    2013 Silver Strand Half

This is a great run! Where else can you run a 1/2 marathon with nice view. So it's flat and it is a bonus and the beer garden at the end is always a welcome site after 13.1 miles of running. You start at at Coronado and end up in Imperial Beach (a hidden gem in my opinion since it's pretty local-so far). The local shops are great and very hospitable. I will just need to train more and maybe next year break my 20 minute mile record :) I can't wait to to it again next year.

    Around mile 3.8 or so

This was my first time running this race and my first half-marathon but I'm boggled by the reviews that there was no view or nothing to look at! You start out running by the Hotel Del, then the Shores and bay followed by the Naval warfare base (If running by the SEAL training base can't get you pumped up what can?) finally out onto the strand with views of the bridge and bay to your left and the waves crashing on the beach to your right. There are a few times when the berm is to tall to see over but generally those times you can view the wetlands to your left for something to look at. The camber of the road is pretty brutal from mile 6-7 but the rest of the time isn't bad. Finally the "hill" around mile ten was a bit painful but hey you get to come down in at mile 11 so that should put some pep in your step. Mile markers were huge and easy to see, and there were plenty of aid stations. Beer garden was a total letdown unfortunately, the line was way to long for two tiny cups of beer. Fortunately I planned ahead and had a 12 pack in the cooler at the car to celebrate. The shirts and medals that they gave out were great and the shot blocks and protein bars were solid. ---- The expo was a let down but it's nice to have everything picked up beforehand and not have to do it the morning of. Also next time I'll get there 10 minutes before the start and not 45. Standing around waiting to go was blah.

Ran the 2012 Silver Strand Half Marathon with my son yesterday. This was the first half marathon for both of us. We parked at the Coronado City Hall and walked to the start. There was plenty of parking and they had shuttles picking people up, but we opted to walk. The weather was great, experienced just the slightest wind from about mile 3 to mile 6 or 7. There were water/energy drink stations every couple of miles which was nice to see, as well as port-a-potties. I have nothing to compare this to since it was the first time I had ran a half, but I made it through. At the finish there were finisher medals given to all the participants. There was also apparently a beer garden, but I was in no condition to be drinking. I was happy just to be standing! Maybe next year we'll participate - on Rollerblades!

Lame medal for half marathon!!! Com'on!!! This is like 1k medal for kids!!! I can buy this at Michaels!

Silver Strand Half Marathon: where runners and surfers co-mingle

This was my first race ever, the 5K, so for me it was spectacular. I'm also coming from the desert, Arizona, so the venue was perfect. Some reviewers complained you could not see the ocean throughout. You may be spoiled. We saw the ocean at the start and finish. it was beautiful. And, where else can you see runners and surfers all in one spot. Great music, great volunteers. Putting your feet in the ocean at the end . . . priceless!

So here's the thing…read more.. If you've been chasing the CA Half Series, you'll likely end up at the San Diego Holiday Half medal race. Whether you're completing four races, seven, ten, fifteen, or twenty--even if you're solely running SD--the Holiday Half is where you'll be awarded your much-deserved medals. So since you're running SD Holiday Half anyway--you might as well run the San Diego South Bay Turkey Trot 15K and snag an extra challenge medal for running both. The medal in question: the Winter Exacta Medal! To qualify, you must run the 15K--it's the same medal for all three finished runs--but Rohr Park offers a beautifully scenic course, lots of runners are colorfully costumed to fit the holiday theme, and everyone is in high spirits. After all, a pre-run on Thanksgiving morning is certainly invigorating and refreshing, especially when knowing a turkey celebration and an exciting day of football is soon to follow. After logging a few, early morning miles, turkey seconds (and thirds), smashed cauliflower, and a bit of cranberry sauce is welcomed. Earn it!

