I hired Alex (the owner/operator of All Star Screens) to install a more expensive and longer lasting polyester screen for my pool enclosure. However, without my knowledge he installed a cheaper fiberglass screen that's expected to have roughly 42% the life expectancy of the polyester screen. I believe Alex lied to me and took advantage of me to increase his profit on the job. I believe he intentionally left the smaller details of the job (door hardware, cables, etc.) undone because he wanted to get to the next job and thought I wouldn't force the issue. Regardless of intent, I was left paying more for less. Ultimately if you hire All Star Screens, you need to watch Alex like a hawk and you need to be willing to engage in conflict to force him to do the things he's promised to do. For the details of what happened keep reading... I explicitly and clearly told Alex that it was very important to me that the screen be polyester, not fiberglass. He verbally agreed to install a polyester no-see-um screen made by Super Screen and wrote "No See Ums $4,817.15 (Super Screen)" in the contract. The only reason I learned that Alex actually installed a cheaper, less durable screen is because he left behind the "Phifer 20x20 Fiberglass Screen" packaging. It isn't ideal that Alex would promise to install a Super Screen product and then install a Phifer product without telling me, but using fiberglass instead of polyester is the real problem. Polyester is superior to fiberglass in several ways, but most notably polyester is said to last 20+ years (https://screenporch.com/screen-material) compared to the 7-10 years fiberglass lasts (https://flscreens.com/screen-materials-all-the-choices-and-what-to-avoid/). I essentially received a product that has roughly 42% the lifespan of the product I paid for. To make this right in my eyes, Alex needed to either replace the fiberglass screen with a polyester screen or he needed to refund me at least 58% to account for the fact that a fiberglass screen may only last 42% as long as a polyester screen. I immediately contacted Alex, sent him a picture of the packaging he left on my curb, and told him I'd like a refund because he didn't meet the terms of the contract. Alex began by trying to gaslight me by incorrectly telling me the screen is "as strong as can be" and that he installed Phifer's "Tough Screen [which] is fully polyester". The conversation felt hostile/argumentative and after spending about 50 minutes repeatedly asking Alex to make things right, the best he would offer is a 10 year warranty and a 30% refund. Unfortunately, the 30% refund doesn't compensate me for missing out on the additional 58% lifespan I would have gotten from a polyester screen. Additionally, the 10 year warranty doesn't come close to the 20+ years polyester is expected to last (not to mention I can't trust Alex to do what he says he will). As a result, I consider his offer to be better than nothing, but insufficient. I also had two smaller issues with Alex. He verbally told me and wrote in the contract that he'd "tighten all cables" and replace "2 door hardware". He requested payment when he finished, but there were 3 loose cables, none of the hardware on the doors were replaced, and one door wouldn't even close on its own. Alex gave pushback, incorrectly claiming that he already fixed the doors and that it was impossible to tighten the cables due to rust. At that moment I hadn't yet discovered that he took advantage of me by installing a less durable screen and the conversation was unpleasant enough that I simply wanted him gone so I paid him and planned to finish doing the work myself. However, when I later found out that he secretly installed the less durable screen, I put more pressure on him to actually tighten the cables and replace the hardware on both doors. He came back and tightened/replaced only two of the three loose cables, installed two door sweeps, and installed two door springs/cylinders. He didn't replace the door handles/latches on either door and one of the doors still wouldn't close. So his follow up work still failed to meet what was promised in the contract and it is unclear when/if he plans to address that. read more
