This is my 2nd year representing the Yelp Team. I was tasked to form both the Sat and Sun teams and I thank those who were able to commit the time to do so! Special shout out to Trish who organized and facilitated the registration process. Very smooth and detail oriented. YAY Trish!!! Props to the teams: Sat-Ian (Team Captain), Gary, Doris and Arlene Sun-MC, Amber, Andy and Dan This year's obstacles were crazier and even dirtier than last year. I remember last year I barely got wet and/or dirty and I dried off fairly quick. This year was BANANAS!!! Mud, puddles, foam, water, inner tubes, slides, color, and then some. I was happy I got thru the monkey bars without falling into the water/mud pit. I was not happy that the next obstacle (foam inner tube) I was shot with foam in my face going down the water slide and I almost drowned by getting ran over by another inner tube into the water pit. WOW! Thereafter, you have the revolving balls. You have to get across by walking on the tubes without falling into the muddy water. FAIL!!! Almost drowned in 4 ft of water. Then the injury with going up the ladders. I sustained a deep cut on my knee and started to bleed. I ran pass a First Aid booth asking for a band aid and got shut down with a "we're not first aid". Then whyTF were you in the first aid booth?! My fave was the big gigantic slide at the end of the course! You dive head first down the slide. YIPEEEEE!!!!!!! I have to admit, some of the challenges were pretty intense and nuts, but it sure was a LOT OF FUN!!! By the end, we were soaking wet, muddy, foamed and colored. CRAZINESS!!! Our team started together and finished together thru all the moans, groans and pains - hand in hand crossing that finish line!!! Team Yelp represented well!!! Switching up to WIPEOUT form is so much fun when you wear a costume! I've worn tutu's during a race but never gone full costume mode til the ROC, and why not when you're supposed to be RIDICULOUS! I dressed up as Alan from the Hangover as best I could and surprisingly the facial hair and wig stayed on through the race thanks to some well placed super glue that burned like a MFer! The ROC obstacles were a blast! Adult sized slip and slides, wrecking balls, tarzan swings, and huge slides??? Who can ask for anything more? It's just a shame you can only go through once...officially. But the vibe from your fellow ROCstars is awesome...none of the I'm bigger, faster, stronger than you attitude. It's the ultimate fun atmosphere from start to the awesome afterparty. Speaking of which, Lucid Dossier totally rocked and took the party to the next level! Big balls, skimpy outfits and wipeouts. Yep, this is ROC (Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge) Race. And ridiculous, it is. Taking a page out of MXC and then the Americanized version Wipeout, the Vavi crew allows you to test your mettle against some fun obstacles amid hilarious costumes amidst a drunken populace. As a mud run veteran (Tough Mudder x 3, and all the others, including Vavi's own Down & Dirty run), it was quite lovely not to have to dig mud out of my ears for once. Plus one of my friends got cracked in the back of the head with a foam spinning thing, and we got it all on video. That's priceless. Suck it Mastercard. read more

Oh baby this IS as good as it gets! I had so much fun doing the obstacles, despite having gone to bed at 4AM that day. Quite a few people from my team flaked out and my two other companions were taking their sweet time so I pretty much ran the course myself. I didn't stop running until I hit the bottleneck at the largest inflatable waterside I've ever seen, which was definitely worth the 15 minute wait. Other than that, running the course was smooth. On the flip side, I did hear that those who ran the course on Saturday had a ton of issues with time and having to wait to do the obstacles. My team and I, on the other hand, ran Sundays course, which I think prevented such issues from occurring since fewer people showed up. I got a free beer at the end, and coincidentally ran into a super cool chick by the name of Trish who just so happens to be an elite Yelper. That was icing on the cake. read more

Some obstacles were fun, some were okay. The ROC (Ridiculous Obstacle Course) in ROC Race is misleading. There were only maybe about 4/13 obstacles that I would consider "ridiculous." Try wearing something you don't mind getting muddy and wet. One of the obstacles had us going down a hill on an inner tube while they soak us, then eventually landing in a large body of water. My favorite obstacle was the one where you had to run through a barrel beam with huge balls swinging at you. If you fall, like I did and many others you'll land in 4 feet of water. The 5k wasn't too bad because when you got to each obstacles you actually had to wait in line for everyone else in front of you to go. Lame. Vendors and a free beer after the race was a nice. But for $65, I didn't think it was worth it. Luckily I went with great people so that made up for it. Don't forget to to put on sunblock! read more

