We loved the Luau when visiting Kauai! Amazing food for a buffet! Everything was delicious. The show after was just as good! Definitely arrive early so you can explore the grounds, it's absolutely stunning! Highly recommend checking out

We spent a rainy day doing this boat tour on our first day in Kauai. The boat tour went to the fern grotto. While it was pretty and I enjoyed the scenery, the tour was a bit cheesy. The tour boat was cover though and did keep us dry. On the ride down the river they play music and teach you how to hula. To get to the fern grotto from the dock, we had to follow a guide. The guide walked at a snail's pace and was very grumpy and rude. This was by far the worst part of the tour. The fern grotto was incredible though and a different, much more pleasant guide, took over once we got there. On a nice day, I would definitely rent kayaks and go to the fern grotto instead. The fern grotto is a short walk from the dock and it's gorgeous. The river itself is the real attraction here in my opinion. Rent a kayak and spend some time exploring!

Overall: While it's a rather large-scale operation, Smith's knows what they're doing and how to throw a good Luau. Definitely recommend! The good: Gorgeous space - Plants and animals of all types throughout the entire, massive compound. It really is a sight to behold, with lush greens and blooming flowers. The buffet-style food was, for the most part, really good. The highlight of the meal, kalua pork, was fantastic - tender and flavorful. The staff, whether it was the waiters, bartenders, dancers, and bussers, were all friendly and helpful. The not-so-good: The poi was watered down and not flavorful at all, and the mai tai's were hardly effective alcohol-wise. The seating for the dance portion of the night was also crammed and the seats themselves were uncomfortable. Food/drink: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Atmosphere: 8/10

Came here during our visit to Kauai. Was not expected to be so packed but it was. Not overly so, just a lot of people. We arrived around 5-515pm. I used a previous reviewer's review to figure out the itinerary for the night (check it out, it was accurate to the T). The visit started off with a trolley-type tour around the grounds. Then it deposited us at the imu ceremony location that was starting at 6pm. Until the imu ceremony, we walked around the grounds taking pictures and also staked our seats (per the reviewer, and also per me, if you want first dibs on the food, you have to sit alongside the tables immediately facing the imu ceremony). It's kind of hard to explain but one of the employees also told us how the order would be. The imu ceremony was cool, and fast, because by that time we were so hungry. After that was done, they brought us to the dining room area and we first had drinks. Now, it is unlimited drinks until 730pm. I seriously thought they would be watered down, but they weren't. So be careful. You have your choice of mai tais (premade), beer, wine and other cocktails of your choice. There are also non-alcoholic drinks. Now for the meal, oh, the meal. I thought it was delicious. I tried to taste everything, from the salad to the poi (interesting; they had warned us), to the chicken, and the pineapple fish, to the bread. However, the VERY BEST part of the meal was the pig. OH the pig. I have had pulled pork before (I lived in the South) and you eat pulled pork with BBQ sauce (honestly, I think it's because the pork is basically tasteless). But this Hawaiian pulled pork was THE VERY BEST pulled pork you will ever have. I am not exaggerating even though it seems like it. It was absolutely FLAVORFUL and you did not need, by ANY means, any sauce to make it more tasteful (actually that would have made it worse). During the dinner, you also had some musicians, but if you sit along the outside of the dining area, facing the imu, your view is mostly blocked by pillars. But it was nice to listen to. Before the 8pm luau show, we actually also staked our seats in the very front (mostly because we wanted to go to a more quieter area). I swear they had mentioned the Luau was going to be 30min, but it was a whole hour and we started a bit late. The show was lovely, but call it food coma and/or a bit of alcohol infused tiredness, but I had a bit of trouble watching the entire thing. It was beautiful, the dancers were fantastic, just a bit long (FOR ME specifically). Overall, this was a great experience. I absolutely loved it and for anyone who has never seen a Luau, I'd definitely recommend!

