I have been using this place for alterations for years and I have been extraordinarily pleased with the quality of work they do! I am constantly taking things in - from the simple to the complex, as I am petite and need clothes altered regularly. In some cases, as I have lost weight, dresses have been taken in 2-3 times they have practically been remade - and they always fit perfectly. I brought in a dress Monday morning to have it altered. I was promised a Thursday afternoon pickup since I need the dress for an out of state event a few days after that. I just went to pick up the dress during open hours (3:45pm) and the store was closed. I'm assuming it has to do with the weather, but I wasn't called to be informed the store would be closed. I would have picked up the dress earlier and pinned it for my event, but nope. I already paid which is even more upsetting. Not reliable and no communication. read more

Should you find yourself in need of alterations, I would -not- recommend going to Alice's Alterations in the Home Depot Plaza off Tower Road. I am a sewist. I am aware of what goes into an alteration as well as what well done work looks like. I took them a hem alteration on a floor length sateen gown. I know this fabric requires a practiced hand and does better with pro machines. They charged $40. Happy to pay for their time and expertise. When we arrived, on the day they appointed, they were unsure where our gown was. Eventually, it was found and we were given an unpressed gown (pressing is standard) with a badly puckered hem. I pointed this out and was grumpily told that it would come out w pressing. I hoped it would but was fairly certain it would not. You see, this is what happens when this type of fabric is not pinned, is stretched while sewing and then bunched to make fit. After pressing it was still puckered. I attempted to point this out to the owner at which point he raises his voice and keeps cutting me off to tell me it's perfectly fine. I told him that this level of quality I could have done on my home machine, instead we paid for their professional quality. He then yells at me that he'd like to see me do it on his machine. I'm done at that point. No disrespect was given to him. But I'm not going to be yelled at. All that needed to happen was the seam be resown. Properly. That would take about 20 mins. So never go there. read more

Alice's Alterations was phenomenal! It started by me taking my tux to her asking her to do something difficult with the shoulders on it. She cared less about her making money and more about me being satisfied that she sent me to the competition because she believed that they would be more of a service to me. I brought my tux over Eric's Alterations and had the worst experience of my life. He was asking $150 to alter my tux and he was extremely rude (even turning me away on Wednesday and telling me to come back Friday), so I went right back to Alice who charged $60 for the whole entire tux. I ended up using Alice, and the tux turned out amazing for more than half the price. It was done in 3 days and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Alice! read more

It was literally horrifying. The worst experience one can ever have, I read the reviews about owner being blunt but I thought it may be a language barrier. He messed up all my clothes except one and he said it was impossible to alternate them and wanted to charge me. I asked him for some discount and out of blue he became verbally abusive with broken profanity and nearly charged at me for a physical altercation. His wife intervened and pushed him away and out through the back door. I nearly called 911 and just paid $190 and got out of there. There are other alteration shops in Gainesville please consider useing them unless you have a basic course in self defense. read more

This is a nice family owned alterations shop located next to Home Depot on Tower Rd. They are very nice, have a fast turnaround time, and do a great job. In addition to all of this their prices are reasonable (not likes some of the other shops in town - Ada's) They have reasonable charges to hem pants, and all their other charges are very reasonable too. Seek a cheaper and faster alternative elsewhere. I moved to the area and used them the first time because of convenience. I'm in the military and thought the cost was quite high, but gave them the benefit of the doubt...maybe they were unfamiliar with military uniforms. Recent I went back and inquired about seeing on four small patches. I swear he made up the price on the spot...I told him it was too high and if he was going to charge that amount, I wouldn't be back. He wasn't phased. I asked how long it would take for the job and he said 7-10 days...for, 4-small patches! Thanks, but no thanks. I Yelp'd another location in the parking lot...the cost was 75% cheaper than what he was going to charge...and it only took 3 days! read more

I'm writing this as I am sitting in the store waiting for my pants. First I'll start with a background, while in high school I worked at a dry cleaners for 4 years and we had a great tailor and did alterations so I have seen a lot of different kinds of alterations. I brought in a pair of jeans because they had a whole in them. This is actually my favorite pair of jeans that's why I didn't wanna give up on them yet. I was charged $10, I was quoted $7 at a different shop but I thought this was 'you get what you pay for' so I decided to stick to this shop. Long story short, after a week, all they had done was put a patch in the interior. They didn't use any thread to cover it up, so the hole was still visible and the jeans were worse than when I brought them in. The shop owner started screaming when I told him it was bad. I had to tell him to calm down because I wasn't raising my voice and there is no reason he should be. His wife came over and in a different language said something so he gave me the money back and she took out the patch. They wanted another week to take out the patch but I said no and it took then 10 mins. Literally it took me longer to write this review than it took then to take out the patch. read more

I have been a regular customer at this place for 3 years purely for convenience of location but now my patience has run out. I have used them in the past for adjusting trousers and also a professional suit. They are always expensive and always take too long, even if it's a few inch chop off the length of the trousers n nothing else they take a week. They ask you to pay in full before they take the job, so if you're not happy with it later you're screwed. They've continue to raise prices over the years and service has declined. They come up with excuses to not do the job properly. I've been patient with them still, but recently I took formal dresses to be altered. They refused to make the alterations requested because they said it wasn't possible (even though I explained to them how it could be easily done). Later, I altered those outfits myself at home. I STILL gave them another chance and went back a few weeks later with another outfit. All it needed was adjustment of length of sleeves n trousers and since it was a formal dress I preferred if a tailor did it. They said it couldn't be done. This time I was flabbergasted and my mother who was with me gave me a look of complete bewilderment since their excuse made no sense. The only reason that I can understand is that these were fine outfits with expensive fabric and they were avoiding a job that would require extra care. I walked out, came home, easily made the alterations myself and vowed never to go back to waste my time. I'm a physician not a master tailor, and if I can make these alterations easily even by hand, then it should be no excuse for a place like this. read more

I've been a faithful customer of Alice's for over 3 years now and counting. I have had nothing but good service from this husband and wife team. They're very good at what they do and very honest when it comes to the length of time it'll take them to finish the alterations. I've taken a variety of clothing ranging from blouses to skirts to maxis to formal gowns. My husband had his tux altered here too! They offer exceptional service at quite reasonable prices. I took several pairs of pants to be hemmed and they did a great job quickly. I got in and out with try-ons and markings for 3 pairs of pants in about 8 minutes. They were ready in 2 days and could probably have come sooner if I had asked for it. The only thing keeping them from 5 stars is that they were a bit on the pricey side compared to my previous tailor, but that was in a bigger city so perhaps these prices are what the market will bear. My experience was not good. I have two ties that needed simply to have the loops repaired, approximately. a 1 minute job each. After conversing in Chinese with whom I assume to be "Alice," I was told that it would be $4 each. That's more than extravagant. I would hate to get a quote for something like hemming my pants. read more

They had good reviews, and I needed alterations on my wedding dress. I called and asked if they do wedding gowns. They said they do them all the time, so I brought it in. They seemed like they knew what they were doing at first. They said it would be ready in a few weeks for me to try it on and take it to get cleaned, and we made an appointment for closer to my wedding for last-minute alterations. I left feeling fine about the whole thing. A week after it was supposed to be ready, I hadn't heard from them so I called. They hadn't even started yet, tried to convince me that I didn't need to even see it until a week before my wedding (even though I again explained I would need to take it with me to get it cleaned and pressed) and eventually told me I should bring it someplace else. When I picked it up, there was a small stain on the front of the bodice. I wish they had just told me from the start that they couldn't do the job. read more
