The facility is also well taken care of. Puppy Training - we really enjoyed our introductory puppy training class. It was a great way to introduce our pup to new dogs, people and experiences. The instructors were very knowledgable and willing to answer all questions. They seemed genuinely interested in every family. Daycare - our puppy started out loving daycare but as time went on he was more and more hesitant to go in. I doubt this had anything to do with Sadie's but more a result of his personality and experiences changing. He was going just once a week and maybe it wasn't the right routine. The staff always assured us that he had a great time once he was in and playing. It was also nice to see him on the webcam (when it was working). Grooming - after a bad experience elsewhere, we were pleased to discover Sadie's also offers grooming. Our pup always looks good after a wash and cut. He seems to enjoy the experience (or at least not dread it ;) I still think it's crazy that I pay more at his salon than I do at my own but I'm also not prepared to start doing it myself.

With the assistance and training of Adam and 780 Kennels, I am proud to say I am the owner/handler…read moreof the first Rottweiler in Alberta to be fully assessed and certified as a qualified service dog. In fact, she may even be the only example of her breed working as qualified service dog in Canada. I came to Adam almost a month before our assessment date. We had already been cleared by the vet, submitted the medical paperwork and an outline of our training history. Roxy and I had a very good working relationship but I felt I needed her to be a bit more attentive to me and responsive. On our first visit I explained to him what my goal was and went over the various behaviors and skills Roxy would be tested on. He had us work on some basic obedience and then had us do some exercises to help increase her focus. By the end of the first session I could tell I had made the right choice in bringing her there. Not only  did I already feel an improvement in Roxy's responsiveness, I left having really enjoyed the session. The facility was great. Clean and a good temperature. Adam really listened to my concerns and was patient with me. I was already excited for our next session. In the next few sessions Adam determined the best way to keep Roxy motivated and had us really working on increasing focus. Then he began introducing challenges like ignoring treats from others, bringing in another dog and having Roxy completely ignore it and continue to remain focused and respond to verbal commands. I should mention that up until the final two sessions before our assessment, Adam had us doing everything off leash. Every time I put a leash and her mobility harness on, I noticed a marked improvement in her responsiveness. I use voice commands for a lot of steering and everything just seemed to keep improving. By the time our assessment date came up, I had no doubt in my mind that Roxy was well prepared. She passed easily. Before coming to Adam, she was a really good dog and I didn't think there was much room for improvement in our relationship. I was mistaken. In just under a month with about ten sessions there was a dramatic change. Roxy went from really good to excellent. Our lines of communication became much clearer. My confidence in her as well as myself has improved. I rely on Roxy for independence and that communication is so important. I can honestly say I've never felt better about my relationship with my dog than I do now. I plan to try to budget to continue sessions with Adam to introduce a few more tasks to Roxy's resume. I really enjoy our training sessions. Because I have some mobility issues, I tend to find doing things in front of people who are watching me to be a little intimidating. Adam has been very patient with me and understands my limitations and I was actually surprised at how quickly I became comfortable with him. The only disappointing thing I experienced at all while working with Adam and 780 Kennels was the occasional snowed out day thanks to Mother Nature. Whether you simply want to improve things with your dog, or if they really have issues that you need help with, I highly recommend at the very least a consult. Every dog I have seen there is happy and calm. When he brought in one of the pitbulls for Life dogs to use in our distraction training I was genuinely impressed with the Quiet relaxed nature of her. On occasion as I'm leaving a session someone else is coming in and every comment I've heard from anyone else bringing their dog to him is similar. The positive change in their dog amazes them.  Or they've tried a few different trainers and got nowhere and were at their wit's end until coming to 780 Kennels and now they can manage their dog. Adam and his staff seem to understand that dogs are individuals and that there are no cookie-cutter methods that are going to work for all of them. I'm so glad that I have had the support and wisdom from Adam. Because of him and his team at 780 Kennels I had absolutely no doubt that Roxy would easily handle any of the obstacles or challenges she would have to face during her service dog assessment. I would highly recommend him to anybody with any dog. At some point I will need to find a successor for Roxy, and I know I want Adam and 780 Kennels actively involved in our training plan. She is very rude and caters only to her high level agility clients. I attended classes for 6 months and she never bothered to learn me or my dog's name and would teach class by sitting in a chair, yelling instructions at you and talking to other people in the building. You are expected to set up and take down the equipment for class, but instead of asking students for help and showing us how and where to set it up, she'll start yelling and belittling you. They also don't focus on obedience skills and it can become pure chaos in there with off leash dogs running wild.

The first class is for owners only which took me by surprise at first, however, it made perfect sense why very soon after. Jen laid out the rules and how the training will work as well as what is expected from the owners. We brought our puppy (3 month old wheaten terrier) to puppy 1 thinking that his sit, stay, lay down, spin, which he could already do, would be the star of the class and he would be perfect forever. Get your dog around 15 puppies and all of those "tricks" go out the window in a hurry. What we soon realized is that we needed to learn how help the dog behave rather than teach it tricks. Because like I said, the "tricks" he could do in our home, were nothing when distracted. And ultimately having control of your dog while they are distracted can and will save your dogs life. Think about busy streets, parking lots, dangerous spills that smell yummy to your puppy, and plenty of others. All huge distractions where you quickly lose control of your puppy and it could lead to a horrible situation. What we have learned is that gaining control of your puppy while distracted is an art that takes lots of practice, lots of patience, and lots of coaching. While I am extremely biased, in my opinion, there is no better people than Jen, Ashton, and the rest of the staff and volunteers at Sherwood barks. The both of them have the most incredible understanding of animal training and dog knowledge, regardless of the breeds. They also helped me choose the right food for my dog so that he is eating the best possible food, and he has been the happiest ever since. Jen can be blunt when it gets wild in there, but that is only because 20 puppies can get out of hand pretty quickly and it's because you are likely doing something that you shouldn't be doing, and it is only to help you master the skill. Attending Sherwood barks once a week is something that we look forward to. My dog is now going into puppy 3 and is doing absolutely incredible. Keep them stimulated mentally and they won't chew or misbehave at all. Do yourself and your puppy a favour and make Sherwood barks a priority in your week. They spend a lot of time rescuing stray cats, ensuring they get fixed and have their shots. I had my small dog in getting fixed by their vet, she did very well and stayed the day there.

The Diamond in the Ruff website caught my attention as I read her no punishment technique. After speaking to Colleen, we decided that a private class would suit us best. And I can say it was well worth it. We learned so much but the most important lesson for us was emergency recall. Our dog is 2 years old and we adopted a second. Both LOVE chasing jackrabbits and are distracted by squirrels. They come flying back after a few minutes when we use our word 'boomerang', to get their favourite treats. I also appreciated her recommendations on socialization. Hunter was very intimidated by children and strange things on familiar people. His bark is very intimidating. Colleen walked us through techniques to desensitized him. He now is able to look to us for direction. We have and would recommend Colleen to anyone who asked. The private lessons were perfect for us but Colleen or her assistant can help decide what will work best for you.