This race ROCed! Warning: if you're running in the afternoon wave wear sunscreen, the burn is no joke! The obstacles were all easier than I thought, except for the bouncy balls (the station where you have to bounce on gigantic red balls to get across). No one on my team made it across. Race is packed, unlike other reviews there were no more than 3 people in front of us at each course. I felt this event was well organized, RSVP early. read more

Our first 5k fun run! We had a blast and we definitely felt like we got a good workout in! (We ran the whole thing) -Parking at Del Mar was $10 -The race is FAMILY FRIENDLY (13 and up) so don't expect anything too crazy... however there were multiple obstacle stations with varied degrees of difficulty (three different heights at the Wall Climb, different spin speeds at the Sweeper, more wrecking ball crossfire in the middle lane at the Wrecking Ball obstacle...) -Obstacles were further apart at the beginning of the race (at least it felt that way) -Brief or no wait times at the obstacles (I noticed that was a complaint from previous years so I don't know if they made improvements or if we just went at a good time! -Fun and upbeat volunteers at the obstacle stations -Cool post-race activities... free Dr. Bronners dance party/soap shower and free foam station otherwise most other stands cost $$ or were promotional I don't know how much the obstacles vary from year to year but if they were different enough I'd probably do it again with a group of friends. read more

Ran this yesterday & had a BLAST ! Great fun run to do with your friends of all varying degrees of athleticism. Anyone 13+ is allowed to participate so it could be a great family event too ! Obstacles weren't too challenging but definitely entertaining, I loved the bounce-to-freedom, monkeybars, flying balls of doom, giant water slide (can I buy one...?). Basically, if you like to do stupid-human-tricks you will have a good time. The only problem is the WAITING. My team decided to run the entire thing at full speed but it still took us 1 HOUR due to the time standing in line waiting for the obstacles. We led the pack during our wave but caught up to the previous ones so... for the 2 obstacles at the end we had to wait abt 30 minutes. Also, we had to wait about 30 minutes before our race in the corrals before being let into the starting line aka everyone pushing & shoving to get to the front of the race-track. (I know firsthand what it feels like to be a thoroughbred at Del mar. Sup Seabiscuit?). If you want to avoid waiting in line & actually going for speed/agility/challenging yourself, do the earliest race time & go first so you're in the first wave. The fastest guy did the entire thing in like 20-something minutes, which made me question my so called 'athleticism'. Also wear minimal clothing since if you're running through this, you'll be wet most of the time & you'll be weighed down. Also free beer at the end is nice but miller64? Really ?! I wish they had booths with some better micro-breweries around so I could upgrade to a nicer brew afterwards but luckily they had Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy (BOMB.COM). And I HIGHLY recommend the foam bath afterwards. I felt minty clean, thanks Dr. Bronner ! read more

Holy moly was the ROC Race fun!!! ROC Race was my second obstacle course race. To be honest with you, I was a bit scared at first because I was left scarred, bruised, and ankle sprained when I ran the Gladiator two months ago. Those battle scars are impressive, but I'll take an injury-free run anytime. Parking took awhile, everyone were piled up and backed up in a single lane entering the parking lot. I thought the obstacles were either super easy or impossibly hard. I really wanted to challenge myself at the gorilla bars, but failed miserably as soon as I realized the bars were so thick that I had could grip my fingers around them. Another obstacle I failed was running across the water tube with the wrecking balls. It was hard enough without the balls swinging in your face. I didn't see anyone making it across, so *high-five* if you did! I loved the tight rope, the "world's biggest inflatable slide," the tire mile, and the tarzan swing. Those were a lot of fun. I'm indifferent for the other ones. One thing I thought was a little inconvenient was that the bag-check was far away from the starting line. My anxious self couldn't wait to start the race, but had to walk all the way to the back to drop off my bag first. However, it was fun to look at different costumes and check out booths along the way. I wish I were half as creative as some of those people out there! I really enjoyed all the vendors who supported this event. I especially liked the yelp booth of course. Too bad I didn't win anything from the game though because I'd love to have the sweatbands to represent when I'm at the gym. This fine wine got better with age. Last year's ROC Race was a blast. My group had lots of fun running through the easy obstacles and laughing along the way at how some of them were pretty ridiculous. This year, though, the obstacles were ridiculous in a different way. They were so much more creative! It was easy to tell that a lot more time and thought was put into it this year. But that's to be expected since last year's was the first. They grew a lot in that year. They went from clever things to do with dirt, plastic sheets, and poles to clever things to do with all kinds of stuff. Who doesn't wanna try to run over a mud pit across a series of metal cans on a chain while a crane is swinging giant inflatable wrecking balls at you? And even more awesome was the mammoth. The pictures of this thing did it no justice. I don't know how high up it was, but I'm pretty sure I could see my house from there. And even better, it was wet enough that I slid all the way to the end both times I did it, and it was a long distance. Great job, Vavi. Seriously. That was the best event yet! Keep it UP! read more