With all the Turkey Trots around San Diego, this one is the only one that gave out a finishers medal at the end. Though the medals were the same for the 5k, 10k ,and 15k the ribbon was a different color. No biggie. The bib pick up was in the same place the day before. Because it got dark, they had to set up lights for people to find their names, sign the liability sheet and pick up their goodie bag which consisted your tshirt. Other than that, there was nothing else in there but a coupon. The day of the run was simple. There were two white signs that said start and orange cones that lead the running path. Parking was tricky since there are several parking lots around the park. They started the 15k people at 8am and then let the other runners go 5 mins later so not everyone bunched up in one area. But you had some faster runners in the 5k who caught up the 15kers pretty fast. The course was a mix of wet grass, dirt trail and concrete. The runners started thinning out by the first mile and there was only one water station along the way for the 5k course. As for the 10k and 15k, I'm not sure if there was any more water stations but it was not expected to be hills! My only suggestions to improve this race is to have mile markers. There was none along the way and folks who never ran the course have no idea where or how far we were from the finish line. And an elevation chart would be great too for those running the 10k/15k. The timing for the course came out the same day which was great and there were plenty of snacks and water to replenish after the race.

The expo was on Broadway Pier located Downtown on the Embarcadero on Friday and Saturday while you had the chance to pick up your BIB and a lovely swag running jacket . I was in and out in no time with all my gear and of course free samples of chocolate and marshmallows! Sunday was race day and the 5k (3.2 mi) started at 645 am while the 15k (9.3 mi) started at 745am at K street in Downtown San Diego right next to Petco Park. The race was well organized with live music and photographers taking pictures. As for the course it was one of the funnest courses I have ran with hills on top of hills. As I runner you always have to remember what must go up must come down! The course was well managed with volunteers giving out electrolytes, water, and of course sweet treats such as chocolates and gummies every couple of miles. We were fortunate to have a parking driveway reserved for us, but the traffic was really bad and people were parking many many blocks away from the beach area. Paid parking lots were even farther away.. Overall this was a fun time, though I suppose if you came here for just for the sandcastles you might be disappointed. This year's theme was "Pirates" and I think they did a good job hiring the right people to entertain guests. Bonus points for not hiring that fake Jack Sparrow that seems to find himself at every event in San Diego. They also had a large kid area for various crafts. Sandcastles - After talking with some of the locals I found out that the professional sandcastle builders no longer come to this event and it's much smaller than previous years ( back when the US Open for Sandcastles was held here). So come with an open mind if you're looking for true master craft sandcastles. Food - Various street vendors and food trucks. I think the best options were the big slices of pizza, and the street tacos sold next door. Tip - If you're just wanting to see sandcastles you might want to come after 4pm.. The festival ends at 5 and people start leaving en masse. Plus you get to see a sunset too. - Imperial Beach doesn't have a lot of beach area between the ocean and where the castles were made. You're going to have to hike a bit to find some empty beach space. That is unless you want to sit yourself by the sandcastles ( Which surprisingly / not surprisingly some people seemed to be okay with castle watchers standing on their beach towels and invading their personal space...

And since so much is going on, there are many flocking to Coronado Beach for the day's festivities. Arriving early--and I mean early--is well-advised. The Crown City Classic emails possible parking locations; but, again, it'll be busy. We arrived before 6am to pick-up our bibs and shirts, but it still wasn't early enough to get free parking. It had already been claimed. However, The Marriott's parking lot was available. Of course, there was a fee ($11 for the first two hours), but that's life. Besides, parking at The Marriott placed runners directly next to the race's start and finish. Next time, we're bringing our bikes, parking a bit further away if need be, and riding in. There are plenty of places to lock up bikes, and many runners had thought the same thing. I have to say that the best part of the race, the most creative addition, was the start: we all ran underneath Old Glory, majestically flowing above our heads within hands' reach. It really was a nice touch to begin this classic run. Coupled with running through the Coronado Naval Base, runners' patriotism flourished. Red, white, and blue proudly wound around this course, as spectators encouraged everyone to keep it up! It's a great way to kick off the 4th of July festivities. Of course, the route bottlenecks here and there at first; however, it eventually thins out. But this race, it's all in fun. And the themed shirts and the medals--you know I love running for super cool medals--made this celebration complete. =]