This was a great luau! I booked via Expedia and just showed up to the event with the vouchers. The process went smoothly. Once you enter, you get on a tram, which takes you around the grounds while the driver explains some of the flora. Next is gathering around the imu to watch them remove the kalua pig they've been cooking. Then, you head to the banquet area and pick a seat. There's live music and an open bar (wine, beer, mai tais) while you wait for your table to be called up to the buffet. They have many of the traditional luau food items like the pig, lomi lomi, poi, macaroni salad, guava bread, along with other dishes like short ribs, fish, and salad. For dessert, they have haupia, rice pudding, papaya, and pineapple. The food was better than I expected it to be. Normally, buffets serving mass quantities of food are just okay. Plus, they encourage you to go up for seconds. After dinner is when the show starts, at around 9 pm. You take a short walk to the ampitheater for an hour-long performance of hula dancers, fire dancers, some Hawaiian history. It felt a little long, but that might have been because we were exhausted from being out all day on boat excursion. The only annoying thing is the shuttle. It didn't mention on the Expedia voucher that there would be a complimentary shuttle (I believe this is only to/from Aqua Kauai Beach Resort, which is where I happened to be staying. Other hotels might be extra). We didn't find out until we were leaving, when the guy asked if we were going there. Other than the whole transportation snafu, the luau was still a great experience.

Gorgeous view! No one was there, just us and the chickens who followed us around the entire time. The trees, flowers and wildlife were breathtaking. The attendant at the front was so pleasant. We were offered umbrellas from the sun which were given back after our walk. We just walked the grounds, nothing else, but we enjoyed every part of what was shown.

the very nice folks (including the founder's great, great, great, grandkids) at SMITH's TROPICAL PARADISE LUAU work really, really hard at getting it right: huge venue, gorgeous grounds, careful attention to detail. there are giant challenges in sharing "an authentic island experience" with hordes of goofy tourists and by-and-large they do it masterfully. from the time you walk through the gates and board the tram for a tour of the grounds and a visit with the giant stone statue of Uncle Aku, there's a bit of magic about this place. particularly loved the ritual surrounding the unearthing of the Kaula pig. from their website: "The heart of any luau is the pa'ina, the feast, and we'll make sure you don't go hungry." SMITH's TROPICAL PARADISE LUAU kept that promise. the food was good and had the feel of an upscale, pot luck dinner. i'm Kama'aina and have eaten at enough graduation and wedding luaus for it to feel familiar. after stuffing ourselves on Kalua pig, teriyaki beef, mahi-mahi, chicken adobo, and (always my favorite) lomi lomi salmon, we waddled over to the outdoor amphitheater to watch the show. again from their website: "Food may be the heart of a luau, but music is the soul. Our Hawaiian ancestors preserved their history by passing down songs and chants called mele. At our luau, we celebrate these traditions, as well as the songs and dances from other cultures that live in our tropical paradise. The lyrical sway of the Hawaiian hula, the colorful precision of the Tahitian drum dances and the fiery emotion of the Samoan fire knife dance all speak deeply of the people who have come to call Hawaii home." to: Kamika Smith, our joyful and generous host. mahalo for your sharing your aloha spirit with my son and me.

Darkness and fire is how this ends. I visited a luau on my first visit to Hawaii. In the beginning one of the owners takes us on a tour of the garden and tells about how the Smith family began having luau's on the property. Afterwards we walked around the grounds and got close with all the cool plants and birds. A horn blows to assemble us around an imu oven. There is a ceremony to unearth a pig from the imu oven in the ground. The pig was buried earlier to cook with hot rocks and wrapped in banana and ti leaves. Ironwood is burned to provide most of the heat and to add aroma. Hawaiian sea salt is the only spice added to the pig. The resulting kalua pork was tender, juicy and full of rich flavor. Delicious kalua pork fresh from an imu oven is one of my favorite parts of a luau as it's the only place I know of to get kalua pork prepared this way. The buffet was all you can eat and I started with a sample plate then I loaded up with kalua pork. Kalua pork was melt in your mouth tender and juicy. There was that awesome smoky flavor you can only get from a pig smoked all day in a imu oven. Teriyaki beef was tender, and had a delicious sweet and beefy flavor. Adobo chicken was good. Mahi mahi had a real nice fresh flavor but I don't like sweet and sour sauce so the local cat got a free meal. Sweet Hawaiian pineapple + papaya was delicious. I loved the spongy coconut cake but did not care for the frosting. Haupia had a jello like texture which I loved but the flavor was not quite the same as Helena's in Oahu which is my gold standard. After that great meal it was time for the show. There were beautiful dances by hula girls, many island dances and at the end fire dancing. It was amazing how the fire dancer was one with the flame and together they bonded and thrilled the crowd. All too soon the show was over and we followed the flames back to our car.

