We were busy running errands on Sunday and were looking for a new to us lunch spot in the area. We've seen Playa Azul many times when shopping at Lowes Foods so we decided to stop in. We arrived shortly after they opened and were greeted immediately and taken to a booth. The server provided us menus and took our drink orders. When we arrived there was only one other table seated. The menu is HUGE! Almost too huge for us, it was hard to make a decision. We also question if a restaurant with such a large menu can possibly offer fresh ingredients when the menu is SOOOO big. We did notice they offer lunch specials even on the weekend which is always appreciated. We were brought a basket of chips and salsa for the table. The chips were warm and the salsa was just they way I prefer it, not chunky. Honestly, we looked over the menu for probably 10 minutes before making our decisions. My wife decided on the La Ixtapa which features steak, chicken, shrimp and sausage. Served with tortillas and rice and beans which we requested double rice, no beans. I ordered the Chile Colorado, also double rice, no beans. While we were munching on our chips another set of customers arrived and were seated. Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked good. My wife's also came on a sizzling plate which she always enjoys. She decided to ask for a side of guacamole to enjoy with her protein and the young woman brought it quickly which she appreciated. My plate had the double rice, no beans but my wife's did not, it was the standard beans and rice but we opted not to bring it to their attention and just eat the rice. I enjoyed my meal but thought the sauce had way to much cinnamon spice. I recognize that some recipes call for cinnamon in Chile Colorado but I've never had such a strong cinnamon taste before and I've ordered Chile Colorado many times. Our server checked on us throughout and we felt adequately taken care of. Overall the experience was okay but we will continue to go to one of our other favorite spots when we are craving Mexican food.

    Pieces of completely charred Carnitas.

This small restaurant has a very crowded, confined feel to it, even when almost empty - sectioned off into 2 narrow areas separated by a divider, with booths against the walls, a narrow aisle, long tables across that aisle on each side. They are not the most punctual of folks, finally opening the doors at 10 after 11 - I had tried to eat here once before but gave up after more than10 minutes. It quickly became obvious that even after opening 10 minutes late, they were not ready for prime time. I had quickly ordered a Dos Equis LAGER. After 10 minutes or so I received some salsa and chips, and after a few more minutes the beer came, and it was an AMBER. I told the server that that I had ordered a LAGER. Another older gentleman (manager/owner?) walked by a that moment and said in a rather chippy manner that they didn't have the Lager. I simply said, that might have been important to mention when I ordered it! I chose to keep what was served rather than wait for a replacement - second big mistake, first was staying here. By the time my order (Carnitas Dinner, side of Pepino (Cucumber, chili powder, lime, and I added some salt and pepper) arrived I had discovered that my beer, yeap that wrong beer, was at best barely cool. I endeavored to preserve, so I began the meal. The cucumbers were very nice, refreshing. The refried beans were among the best I've tasted in this area, mostly mashed, but more than few whole ones. The salad and pico were also nice. The slices of avocado were old, very mushy, moved them aside, quickly. The centerpiece, the Carnitas, were of the shredded kind rather than cubed, as the authentic version usually calls for. It is hard to get the best outside crust with this approach. In addition, there were some pieces that were completely charred, could not be eaten. And the hits just keep on coming. Finally gave up the ghost, ask for the check, paid, stumbled out, embracing the real world. As for this place - no mas!

    California burrito

A very inexpensive and delicious Mexican restaurant I had gotten referred here by several non-Yelpers (come on Yelp peeps get the word out). So all the walls are a bright blue and the place is very colorful on top of that. We came with a small group and I ordered the California Burrito (which that name seems to be a trend here in NC). The steak was very tender and filled with rice and beans, topped with a cream sauce and avocados what could go wrong...NOTHING COULD...it was great. The chips and salsa for free are wonderful with some heat and since I like it hot the server brought out some of the homemade salsa which was like Mexican salsa had a baby with Asian Chili Sauce...not for the weak that is for sure. Great place and a great price, two people for less than $20...yep...it is good...!!!!

    Pizza Birria

Playa Azul has a massive menu that puts Cheesecake Factory to shame. This usually frightens me... wondering if they go days without selling the item I'm about to order. I decided to play it safe and go with Birria... but in taco form? Quesabirria? Or perhaps the Pizza Birria!!! I envisioned a round tortilla, layers of cheese, birria, tomatoes, jalapeños, onions and cilantro... a colorful round quesadilla topped with goodies to look like a pizza. But no, as you can see in my photo, it was served like a standard quesadilla but with white cheese sauce on top. I hate that white cheese sauce. But the birria was good... it just needed some brightness, like tomatoes, jalapeños, onions and cilantro on top. And leave it round... you know... like a pizza. I'll definitely be back... there got to be some gems on this massive menu... like 10 meat options for their street tacos. Maybe next time I'll try their Molcajete.

My husband and I have been here many times. Food never disappoints. Service is always friendly and fast. They also have great margaritas.

    Chips and Salsa

I went as soon as they opened hopeful for the best experience. Of course i was greeted and seated immediately. The service was friendly and on point. The chips were cold, the salsa bland and the rest of the meal was the same. The most unflavored Brria tacos even the con-some didn't help with the flavor. The most somewhat appetizing parts of the lunch was the guacamole. Even the shrimp quesadilla was meh....

    To-go order
    Laura R.

First time eating here and it was a to-go order. I was impressed with the variety of options they had, not just traditional American-Mexican options like you see at La Caretta and Mi Pueblo. I went with the Tacos de Birria which came with a consommé and a side of rice and beans. I also ordered chips and guacamole, plus churros, since I was craving something sweet. I've never had birria before so I don't have anything to compare it to. And with it being a to-go order any item can sometimes end up soggy by the time you eat it. Unfortunately I think that was the case with mine. As far as flavor goes, it was pretty good. Not too spicy! Based on photos I've seen of this same item it appears it has the potential to be more crispy in regards to the shell, which I think I would enjoy more. The consommé was great to dip the tacos in though. Guacamole was ok. Was expecting a bigger portion for the amount I paid and a little too much onion in my opinion. I prefer guacamole that is more creamy vs. chunky. Churros was a pleasant treat but again, soggy by the time I got to eat them. Overall I think this restaurant has potential, and based on other reviews I think it's worth trying, especially if it's to dine-in.

I also tried the shrimp and scallops dish served in a pineapple, which was flavorful and fun in presentation, though I did feel the pricing leaned a bit high for what you receive. I'd return for the margaritas and the vibe, just with the expectation that it's more of a splurge than an everyday stop.

Chips and salsa are a staple of any good Mexican restaurant, and here the chips are served warm and the salsa ever so slightly spicy. We also ordered cheese dip which did not disappoint.
