I called hoping she'd have last minute availability and was extremely happy that she was willing to fit a first time client into her schedule. I'm not the best with keeping up with my brow maintenance and typically resort to waxing due to previous pain I experienced with threading. Alka was not only extremely knowledgeable about eyebrow shaping and but also made the experience nearly painless. I appreciated that she made suggestions on how and where she'd thread so that my eyebrows fill into a more beautiful shape over time. She told me something I won't forget, "eyebrows are meant to be cousins, not sisters", according to Michelle Phan. So telling me my eyebrows are lopsided, too different from one another, and make me look odd (implying they haven't actually been shaped for my unique face/eyes by another threader) is inaccurate and not a good way to retain clients. read more

I used to go to Hemangini to get my eyebrows threaded and while there was nothing wrong with the service there, it was always booked. I'm a nurse with a crazy schedule so I really value flexibility when it comes to scheduling. That being said, I was unable to schedule an appointment at Hemangini for almost a month and my eyebrows were starting to resemble Heimlich from Bug's Life . Desperate, I turned to Yelp and Alka's business popped up. I texted her and she was super accommodating! She continues to always take me in the same day or within 24-48 hours which I appreciate! She operates out of her garage which she has transformed into a salon-like room. Her equipment is clean and I notice she cleans her chair and table quite often (i.e between customers). She wears gloves and a mask. Parking can be a little difficult but you can park in front of her studio. She takes cash or venmo only! What I appreciate the most is how detail-oriented she is when it comes to the eyebrows. They say eyebrows should be like sisters not twins but mine were more like cousins twice removed. She told me mine were uneven and asked which eyebrow I liked more. After making sure she knew what I wanted, she began working and made sure to check in with me throughout the entire process to check that I liked what she was doing. After a couple of sessions, I can confidently say that my eyebrows are more like twins now. I have a high pain tolerance so I'm probably not the best judge of whether her threading is painless (I mean it's always going to hurt a little to some degree no matter what right?) but I would say that compared to others, she works quickly and efficiently, which really minimizes the pain. Ive gone through a fair share of threaders (is that the proper title for them?) and waxers and my eyebrows have gone THROUGH it. Therefore, I would never want to recommend someone I couldn't 110% stand behind because I get how upsetting it is to look in the mirror and find your eyebrows at different elevations-- or worse -- half bald (right before prom too!), so I hope that if you're reading reviews for Alka trying to decide whether to go to her, my review helps convince you! read more
