics with the Dolorian was waaaay too long. The photographer took several shots per group, which resulted in a very long wait time. -There were mini cups of water and orange slices for post-race. That's it?! It was unfortunate that (1) I hadn't trained due to my surgery and (2) I woke up sick. This course is definitely PR-able, but it was mostly all about having fun. This is a great 5k for beginners or for those wanting a PR.

I guess they changed the location this time because parking and traffic was easy. There was plenty of signage to find where the run started. People seriously dressed up for this event yet most of them were running the 5k vs the 10k. The best costumes were the two guys dressed up full on arcade games. I really wanted to see them run in those. While running, we saw He-Man. That was unexpected and well, the guy actually had the build of him and his costume was legit! Overall the course was flat with the occasional curve or small elevation change since we ran Mission Bay. Pack up pickup was easy and the t-shirt was a tech material vs the cotton one. I wore the t-shirt on the run and it kept me pretty cool. My only complaint is that there was no timing chip on the bib for the race but they had a timing clock so you can see when you finished. Not that relying on my Nike Run to calculate my time but if you are going to give me a bib, at least have a timing chip or someone taking photos for the event. What's the use of a bib if it doesn't do anything. Really anyone with the basic Road Id bib could of just joined the race. The medals were pretty cool. It was a boombox with the awesome 80's logo on the side. No year or date though but whatever. the volunteers at the end though could be a bit nicer giving out the medals. When me and my friend finished the volunteers holding the medals just looked at me like "what?" Um...did you just see me cross the finish line? I'd like my medal please. It wasn't like I wanted them to put it on me but damn, smile, say congrats and hand one to me. The girl just stared at me with all the medals hanging from her arm and pointed to her friend. Ugh, teenagers. Now was the price for the 10k different fro the 5k? Because if it was, the only thing your paying for is to run a longer distance. Damn.

Registration was easy as to where you sign up online and pick which race you will be completing In as for the 5K, 10k, or half marathon. I decided to go with the Half marathon to challenge myself and expierence the long run of 13.1 miles. The BIB pick up was at Road runner sports the day before in Kearny Mesa where it was quite organized and easy as where they also handed you your shirt. The race began on a Saturday at 715AM in Mission Bay with a nice upbeat crowd! The views were spectacular and breathtaking running along the bay seeing the water and that San Diego Sun shining down on you. The race started out great for the first 6 miles which was well put together while it was secluded for the runners participating in it but suddenly fell to anyone and everyone on the ground walking and riding bikes and also to people walking dogs. The race then felt as if it was a public race where anyone can join in the park and wasn't blocked just for the participants. It was a great event to attend and the volunteers did a great job handing out water and Gatorade. The shirt and the medals were absolutely beautiful and there were prizes for the top 3 in each age group which was a plus. Other that that I had a nice time at the Resolution run and looking forward to attend next year!

Registration was easy, parking was so-so and the communication up to the race was on point. Thank for the email informing us that Sea World Drive would be closed! I ran the 5k while my friends walked it and two others did the 15k. It was smart to have the 15k start 30 mins before the 5k group. The path they had us on was one of the best runs I've been on. It was a continuous loop around the island which was great for runner to keep going and not having to avoid other runners if there was a turn about. No one was fighting for space or running to avoid trees, objects or incoming runners from the opposite direction. I liked how the 5k finish line and the 15k finish line were in two different locations. This really opened up the space and people didn't crowd around the finish lines. It was also a pretty good distance away from the vendors. The "medal" was unique in where you got to write down your resolution with chalk/pain chalk. (too bad it rubbed off after moving around so much) but it also doubled as a magnet! Def a great run to benchmark the rest of my runs this year.
