I ordered the teriyaki beef plate. Maybe it me but my mac salad had too much potatoes. I know their version suppose to have potatoes but i didn't care for it. I really wanted to like this place. Love the vibe, small hole in the wall, great staff, but overall just okay food. As per usual with my reviews... here's the rundown. -Tsunami Beef: I'm used to beef shaved slices at Hawaiian restaurants and this were more like like strips and then dosed in a tsunami sauce. The con of strips is that it can get tough kinda of fast which this was. Also the sauce was just okay and for it being advertised as spicy it wasn't. -Chicken Katsu: The way that this was prepared was correct, but the strips of chicken that they used were small and kind of like the bottom of the barrel pieces. Overall this was one of the better parts of the meal and their katsu sauce is good, but i've definitely had better. -Kalua Pork: this was pretty good. It wasn't as juicy as I would have liked it but the bbq flavor was there. -Potato and Mac salad: yum, with brown rice. you have to make the correct bite with this mixture. the potato mac salad was a little more mustardy than I like but it did its job with the overall meal -Malasada: MUST ORDER. This is what saved the review (along with the staff), but the malasada is freshly made to order and it is like a hawaiian sweet bun donut rolled in sugar. if you have never had one before this is the time to try it. I'm used to it being cream filled but for this one not having any filling it was great. Hands down. best thing here. Overall, it was okay. Tasty food and quick service. Our favorite quick take-out restaurant that we frequent and enjoy regularly. We call ahead and in less than 10 minutes our order is ready to be picked up and off we go. We particularly like the Teriyaki chicken with noodles and mac salad. We also like to get the extra large portion so we have plenty of left overs. Super friendly staff. Seriously, great customer service! Very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We got the chicken katsu with greens, as spam musubi. To be in Bend, OR, it's pretty damn good! I guess it's the best Hawaiian joint in Bend. The katsu was crispy and good, big portion as well. And they have brown rice :D They even have the Hawaiian drinks in can that I love. This place serves some really good Hawaiian bbq. It actually has flavor compared to some of the other places I've eaten at. The kalua pork is tender, well seasoned and a heaping portion. I got a loco moco and it takes a while to cook so you know its fresh. Perfectly cooked egg with a burger, gravy and rice - can't really ask for much else. The burger I think was a bit too well done for my liking, but it had plenty of sear and char on it to lock in that flavor and provide some texture contrast. That gravy just ties everything together, especially once you pop that runny egg. Definitely would come back - its worth going out of the way for and if you order something from the top half of the menu, the food comes out really fast. read more

My friends and I were on our way to Sunriver, and because I'd Yelped this place ahead of time we agreed to eat lunch here. Well, really...I was driving, my car is full of Hawaiian decals and has a Hawaiian word license plate, so did they have a choice? Well, yeah, they did, sort of. Seriously though, they were in favor of our stopping here. The second I walked in, it felt like home. The aroma of kalua pig filled the air and I had this kind of time-warpy feeling, as if I really was back home in Hawaii. The decor, the food choices, and the friendly staff all made it feel like home. Oh my, what to order? The choices all beckoned to me..."choose ME, Mokihana!" Eventually I chose from the Mixed Plate menu..kalua pig and teriyaki chicken, white rice, and pineapple coleslaw. My friends also ordered different things from the Mixed Plate menu. Our server, Mike, was super friendly and helpful. He was enthusiastic and treated us great. My teriyaki chicken was the best I've ever tasted, and kalua pig was perfection, and the coleslaw and rice were yummy, too. Oh. I did I mention malasadas?? Yes! Malasadas, in the middle of Bend. In the middle of Oregon's High Desert. Malasadas!! Fresh cooked (you have to wait 10-12 minutes for those) but the wait was wroth it. And when they came, hot and sugary, and I took my first bite, I was convinced I was really back home. Well, almost. They were fantastic! Two of my friends had never had them before, and they were hooked, too. (I love being a local food enabler!) The food was plentiful; no skimping here. I had enough left over to take to our retreat house. So did my friends. If there were 10 stars for my review, Aloha Cafe would get them. We loved this place so much that on our way home, we stopped here again 4 days later for lunch. This time I got the kalua pig and cabbage, and it was fabulous. Many thanks to Mike, Lee (our second-time server), Merv, Steve, Rian, Brandon, and Caleb. What a fantastic crew at a fantastic cafe. I just wish it weren't so far away! I live in Hawaii all my life so it made sense to come here for lunch or just to see how people interpret what Hawaii food is all about. I heard that the original owner was from Hawaii and sold this place to someone that lives here in Bend. Well it's nothing like the food back home in Hawaii. The place is clean, serve was quick, food just is not like food back home tho. My son hated his BBQ chicken he said just was way to sweet with the BBQ sauce on it. Solid Hawaiian food and exceptionally friendly staff! After returning from Crater Lake, we were craving that classic meat-and-two, and Aloha Cafe did not disappoint! In an effort to try something new, we ordered the lava chicken (grilled chicken cut into strips and tossed in a spicy sweet chili sauce) with a side of white rice and potato-mac salad ($8.45). The portions are good for one very hungry person or two mildly hungry adults. Of course it's not as good as what you'll find on the islands, but it will definitely quell your cravings. read more

