Dinner service - ANA Flight 9 (JFK-NRT 09/03/2015).
Justin S.

ANA deserves its five-star reputation. My sister and I found a great fare to Ho Chi Minh City on ANA and recently flew JFK-NRT-SGN and we had a great experience. For starters, ANA is kind of Japan's second airline behind JAL so I didn't know much about it, but it is run with the efficiency, courtesy, style and flair that Japan and its products are so known for, and that adds so much to the experience. Our flights from JFK-NRT and back were on ANA's sparkling Boeing 777-300ER jets which feel top-of-the-line, even in Economy. ANA also has a very unique economy layout with a 2-4-3 arrangement which means that a pair of travelers can get a window-aisle combination with no middle and that is very nice. The jets also feature quick, extensive on-board entertainment systems with large screens and USB and regular power plugs, so you can keep your devices powered up on these long-hauls. ANA's on-board service is exceptional. On-board catering is delicious, interesting and even presented nicely, with Japanese and Western options available. Word to the wise: always go for the Japanese options since they're better, and they usually come with those awesome noodles! The flight attendants are doting and friendly, and make frequent rounds during the middle-parts of the flight to offer water, juice and snacks. There was also a spread of snacks and bites available in the galleys at all times during the flights. ANA's flights between Japan and Ho Chi Minh City are also great, but were flown on older Boeing 767 aircraft. These jets also have on-board entertainment but the cabins were older and the options were more limited. In any case, on-board service was just as good and friendly, and on-board catering is exactly the same. Overall, ANA was a pleasure to fly, and made these very long flights easy to endure. For flights between New York and Japan or other destinations in the Far East, ANA is a great choice and probably a very underrated one at that!

ANA's flights between Japan and Ho Chi Minh City are also great, but were flown on older Boeing 767 aircraft.

Boarding the disabled first slows the entire process when if they were boarded last with only checked bags and seating specified for disabled so they exit last it would improve the process for all the regular passengers. It is usually a miracle when the plane lands that many can now eagerly walk briskly off the plane. Also designated boarding rows are not consistently utilized by all airlines and should be.

We had to wait on the mechanics to check some things- which I was totally fine with because safety is always first, especially in the air. Then, we spent about 45 minutes waiting + taxiing to the runway, before the pilot told us we were going back to the gate due to said mechanical issues. Once we de-planed, we had to wait over an hour for a new plane to arrive at the airport to take us to Charleston. Walking around the JetBlue terminal at JFK airport, I saw most other flights were experiencing delays as well. The airline did issue us $12 meal vouchers on our credit cards, but by the time the voucher reached my email inbox, I was trying to stay close to the gate to avoid missing my (new) plane. I wish we'd been told about the meal vouchers as soon as we got off the plane so that we could have used it. Once we boarded the new plane, we still had a long wait to taxi to the runway and take off. We arrived in CHS about four hours late. The airport was still crowded at the gate, as the plane was flying back to JFK at 10:30-11 PM at night. The redeeming quality of JetBlue was the free in-flight wifi. I'm really glad the pilots turned it on as soon as the doors closed. I was able to crank out a few Yelp reviews and keep my airport ride updated throughout this saga.