I checked out the details and map on the website, which was easy to navigate and made it looks even more fun. If you want to sign up, save yourself some money by signing up early, and looking for discounts for the race (I actually got 15% off just by searching 'Crown City Classic Discount' on google). It came to around $35 I think. The race has two days to pick up packets. 2016 was at roadrunner sports in Kearny Mesa 2 days before the race, and on Coronado one day before the race. I wasn't able to pick them up at either one so I had to get it at the actual event. I actually found a good parking spot, and that's considering I got there a little later than I wanted (I got there at 6:30) but I'm sure even getting there 10-15 minutes more, finding parking would have been almost impossible, so make sure you get there early. The event was really well organized and made finding everything easy. From packet/shirt pick up, to the start and finish line. They had a DJ and a guy warming people up before the race started. The race starts in waves, and by class. First ones to go are the 12k (7.4 miles as patriotically explained). If you're running for the win/time, they'll have you up at the front. If you're doing it for yourself or some other reason, they'll have you in the back. Second start was the 5k, with the same starting classes, and people walking in the back. There's also a kids half mile fun run, but I wasn't around for that so I'm not sure where they do it or how that goes. I'm sure it was good though. It gets crowded when you first take off, especially under the flag(which was VERY cool btw), but the chip on your number will get your exact time. The course was pretty linear and marked so you know where to go. It was an easy run as there weren't any extreme uphills or downhills, just a couple slopes here and there. However, when you're on the street, look up for the speed bumps! I almost tripped on one while I was running LOL! There were 2 water stations up and down the course for the 5k runners, and 4 for the 12k runners. Volunteers were great. Once you finish, they hand you your medal and have tables with water, banana's granola bars and some other snacks. Very cool of them to have that their! They also take your picture when you're coming in to the finish to post on the website for you to download later. So definitely be aware of that, people! :p Overall, it was such a fun race and unless I make plans to go somewhere else for 4th of July, I'll definitely be signing up for this one again. Thanks for making it great, guys! :D

This course is hilly, regardless which one you choose and the half takes you through Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, Balboa Park and then downtown, with the race festival being at Waterfront Park the past few years. Unlike the DMMR- the course was natural terrain and there was a mud pit every 20'. It wasn't just muddy water, there was different textures of mud in every pit. This was also more family-oriented (vs. DMMR). There were costumes, but they were tasteful. There were more families enjoying the day together, than a bunch of young 20/30-somethings out for publicity. AND, let me not forget to add that the showers kicked ass. The DMMR had 2 people on a raised platform (15' high), with a garden hose- spraying us down. The SDMR had 2 sets of showers with water being pushed through pvc pipes (firehose-strength)- 24 shower heads in all. There was also a 'love for fitness' present at the SD Mud Run. One thing that was crazy annoying. The Kiddie Mud Run. It was the last run of the day, which is fine. But in order for the kids to start we had to wait for every last adult runner to cross the finish line, no matter how slow they were (the track needed to be altered for the kids- their mini-mudrun used the last 1k of the course). I wish (instead), the organizers would've altered the course so that the kids could start their race at the same 'Start' line as the adults- that way there wouldn't have been much waiting. It's hard to keep kids in check when they're stoked about playing in the mudpits! Overall- awesome experience! My daughter cant wait for the next one! They have 2 pick-up locations on Park Blvd, one at the corner of Presidents Way and the other at Zoo Place. Currently they reward you with the Triple Crown medal in addition to the finisher medal when you've completed the 3 race series in the same calendar year. They also reward you with the Triple Triple Crown medal when you've completed the Triple Crown 3 times.

But I, like many others, traveled to San Diego in order to run this race on top of obviously paying for it. When the time came for options after it was cancelled, they only let you defer to next year's, or choose between 3 other races and offered 50% off lol. No option for a refund. We just got our meal with the deferral code to sign up. I paid $149 to run in the race in August, the race is currently $99. I thought it was reasonable to ask for a code to receive pictures/video ($25 value). Since again, I paid $149 initially and was given no option for a refund of my money. The woman who emailed back, Ellen, responded with attitude and with something that had nothing to do with my question. I then had to email back reiterating my question, and she responded back saying no and cited me signing up late last year. Which I don't believe has anything to do with the dollar value that I'm trying to get back (again, considering a refund wasn't even an option). I will definitely not sign up for this one again.