Smith's Tropical Paradise, Family Garden Luau & Rhythm of Aloha Show 08/22/2017 What first drew me to this place was that fact it's been a family business for the last 60 years! That in itself is very impressive to me because it shows such unsurpassed family devotion, unity and loyalty that you just don't see too much of on the mainland. Upon arrival our eyes were greeted with acres of Hawaiian flora and fauna. The narrated tram ride around the 30 acre botanical & cultural garden ( over 20 plus types of fruit) property was beautifully dreamlike. Boarding the tram a senior family member greeted everyone along with his two pet dogs. Of course I had to pet the dogs. After the tram ride your free to wander the property, stake out your place at the eating tables (we just left my hat) and discover each and every gem peppering this paradise. They do a traditional Imu ceremony, complete with shell trumpet, singing & prayer. Shortly after the Luau feast begins serve yourself style with seconds encouraged after everyone has been served once. On the main stage you are entranced by lovely Hawaiian singers & music putting everyone in the mood for the upcoming show. My favorite singer by far was Kamika Smith, his voice & Ukulele skills are truly magical. I made sure to give him a compliment after his performance. My unexpected and most welcome dinner companion was a local cat. Chatting with one of the Smith's I found out she just had babies, but nobody had seen them yet since her hiding spot had not been found. She just showed up a few days prior with her belly flatter, but no kitties. At first I was a bit apprehensive they might tell me not to feed her, (she loved the mahi-mahi) but it was the opposite, they were very pleased to see someone feed her. Ohhhh the food, don't know where to begin as each dish surpassed the last. It was hard to concentrate on anything else because the food shined so brightly. Which of course made it hard to stop eating. The food was offered Buffett style with two very long tables laden with numerous dishes. The drink stations and dessert stations were separate. Seconds were encouraged after everyone attending had their first plate. So once your completely full, it's time to head off to the Rhythm of Aloha Show. My favorite feature of the show is the performance diversity showcasing, Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Philippines, New Zealand, China and Japan. For the fire dances, it's not only the men, women hold their own enchanting fire dance as well. We managed to record some of it and I've played it back a bunch of times now. Each performance was spot on, the energy exchanged between the dancers is contagious. The theatrics including the erupting volcano is breathtaking. The synergy between the live band and dancers is remarkable. This place will live on in your memory.

SMith is "the other" luau dinner in Kauai. One of the top two on the islands. The feast are just "the rest". This is a real family style dinner, property and business. The owners dad welcomes you with their family dog. The owner is the MC and he also helps serve and clean food. The dining experience is amazing and the food is wonderful. It's authentic island flavors and methods and they explain the customs at this show much more than the other. The other one is More theatrical and historic. This show is the family members on a stage in a little pond amphitheater that is very nice and customary dances with a voiceover but not as elaborate as the othe. Bring bug repellent they will get you.

Such a hospitable group! I didn't know what to expect as this was my first luau, but I didn't regret it! The surrounding land was beautiful and very instagram-worthy and the food was exquisite! I highly enjoyed learning how they cooked the pig and the historical tidbits offered throughout. It seemed like the folks running the show learned from past experiences and were able to accommodate large groups without lengthy delays. Drinks flowed and the food was abundant. They could probably change up the schedule of the performers by the end of the night as my family and I entered a food coma and the wait for the fire performance (which was our main draw) felt long. Nonetheless, I would definitely come here again if provided the opportunity.