Just finished the 2013 ROC Race in Del Mar. My team had a lot of fun but I left feeling that it wasn't worth the price. The obstacles were not really that challenging, maybe only 3-4 of them were actually fun / challenging. I know VAVI is trying to make money off this deal but the lines were ridiculous. They need to either have several obstacles at each stop or sell less tickets. It shouldn't take 1.5 hours to run a 5k. We spent at least 30 minutes waiting in line at the last two obstacles. We also spent 20-30 minutes waiting at the start line (i.e. we started 30 minutes after our designated time). It just kills the fun after awhile when you're sitting around in a huge line waiting for an obstacle that takes 20 seconds to run at most. We had fun and I'm glad I did the race, but no way would I pay $50+ for this event again. read more

Such a great way to spend your weekend! Who doesnt want to get ridiculous with your friends? Silly costumes, obstacles, and a free beer? The VAVi crew did a great job of running this. Without them and the volunteers this wouldnt have ran so smoothly. The obstacles were great, they spaced things out well. They were challenging and fun, but not too hard. The after party was great. This was a pretty good little race. They staggered the heats really well so that you weren't walking the first 5 minutes (which happens all too often in obstacle course races). None of the obstacles were backed up, which was awesome - but I was also in one of the very early heats so I'm not sure if it stayed that way. I really liked some of the obstacles - like the monkey bars and the hill that you needed a rope to climb to the top of. Not a huge fan of the slip and slide action - too many rocks. Overall it was a really fun race and I'll be back again next year. ---One more note - I wish they had used a better photo service. Meh... That's about it. I have run many an obstacle course and mud run...and this frankly was nothing special. I only found 2 obstacles any challenge whatsoever...the monkey bars (and only because they were slippery as hell)....which I still passed...and the floating barrels with the rotating balls of death...which nobody the day I ran made it through....kinda tough one at a time...add 2-3 others on your same line and no chance. Other than that it was like Ridiculous Minor Annoyances Race. I love me some Vavi..and this race wouldn't be bad for like $25...but for the price tag...the parking...and the fact it is only a 5K...just can't justify it again...unless you make the obstacles ones that not 90% of the general public can do without much effort. read more

First year participating for the Yelp Saturday team and it was crazy! I did get slightly scraped up and discolored from the colored powder that they sprayed. Thankfully I had sunglasses because many people could not see after the color obstacle after being sprayed in the eye. Warning to all participants, if you get hurt hopefully you have a team or someone to help you since First Aid and water stations seemed really sparse. Prepare to be wet and cold! Parking was an absolute pain even though we were there two hours before my leg started. Some words for the guy manning the hose at the third obstacle - you continuously spraying me is NOT going to make me go faster when I have crap in my eye! What a great event! If you missed it; definitely keep an eye for it next year. It was so much fun seeing all the various costumes and group ideas; in addition to watching my friends go through the obstacle course. I was not able to partake this year but will for sure next year. All of my friends had a blast and afterwards were given tons of free goodies from various vendors including a Yelp sweatband reading "Blood, Yelp, Tears". I heart Yelp!! read more

