For the past five years, we have been loyal customers of Cal's, spending literally thousands of…read moredollars on repairs and service. During that time, we came to regard Cal's as generally efficient, although consistently and noticeably overpriced. We continued doing business there anyway because we believed we were paying a premium for something far more important than a bargain: competence, honesty, and trust. That trust has now been completely shattered. Recently, my vehicle began overheating. We took it to Cal's expecting the same professional expertise we had relied upon for years. After examining the vehicle, we were told that the engine's gaskets were damaged and that the necessary repairs would cost approximately $5,000. Five. Thousand. Dollars. Before committing to such an enormous expense, we wisely sought a second opinion. Another repair shop examined the same vehicle and reached a dramatically different conclusion. They determined that the cooling system simply needed to be properly bled and the antifreeze refreshed. Their total charge? $85.00. The vehicle now runs perfectly. Think about the magnitude of that difference: $5,000 versus $85. One diagnosis suggested catastrophic engine damage requiring thousands of dollars in repairs. The other identified a relatively routine cooling-system issue and corrected it for less than one hundred dollars. That is not a minor difference of professional opinion. That is a staggering discrepancy of nearly $4,915. Had we simply accepted Cal's diagnosis without question, we could have spent approximately $5,000 attempting to correct a problem that another competent mechanic resolved for $85. What makes this particularly disturbing is our history with this business. We were not strangers walking through the door for the first time. We were five-year customers who had entrusted Cal's with our vehicles and spent thousands of dollars there. Loyalty like that should mean something. At the absolute minimum, it should be met with careful diagnosis, transparency, accuracy, and respect for the customer's hard-earned money. Automobile repair depends enormously upon trust because most customers do not possess the technical expertise necessary to independently verify what they are being told. When a mechanic says an engine requires thousands of dollars in repairs, the customer must be able to believe that recommendation is accurate and necessary. Once that trust is broken, the relationship is over. We gave Cal's five years of our business and thousands of our dollars. Unfortunately, this experience has erased the confidence that kept us returning. We will not spend another penny with Cal's. And I strongly encourage anyone receiving an extraordinarily expensive diagnosis from this establishment--or frankly, from any automotive repair facility--to GET A SECOND OPINION BEFORE AUTHORIZING THE WORK. In our case, that second opinion was worth approximately $4,915. Do not trust your car in the hands of Cal's Auto. PERIOD

Very opportunistic…read more I took my car in to be serviced. I told him what the dealer had informed me and he said he would do a diagnostic. He NEVER actually did a diagnostic and just fixed what I told him they said was wrong with the car. He says that he'll fix it but he doesn't know if it'll stop the engine noise. I was told that the diagnostic would gather the information needed to make a sound decision about the repair. It was a ripoff and I'll be reporting this business to everyone that I possibly can report it to. He should have never fixed my vehicle when he knew that my car still would not function properly after the repair. He's fixed an oil leak and still charged me $90 for an oil change as if he wasn't going to have to put oil back in the vehicle after the repair. He's suppose to be mechanic and be thorough. He took advantage and then got upset when I told him that the credit card charges are too much because he's going to write those off on his taxes. DO Not patronize this business if you want someone who's honest and ethical. He also never called me back after I called with concerns about all of this!