I had the most amazing 4 hours in Kauai while attending Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau. The tour started off with a brief tour of the garden, which was beautiful and created great photos. There were numerous chickens, chicks and peacocks roaming around the garden, with pretty flowers and some oddly aesthetic trees. Definitely an eye-opening experience for the nature-lovers. Foodies like myself would also enjoy the kahlua pork and buffet segments. The food was a bit limited, but tasty - especially the adobo chicken, fried rice, beef, rice pudding and coconut jelly. There were some dishes that I could've done without, but all in all, the food was pretty decent. Drinks were watered down, but you can't complain about the unlimited supply. The one downside about the meal that must be mentioned was the volume of the live music. We weren't situated too far from the stage and barely heard a thing! The dinner would've been that much better if we ate with pleasantry to our ears. Lastly, the luau performance was awesome! The ladies shook what their mommas gave them and the fire show was out of the world. The one negative thing I can say about the show was how horribly the young group of men were dancing. They were out of sync and showed no expertise nor enthusiasm. I would've been fine just watching the ladies shaking their bom boms. Oh, speaking of which, my bom bom was in pain sitting on the uncomfortable bench for an hour. That's an area where the luau can improve. Besides that, I would definitely recommend Smith's to Kauai visitors.

Kahlua pig (1 of 3 for the evening)

Quite late posting a review here, but Smith's deserves the praise. This family-run luau and gardens provides visitors with a great glimpse into Hawaiian aloha spirit! AMBIANCE (5/5) The Smiths cultivate beautiful 30-acre gardens representing a number of Hawaiian and Asian cultures, complete with tropical fruit trees, charming islands connected by bridges, and pavilions. Arrive on the earlier side and take the guided tram tour or stroll about! The luau is held beneath a permanent covered structure and easily seats 250-300+ guests, and the show afterward is held at an amphitheater next door that has covered bleacher seating and an open stage. FOOD (4.5/5) The Imu ceremony unearthing the kahlua pig from its underground oven is very interesting - and the kahlua pork is delish!!! Unlimited drinks by way of wine, beer, and mai tais along with sodas, juices, water, tea, and coffee are available from the cocktail hour on. Smith's offers multiple buffet lines for ease of operations, and each buffet is stocked with a wide variety of Hawaiian dishes: kahlua pork, teriyaki beef, adobo chicken, lomo salmon, poi, purple sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, pickled three bean salad, green salad with choice of two dressings, assorted breads, coconut cake, coconut jelly, and rice pudding. I liked the pork, three bean salad, and coconut cake the most! SHOW (4.5/5) Wow! The Smiths put on an excellent sequence of dances that cover the numerous cultures that have influenced Hawaii. From Polynesian dancing to Samoan fire knife twirling, we were thoroughly impressed by the repertoire, costumery, and skill of the younger members of the family. SERVICE (5/5) The MC, a third-generation Smith, was incredibly funny and welcoming! Several family members circulated to say hello. The evening was interspersed with hula dancing, hula lessons, and jokes. Servers roved constantly offering water, coffee, and tea and quickly cleared used buffet plates. I would wholeheartedly recommend this luau to folks visiting Kauai!