Ridiculous indeed!!!! My only issue with the course is that there are so many people that you will have to wait in line before most of the obstacles. But it does give you time to prepare yourself for another moistening since a good amount of the obstacles include water!!! The first actual obstacle (the foam doesn't count. It just looks and feels like you're trying to avoid getting jizzed on by a giant man) was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be! Gorilla bars huh....oh, you have guys dressed in gorilla outfits sitting ontop of the bars...that's it? NOPE! What made it more crazy was the girl in front of me, who I gave an ample head start, stopped as I caught up to her and we were pelvis to pelvis as we were both trying to hold on! I was yelling at he to keep going or for sure I would have fallen. I can tell many many stories about my experience or my teammates experiences, but just take my word for it. This course is amazing! The finale is something to be remembered! After the race, you get to check out many vendors, get a bunch of free stuff, and grab your included beer! Vendors gave things like soap, sports drinks, coconut water, stickers, and other cool stuff. Next time I will definitely have to dress up! Be prepared to possibly throw your shoes away and to definitely get wet! read more

This "race", is more of a fun way to get your friends and family out and involved more than anything. I did think most of the obstacles were kind of weak, sans the walking roller obstacle over water and the slide. The wall you had to "leap" over, ladder you had to climb and sideways wall were on the "eh" side. The best part about it? The GIANT slide. I could do it ten times over it was so fun cruising down that thing at who knows how fast of a speed. That was completely worth it. How about next year they just put 15 of those slides as obstacles? I'd pay $100 for that. The after party area was really cool. There were tons of vendors and lost do eat and drink, which is great since some events don't places where you can buy stuff afterwards. Big plus. Fun event to get you going and moving around, but depending on who you go with it may be more of a stroll pace than a real race! read more

This was a blast. Just finished the race yesterday. It was my first year representing Team Murph & Turf. I was impressed how well the course was set up. The obstacles were tons of fun. I agree with the other reviewers that the lines were a bit long for the obstacles especially the last 2 obstacles. The best thing of all is taking in all the other people and the creative and interesting outfits/costumes they sport while doing the race. Fun indeed! See you next year ROC Race! One last thing. I understand they need to serve cheap domestic beer as the free giveaway beer at the end. But, it'd be great if some of the better local breweries (Stone, Greenflash, Port Brewing, etc) had booths where people could purchase higher end craft brews. read more

An opportunity to dress up in costume and run through silly obstacle courses? I'm in! Team themes included Charlie Sheen's House Party (the team threw baby powder while running haha), Team Dirty Sanchez, Troll Dolls (well done with the hair-do's), and an honorable mention to my team, I'm on a Bender (Futurama)! The obstacle courses weren't as challenging as I would have liked. Aubrey D. was scared to sign up but she'll tell you it wasn't that bad! I thoroughly enjoyed the fire poles, rope swing, and the slip & slide course into the mud pit (wear old gear because you're bound to get dirty in this race). I'd also recommend a change of clothes/shoes afterwards so you don't have to wear soaked gear to the ROC Fest . What better way to finish a race than to pick up your free beer and join the human tunnel and conga line to the beats of live music? All in all, I thought the first annual ROC race was a success! I'd want more signs directed to the start of the race because quite a few of us didn't know where we were going. If you're going for a good finish time, keep in mind there are often lines to get on an obstacle but you can ask people to cut since you're racing ;) If you've ever wanted to be on American Gladiators this is your chance! read more

Even though I'm out of shape I had a lot of fun. A Wipeout tv show themed 5k with several obstacles. It was a lot of fun. My only complaint is this is a VERY expensive 5k. Nearly $70 and you don't even get a free medal at the end. If you want a medal it's an additional $35. That includes a tshirt, medal, sticker, and 2 bandaids. Very lame. To sign up you get a tshirt, 2 rubber wipeout bracelets, a temporary tattoo. Come on!!! For $70 (early bird price mind you) hook it up! The only good thing is now i get 43% off next years price if I sign up now. I'll probably sign up and do it again next year. It was a good time. They need more vendors too. They had like 2 or 3 food tents, and a few other random tents. Nothing exciting. read more

