Now that I have visited the office several times, I feel like I can provide an informed review…read more I've had an initial screening with x-rays, a cleaning with root planing and scaling (if you just shivered a little, that was the correct reaction), filled a cavity and replaced an old filling, and got fitted for a night guard. I am not a great patient; I have anxiety about visiting the dentist. It isn't irrational - I got this way after a lifetime of experiences that don't need to be recounted here. Just wanted to say I'm not crazy, I'm just a little broken. Because of this, I don't go to the dentist very often. I take really good care of my teeth and gums and hope for the best. I knew that I had a filling that needed to be replaced, though, so I've been on the lookout for a provider. I had one, but they kept saying I had a phobia and I know this might be a small thing, and maybe for me it was simply an excuse to not go, but I don't have a phobia. I have anxiety. There's a huge difference. Anyway. The office is on Sandy, in a beautiful blue house with big windows and a sign that says, "new patients welcome". I drive by it all the time, so I had many chances to be reminded and think about it. It took a year or two, but I finally called and made an appointment. They fit me right in for an intake. Great covid precautions in place, not too many patients in there at one time. It's a small practice, so you're going to see the same handful of people every time. For me, that is essential. Trust - it's a real thing and its hard to build when the office has a huge staff. The first appointment was fine, I knew there would be some poking but no heavy machinery. Every time the doctor said my gum gap was more than a 3 I died a little on the inside because I knew it meant some intervention was coming my way. Sure enough - gotta get those gum pockets cleaned out, fill a cavity, replace that filling (the one I could see was deteriorating and I don't know - I hoped would magically get better while I slept?), and get a night guard before I ground my teeth down to smooth stones. Everyone was so nice, explained things in detail, and made sure I understood the plan. I left dreading the next appointment, honestly, but at least I felt like I could make it through. The two appointments for the root planing and scaling also went very well. I'm a red head and studies have shown that we are extra in many ways, the pertinent one being that we need more anesthetic when getting procedures. I had several shots, which in themselves were unpleasant. The cleaning, though, once I was numb, wasn't too bad. I really enjoyed the conversation (my half of it was mumbled) and the time went by fast. Today I had the cavity filled and the other filling replaced and I was a MESS. Just a mess. Shaking, crying, having a really hard time keeping it together. And it was all me, there was nothing happening to make me upset or uncomfortable except for the wild ride going on inside my mind. I hate being this way, and I'm working on it. But it's hard. Dr. Agee and the assistants, and the receptionist, and even the dog know that I'm struggling and they make it as easy as they can. They wait, and they give me space and tissues, and a towel to squeeze. They tell me I can stop them any time I need to, and I did. Then, when it was time to get back in there, Dr. Agee fired up that drill and took care of it like he was working on a formula car in a race pit. The part I really had a hard time with went by in a blink, and I am so grateful for that. The nightguard fitting was so easy to do it doesn't even need to be talked about. Let me wrap up this long review by saying that they are stuck with me now. I know them, I trust them, I will come back (regularly, not just every couple of years). Dr. Mori is efficient and thorough, with none of the guilt trips that I remember from childhood dentist visits. Everyone in the office is pleasant, and the seats have a great view of the inner East side from the 4th floor. The best part of this office, though, is Saara at the front desk. She goes out of her way to explain fees before each appointment, and is very knowledgeable and accurate about what will be covered by my insurance. I was a little apprehensive about coming in today since I was eager to get my teeth cleaned but as a new patient, I would need to have x-rays and a comprehensive exam performed (was told to expect 1.5-2 hours for this) and then would be scheduled for another date to come back and get my teeth cleaned. When I walked in, Jacee (sp?) was friendly and approachable. She had a smile on her face and seemed genuinely glad to see me. I had an experience for the past 5 years at our previous dentist where the front desk gal was less-than-friendly (actually kind of cranky) but I dealt with it thinking maybe something I did caused her behavior and their clinic was close to my house. So, this experience with Jacee got me off on the right foot immediately! She took the paperwork I completed ahead of time (available on their website so you can save the time and come in prepared) and verified that everything with my insurance had been confirmed so she didn't need a copy of my