I was greeted by the staff member, Jake, who said everything in the store was on sale (yes, even that swordfish hanging on the wall). Scorpion Records opened in October 2020 and I'm glad to see this shop still open over 3 years later. Record Selection: 4/5 Pretty good selection of reggae LPs. I picked up a Paragons record for $20 and a very clean copy of a Mott The Hoople record for $10. The records could be a little more curated. While crate-digging I noticed some records were missing their covers and some cardboard sleeves were empty with no record inside. Value-wise, the prices were set to about double the median price on Discogs. Customer Service: 5/5 Jake was helpful and hooked me up with a Grateful Dead sticker. I was looking for one their foil Scorpion Records stickers, but they were out of them. Ambience: 5/5 Christmas lights and plenty of tchotchkes contribute to a unique ambiance while shopping (see video). Special Events: 5/5 Jazz Night is on Mondays at 6pm. This is the largest selection (aside from corporate-owned Bauman's) of rare books I've seen that include the dust jacket- a collectors actual dream. It's the biggest breath of fresh air to find a rare book store owned by a woman, and to be treated like a human being. I normally get side-eyed from rare bookstore owners and some of the conversations I've had sound like: "May I see the Portrait of a Lady in the case?" "All of these books are at least $100.00 and up." ".....I know." "Do you have any Wilde?" "The book about the woman hiking alone? That's too new to be in our shop, Barnes & Noble would have it." "I'm talking about the 1800s poet." "Oh." I take it personally because while I look like a millennial who doesn't know what she's talking about, I treasure my rare books like they're my children. Sunday stayed AN EXTRA HOUR at her store while I looked and answered all of my questions that I had, never making me feel rushed or unwelcome. After selecting a first edition Fitzgerald, she wrapped it in bubble wrap for my travels back home and gave me an updated book with all of the rare book sellers in the country.

I've had nothing short of amazing digs here at my local record store (2 min away); and found things I never knew I wanted on vinyl to boot. First off, the owner and all of the staff I've met are knowledgeable, warm, and have excellent taste with what they play inside the store. I recall having a fond conversation with Matt when he heard me blasting the Yamatsuka Eye side project, Audio Sports, from the listening booth before taking it home with me! I also have Deep Cut records to thank for selling me OG copies of Julee Cruise's Floating into the Night which I got signed by Angelo Badalamenti. As the owner mentioned they are a small business, but a special one I hold dear to my heart. I still cherish my mireille mathieu and heiner goebbels lps! Wish them at least 10 more good years!

I reached out to a few places, but Canal Sound & Light were the only ones who could do it. That was my lucky break. Saturday before the event, the venue calls to say their HVAC system is busted and they need to move us to a different location down the street. Canal Sound & Light were awesome throughout. Even though I'd never organized a meeting like this, they identified what we needed, gave us a reasonable quote for it, made themselves available for setup and teardown before/after the event, and even adjusted the equipment rental and pricing on the fly when they realized we didn't need a TV because the new venue had one in place already. Everyone was super nice, clearly knew what they were doing, and yet never talked down to me. And the sound was so good, the remote participants could hear us better than we could hear each other in the room. @_@ The event was August 2022, but I realized I never wrote a review. They totally deserve 5 stars. I hope they never go out of business.

Well, it was kind of like the Motown of Reggae Music... the biggest reggae record label in Jamaica responsible for some of the genre's most formative records. Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd was a legendary producer for Studio One, and he started this reggae vinyl store in Brooklyn to sell all his records. In fact, until he passed away several years back, he ran the counter at the store every day.