I am not excessively tall, but I have very long legs. I need leg room. Southwest's prices have also gotten ridiculous. So when I found out that I could fly first class on Delta for only a little more than "Choice Extra" on Southwest, I booked it. Total no-brainer. You get one drink ticket on SWA with Choice Extra. . I had two drinks on Delta. And a meal, no snacks. The meal was sufficient, certainly better than a bag of nuts and bringing my own food. And not having to watch a movie on my laptop. I've flown first class on Delta quite a few times in the past. There are more seats now, and they seemed a bit smaller. There's no pillow and blanket waiting for you anymore. Luckily, I brought my own cashmere blanket. The plane was cold, just like it's supposed to be. SWA flights are often too warm. We were given water, but not offered a drink before takeoff. The meal selection was okay. I had requested a gluten-free meal, but it disappeared? I ended up choosing the smoked salmon salad, which was pretty good. The movie selection was okay. I had seen a lot of them, although they did have the Oscar winners. But the seatback screen and in-seat charger outlets were great. It was lovely to not have my laptop on my tray table. There was no buffering, which happens far too often on Southwest. We were offered headphones, but I had my own. All in all, a very pleasant flight. I used the Priority security check-in because the line was much shorter than TSA precheck, but I had to remove my shoes, and my laptop bag got pulled out and resent through security with my laptop and IPad in a bin because I hadn't taken them out of the bag. Oops. Might do precheck on the way back. Good thing that my socks matched. I'm flying Delta on the return trip. Undecided whether to stick with them or try United. I flew United first class when my SWA flight was canceled, but I was exhausted and don't really remember it. Will check prices/flight times and decide then. Funny, I was perfectly happy with Early Bird and open seating, but Choice Extra simply doesn't compare to first class. Especially since the price is nearly the same.

I flew China Southern Airlines from New York to China. We had a layover in Wuhan. The agent booking the initial flight from NYC didn't give us enough time to clear immigration, reclaim our bags, and check them back in. So we ended up missing our flight. China Southern rebooked our entire party on the next available plane which luckily was 3 hours later. They did this change without additional cost to us. I thought that was amazing because they did not have to do that! The flight attendants were excellent. They responded promptly and efficiently to everyone who pushed the call button. They anticipated passenger needs before they arose. The seats were large enough to make the 14-hour flight as comfortable as possible. Every seat has their own entertainment with a nice selection of movies, TV shows, and games. They kept the passengers stocked with pillows and blankets. They fed us multiple times and the food was relatively decent. The flights left on time and arrived early for the most part. On the way back to the States, I was able to speak with the ticket agent and they checked our bags all the way through which should have been done initially by the agent who booked our tickets so China Southern arranged that for us as well. I have nothing but good things to say about China Southern Airlines and I would fly them again :-)

The first time, we were on a very old airplane. It was about a 10-hour flight from JFK to Tel Aviv, so it would have been nice to have had some entertainment. There was a TV screen from 1984 on the back of every chair, and it played movies that kept cycling through, AKA you could not control the start or end time of it. Coming home, we were on what I was told was a Dreamliner, and it was very modern and much better. Each seat comes equipped with an iPad type of screen and there was a large selection of movies, TV shows, and even books to choose from. The food was actually very good for the most part, for breakfast yesterday they fed us omelets and I don't eat eggs, so I asked for something else, but they didn't have an alternate (they said they had ran out). Since I can't eat dairy either, and the breakfast consisted of yogurt and other dairy things, I was stuck eating the bread and the small cookie. On the newer plane that we got, the seats reclined far back, which I thought was a good thing at first... Until the rude passenger in front of me put her seat down all the way for the entire 12-hour flight. I initially asked her to move it up a little bit and she did move it all the way up (more than I expected). Later, she reclined all the way back again, and I asked her to move it up a little, to which she flatly replied, No. She must have told the flight attendant that I asked her this, too, because the flight attendant then asked me not to "tell" her that she has to put her seat up. (I didn't TELL, I asked....) Other than that, the trip home was much better than the trip there, due to the modern plane and the snacks and amenities offered.

