Not a big fan of this race... I mean the views are gorgeous! You run through the neighbor of La Jolla and Torrey Pines... great ocean view... but... -The Hills?! I'm sure everyone who lives in SD knows that Torrey Pines hill... people hike up that hill. Here they make you run up that hill at mile 6. And the incline is like 400ft in 1/2 mile. So steep. Most people just walk it. -No GUs or gels or anything other than water/sports drink. Carlsbad gives you energy gels, other races give you orange slices, or beans or anything along the race. LJ gives you nothing but water and this nasty sport drink. -Shuttling service. I mean lots buses but you have to go there early and catch the bus by 5:30am to Del Mar race tracks. Sucks waiting for 2 hours in the cold. Or shuttle back to the Del Mar, when all you wanna do is go home. Perks... some goodies at the end, Ballast point beers upon finish... and the bragging rights of finishing La Jolla!!

bucketlist item checked! top 12 "Must-Do Half Marathons in the U.S. 100% of net proceeds benefit children's charities! so the LJ Half and 5k is put on by the La jolla kiwanis club and logistically organized by inmotionevents. the half marathon portion starts at the delmar fairgrounds and makes it way out towards the scenic coastal route, heading south through the iconic torrey pines beach up an over the torrey pines hills, before heading towards la jolla cove. the gorgeous ocean views make the courses hills hardly noticeable, but be warned the hills will be challenging. I was too busy taking in the views to notice them lol. more information... so this race is part of the triple crown series... the race entry comes with a tech T-shirt, results and tracking, pre-day expo and post race fest. I really like the vendors and booths! jerky, oatmeal coffee, coconut water, and tons of post race snacks. overall the event was well organized, shuttle services to take runners to the starting line from LJ ( which we did ). free parking for the expo and tons of goodies. looking forward to doing it again in 2020!!

It's a bit difficult to review this race because I have such mixed feelings about it. Sure, there's the crazy hill around mile 6 (yes, 400ft elevation gain) and in all my years of hiking through Torrey Pines State Beach, I rarely see anyone run up it, so you can only imagine how many ppl painfully walked up it this past weekend! It was a beast, and will really wear your legs down, but keep pushing through! The view of the beach is nice, but truthfully, if I was serious about running this race, I don't think I would enjoy it that much. The course itself felt a bit lackluster compared to AFC and Carlsbad Half, even though I was excited to run by my alma mater in La Jolla. Believe me, I enjoy hiking up that hill in Torrey Pines and jogging along the beach, or grabbing brunch in downtown La Jolla. Heck, I even jogged down Torrey Pines when I used to train (UCSD campus loop!). But something about running this race just felt a bit... underwhelming after experiencing the other two races in the triple crown series. I don't see this as a race I look forward to running in the next year, but have definitely ran some hilly races in San Francisco that I enjoyed. Aside from the actual race day, the tech shirt that comes with the race is pretty nice! The 2017 shirt was even better! The fitness expo was small (not much to stick around for), the course ends and begins at a different place (5am shuttle, anyone? These logistics aren't the best), and I found that the finish line festival felt smaller in comparison to the AFC Half or Carlsbad (half) marathon races.

I'M A SURVIVOR !!! What can I say ?! By far the toughest run I have ever done in my life. Torrey Pines hill was killer, but thanks to Lady Gaga, I managed to defeat that insane climb. I was able to run it non-stop and even though my pace slowed down a bit, I more than made up for it during the downhill runs (and there were quite a few of them). This time around, I wanted to finish strong and sprint the last half mile as fast as I could. Fortunately, I accomplished that with arms raised high with a HUGE @$$ smile as I crossed the finish line. Yeah baby! It was mind blowing! Such a rush and an unbelievable feeling. The amazing thing is I finished faster on this run than the Carlsbad in 2:11. Not bad for my second half marathon. The reason why I gave this event 5 stars was because it was an experience unlike any other. It mentally and physically tested and challenged me to the max. I believed that I was capable of finishing as long as I kept my eye on the goal: Finish strong under 2:30. Anything really is possible. With motivation, determination, and hard work you can really open up your mind to reaching your highest potential. It's truly a rewarding experience. As for the event itself, I admit there weren't enough water stations, porta-potties and traffic is an issue going in and out since the start and finish lines were in separate locations. Also, there weren't many spectators compared to Carlsbad. I didn't see any live bands on the course, but I did give a few high-fives to a few fans, which was cool. So do your research first folks. To be on the safe side I made sure to: 1. Get dropped off/picked up so I wouldn't have to deal with parking 2. Bring my fuel belt with enough liquids and energy supps. in case water stations are limited 3. Use the restroom prior - avoid drinking too much liquid before the run, especially if you have a small bladder like me 4. Know the course well - expect to save energy for the hills and pace yourself so you can finish strong 5. Find what will motivate you when you run. My ipod was my saving grace Thanks to all the sponsors, fans, and volunteers who helped make this event a memorable one. AFC here I come..1 step closer to my Triple Crown! =)

This is a great event. Just make sure you know what you are getting into. I would suggest to run Torrey Pines at least once so there won't be any surprises. Trust me when you run up that hill at mile five of six and you get to the top you feel accomplished. I am not sure but this year they did not pass out any goo which a lot of the runner would have probably appreciate before hitting the hill. I am looking forward to next year.