I like Aloha Cafe very much. I have eaten there many times and will most likely go back there again in the future. My family normally gets the teriyaki chicken, which is nice non-breaded chicken with a somewhat thin, but good tasting sauce. Sides are reasonable portions. I would love to give them 5 Stars, but I can't. I order the Volcano Chicken when I go there. It is a breaded and fried chicken with a spicy garlic sauce. I crave this meal when I haven't had it for awhile. The problem: it is not consistent. The breading for the chicken is sometimes under done, sometimes there is not enough sauce to cover the pieces, and sometimes there is far too much sauce and everything is smothered. By far the worst part is the inconsistent cuts to the chicken. Sometimes it's all super large pieces, which makes for a bad chicken to breading to sauce ratio. All of the above I could overlook. What I can't overlook is giant pieces of chicken fat being left on the chicken, to the point where when you bite into a piece it's almost all fat. This doesn't happen every time I get this meal, but it's happened often enough that I feel it's worth deducting a point. This is just improper cleaning and cutting, and it detracts from an otherwise amazing meal and restaurant. I will continue to go there, but I don't like the fact I am rolling the dice on whether it's going to be great, good, or just okay. read more

Just finish trying to eat Da Big Kahuna. A lot of food and great sample of all their meets. This dish was big enough for 2 or one really hungry person. All the meats were amazing, but the ribs were next level. I have driven by this place a hundred times but didn't know what I was missing. This is the really deal and one of my new favorites. I have eaten at Aloha Cafe many times for 4 years and every time has been an awesome experience. The food is consistent, cheap, and so good! I ALWAYS get the Big Kahuna and split it with a friend or my wife. This plate is under $14 and FILLS 2 people up. It is a variety plate and has heaping portions! The sauces are all amazing, the potato mac is great (we always substitute more mac instead of coleslaw). The owner is very friendly and works often and if he isn't there, the staff is friendly and will take care of you just the same. My family is from Hawaii so I get a craving for Hawaiian food every once in awhile, and I was SO happy to find this place here in Bend. The service is friendly and warm, and the owner is so attentive. The food is authentic and believe me, that is something that is really difficult to find, in this little town. My BF and I have had the Lava Chicken, Teri Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Teri Beef, and the Loco Moco. I like all the chicken dishes the best - it's moist, perfectly grilled and I love that you can get the sauce on the side, so you can customize it to your liking. The Lava chicken is really not that spicy, it's more sweet/spicy, so give it a try! The teri sauce is pretty sweet but we like it that way. The BBQ sauce is thick and probably my least favorite of the three, but still good. I personally don't like the beef because it's very thin and well done, and I like my beef medium rare, but it's made just to my BF's taste and he loves it, it's his fave. The Loco Moco patties are made fresh and they know just how to make an egg over medium. You can also get the Loco Moco with fried rice, which is just a flavor explosion. The patties are cooked a little too much for me personally, because I prefer them a little softer, but that's just personal preference. The mix plate is very reasonably priced and you can get two or three meats and a side for under $10. Totally worth it! The sides are the best - the soy noodles and the mac salad are my favorite! I wish I could get a whole plate of the mac salad. It has just the right amount of mayo/potatoes. Sometimes they have too much mayo but this one is a little lighter, more Japanese-y, if you know what I'm talking about. I also love that you can get something other than rice. I love my noodles! I haven't tried the malasadas yet (they are a Portugese donut and they make them fresh here), but it's on my list! Since I go to Hawaii a lot, I do get malasadas at Leonard's and I know these won't compare, but seriously, I had to mention it because it's awesome that they even serve them - it's probably like the only place in Oregon to get a malasada. One other thing I love about this place, is that they always have a "charity soup" going on. You can get a bowl of their chili, or whatever soup of the day they have, and just put in a donation for the local charity (I think it was the Bend Fire Dept last time we were there), which is very cool, and I love that they give back. Cute cafe. Not large and at lunch time very busy! Order at the counter, they bring to the table. I got take out. Lava chicken wasn't very spicy and was excellent. Huge portion. Enough for 2 good sized meals. The Mac potato salad was only ok for me. Better than most but I prefer no potatoes, and maybe it had a little too much mayo-cream base to it. Daughter got the teri chicken and noodles. Large portions! Noodles were noodles. Chicken grilled to perfection with a very good Teri sauce. Will be back to try a few more items! read more

For a small hole in the wall Hawaiian bbq spot tucked away in a little shopping center, this place absolutely rules! My daughter and I split a 2 item large plate, teriyaki beef and teriyaki chicken, rice and potato mac salad. The teriyaki beef and chicken were both perfectly cooked, tender and delicious! The potato mac salad was right on. I don't normally compare mainland "Hawaiian" food to the island spots, but this place is the real thing snack in the middle of Oregon. First time I went in there, the guy taking my order was very friendly but the food was so-so. Second time I went in there, a different guy takes my order and was very friendly and the food was very satisfying (chicken katsu and volcano chicken). I think its the level of friendliness that makes this place stand out. They were kind, considerate, and very helpful. Little things like asking if you need anything else, or walking by to take used napkins off your table, and the simple gestures of aloha gives this place a well deserved 5. Hawaiian BBQ is generally hit and miss for me, and this place is most definitely a hit! The food selection is great, prices are decent, and service is punctual and extremely helpful! Keaton went above and beyond to make sure we had a good experience. The food like I said is well priced and decent sized. I ordered the lava chicken and the teriyaki beef both of which were tender, well seasoned, and not at all spicy, which was enjoyable. Noodles are noodles and rice is rice.
