I absolutely love this doctor. I work with doctors on a daily basis and this man is one of the nicest most warm hearted people to be around. I hadn't seen him in maybe 2 years and when I went back for a checkup he made it a point to ask if I had any more vacations planned since the last time I was there I was telling him I love to travel. Whether this was a coincidence or not it was still a nice gesture. The little time I spend with him during my exams is enough to know he cares deeply about his practice and his employees reflect this as well. The first time I was there I spent well over an hour with his assistant picking out the perfect frames, which I still absolutely love. The second time around was a bit faster but his assistant was extremely helpful in explaining what my insurance benefits were and which frames look the best. Highly recommend this doctor! read more

I received an email asking me to "Yelp!" Dr. Jacobs office and I'm not going to pull any punches here... My wife and I started seeing Dr. Jacobs when he was in the Esplanade Mall. We were happy with him for many years until we were dumped several years ago because they no longer accepted the insurance provided by my employer. We couldn't afford to keep going to Dr. Jacobs and pay out-of-pocket for our exams and glasses at the time. Seeing Dr. Jacobs once a year was always fun. Alice was crestfallen when she found out we couldn't anymore. I seem to recall the office manager was rather rude with her on the phone about it, she was pretty upset when I got home that day. It left a bitter taste in her mouth and she decided we would look elsewhere. So we tried a few other optometrists and couldn't find one that worked for us as well as Dr. Jacobs. He really was quite personable and the glasses from them worked. We finally settled on Lenscrafters in Ventura, They were OK, though we dreaded going to Pacific View, and the optometrists changed out every year it seemed. At least they had a pretty good selection of frames and you didn't have to wait for 1-2 weeks to get your glasses. In fact, the glasses I use now are from them and still correct me to 20/20 vision. After a while, it became too hard for Alice to get to Ventura, so we tried some local optometrists, without much luck I'm sorry to say. Alice passed away last year. I thought I'd give Dr. Jacobs a try this year, seeing as they accepted my insurance again. (don't know what changed, same insurance provider) Dr. Jacobs is still the same affable person I remember, and the staff is pleasant. But I have to say that I was less than thrilled with the services. I was only able to find one pair of frames that I liked, and that was still just "settling" on something. After being told that I would be able to have bifocals ground with the material I chose, (and paid extra for) I later received a call informing me that this could not be done. I settled on having single vision lenses made and waited. I received my new glasses and while I could see clearly straight through them, looking through towards the edge of the lenses resulted in blurry vision, most noticeable when looking left while driving. I went back, adjustments were made and I tried them for the week. They still weren't working right. Went back and we tried some adjustments again (which basically left me with the glasses uncomfortably shoved up against my face) and I gave them a good weekend of wear before going back. They said they would have some new lenses made. Waited some more. Picked up the latest iteration and I noticed right away that while better, they still exhibited the same aberration. Some more fitting and I said I'd give them the "good 'ol college try", and I did for the whole weekend. Went back, willing to try again, only to begin receiving the impression that they thought I was the one with the problem, "I couldn't adjust to the new material". Sorry. I know how I "see", was not experiencing the same problem with my old glasses and felt that I was articulating precisely what I perceived the difference was between my existing glasses and the new ones. I decided right then to dissuade them from any further effort on their part as I didn't want to waste any more of their time. I asked for a refund of my out-of-pocket costs and left the office. The check was mailed promptly. I wasn't even provided with a copy of my exam results or prescription. But the issue that bothers me the most? (aside from not having new glasses and finding out from my insurance carrier that Dr. Jacobs' office won't release the benefits because they don't want to eat the cost of my glasses that didn't work, forcing me to wait until next year to get new ones) What bothers me is the fact that my previous 2 annual exams by different optometrists indicated that I was at the high end to just over the high end of normal ocular pressure, indicating possible glaucoma. With this knowledge in hand, I fully expected Dr. Jacobs, a very experienced and knowledgeable optometrist, to mention something about it after his exam. Not a word. I know exams can differ, and I was actually more determined to get a proper diagnosis because he made no mention of it than if he had. Ocular pressure can vary, but they should have picked up on it. The previous 2 exam findings were confirmed by an opthalmologist this past Tues. Don't get me wrong, I'm only "glaucoma suspect" and there will be further testing. My eyes are otherwise extremely healthy. But I do now question just how good my exam from Dr. Jacobs office was. I'm dismayed that an optometrist that I had all the faith in world in for so many years left me with such a strong feeling of disappointment. I needed to order contacts through a different optometry.. I recently moved yo this area so everything is new to me. I ran across this place on Google . Gave them a call explaining my situation. I unfortunately forgot the ladies name that talked to me but, she is the secretary at the front desk she answered EVERY question I had being very patient at the same time. I had A LOT of questions too! I haven't even made an appt. at this place yet just ordered something. I would highly recommend this place though to anyone in the area. read more

I always wondered... Is there such thing as a doctors office that actually cares? The answer is YES! Dr. Jacobs is a Godsend! I am legally blind in both eyes without my specially made lenses due to a bad LASIK procedure. I could nor get help from any of the big clinics like UCLA without going through fire. I was on hold for an hour at UCLA and so I searched and found Dr Jacobs. AMAZING! The main reason I made an appointment was due to my eyes constantly being red and irritated. All I received was a 5 minute exam and a brochure telling me not to stare at the computer as much. He was nice and charismatic, but if you're looking for anything more than a quick prescription, you're better off going somewhere else. read more