Thus, taking a chocolate tour (and sampling chocolate) became something my wife wanted to do during our visit to Kauai. I booked it on the first day on the island, with cost being $140 per person via Viator, and was able to reserve spots for the following day at 11:00. It's well set-up with clear signs pointing you to the farm (need to pass by other houses through a small residential area). Guides will tell you where to park your car...we intentionally came only 10 minutes before the start and were some of the last ones to arrive. Our tour was fully filled with a maximum of 25 guests. The property is hilly, and the tour does involve a bit of walking, with 3 separate sitting areas where we sampled different foods. In our initial gathering spot, we met Mason (our primary guide). He later told us that he was going into civics. His charismatic personality and willingness to help others, really serves his guests well during the tour and his future (in politics, I'm assuming). We learned a lot about the farm, and had access to bathrooms, natural bug spray (mosquitos definitely bite here) with a place to wash hands, and distribution of umbrellas (for the occasional shower and protection from the sun). Got to sample an apple banana and cocoa tea while learning about the history of the farm. There was so much information, I had to take notes on my smartphone...apologies if I looked like I was not paying attention. In addition to the 3968 cacao trees on the farm (46 acres), other products are grown and raised to supplement the viability of the main crop: apple bananas whose leaves are used the cacao fermentation process; honey from the 50 hives to pollinate the cacao (the parasitic destructor mites that have devastated honey bee hives across the world have not yet made it to Kauai...makes me appreciate the Hawaiian agricultural controls); the vanilla plant vines that are hand pollinated to produce such rare extract that the public can't buy it. We walked to the second spot, passing by various plants and crops. There we sampled unusual tropical fruit (rambutan, soursop, and white pineapple), chocolate covered macadamia nuts (grown in Hawaii), and different honeys. Made me love mac nuts again. The final spot was to taste the chocolate bars. We sampled 5 of theirs (70% dark, 70% with sea salt, 75% with rum, 78% reserve, 50% milk with coffee/nibs), 3 Valrhona, and 1 Hershey. Mason gave a demonstration by hand of how cocoa liquor is made from the fermented seeds (this part is done by machine at a plant in Oahu...their plan is to do future expansion in Kauai so they can emphatically state that it is a completely Kauai product). The 70% dark 1/8 lb bars are $18, and I ended up buying quite a few to give as gifts (Mason didn't buy this explanation). We tried one bar when we got home, and can confirm how creamy and sweet they are (no bitterness). Other tidbits: -- chocolate is a fruit, not a bean or vegetable. -- Only Hawaii can grow it in U.S. -- Grafting is common for consistency -- Chocolate is purple. Black means there were moldy shells. No mold here, so discarded shells can be made into tea -- Most macadamia nuts sold in Hawaii are grown in Australia, and only packaged in Hawaii. -- White chocolate is real chocolate, just using cocoa butter only. -- AI will tell you dark chocolate is bitter cause raw cocoa is earthy (i.e. bitter). Instead, Mason proposed that it was because mass production causes uneven, incomplete fermentation. Smaller batches = careful watching = less bitterness. This was a revelation to me. -- the owner is a fifth generation farmer in Kauai, with him recently changing the name of his farm to his family name. -- At the 2023 Cacao of Excellence Awards held in Europe, Lydgate won the top prize (gold medal) for the Asia & Pacific region, along with six others in the same region, including 2 others from Hawaii. They had previously been named Top 50 in the world multiple times. -- Because they are such a popular tour, there are multiple time slots and days available. The most important thing to note about the quality of the chocolate: cacao plants bear fruit all year round, with Lydgate farms picking and fermenting by hand when it is the right time (as opposed to bigger operations where they combine ripe and unripe fruit all together for the sake of efficiency). Even for a layman like me, it was a convincing argument on why their dark chocolate is premium, costly, and has no bitterness (even at 70%). The major awards that they have received is just confirmation of this fact. And the tour being 3 hours long in such a small area...the time went by really fast.