Thank you very much past-Yelpers for getting the word out about the nightmarish EXPO situation. I took it to heart and went right as the EXPO opened. I was able to avoid the long drive in and even got breakfast at The Cottage! :) Also, thank you to all the wonderful volunteers and spectators who came out to cheer us on (especially during the inclines, your shoutout was much appreciated). While La Jolla Shores was an absolute killer on the knees, I did enjoy the challenge that came with this half. I managed not to get bored, even without my iPod, and avoided hitting the wall around mile 11. I do hope, though, that the logistics of race day drive in to Del Mar is changed for next year. It took us fifty extra minutes to drive in!

(Half #11, 2015) The La Jolla Half Marathon made me its b*tch! Seriously, in my push toward achieving the Triple Crown Series--a challenge including the Carlsbad Half, the La Jolla Half, and America's Finest City Half--La Jolla's course required grit--more effort, in fact, than I had anticipated. You see, after the first five miles, the course climbs...and climbs...and climbs! (With each step after exhausting step, I could swear I heard La Jolla mocking me.) Beginning at the Del Mar Racetrack, an 18 ft. elevation, the course then winds leisurely south toward the coastline. It's a beautifully scenic run, really. Many runners paused for selfies! However, the elevation soon turns, and from mile 5.3 to about mile 8, you'll trudge upward to 440 ft. (I pushed just beyond mile 7 before I broke.) Cramping ensued... I made it though, pushed through. Two down and one to go! Sure, I cursed the run itself, verbally defiled each mile marker; but when finally finishing and crossing the line, I felt stronger, more confident. It's a great feeling, to set a goal--no matter how challenging--and to accomplish it. The La Jolla Half, it took discipline--over 5,300 runners would most assuredly agree. But maybe that's the point, to push runners beyond their comfort zone. This race'll do that. Be ready!

2nd half marathon complete! One more to complete the Triple Crown.. Expo was at the Hilton, across the street from the Del Mar racetrack. There's a short walk from the dirt lot parking lot (same parking for race day) if you want to park for free. Otherwise you can valet or pay to park in the hotel's parking lot. The expo seemed fairly small compared to the number of runners participating. I didn't see much worth staying for, so I was in and out fairly quick. Race Day - I was fortunate enough to be dropped off in Del Mar and picked up in La Jolla, so I didn't have to deal with shuttles. There is definitely traffic getting to Del Mar. It took about 30 mins or so just to get through the exit. Ample parking in the dirt lot by the race track. Waves were 1-6, and it seemed like there was little time in between each wave. I really enjoyed the course. The scenery was beautiful with a nice ocean breeze. Even though it started to get a bit warm in the early afternoon, there was enough shade and breeze to keep cool. The hills are rough, and there are a few hills, but expected (you know the course and likely someone has mentioned the treacherous hills or you've read reviews). Due to the drought and park regulations, there unfortunately were no water stations in Torrey Pines Reserve. It's about a 2 mile stretch and during the biggest incline, so be prepared if it's the same next year. Quite a few spectators and crowds cheering and supporting throughout the race, but seemed like a lot more at Carlsbad. La Jolla was challenging, but a great course to run. If I'm still running next year I would considered doing this again.

This hill is hard but you can do it!!

This is a beautiful course. If you are not an elite runner and you are scared, do it anyway. If you ate scared you can't keep the pace time, do it anyway. If the hills scare you, do it anyway. The race is very well organized. It is small, less than 12,000 participants. There are enough water stations, even if you are toward the back of the pack. You can't meet the time limits by walking the entire race but if you can run/walk 50/50 split you should be okay The views are beautiful and the post race party is nice. Small but nice. They do gear check. Get someone to drop you off at the fairgrounds and meet you for brunch in la Jolla