Everyone in my family loves Dr Jacobs. My grandchildren think he is very funny. I have been his patient since he was in the Esplanade. I was a teacher for 30 years and always recommended him for my students. He diagnosed me with cataracts. I have had the surgery on one eye and now have 20/20 vision in that eye. I look forward to my second surgery next week. Dr Jacobs takes his time with each patient. If you have any eye issues, make an appointment with Dr Jacobs. BAD SERVICE - BAD SERVICE - DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR - I tried to get a copy of my prescription and they will not give it to me. The office manager which is the wife of Dr. Jacobs flaunted the fact that she was Dr. Jacobs wife and that I could not talk to the doctor, she refused to let me talk to the staff that I have always talked to. I paid for my services with the doctor and feel that I have a right to my prescription. Out of frustration - I tried to return a pair of contacts I ordered and she really socked it to me on return fees. I have been seeing Dr. Jacobs since the Esplanade mall was open - OVER 10 YEARS and this is the gratitude I receive. There is more than POLICY there is CUSTOMER SERVICE and LOYALTY... In this economy I would think Dr. Jacobs would want to hold on to every patient he can... He has lost not only ME, but my husband and both my daughters. I hope Mrs. Jacobs is happy! read more

The first time I visited dr. Gary Jacobs April 2015 I had a horrible experience. My glasses were the wrong prescription and they added things I didn't even need to the lenses. When I finally picked up my frames 2WEEKS LATER i couldn't see in them and they forced me to keep them saying they couldn't change them. That same day I got out of the office I got into a car accident because of these glasses , they gave me the completely WRONG prescription and it caused me to become injured. I let them know of my situation and with no sympathy they told me I had to wait until next year in order to get new glasses. I waited until February 2016 and decided to give this optometrist another chance, when I went in I completely explained my situation all over again and all Gary Jacobs said was "wow I'll make sure to never give You that prescription again" I couldn't even get an apology from anyone on staff. After paying an additional $35 for a Retina scan machine instead of having my eyes dilated I was confident that I was going to be receiving my correct prescription with no errors. After 2 weeks of no call from dr Gary Jacobs office on the whereabouts of my frames I began to call and the staff kept stalling saying my glasses were on the way. They said I would receive my glasses between 3-10 business days & on the 14th day I called again and they said the glasses were barley going to ship! So the first time they LIED to me saying my frames were on their way when they weren't. Wow this is false advertisement and the staff should not be lying to patients. During my call the receptionist also mentioned in a rude tone "Oh yeah I see here in the notes that you have been calling". What is that supposed to mean? Finally on the 3rd week I received a call saying my glasses were ready. I WAITED ALMOST A MONTH FOR MY FRAMES. When I went to pick up my glasses I asked for a summary of my visit and the receptionist Terry sighed and looked annoyed and when I asked her if she would print it she said "Mhmm". Since when is "Mhmm" a word in the English language ? What does that mean? I then asked her to elaborate on the charges for me and she once again sighed and made a big deal looking for her calculator. After explaining them to me she told me to take a seat so someone can adjust my sunglasses. After waiting the same person who attended me the time before came around and she asked me how the sunglasses felt and I told her I couldn't see right in them and that it was not my prescription. She then cut me off before I finished and said that I needed to try them for at least a week before they could change anything. I told her this had happened to me before and I ended up with glasses that I couldn't see from for an entire year. She insisted I waited and so I agreed and I asked for a copy of my prescription before I left and she blankly stared at me and became bothered when I asked. I clearly stated to her that on the first day of my appointment she had said that she didn't want to give me my prescription and it would be too much of a hassle so I had to wait until the glasses were ready so To get the prescription so I was surprised when today I asked her for the prescription and again she became bothered and said "i can't print it for you because you don't even know if you're going to keep your glasses or not" I shockingly asked her why she couldn't give me the prescription either way so she proceeded to HAND WRITE IT ON A POST IT and handed me my prescription. This is not a professional form of prescription and I'm quite disappointed on how staff handles situations as such. Now I'm probably going to wait an entire month again for my new prescription. I will re update this review with how my 3rd experience with them will go. It's really eye opening how for the past 2years I've been treated poorly and Non helpfully and lied to by Dr. Gary Jacobs and his staff. Could this be racism or just ignorance? Whatever the case may be this optometrist is not qualified to continue his practice with constant errors, and staff that is unwilling to help, and terrible customer service. I do not recommend this office to anybody unless you want to wait 2months to receive ur glasses and all along the way deal with obstacles that after paying $800 for a visit just become a waste of money and an inconvenience to any individual. I hope you highly take my situations into consideration before you decide to step foot into the office of Dr. Gary Jacobs. You have been warned. read more

Dr. Jacobs and his staff are AMAZING! If you are looking for an awesome Optometrist in the area,a great staff, and a variety of eye frames (including high end brands), this place has it all! I usually work with Rene and she is just exceptional to work with hands down. She is very attentive, knowledgeable and very helpful. I always look forward in seeing the staff because they are friendly and always willing to help. The office is located at the Morgan Stanely building (tall blue building at the Esplanade). They have a large selection of eyeframes and since my prescription is not so great, all of my sunglasses are also prescription. I always get them done with Dr. Jacobs because the lab that they work with does exceptional work. I am always happy with the end results and I always get compliments when I wear them in public.
