Ali Baba has always had delicious food that is well prepared but this is unacceptable and they should be embarrassed. The food we most looked forward to enjoying was burned and one of the beverages missing entirely. Don't be fooled by the lackluster facade of this Mediterranean restaurant because the food is fantastic. While we were looking for Greek the food was a more Turkish. No alcohol is served here. The dining room is very informal. Food is prepared behind a counter in view We started our meal with a messa plate ($16.95). The plate was served with a huge flatbread served warm with a wonderful yogurt dipping sauce. The messa plate offered a sampling of all their appetizers including grape leaves, eggplant salad, carrot salad, roasted red peppers and much more the flavors were rich and garlicy...wonderful with the bread. This would be a whole meal for two. For entree I order the Lahmunjun ($9.95) which I highly recommend. It was a large flatbread with a meat sauce and accompanied with a salad. I was only able to eat 2 of the 8 pieces and took the rest home. This is a shareable meal. Others in our group had the Chicken Durum, Cheese Pide and Fillet Steak. All dishes were excellent. The service was quick and friendly. The restaurant has revived numerous awards over the years that are displayed in the entry. We did not need reservations at 5:30. The large mezze with all of the little scoops of magical flavor is so delicious that it's hard to pick a favorite. When they show up at your table with the bread bigger than your plate it's hard not to squeal with delight. We live in PA but stop here whenever we get the chance. I don't know how it took me so long to make it to Ali Baba. When you have a wood fired oven, and you are making your own bread to order, no matter what country you are from, you're speaking my language. Man, I love hot fresh bread. I also happen to love cold garlicky spreads. I'm also a bit of a hummus snob, since I make a pretty mean version of the stuff at home. It was the cold carrot salad which really surprised and delighted me from the large salad sampler. The giant beans were also another favorite. Going with a large group was a lot of fun because we got to try many different sections of the menu. Of the two pizzas we ordered, the curry chicken outshone the doner kabob. I'd put the meat pide over the lahmajun. The meat dishes were tasty, but some of the meat was pretty tough, even the veal. Still, it would not dissuade me from trying different meat dishes. The sauce of the guvech was delicious mopped up with extra bread... I cannot believe there was extra bread. Those loves are huge. What I would probably prefer is smaller loaves, and just ordering more of them as needed. The bread is better hot, and maybe that's a good pro-tip for visiting. Insist on small breads, and replenish them as needed. More than anything I need to go back. If I lived locally, I suspect I would have long ago figured out my favorites, and triangulated my way to a five star experience at this no-frills Turkish eatery. But considering we gorged ourselves, and after splitting the check, the total came to $20 per person, this is a very reasonably priced place. Now I've got to assemble a crew to tackle it yet again to delve further into the menu. read more

My wife and I stopped in for lunch while we were heading to the Adirondacks. Having read other reviews, we were excited about a nice Turkish lunch and we were not disappointed. The Adana and lamb kebabs were good, though the lamb was more well done than I would have preferred. The real stars of the meal, though, were the fresh baked lavash and the mezze plate, which featured some truly spectacular salads and dips. My husband and I semi regularly get the chicken Durham sandwich from here when we're at a stand still for what to get for dinner that's nearby. We live in Troy and it's a short 5 min drive, but almost every time we pay for extra meat in our sandwiches which is an additional $8, they don't put it in and claim we didn't pay for it in our online order even though the price shows we did. They also don't include any sauces on the side so don't even try asking for it unless you want to be rudely told that it's extra. We always pay for it without a problem but they find the need to be aggressive when relaying the message. Our last visit here resulted in some extremely disappointing sandwiches and we most likely will not be returning. The sandwich in the past was worth the awful service when we can't decide on somewhere nearby to pickup dinner last minute. May or may not be worth the visit, but be prepared for rude service, be it for dine in or take out. The restaurant isn't anything special inside just a regular restaurant, and there's almost always seating available with no wait time. Conveniently located close to RPI campus, Ali Baba is a favorite of the students. The menu covers Turkish style appetizers, called mezzes, various kebabs and Turkish style pizzas like meat pie and Lahmacun. Very authentic food, they are delicious and fast. It is a sit down restaurant but plenty of delivery and pick ups were happening. Ambiance is bare so food is the clear focus here. They don't serve alcohol. Service is efficient but minimal. For the price point and food as the focus, I would recommend this restaurant for casual lunch and dinner. read more

Yum, yum delicious! This place really hit the spot tonight. It's perfect for a chilly January evening. I don't knoow why we don't go here more often but we finally got around to it tonight. We got here at a great perfect time before they got really busy. For an appetizer we went for what they are most famous for, the huge puffy lavash. It truly is a masterpiece straight out of the oven all warm and bubbly. It's fun to break off pieces and dip them in yogurt sauce. They were just starting to get busy as we ordered. My husband's Lamb Tandur came out first. Served with marinated red cabbage, white jasmine style rice and onions the lamb was fork tender and delicately spiced large pieces. Next was my son's Iskender Curried Beef served in a spicy curry with yogurt. He enjoyed every saucy bite. My Iskender Kabob came out a bit later. The waiter apologized explaining that they had to cook fresh beef. It was worth the wait. Tender beef cooked in a tomato yogurt sauce served with the same sides as my husband's. I ate what I could happily and took home the rest to enjoy for lunch tomorrow. The service was efficient and friendly. My mint tea was quite tasty too. I plan to return soon to try more of tHeir enticing menu including Mediterranean pizza, all sorts of spreads and salads and baked dIshes. The price is right too! read more

An long overdue review from me on Ali Baba. My favorite place to go for Turkish food but that's not saying much as I am not aware of other options for Turkish food in the area. Nevertheless I really like the food here. Nothing that I ordered so far has disappointed me. Picture for each food item on the menu is really helpful. Servers have always patiently explained each dish to me when I asked. I also google for answers on food in case I am still wondering. The lavash bread they serve to begin your meal is wonderful...freshly made and baked in their open fire oven. The yogurt sauce that comes with it for dipping is very tasty... the sauce is similar to what you get on a soulaki, but a bit thicker and more dill. Ali Baba, established in 2001 (if I'm remembering that correctly), is run by some fabulously friendly folks that know what the heck they're doing. I was literally dancing in my seat and humming with food giddiness as I tore up that giant lavash and dove into that cold sampler platter. If you order the large appetizer sampler ....it's literally got everything! No choices necessary!! How friggin great is that?! And the large lavash is gigantic (and delicious). Lahmacun received thumbs up. Chicken shish was perfect- moist with just the right amount of seasoning. Even the rice was good. Back to the appetizer sampler...everything was outstanding. For delicious, authentic Mediterranean food Ali Baba is the perfect choice. I have used Ali Baba 2 yrs in a row to cater an after home game meal for the RPI mens soccer team. The players really enjoyed their food; choice of beef, chicken or veggie Durum/Wrapped Kabob (Gyro) with yogurt sauce. The food was on time, hot and superbly packaged which made it very easy for me to distribute to 39 Individuals. The owner and staff are so pleasant to work with and were able to accommodate our team dietary restrictions. In addition to this catering, I have dined at Ali Baba several times. One of my favorites is the small mixed plate salad sampler - the barbunya and eggplant salad - wow, so flavorful with the freshly baked Lavash bread. We were visiting my daughter at RPI and we heard that this was the place to get some Mediterrane food. Doesn't look much from the outside or the inside. Go here for the food, not the decor. We ordered the large lavash, chicken shish, and large mixed plate. Everything is made fresh. The lavash bread actually comes right out of the oven hot. The staff is friendly and fast (I think it's mostly family that run the restaurant). Love to support small business and we will be back again.