THE HILLS CAN SUCK IT! I mentally (yes mentally, not physically. Lol.) trained myself for the hills, and in return I was not phased at all. The hill journey starts off at mile 5 on Torrey Pines, but don't bother fighting it... there will be others. The hills will come back when you least expect it and with vengeance. (Like mile 10. And be cautious on the decline. You may pick up some great -2 minute momentum, but if you aren't careful, you can seriously eat it... face first.) Save your strength for the home stretch. To me, the last mile counts the most. You want to finish hard, strong and not look like a hill-weenie at the end. Other than the hills, the run was amazingly scenic. I was surprised that they did not offer any gels/GU, and some water stations ran out of cups. They were pouring water directly into runners mouths. I saw someone wrap his mouth completely around one of the water jugs... um, gross. The post-run party at the La Jolla Cove was pretty packed, but good. It was filled with a lot of support, and community spirit. I enjoyed the band, and especially the Nothing Bundt Cake! :) The drive out of the La Jolla Cove looked nuts! You can either park at the start of the race, or at the finish. Both ways provided FREE shuttle service. I opted to park at Del Mar (start) because I wanted to sleep in a little more since the race started at 07:30. If you chose to park at La Jolla, you would have to be there at 05:30am, deal with the minimal parking, pay for parking fees, be shuttled to the start, ect. After the race, the shuttle ride back to Del Mar took almost an hour. It was long, but I didn't care. I just sat there with all my goodies in hand. I think parking at Del Mar was worth it. I was able to get more sleep, not deal with La Jolla parking and La Jolla traffic and they have a parking lot vs finding your own spot. Overall, the event was good. Beware AFC, you are next and the 2014 Triple Crown will be mine! Mwhahaha.... ;)

Had to post the shirt for 2014... 33ND? = Fail

I thought the Mermaid Series 1/2 Marathon and the pink mermaid medal was fitting for my wall of medals. I had originally signed up for the 10k 6 miles because 6 days prior to this race I just ran the Run Surf City 1/2 Marathon and in 3 weeks will be running the San Diego 1/2 Marathon. Never ran a race back to back but said there's a first for everything so less than 12hrs before start I had asked to switch to a 1/2 marathon (since my body fully recovered quickly) - why not!!! THE EXPO. There really wasn't one. Just a bib pick up at Sports Authority. THE COURSE. The race is on a Saturday morning. After a long week and having to wake up early in the M was a brutal awakening. No PRs just #sexypace. Started out cold and foggy. But appreciate the cold because by mile 5 the sun will be beaming. It was around mission beach park. Parking was hideous. Think about it, the start line and finish line are a mile away from each other and you can either park at the finish line and walk an extra mile back to your car OR you can park near the finish line and walk a mile before running 13.1 miles. There's no shuttle service!!! Choose wisely. The path ways were basically the park paths and side walks. Expect some crowding, especially when you catch up to pacer groups and they block the pathway and you can't get around them. The course is relatively flat with itty bitty unnoticeable inclines around mile 2-4. Mile 5-7 goes by quickly. Mile 8 was a clustered path and you are using mile 10s water station as mile 8s water station - not a good idea because you have to cross the course and get into the ways of mile 10 runners to get a cup of water. Mile 8-9 probably the hardest miles of this course. And the worst part, the hammer head gel espresso flavor on the tables were the nastiest gels I ever had. I had the squirts the rest of the day.... terrible!!! The rest of the way to the finish line you are running on a side walk and by then many locals are entering the park so your sharing a side walk with a lot of others runners and park visitors. And at the end they are having the kid dash on the same path as the finish so as you are running the last 100 yards there's kids and people dashing towards you (that was kind of weird and very disorganized). But overall I'm happy I ran the 1/2. San Diego people are so friendly... A lot of people smiled at me on the course, had conversation with me, etc. cracking up when homegirl and I ran past a volunteer that looked grumpy and didn't want to be there and she said "smile girl" and the volunteer still just stared at us. Hilarious! Anyhow this was a fun run with great people. THE AFTERMATH. Several tents set up for small snacks and drinks and a lot of merchandise on sale. They were serving green bananas. You know how important potassium is after running 13.1 miles and they serve GREEN BANANAS, yuck. But I received my medal and my mermaid necklace... I finished my 1/2 marathon and beat my time from 6 days ago by 5 minutes with no injury. Next race in 3 weeks :)

