I had a really great time at Alma Mexicana. We stopped by for their Alma Date Night Special which happens every Wednesday from 11am to 9pm. The space is nice with plenty of seating and a outdoor area that I'm sure is great when the weather is nice. The service was great as well. Our server made sure we had everything we needed and was very helpful with the menu. For $35 dollars the date night deal includes choriqueso, six street tacos of our choice, churritos and our choice of a bottle of wine or a margerita pitcher! You really can't beat that anywhere. The choriqueso was rally good and tasty. I had the guajillo chicken, fried chicken and the shrimp tacos. I absolutely loved the guajillo chick and shrimp taco and would definitely order them again. The churritos were also tasty but I couldn't eat a ton because I was full from all the other food. The food was plentiful and all for an amazing price. I honestly don't know why folks aren't here every single Wednesday. A wonderful deal with good food and drinks equal a good time. We went here on a friday hust before the storm hit and the service was so warm that it could melt away all the weather we have been having. The place was pretty quiet since we went durng odd hours but the ambience was very lively nonetheless, the music and the vibe was super chill and upbeat...i loved it. Came in on a Saturday afternoon around 2:00. It wasn't very busy. I sat on the patio to get some sun and people watching. I did the dip trio and the fish tacos. The guac needed more daily it tasted pretty bland, the cheese dip was decent, and the green salsa (asked for green instead of red) was delicious. The frozen drink of the day was delicious and very enjoyable on the patio. The fish tacos were decent but most of the flavor came from the sauce and the fish was perfectly crispy. Decent spot in a great location - room for improvement though. I came here on Frida with a few others to grab a drink and catch up after the F45 fitness friday workout in the coal pit. I had not been to this place yet and was excited to try it. I stuck to a liquid diet this time around - but I made it count with the margarita flight! Others in the group ordered nachos, a veggie bowl, and a modelo. My flight consisted of jalapeno, blood orange, and lavender. I liked the kick to the jalapeno. Stopped by Alma a few evenings ago and have to say we will definitely be back! We started with the choriqueso and the birria empanadas which were both really tasty. I preferred the empanadas a little more for the extra flavor and freshness. I ordered a blackberry margarita and classic margarita throughout the evening and both were phenomenal. For the main course I got the flautas. Came out pretty crispy and full of flavor. The rest of the fam enjoyed their food as well between the quesadillas and tacos everyone was happy. To end, we got the churritos which were little mini churros served hot with a dulce de leche dipping sauce and were the perfect end to the evening. The interior is a bit small and they have a great outdoor space. I was concerned that it would rain so we chose to sit under the covered space. The fans were going, but in July it was humid. Our waiter was impressive. He made sure we were taken care of and he has an amazing memory. There were a couple of times he could have come sooner, but it was a bit busy. I decided to order a margarita flight. I picked the Blueberry, Jalapeño and the Classic Alma. I enjoyed the blueberry. I wasn't too much of a fan of the Jalapeño. The classic Alama was ok. My friend wasn't fan of the pineapple margarita. Even though I wasn't a fan of one of the flavors, it allowed me to taste a variety. Next time, I will know which flavor to pick for a full size. The full size margaritas being served at other tables looked amazing. I ordered the Fajitas Texanas. It was presented well. I think it had the right proportion. I skipped the guacamole. There isn't a lot of lettuce, the veggies are fresh and the flour tortillas were good. The food was hot. I was bit surprised at the size of the shrimp (tiny), but paired with the steak and chicken it was delicious. The rice was so good. I'm not a black bean fan, but those were pretty good. I'll just start by saying my new favorite Tex-Mexican restaurant! I've seen this restaurant for years when going downtown and for some reason just never been, wow have I been missing out! We started our meal with the three amigos which is queso salsa and guacamole with chips, all 3 delicious! For my entree I got the el norteno tacos which are basically fried chicken tacos with a special cilantro ranch dressing. The chicken was sooo crispy and delicious! And to wash everything down we split a pitcher of the prickly pear margaritas. After telling our server how yummy the margaritas were he informed us that they make all of their flavors in house with no sour mix! I have been by here many times and finally came in to try it. There is a lot of patio seating, and while not good in the rain, after, it is not bad. The overall service at the place was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the guacamole which is very home-style and the shrimp was excellent as well along with the birria taco. The drinks are a bit more than I would want to pay so I stuck to water (free and no I'm not cheap, just know the value of a dollar). I have ponder eating here for a while now, somewhat turned off by the parking situation and the less than traditional Mexican fare that is offered here! But today I decided to say what the heck, lucked into a parking space that was very close to the restaurant, and was quickly inside this small spot! The interior is a mixture of attractive (lighting, ceiling, & bar