Alive Herbals is one of the most practical shops in Brooklyn. They have every kind of herb and seasoning you could think of, neatly organized, and with a little description of its uses on the bag. They also make their own herb/spice blends - their garam masala is one of my absolute favorites. Alive Herbals also has a great selection of essential oils, at some of the best prices I've seen. The people who work here are friendly and knowledgeable, and their rewards program is a great bonus. They also offer bulk options for some of their products, which is helpful if you're not local enough to stop by frequently. I do wish that they could switch their packaging from plastic bags, but I understand why that might not be feasible. Either way, they've got a great selection at a great value! read more

I was on the search for Aleppo pepper and just knew this location had it -- I was right! Alive Herbals is neatly and fully stocked with a VARIETY of seasonings, herbs, and oils. WOW! I was blown away by everything that was inside, ranging from naan to spices to middle eastern foods, to herbs (not to mention Thai curries, simmer sauces, essential oils, natural deodorant and fruits and nuts galore). I can't even begin to tell you the array of goods available at this store! I shy away from cooking Indian food because it's hard to get the spices at my local store but I am THRILLED I found this place. read more

I come here for spices that are unavailable at larger supermarkets (fenugreek, bulk mustard seeds, green cardamom pods, hibiscus), paneer, fresh naan, and organic fruits and veggies. I can't believe I'm the first person to review this incredible store. They carry absolutely every spice under the sun, as well as every kind of dried fruit, bean, lentil, rice you can imagine. It's a dream for cooks. I happened to find myself in need of decorticated cardamom and mace on a Saturday night - they had both and they were open! Kalonji seeds, annato, sumac - you name it, they have it. Plus an incredible range of essential oils, teas, etc., etc. And all at super reasonable prices.