My only "Hawaiian" type of outfit is a wrap I bought years ago from the Bahamas. If it weren't for this race, I probably would have worn it twice. Now I can say I wore it at least 4 times now. Lol. They should make the walkways one way thus giving runners more space, and kick out the pedestrians. lol. For 2016, I believe they changed the route a bit, and even added a 10K. I remember last year, there was this lady looking for her son. I guess he was taken the night before. She was on the side asking runners if anyone has seen a little boy; it was quite the downer. I signed up for the race online, which was fairly easy to complete, and they had an expo at the Hilton hotel 2 days before the race to pick up your BIB. At the expo, they had many vendors selling items as well as free energy drinks. They also handed out the free shirt you got for entering the race, which was really nice, and the quality was great! On race day, which was on a Sunday, the run for the Half Marathon started at 650 am. From all the emails I was receiving, we were told to show up at least 40 minutes or even 1 hour prior to the race due to all the runners being in the location, giving you enough time to find the wave your in. The Half Marathon or 13.1 miles course had a beautiful layout that started by the convention center, bringing you up through the Embarcadero to Harbor Island and through Point Loma. The course was a nice flat course until mile 9, where you are running up Washington Hill, gaining elevation into Hillcrest and throughout Balboa Park finishing in the Gaslamp. When we finished the race, we were giving our medals or bling and were handed a goodie bag with a Monster, crackers, and a protein bar. They were even handing out chocolate milk, water, and bananas. They had photographers on-site taking pictures and a small after party in the park aside from the finish line. This was absolutely my favorite race I have run, and I had a blast doing it. The course was perfect and well organized. They had volunteers handing out water and Gatorade approximately every 2 miles. They had porter pottys all throughout the course, and the crowd was very motivating. I'm looking forward to come-back and doing the exact race next year as well since I had an amazing experience. Besides the medal, what was picked up was the bib, shirt, and tote bag which included the Friar hat, snacks, and chocolate milk. The tech shirt was pretty unique. In my collection, it's the first to be patterned in camo style. I'm signed up for the challenge which consists of completing the Mammoth Half Marathon in June, thus receiving an extra medal. I will 100% be back again and I will be telling all my friends about this. A truly unique experience. You really feel the true race car experience and I think you need to wear workout clothes cause I felt the sweat from trying to concentrate and control the car. The cost is so worth the 1 or 2 hour time slot. I'm sold and will be looking into a membership cause I'm addicted.

Even though I didn't use the full session (it's more physically demanding than expected - seriously, LOL), the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Shoutout to Jason on staff - super professional and welcoming. He guided me through check-in, helped set everything up, and even offered a bottle of water before giving me some helpful tips on handling the cars. Small touches like that really elevated the visit. For those curious, here's the YouTube link to my run - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzysPtCC5gE. I clocked in around 8 minutes from the pit, which I think is pretty decent for a first-timer!

It was sponsored by St Jude hospital where they gave you another opportunity to donate to the kids there for free medical expenses provided at the hospital made easy by donors like yourself. The expo was on Broadway Pier located Downtown on the Embarcadero on Friday and Saturday while you had the chance to pick up your BIB and a lovely swag running jacket . I was in and out in no time with all my gear and of course free samples of chocolate and marshmallows! Sunday was race day and the 5k (3.2 mi) started at 645 am while the 15k (9.3 mi) started at 745am at K street in Downtown San Diego right next to Petco Park. The race was well organized with live music and photographers taking pictures. As for the course it was one of the funnest courses I have ran with hills on top of hills. As I runner you always have to remember what must go up must come down! The course was well managed with volunteers giving out electrolytes, water, and of course sweet treats such as chocolates and gummies every couple of miles. The photographers were great while all the pictures they took were were uploaded that same day unlike most races where you have to wait a week or so to view them. Overall it was a fun hilly Downtown race with scenic views and unexpectedly I finished 1st in my age group and 27th overall! Looking forward to run this race again in the future because I had such a great time and the swag they gave out was awesome along with the post race hot chocolate, Graham crackers, oreos, bananas, and of course marshmallows!

I returned in 2018 because it was now part of the Lexus LaceUp Running Series. Currently, the distances that they offer are 5k, 10k, and half marathon. I ran the half marathon. The race now starts and ends at the Pelican Cove Park just West of the Terranea Resort. *Parking* For parking, they have 3 locations: Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall, Salvation Army College, and Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Each of the locations are close enough to walk, but they'll have shuttles going around to pick-up and drop-off people. *Course* It was beautiful and just as hilly as I remembered it to be! Most of course was kept in the residential area about a stone's throw from the ocean just off of the main Palos Verdes Dr. Be sure to do your hill training or else be prepared to suffer! They even have a short steep section just after mile 10 that was a timed hill challenge. The fastest male and female will each win $500. Overall it was a well organized race. Although the race had a few quirks such as confusing separate starting lines, I liked the improvements that they've made with this race. The packet pick-up was quick and they had plenty of portapotties. Gear check was a bit chaotic as they were swamped with runners dropping off bags all at the same time. One of the bright spots with these Lexus LaceUp races was the post race food from the food trucks! That was some good quality food all included in your race registration!

I ran the 2010 event, it was my third half marathon ever. I will do it again next year. It's gorgeous, my bum and legs are still feeling the hills. They had yummy coffee and fruit at the start and finsh, and it had a very intimate feel. The parking was a bitch. The restroom line was long. That didn't matter though because i loved the run! Must add this to your run list. See you there in 2011!