area) and functionally ugly (seating, tables, stools)! As often is the case the music being played was just too loud, and the selections were just awful! I ordered a Modelo Especial ($6 - WOW), the Chuletas ($18 for 3 -WOW, WOW) and Patatas Bravadas ($9 - huge serving, small wow) as a side dish! The order was on the table in just under 20 minutes, and attractively plated. The Patatas are basically large chunk home fries with Salsa Rosa Aioli, and there was a great deal of them, as it should be for $9. I would only order this dish again if I was eating there and with at least a table of 3, over-wise you ended up taking home a large amount of potatoes that don't reheat well at all! The taste of the potatoes coated with the aioli was very good, and they were very well cooked to a nice outside crunch! The lamb chops were excellent, very lightly seasoned as cooked, nicely roasted to a bit of outside char! They were well complimented by the guacamole and tomato crema. The guac was chunky with a bit of finely chopped tomato, a touch of red onion, and a light heat level from peppers ( jalapeños I would surmise) - definitely a bit different, but still good! Overall this was an expensive meal composed of very good food quality! The guacamole, the tomato crema, and the aioli are spread out rather thinly on the plate, making for a rather messy gathering process if you are taking home some of the items - I would see about asking for these in separate containers on the side. My daughter moved to the area and was craving mexican food during our visit. I usually avoid it because it's hard to find authentic dishes. The place has outdoor seating where we enjoyed a cool evening. The tablecloths reminded me of my tía's kitchen. Our server was attentive and kept checking on us constantly. Cute little spot in downtown Winston Salem. Tons of patio space so great for parties and large groups. Overall the vibe is fun and makes you feel like you're on vacation. Great beer selection and lots of drinks to choose from. For food, we got the Three Amigos dip which comes with salsa, queso and guac. Everything was fresh and had a ton if flavor. The queso had peppers throughout and the Guac had lots of herbs, tomatoes, and onions. For entrees we got the pork tacos which had large chunks of pork, pineapple, queso fresco and avocados. Alma has changed to casual counter service - is it for for the better?? I think so. Alma Mexicana has never been very high on my list of places I like to go. I live within walking distance and the food is decent so I end up going quite a bit but I've always thought of it as overpriced and not as good as the porch. This last year (2022), Alma has done multiple rebrands, tried many different deals and hosted events to try to get customer in and just none have worked very well. They did a large rebrand over the Christmas break and are now a trying to be a fast casual spot with counter service, a totally customizable menu and now lower prices given that they are operating with less staff. I'm definitely a fan of the lower prices and the food quality hasn't gone way down!! There is a change in the vibe, making it feel very casual (not as much of a date spot), which is expected, but what Alma was known for - the margaritas, queso and chips - are still all very good. Food came out fast and hot. The food is tex mex and not heavily seasoned but it's tasty. The carne asada was particularly delicious, tender and lightly seasoned. I really enjoyed the pineapple pico. Now, the service on the Saturday night we went, wasn't very good. It changed to fast casual a couple of weeks ago and they aren't doing a good job of informing customers and helping them. I would have loved some information about the changes upon walking in but we had a weird exchange with the associate instead. You have to get your own utensils, napkins, waters, etc. and no one told us that. It just seems a little disjointed. It also wasn't as clean as it used to be - they need to get on top of bussing too. Good lunch spot in downtown Winston... you order at the counter which can create a little congestion during the lunch rush but they staff is super friendly and will help explain the menu. We tried the chips and salsa flight and all 3 options were pretty good. The salsa is very fresh tasting and not too spicy, the cheese dip is good but not my favorite (was a little grainy but not unusual), and the guacamole was good but a little spicy from the jalapeños. I ordered the two taco special with chicken. They were good, simple but good. The chicken was not overly seasoned but I did appreciate the traditional toppings (lettuce, cheese, and sour cream). After driving by Alma so much and noticing how busy it I always is, I finally got to go today for an early dinner. There's usually plenty of seating, both inside and outside, but it rained this afternoon so seating was limited. However, we arrived close to opening so there weren't many people. The location is right across from Innovation Quarter and is next to the park, but there's parking everywhere. Something I noticed was that the dining was all high-top inside, but overall it is a pretty restaurant. They have a great rotating tap menu of craft beers, as well as delicious-looking cocktails (I saw some of the pictures on their website, they're gorgeous!). They have a good pumpkin beer right now, which is from Voodoo Ranger, so I of course I had to have it because it's now the season. Food looked equally as good on their website and reading through the menu, which always makes it difficult to choose. The Tres Amigos is chips with salsa, queso, and guacamole, and it comes with big portions of all. The guac and salsa were