Mixed bag here. I thought the food was good, not great. Just good. The desserts were just ok…read more But I thought the show was excellent. This is my first lu'au even though I live in Hawaii. I was impressed. I thought the performers were awesome, especially the fire dancers. Just really awesome and the dancers were enthusiastic which made for a better performance. I thought the audio was a bit off. The volume was crazy loud to fill the huge tent but it was hard to hear the individual voices of the narrators. So maybe something to boost the midrange a bit in the balance of the sound system or whatever. I'm not a sound engineer. So if you're visiting Kauai and are looking for a lu'au, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kalamaku. I think you'll have a good time.

I feel like if this is your first luau, it's worth the price, but I would not pay the same amount to attend a second time. They have a pretty good variety, and number of vendors stationed in their outdoor area. The items sold range from sweets, to jewelry, to little knick-knacks. It's a pretty good selection of things for people looking to buy gifts to bring back home. The ambiance is very lively and enjoyable however at times it felt a little too lively since there were a good amount of kids running around. It would've been fantastic if there existed the option to attend a child-free luau. How enjoyable the event is would also depend on where people are seated. People on the outskirts of the stage would have a harder time being able to listen and watch the show, while people closer to the stage would have an amazing time. My party got to have both experiences since we were initially seated on the outskirts and were brought closer to the center. It really upgraded the experience. The food was pretty hit or miss. Some of it was pretty good, specially for the catering style service, while other dishes were less than average. The drink options weren't the best. If you've a sweet tooth the open bar would be fantastic, though, as all their options were definitely on the sweet side. It would be nice to be able to opt out of the open bar, or have more options for those that want less sugar with their alcohol. Between all the good and the bad, I think this totals out to a very average luau experience. 3/5

The worst EVER!! I cannot emphasize enough that this place…read moreis a scam and NOT a luau!!! Not our first Luau, we've been to several on each island, so we knew what to expect. We paid $153 per person, so definitely had high expectations. Boy were we disappointed!!!!! First of all it's NOTHING as they advertise in their videos. It is not facing the ocean on the lawn. No one to greet you with any kind of lei. No hula dancers to take pictures with. No pig roasting ceremony. No welcome drinks... nothing!! This is NOT a luau. It's a scam! An overpriced buffet dinner. The bar only serves three types of drinks...wine, beer and Mai tai. You only get ONE drink with your luau purchase, Anymore after that, you have to buy it cash which is not disclosed anywhere. So if you got no cash with you, you can enjoy tap water all night. Also no orchids in the drinks you buy either. The buffet display had no esthetics, Zero effort was made to at least make it look pleasing. The display was as basic as your average buffet restaurant. Food choices were very basic and average. The show was very boring for the most part. The best of this whole Luau was the fire dancers. Very talented! I honestly wish we would have just done the fire show at the Hilton and saved ourselves $60. We wanted the whole Luau experience and the best on the island. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. Don't waste your money it's not worth it! THIS IS NOT A REAL LUAU!!!! We are so sad we wasted our time and money, and did not get to experience a real Luau. Do yourself a favor and book Kalamaku luau instead they're amazing!

Also neat that it's a family business with some performers from the family. The show wasn't too long and there was a nice break for folks who wanted to try to dance. I'm glad we didn't pay extra for the pre-show hotel dinner...those luau-style entrees can be ordered at many other restaurants/takeout places where the food can be better.

They also had a live band playing, which created a fun atmosphere and it looked like a lot of people were really enjoying themselves. If you're just looking for a quiet place to sit and eat, though, it can get a bit loud, nothing against the live music, just something to keep in mind depending on what kind of dining experience you're looking for. The ahi nachos were a bit disappointing for us. The ahi itself was fresh and tasted great, but the "nachos" were actually more like fried wontons instead of traditional nacho chips, which felt a little odd and just wasn't really our thing. It would've helped if that was disclosed on the menu or if the server gave a quick heads up beforehand so expectations were clearer. On the positive side, the Tempura Ahi Bites were our favorite dish out of everything we ordered, definitely the standout item for us. The rib plate was also decent with satisfying portions overall.

All we expected! Note: going early to spend extra time in…read morethe gardens isn't really an option. They open at 4:30. They take your picture on the way in ($30, ready at the show if you want to purchase it), then we boarded the tram. The guide shares about the plants, views, some history, and points out many things along the ride. We were free to roam the gardens until the imu ceremony. Many beautiful plants, trees, picturesque spots. I can see why weddings happen here! I found a beautiful spent flower on the ground I was curious about and took it to one of the aunties. She didn't know, but immediately brought me to another family member who identified it right away. So helpful! You can claim your dinner spot if you'd like (groups are reserved, otherwise it's open) while everyone's exploringthe grounds. When it's time to open the imu, the host explains the culture and history in an engaging way, then it's time to eat! They have a good system for sending tables up to eat so nobody's rushing. Mai tais (open bar included) were smooth and delicious! Food was excellent, all you can eat. Plenty of time to eat, enjoy company, listen to the music (wasn't too loud--yay!) while talking, and then we headed to the show. The seats were padded stadium seats, and rather comfortable. The show lasted about 50 minutes. Professional and nicely done. We both loved our entire time there. We'd been told this is the one to go to, but we searched Yelp anyway. It was clear from the reviews it was a good fit for us and we were not disappointed. Spendy, yes, but for dinner and a show (and the tour through the gardens), it's not that bad. We were very pleased.
