The main issue I've had is unsanitary behavior.in the men's locker room. Despite all the signs about washing before getting in the hot tub or cold plunge and wearing proper swim attire, guys (particularly under 25 yo crowd) will routinely use the sauna or steam room, and then hop right in the hot tub or cold plunge with nothing but underwear. Even worse, they throw their underwear in the swim suit water extractor. The locker rooms often smell like sewage. I've even been swimming laps only to see a bunch of high school or early college aged males jumping in the pool with only underwear... there were little kids at the pool! I spoke up that time, and they actually were surprised saying they had done it multiple times. Staff has been informed but does not enforce. The response I've received is, "it's above my pay grade." Upper level management and female staff seem to care more about this, but nothing has been done that actually fixes the issue. Apart from this it would be a 4/5 rating overall.

I attended the downtown Grand Rapids location before moving to the Portage area and although this place doesn't have all the bells and whistles like downtown it is well run, clean and very practical in many ways including the indoor racquetball court, in and outdoor tennis courts, indoor basketball courts, pool, track, kid-care and while it does not have the latest equipment it is all in very good shape and has more than what is needed. All in all I give this place 5 stars because as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't judge a book by it cover. Compared to other non-Planet Fitnesses I have been to this is cleaner, smells better, has better ways to watch TV's, and has more equipment. I do wish at times the music wasn't as loud but when it gets really busy, with the bustle of all the people and machines, it makes sense way it is that way. When it does get that busy, I still find a way to use the machines I need, though I have seen the floor mats run out and customers having to sit on the hard floor. One annoyance with this location has nothing to do with the staff or the space but is with the customers themselves. Usually when it is rather busy, the men who use heavy weights sometimes drop them hard which triggers the employees to use the lug alarm. At times it seems like the men start doing it on purpose and laugh when the alarm goes off like a little game. This play is really annoying and only something I have experienced in Kalamazoo. I think this is a good place to work out. If you can avoid the rush hour when everyone gets out of work you will have a more pleasant experience.

I toured and trained at numerous gyms in Kalamazoo before committing to West Hills in June 2019. I have absolutely NO REGRETS!!! Although I was skeptical/hesitant on the $50/month membership (used to paying around $30/month), it is money well spent. Unlike the other athletic clubs I was a member of, West Hills is above the rest in terms of: 1) Equipment is new, clean, maintained and above all, the free weights are organized and you never see any on the floor! 2) The trainers are always friendly and willing to help...even if you are not one of their clients. They will even help you when they are there on their personal days off. 3) Overall, the entire facility (locker rooms, showers, common areas) are well maintained. 4) I have yet to see one of the front desk staff playing on their cell phones. They greet all patrons. 5) Maybe it is due to the higher monthly membership fee, but the other gym members are civilized, respectful, polite, and responsible. Granted, it is a slightly older crowd, but some of them put the college kids to shame. I am not being paid by West Hills to write this review and I normally don't post Yelp reviews (maybe 4 in the past 3 years), but when you are passionate about an activity such as fitness and you have a place like West Hills to fulfill that need, you cannot help but tell everyone you know how great it is!!
