They could have easily moved a table of patrons into one of the available booths (or nearby table) to accommodate us... but for some reason they made us wait 20+ minutes while other patrons that came in groups of 2 and 4 got to immediately sit down... at times the groups of 2 sat down in tables of 4. Not very efficient!!! I'm sure if you nicely asked patrons to move to a booth from a table, they'd take that one, especially with some TLC and incentives. The Long Version: When I travel, I like to eat where the locals eat. I love those places that cater to the office workers and are only open Mondays through Fridays and are closed in the evenings. The catch is since I no longer live in Montreal, when I'm in Montreal, it's usually on the weekends. However, recently my husband and I were in Montreal on a Monday and Tuesday and we had lunch at Cafe du Parquet. The restaurant is in the CDP Capital Centre (it has since been renamed the Jacques-Parizeau Building, but people who lived somewhere and then left will understand how I forever call things the name they were when I was living there (#SkydomeForever, but that's another story for another time, lol)). Their menu changes daily and apparently on Fridays they have Filet Mignon for under $25. We arrived at 11am and their lunch options weren't quite ready yet, so we walked around Old Montreal a bit and returned at 11:30am. By the time we left a little after noon there was a huge lineup. I got the Salmon ($15.50) and my husband got the General Tao Chicken ($14.50). So the way it works is you order your hot dish from the staff serving it. You tell them whether it's to eat in (will be served on a ceramic plate) or to-go (will be served in a takeout box). For each hot dish, you get 2 sides from the hot table and these you serve yourself. If you're eating in you pay at the cashier at the back (the area that leads to the dine-in seating). If you're taking out, you pay at the cashier at the front, near the entrance/exit to the cafe. If you're eating in, after you're done you put your own tray away in the designated slots in the wall. For my sides, I got Brussels sprouts and vegetables (bell peppers, zucchini, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli). My husband got rice and vegetables. I love that they have free self-serve water. They even have branded glasses. My salmon was delicious. It was perfectly cooked and was a generous portion. The side were also tasty, although a bit heavy on the oil. My husband enjoyed his meal. I tasted some of his General Tao Chicken and while it had zero spiciness, it had a sweet and tangy flavour and was crispy on the outside. The batter wasn't too excessive and the meat was not gristley. I would get this dish for myself. The rice was unremarkable. Service was a bit surly, lol. But food was delicious and prices reasonable, so that's ok. Maybe they were having a bad day. I would love to return to try other items, particularly their Filet Mignon on Fridays. There's is 2 side at this cafe. There is the cafe with fixed offering, a bit like a convenience store that also sell pizza and such. But there's the lunch and dining area that open at 11h30. This have a different offering each days of the week. I always goes on the Friday, which is filet mignon days! But there's also parmigiana chicken, salmon and another one I forgot. You can take it with full fries, fries and 1 choice or 2 choices from the salade bar behind and soup. The salad bar is 2 table with many different offering like pasta salad, Cesar salad, chickpeas, etc. It costed me 21$ including taxes for the filet mignon, fries, salad and a beer (there's a glass of beer/wine included!). And it's very good. So come early, at 11h45, the line is already getting long and by 12h00, you wait at least 20 minutes in line. It's not because they don't go fast enough but since all steak are cooked on ordering like you want it from blue to well done, it take a minute to cook.

In this semi-ghostly part of town, I consider myself lucky already to have been offered almond milk, so I'm not inclined to be too judgmental about the beans, which were very okay. The staff, which I assume was composed that day of the bistro's two co-owners, was courteous and efficient. They seemed very focused on their work whenever they were not chatting with a customer, awaiting future orders.