very fresh, and the queso was different but I liked it. I wish I could've tried everything on the menu but I ended up with the flautas. Perfectly fried with a hefty chicken filling, there were eight pieces with rice, beans, tomatoes, and onions. Half were topped in a delicious crema with a slight kick, the others were topped with a deep mole. The service was great, the food was great, Alma was great. This was my second time visiting El Costeño and where do i begin the agua de pepino was really good and the presentation sold me the cup reminds me of my favorite childhood show!! The food was very good i had never ate ensalada de pulpo (octopus salad) and it was delicious. The tostada de ceviche was very good as well it was very fresh and clean and flavorful . I also ordered 2 different micheladas the tamarindo michelada i will say disappointed me the most the flavor was not at all what i was expecting it tasted kind of off and more bitter then expected !the pineapple michelada was a little better but could use some work it lacked the real pineapple taste and it needed that kick of chile. The cauliflower appetizer was delicious but some pieces were cold while others were hot. My blueberry spritzer was phenom & fresh. What bothered me the most is I ordered a main entree that was served with steak. My server never asked me how I wanted my steak cooked, but when the food runners ran the food to the table, they specified I ordered well done. I never order steak well done and I felt like the waiter forgot to ask me what I wanted and just put well done based on the stereotype that black people like well done steak. We were so hungry we just ate it, but a medium steak would have been so much better. The Callos de hancha nachos, scallops on four tortilla chips, with chimichurri on top, radish salad and blackberry pico de Gallo. Great looking dish, huge scallops, and interesting pico! Really good chimichurri. We took some home to go! The Chile de arbol enchiladas, labeled the spiciest dish! Spicy shredded chicken, cheese, roasted poblano peppers, with tomatillo salsa, comes with rice and beans and slices of avocado, really good, roasted poblano was really good, spicy but manageable. They're back! So I've been to Alma numerous times before the Rona hit us and I've always enjoyed their food and it's in a prime location. Situated across from Bailey Park on Patterson, there's indoor and outdoor dining. Sadly they closed during lockdown, but they're back! And I'm like a kid in a candy store! They've been holding pop ups on Thursday nights to train the new staff. So a friend & I decided to check it out. I gotta say, the staff is doing a good job. Our server Reece was great, he made sure we were good and before he left he let us know who our new server would be. Our next server Cali (or Kali? Sorry) was great as well. She was very attentive and she was the only one who knew about (my fave salsa) Salsa Mexicana! They had a limited menu but I'm sure they will open it up once they're officially open (Wednesday June 23rd). We ordered the La Pina & the El Beso for drinks. Neither one are really sweet and that's how we like it. We also ordered chips & salsa. I'm not a huge fan of their regular salsa so I ordered a side of their Alma Mexicana (it's a spicy orange dipping sauce NOT QUESO) I would honestly buy a jar of that salsa. My friend ordered the Las Carnitas. Mine had shredded chicken and hers had crispy pork. We were very happy with our tacos. The food is amazing! I've eaten here 3 times and the food has been consistently great each time. I dined in on my first visit and ordered the baja fish tacos and the chicken flautas. I saw someone else's review that said the flautas were a must order, so i did & have no regrets!!! I've order carry-out twice since then, chicken flautas both times, lol. The only reason why im giving this four stars is because the waiter on my first visit, i believe his name was Kyle, did not make a good impression. After ordering two entrees, because im a foodie, he proceeded to ask questions such as "you're going to eat all of that? All of that is for you? That's a lot of food. You sure you don't want to order one now and one to go? That's going to be enough food for today and tomorrow", etc etc. Like sir, it's 4pm & it's my first time eating today so please place my order & mind your business. So the same person who owns Alma Mexicana also owns The Porch in the West End. I love me some Tex Mex food at the Porch. BTW, the food here is different from what you get at The Porch. Quick Review - Food is decent. Other than the taco and enchilada dishes, I found myself having to spend time reading the description of the dishes to try and determine what the hell I was ordering. Great cocktail menu. In fact, I found it rather intimidating so I just ordered a margarita. Very good margarita by the way. They got draft beer on tap if you want to go that route. Decent draft beer selection. On to the food, I ended with with the Tres Salsas and Chips (Avocado Crema, Mimi's Queso and fresh salsa) as the appetizer. The Las Favoritas steak taco as the entree. The queso was good. Avocado creme was okay. Probably would have preferred a more traditional avocado dip. Not feeling the fresh salsa. Chips were homemade. You get three of the Las Favoritas tacos. No sides. The steak meat is like a pot roast. The blackberry pico de gallo paired well with the meat. Ask for extra napkins because these tacos can be messy to eat. Overall, thought the tacos were good. The location is great. Love the combination of indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant is right next to the old Bailey Power Plant and across the street from Bailey Park.