Pretty cool how they have Dr. Bronner's wash..where you basically get corralled and washed with soap and water in this see through box. They also give you free samples of the soap. roc race. where do i begin. ridiculous. not so much. obstacle course. sure. difficult. well. not at all. i liked it. it was fun. it's something you can do with your friends. your. out of shape friends. that are trying to get back into shape. you know. the ex-football player. that's now a tadbit overweight. and has three kids. and a corporate job. or for a bunch of young. beautiful. broke kids. thinking they're actually doing something physically challenging. but actually aren't. regardless of how you look at it. i see it as something you do with a group of friends. female friends. like strip poker. ok. who am i kidding. that won't ever happen for me. T_T anyways. the best part about this race has got to be the giant water slide. that motherf*cker was big. the worst part. was certain areas got congested. so if you were actually trying to finish for time. well. that wasn't going to happen. my favorite part was probably the tight rope. i was that assh*le. shaking the sh*t out of the rope. just so I could see you fall. and what i didn't get was that wrecking ball. walk on the rotating log type thing. you weren't going to make that regardless. oh. and mud. it gets in your eyes. and you may swallow a bunch of mud water. that was gross. so moving on. i'm pretty sure there's a picture of me walking around in a pair of yelp booty shorts. i know there is. i caught the two booth babes from the mma stand next to the yelp booth taking pictures of me. *that sh*t was funny -and some guy called me a pervert. If there is any fun 5k you should do it is the Ridiculous Obstacle Course (ROC). This run equates to the Japanese game show, "Takeshi's Castle" where contestants undergo a series of man made obstacle courses. Unlike the show, it is not just the obstacles but the quarter mile between each obstacle that makes this run interesting. In my experience, I felt the obstacles were adequately spaced until the last mile where the obstacles bunch up a bit and caused a pile up of runners, furthering delays in the run. I thoroughly appreciated the management and coordination of getting our items for the run, they have a real smooth operation. The establishment of pacing 75 runners every 15 minutes at the start line was also a good plan. From the MC at the start line to the volunteers throughout the run, the energy was high and very motivating. I also appreciate the watering stations that were set along the run. I have to admit though, my favorite was at the finish line with the sponsors. The "human car wash" (as I call it anyways) provided by Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps was much needed and "off the chain" fun. If I had my druthers I would do a 5k with a lavender foam shower coupled with a swim in some Lavender Coconut lotion incorporated into the run. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was so fresh and clean afterwards. This run was exceptional in that there were no children, most participants looked to be between high teens to thirties. Anyone interested in the ROC Run should get a group, have a theme, and be ready to challenge each other. I would definitely do a ROC Run again! read more

I'd have to say, this being my first time doing ROC race, I had a lot of fun. Although, the obstacles did seem pretty easy this year. My friends were telling me how there were a few more challenging obstacles last year like the tire mile and the concrete blocks. However, I do understand that they wanted to make it more appealing and easier for a wider age range. I recommend that you try to do an early wave. It gets way hot in the afternoon. The water also get more muddy as you go along. My favorite part of the ROC race was the foam party afterward! The warm water and soap really feel good when you're done. Do this with a bunch of friends--it makes it a lot more fun! read more

Had a great time. I laughed, got slapped, got wet and dropped in a pool of water....all in good company of friends.

Did this with my teenager and her friends; they had a great time and fun for me. It's not an event for a serious runner concerned with time but great to just get out and be active. Two small quibbles - only water tables (no Gatorade) and not nearly enough despite multitudes of volunteers standing around doing nothing and not enough bathroom facilities on the course. Offer more water next time, and get some port a potties! PS, when they say you're going to get wet, they're not kidding. Wear something you could deal with falling in a pool in. read more

Did this event for the first time. Loved some of the obstacles others could have been removed. No foam on the lane I hit for the "foam: obstacle. Venue is great. Lots of water stops on the course. Parking , check in , rolling starts, bag check, very easy. However, not sure what the rubber wrist bands were for? No instructions in packet pick up bag. Someone said "free" beer in another post? Should really call it an event/run not a race since it is untimed. IF you're looking for a "ridiculous" event, put it on your "to do" list. Overall, lot's of good fun. read more

Had a BLAST this weekend!! We had a fantastic time!!! Obstacles were amazing!! The only thing that needs to be improved is the wait time on the obstacles. Most of them were 5 minutes which is totally fine, but the 2 of them at the end were over 30 minute waits!!!! So we added on additional hour to our time waiting for them! We had a great time though!