I'd like to be transparent, I'm a little bit confused about a few things…read more.. I had reservations made ahead of time to hike the famed Kalalau Trail 2 miles to Hanakapi'ai Beach and another 2 miles to Hanakapi'ai Falls. Upon driving to the Kalalau Trailhead, I entered Ha'ena State Park. I thought to myself, "oh, wow, cool, I didn't even know Kalalau Trail was within a state park!". Now, lol, after parking my car and reviewing the Kalalau Trail hiking guidelines, it was time to venture over to Hanakapi'ai Beach. Not even 1 minute into the trail, there was a clear sign stating I was now entering Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. What??? But I thought Kalalau Trail was part of Ha'ena SP?! So both? What's the difference between Ha'ena SP and Na'Pali Coast SP? I guess the only thing to do is venture over to Google and search for the answer... The only reasonable solution I discovered on Google is Ha'ena SP hosts the parking lot for Kalalau Trailhead. But, once you start hiking on Kalalau Trail land, you're officially now entering and located within Na'Pali Coast boundaries. And with this info...I believe there are more options for activities within Ha'ena State Park, although I never got around to do any exploring. Now, if you're specifically visiting here for the Kalalau Trail, I'm convinced it's Na'Pali Coast territory, lol. Finally, trying to get to the bottom of this strange mystery, is when visiting Kokee State Park on the opposite side of the island of Kauai, most of the overlooks and lookout points there showcased the Na'Pali Coast. But I guess for Kokee SP, you're not actually inside Na'Pali Coast State Park land, you're just admiring the views and sceneries of the Na'Pali Coast from high above. Lol, yes...maybe I should have been better prepared ahead of time. With all this said...let me quickly return to the Kalalau Trail and provide a few highlights about the experience and what you can expect inside Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park... - While hiking to Hanakapi'ai Beach, a lot of the beautiful Na'Pali Coast setting will be revealed. There were moments to take a break from the trek to appreciate the landscape. - When the clouds went away and the sun shined, the coastline illuminated the Pacific Ocean waters. - You'll also capture a vantage point of Kauai's lush green island vegetation and rain forest appearance. In total, that's what I believe made Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park rewarding. It's hiking among nature until Kauai's colorful coast comes into appearance. The surroundings exude that vintage, tropical, Hawaiian image that tourists anticipate when visiting. At the time of visiting Kauai, I found it difficult to understand whether I was hiking Kalalau Trail within Ha'ena SP or Na'Pali SP. After completing some detailed internet research, I'm confident the popular hike is connected with Na'Pali. And with that understanding, Na'Pali Coast is a winning state park.

A few years ago, I managed to attend a meditation session presided by the monastery's guru & abbot Satguru Bodhinata Veylanswami. It was a solemn ritual that was both spiritual & inspirational. He led the meditations in a rhythmic & transformative fashion. It was mesmerizing to feel & hear. The way the temple was architecturally designed, it reverberated & I felt it touch my soul to my very core. You have to experience it for yourself to understand what it is all about. The grounds are well maintained by the monks & people from the community (volunteers). It is a lush landscape in a prime property of Kaua'i. Through the years I have seen how the main temple has been constructed. As you enter, there is a gazebo at the entrance where sarongs are provided for visitors. These are provided to have guests dress appropriately for respect before entering the temple. Additionally, there is a round stone hearth to "burn" your troubles away. Pieces of paper & pens are provided for you to write your "troubles, challenges, problems" and a couple of lighters so you may burn it to ashes. As i may have written in the past, it is a cathartic experience as you watch it burn away, and up it goes in smoke. Experience it....

Wailua Falls offered an incredibly close view, which made the experience feel special. I was able to truly appreciate the waterfall's beauty up close. One fun highlight was spotting a rooster sitting right near the edge, which was such a classic Kauaʻi island moment because roosters are everywhere on the island. I also noticed a touching memorial sign dedicated to Kavika Luna, "Mr. Aloha" - The Flying Hawaiian (May 1960 - September 2024). The message spoke about rainbows appearing as he chanted and the magic of Wailua Falls coming alive. It felt meaningful because I actually caught a mini rainbow during my visit, which made the moment even more breathtaking and memorable. Overall, I was very pleased with this stop. Wailua Falls is absolutely worth checking out for its natural beauty and history.

Named after a pillar in the community who came to Kauai in the late 19th century, Lydgate Beach Park is 62 acres, with the Lydgate Park pathway encompassing 2.5 miles, a small part of the much larger Ke Ala Hele Makālae costal trail. There is plenty of parking, with both dedicated surface lots and street parking on the paved road. We immediately noticed surfers on electric surfboards out pretty far, even on this windy day. At the northern part of the park is where most people gather, close to modern facilities and a manned lifeguard station and a large covered event area with plenty of parking. Closer to the shore, we saw a seal just lying on the land, bathing in the sun, completely ignoring the people milling by. The very large safe man-made swimming/tide pools are great for the kekei and others, with constant refreshing of sea water over the lava rocks. There are picnic tables nearby as well with a lot of green space. My favorite feature are the man-made protected swimming pools, What I loved about it was how spread out everything was, with so many amenities.
