This review is solely for the "Scent Work" course conducted by Sarah Christiano. (She may also use the name Sarah Cowell).
(I have used the Boarding & Day Boarding, and have been pleased with those services. I have also participated in an "Obedience" Class, and been satisfied with that class.)
"Scent Work" Class: Be ready for your dog to spend 75% of class time in a kennel, while you both watch other classmates and their dogs have their practice time.
If you don't mind choices you make for your own dog being judged by Sarah, and you don't have any other unusual things come up, i.e. schedule conflicts or changes, etc... you might otherwise have a good experience.
1. My dog was on special nutrition, and as such I had to be selective about what treats I was using during the class. This did not go over well with Sarah, and despite me being a veterinarian myself, my choices about medical diagnoses and management was constantly questioned by Sarah, as if she herself knew better. With very little, if any, respect for my education and experience.
2. They apparently DO have a generous makeup policy, in that if you miss a class, you can make it up. It just so happened, I had several initially unplanned events come up, and I was happy that I could reschedule.
3. One of the dates I missed, interestingly enough, was Easter Sunday. Yes, there was class on Easter Sunday. When I asked Sarah about that, if it was perhaps a mistake, she said in her experience most people travel the week before Easter, and most classmates preferred to have class on Easter Sunday. Buyer beware of holiday schedules, as Sarah seems to operate on a schedule of her own.
4. They allow you to split the class payment into two installments. Which I did. Which they lost track of. Both times. Both times I supplied my check number, the amount of the check, and the date they cashed the checks.
5. These are the words of Sarah Christiano to me: "So despite your leading me on that you had paid for all 8 weeks you did not."
"Is this how you normally conduct business ? Very disappointing & unprofessional. Like I said, never had a client make a commitment to an 8 week class & then not come to class AND try not to pay for half of it." Even though I corrected her, and reminded her of the payments, I have yet to receive any apology from Sarah.
6. Wow. And, I did inform the manager of Allen's Kennels, but she did not seem to want to get involved, or was little help in dealing with this situation. So, in the end, since I elected not to continue class with Sarah, I did end up losing money.
7. If I receive an apology, or a credit towards another service, I will be glad to post again and let you know.
UPDATE as of Aug 2018: For dog daycare, you must make an appointment for dropping off. When I did not show up at the scheduled time, Jennifer actually called me at 8:15 am to yell at me for five minutes about how she could have left, and she wouldn't have had to wait there, and how she only gets paid for checking dogs in, and that she wasted her time. I felt so bad for her that I personally delivered $20 to compensate her for her time. I hope that she gets some manners. Or a new job. Or both.
I have no idea why there are not regularly scheduled kennel staff at work at 8:15 am taking care of the boarding pets.
This is now the third person at Allen's that I've been exposed to that seems to have a lack of customer service skills. I think I've seen enough. read more
