I toured and trained at numerous gyms in Kalamazoo before committing to West Hills in June 2019. I have absolutely NO REGRETS!!! Although I was skeptical/hesitant on the $50/month membership (used to paying around $30/month), it is money well spent. Unlike the other athletic clubs I was a member of, West Hills is above the rest in terms of: 1) Equipment is new, clean, maintained and above all, the free weights are organized and you never see any on the floor! 2) The trainers are always friendly and willing to help...even if you are not one of their clients. They will even help you when they are there on their personal days off. 3) Overall, the entire facility (locker rooms, showers, common areas) are well maintained. 4) I have yet to see one of the front desk staff playing on their cell phones. They greet all patrons. 5) Maybe it is due to the higher monthly membership fee, but the other gym members are civilized, respectful, polite, and responsible. Granted, it is a slightly older crowd, but some of them put the college kids to shame. I am not being paid by West Hills to write this review and I normally don't post Yelp reviews (maybe 4 in the past 3 years), but when you are passionate about an activity such as fitness and you have a place like West Hills to fulfill that need, you cannot help but tell everyone you know how great it is!!

The gym is clean, well-equipped, and even provides gear if you don't have your own. With a variety of classes in BJJ, MMA, and more, this gym is an excellent place for both beginners and advanced fighters looking to grow. Highly recommend!

I didn't know any of the poses or positions either. But the way the classes went, I didn't need too really. The teacher explained everything very well, it wasn't fast paced so I could copy the moves, and they even went around checking and fixing our stances. Before KAT, I didn't know what to do in a gym and often stuck with running on a treadmill. At KAT, they make personalized programs tailored to your individual fitness goals and abilities. I've learned and done tons of exercises with barbells, dumbbells, bands, bodyweight, etc. that work all the different muscles in the body. All of the trainers are exceptionally knowledgeable. They teach you the exercises and make sure you have the proper form and prevent injuries. They also push you when they know you can do more. And they're incredibly friendly, which makes working out a lot more fun. Over time, my fitness abilities have improved immensely. KAT's more personalized than traditional group fitness classes or open gyms, but not as expensive or intimidating as personal training. There's a maximum of 4 people per session, and it's very motivating and fun seeing other people also working towards their individual fitness goals. At the end of every session, we do a "burn out" together where we do several exercises together and it's a lot of fun. You truly feel like a part of a family/community with the other clients working out and the trainers. I can't recommend KAT enough!

I had a membership here for a while when I lived downtown. While the gym itself is on the smaller…read moreside, the pool is a very nice size for laps and is kept at a good temperature for lap swimming (it really is the Goldilocks just-right, where I find most pools either way too hot or too cold). I always loved standing underneath the waterfall and having the weight of the water get a little shiatsu massage my shoulders and head, and the massage jets in the hot tub also do a number on aching muscles (although all the jets are positioned in exactly the same spot so it's hard to massage anything other than your exact mid) back. The locker rooms are lovely as well (it's an especially nice touch to have a swimsuit dryer so you don't have to carry a drippy suit back to your room or house), and it's always nice to treat yourself to a sauna after your workout. It doesn't take long for the sauna to heat up, and I recommend turning it on before you swim so that it's hot and ready afterwards. The pipes in the shower area could use a major overhaul though. It sounds like a massive road construction project is going on right above your head when you're in the shower. Also, there is zero suds factor on the shampoo in the dispensers and even after rewashing several times and using tons of pumps of the stuff my hair didn't feel clean afterwards. I was staying at the hotel this week for a conference -- when I went back to the pool on day three In brought my own shampoo with me.
