When we met, Vanessa listened carefully, asked questions, and identified a gorgeous blue-green for the body of the house, and a rich creamy white for our trim. We retrieved samples of the paint from the store, put it up on a few different places on the house and garage, and SURPRISE... the blue-green color came out a lot brighter than it appeared on the flat paper sample. We sent Vanessa an email and asked for her recommendation. Vanessa wrote right back and provided three new options, one of which was the absolutely PERFECT shade of the seemingly ever-elusive teal we had been dreaming about. We are thrilled with the outcome -- our house is stunning from every angle and a true jewel of the neighborhood! Without Vanessa's expert assistance, we could have purchased 100 paint samples and still not have found the right shade.

She took our original scheme (which I put together using the Farrow & Ball website's 'these go together' suggestions) as inspiration, keeping our selected main color (F&B Brinjal), and replacing the ho-hum F&B trim colors with amazing, earthy, sophisticated ones. Then! She shocked and delighted us by proposing GOLD for our rafter tails and bits of trim. She spent a ton of time with us during the consultation, figuring out which color should go where on all the complicated joins at the back of the house. We splashed out for renderings, which was absolutely worth the extra cost--they built our confidence about making such a huge change. (Our fabulous painters -- Jeff and Alex of G&F Painting-- also appreciated the renderings and how prepared we were, btw.) The weekend before painting began, with all the final samples on the side of the house, I noticed that in the morning sun, something was off with our choices. Vanessa kindly made time for a weekend emergency visit and helped us figure out that the main sample was mixed (very) wrong, but the color selections were right. Whew! The end result is beautiful. We get tons of compliments from neighbors and passing dog walkers, and best of all... where before the white box loomed like a lonely cloud, now our home feels so much more cozy and "settled" into the landscape and neighborhood. Don't hesitate to call Vanessa - she made this daunting project fun! Worth every penny.

Two years ago today Bree and Tim Watt, REcreateNW, finished our kitchen remodel, just in time for…read moreThanksgiving. Our journey with them had begun in September, when my sister brought Bree to our house to talk things over - to imagine what could happen, and prioritize our dreams. She then talked it over with Tim, and they gave us a price quote that included our whole list, and was $10k-25k less than our previous quotes! There are so many choices involved with remodeling! Flooring, cabinets (and cabinet handles!), tiles, backsplash, lights, colors, and on and on. I am not a person who knows how to choose these things, and it never occurred to me that they should match in some way. All that I knew was that I wanted as much light as possible, and that I needed extra counter space. Bree took it from there, presenting choices that reflected that she had listened to everything I had told her. She made the process easy and fun! Meanwhile, Tim was designing our space to fit our needs (so much better than our previous set-up.) He was contacting the subcontractors: he's the one who waited for them when they were late, and interacted with them to help them accomplish the remodel. This was so much less frustrating for us. We were impressed with all of these guys - friendly folks who did quality work. And Tim and Bree continued to ask our preferences and opinions. As the project was nearing completion it became clear that they were coming in under budget! With the extra money, we were able to add some lighting to our living room, and to have the living room painted at the same time as the kitchen! Pretty exciting! As a finale, they hosted an open house, so that we could show off our Thanksgiving kitchen to our friends and family. In the two years since then, they have stayed in touch and have become our good friends.

She was dismissive of our thoughts/preferences and responded defensively when we asked for other options throughout the entire process. I didn't want to break our contract, since we'd paid her design fee upfront. At the end of our project, she sent us a final invoice showing she had gone 15-20% over budget, without our approval. Then, when I requested receipts, she refused to provide them. This was an extremely disappointing and tumultuous experience. We're now redoing the room ourselves, and reporting her to BBB for dishonest business practices.

However, we assumed that Stephanie would provide us with an overview of the process with timelines and what to expect in order to work with our move-in goals. She never provided any sense of targets or timelines, which left us unsure how things worked, when we were supposed to reach out to her, and when we should expect to receive mock ups of designs/options. There was overall really poor communication and we tried to address this. Eventually, at some point, she decided that we were not a good fit as client and designer and even mentioned she had a feeling this would not work the moment she stepped into our home originally. In that case, we wish she would have told us that earlier instead of bringing us on somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster. We later got some very harsh and cold emails from Kami accusing us of sending bad checks, when in reality, our materials had gotten mixed up as we were moving, and would have been able to rectify things if they had communicated properly with us when we first sent over the payments. Honestly, just looking at the way she responds to comments on Yelp (in addition to her communication over email) shows how she lacks professionalism and basic empathy. Perhaps, we just had a bad experience, but I'm honestly not sure if this is a super friendly business for people of color, particularly with a desire to integrate some of their cultural elements into the design, or for people new to the interior design process.