ID card. The doctor actually came to the waiting room to greet me and bring me back. She offered me a seat, introduced me to the hygienist who would be assisting her, and honestly, she was so warm and welcoming that it made me feel at ease instantly. (PS - I saw pictures in the waiting room that indicated she had been on a mission trip to Guatemala)... I asked about the mission and she confirmed those indeed were photos from a humanitarian trip and that she'd been on two others, one as recently as last fall and she was anxious to put those pictures up too. I like that she is community-minded (internationally-minded) and that she could influence others to think of others and ways they can give back. Before she brought me back, she had taken the time to review my dental and medical history that I'd completed and asked me some qualifying questions about my comfort level while getting dental work done, my dental history, and about myself. Nothing intrusive and frankly, felt like a chit-chat session of getting to know you. In my opinion, all good stuff. She discussed what was going to happen during the appointment, why they like to give the new patient exam in a different appointment than the teeth cleaning, and that due to some last-minute staffing snafus (two folks called in sick - of which she apologized for as I was told it's a very rare thing) and my non-complicated dental history, I'd be able to get my teeth cleaned afterall. Let me say that I was VERY HAPPY to hear that!!! I had full films of my upper and lower teeth (18 in all). Ana the hygienist was very friendly too. She took the time to explain everything, she hustled back and forth between each x-ray, and took gumline measurements (after showing me a video first of what she was going to do, why it was important, and how that helped to establish a baseline of my dental care with them). She showed me things on the x-rays of what she was seeing but then made sure to tell me that the doctor would discuss things in further depth. We chatted about our families and you could tell that she was very happy in her role at the practice. By the way, during the actual cleaning, not only did Ana use the typical manual tools to clean my teeth, she then followed it up with a sonic, vibrating tool to do a second sweep of my mouth. I have never had this type of cleaning before - pretty cool! She reviewed good flossing techniques as well. I could go on-and-on but I realize that this review has become rather lengthy. Ultimately, I'm thrilled that we've chosen Dr. Welicky for our new dentist and HIGHLY RECOMMEND her and her staff. Oh and by the way, the little goodies they sent me home with (not just toothbrush, etc, but a cool water mug stuffed with a business-printed pen, lip balm, mints) was something totally unexpected by very much appreciated. Also, the other little tcotchkes they sent me home made me feel better than the kid who gets to pick something from the goody/toy basket. :D

Somewhere between very unprofessional and seriously sketchy…read more I just moved to this neighborhood, and I wanted a dentist that was nearby. Rose City Smiles is two blocks from my house, and it seemed highly rated, so I called to schedule an appointment. I wasn't able to get through, so after several attempts to catch them by phone I just left my phone number and asked them to call me, which they eventually did. I thought "Wow, they must be really busy! That's a good sign!" They were really interested in my insurance info -- like REALLY interested -- but they didn't seem all that interested in what was bringing me in for a visit. My employer just changed dental insurance providers, so I had to do some sleuthing to get all the policy info they wanted, but I got it. I tried calling them to give them the information they had asked for and, AGAIN, I couldn't get a real person on the phone. I don't like leaving things like dental plan information in a recording, so I decided I'd walk over to give it to them in person since it's only two blocks away. As it happens, on two separate days, in the middle of the day, in the middle of their alleged hours of operation, there was nobody there. The building itself looked deserted and questionably maintained, the parking lot was empty, and the door was locked. Does that seem weird to you? It did to me. The glaring disconnect between that reality and the string of improbably glowing reviews reinforced my sense that there's something dodgy/sketchy/weird about this place. THEN -- and this was the last straw for me -- they texted me LESS THAN 24 hours before my appointment to cancel, claiming that the receptionist had had her wisdom teeth out. Yeah, well, fine, it's not the receptionist I really need to see; it's the dentist -- the dentist who never seems to be in the office. In any case, the combination of never being able to get anyone by phone, the deserted/abandoned appearance of their office, and having my appointment canceled LESS THAN 24 hours before I was supposed to go in (after I had taken time off work to go) has left a VERY bad taste in my mouth. This place seems like anything but a thriving practice, and I'll be going elsewhere for my dental care.