Started out getting on the plane thirty minutes early, all is well with the world. Sit down. Wait. Wait. Keep waiting. We left 80 minutes late. Guess how many announcements they made. I'll wait (I did already for so long). Yup, that's right, 0. We literally sat there from 11:20pm through 1:10am with not one announcement. So we finally take off, things are fine. About seven hours in, the elderly woman next to me tried to in-recline her seat in business class. Nope. Unsuccessful. So the staff comes and tries to fix it for ten minutes while she's standing next to them. She's 80 for chrissakes. Let the woman sit. So after over 20 minutes of this, they offer her first class, she wants to stay with her family, so they give her my seat and I take the first class seat. Yay. It's so....average. Literally the only difference between first class and business class is more leg room and better waitstaff. It's not special. So super long story long, coach would have been a nightmare, entertainment doesn't exist (there's a TV but it one from the 1980s with programming from the 19th century), there's no Wifi or outlets for an 11 hour plus flight, and the food isn't good. So why two stars? Well the seats are comfortable. I slept better on that plane than I do in my bed. I wouldn't go at all in coach, but business class is fine. And I felt safe which can't be understated. Back again and it's worse than last time. 2.5 hour delay with no announcement why. So for three flights, I've had waits of 1, 1.5 and 2.5 hours, respectively, and numbers of announcements of 0,0 and 0. My friend is in coach and he says that it stinks unbearably. It's also very warm, as the air isn't on despite us being on the plane for twenty minutes. I'm still not going to give it 1 star since I sleep so well in business class on these recliners, but this airline doesn't have much else going for it.

I am shocked by my own positive review of Austrian Airlines from exactly the same time last year!…read moreThis time, it was all largely awful as follows: 1- Tight, cramped seating that made the 8 1/2 hours really miserable. The aisles are so narrow that the flight attendants who walk aggressively, the carts, and other passerbys constantly knock into people in the aisle seats. 2- Barebones amenities: Poor entertainment choices on flights to and from JFK. Lots of 'B' movies and TV. 3- Poor quality food: Vegetarian dinner was simply pasta and tomato sauce- no vegs, no nothing. Breakfast was a hard sweet roll and the coffee was beyond awful 4- Filthy/dirty bathrooms! On most other airlines, the staff will check periodically to make sure the bathrooms are bearably clean. NOT on Austrian. How utterly disgusting after many hours in the air! 5- Hot and stuffy in the cabin with no ability to manually adjust air flow above our heads and the staff kept it warm- probably in the 80s. Who can sleep in such heat?? 6- Check in at the Vienna airport for Austrian Airlines is incredibly barebones. No personnel to check you in. Instead you must use the confusing machines, with only one assistant to help people use the many kiosks. The only personnel are the 2 people to receive your checked-in luggage. The Austrian Airlines experience was so poor that I now dread using them again if I want to return to Vienna. I probably would even chose using Luthansa with a stop, in order to avoid this really terrible airline!

I had to call and could not do this online as we have a child flying with a different parent each way. I was trying to purchase tickets to Vienna today. Called the number online Austrian Airlines listed as 1 (800) 843-0002. Pressed 2 for United States, received message, "for organizational reasons, you will be redirected to Luftansa." I spoke with two representatives for which when they went to try to book the line was connected but remained silent - they didn't respond further without telling me to hold. I then called back and spoke with a lovely man Derriek who was reportedly able to make the reservation and took my credit card information, but didn't give me a confirmation #. I called back and rep Porgy said he could not find my reservation. I requested to speak with a supervisor Gabby who also could not find my reservation and said we could try to rebook so in the process of checking flights and giving her all our information, she kindly went to check how much extra baggage would be, but then returned and noted that since it was an austrian air flight, she could not book for us (?!!!) She said I would need to call Austrian Air. When I told her that I DID call Austrian Air and that the phone redirected me to her organization which I thought was Luftansa. I asked for Austrian Air's number and she gave me516.738.4422. I called that number and received a recording that it was a customer feedback line to which no live person would answer (!!!) I left a message to notify them of the issues. I then resorted to a travel agency. However, when just double checking if the Austrian Air number really did route to Luftansa, I got representative named John, who said they were a "Miles and More" Star Alliance center who would be able to book any of the star alliance airlines including Austrian Air and Luftansa. But THAT call got disconnected. This was so crazy and wasted hours of my day. I'm very disappointed by these airlines and wish they had the decency to at least be upfront about whether they could book or not and do it in a timely/professional fashion.
