The kitchen here is open until 10 on the weeknights which is a huge plus for me. The Carnitas Grilled Cheese was out of this world good. Iowa has a long and proud tradition of restaurants that serve food with the flavor removed for your…read moreprotection. The Wagon Wheel Cafe in West Bend did not get the memo. It is a cozy little hole-in-the-wall on Main Street, and it is tiny. Do not let that fool you. Whatever the building lacks in square footage, the kitchen makes up for in the one thing so much of the state's food forgets to bring: Taste. Four of us went, and not by design, we each ended up ordering from a different part of the menu. That turned dinner into an accidental taste test with no coordination and no collusion, and the verdict was unanimous. Four plates, four corners of the menu, and every one of us said ours was really good. The committee has adjourned. The portions were generous. Only one person at our table finished everything on his plate, and the other three were not defeated by bad food. They were defeated by a lot of good food. Come hungry, and do not feel bad if you cannot finish; three out of four of us could not. The service matched the food. Our server was attentive in the way every restaurant claims to be and few actually manage. We never had to flag her down, and we never had to pester her for anything. Great service is when you notice you did not have to ask. I am already looking forward to driving back to West Bend, and next time I will be ordering the Reuben. So here is your briefing: Find the little place on Main Street, order from whatever part of the menu calls to you, and bring an appetite. In a state where flavor is too often optional, the Wagon Wheel Cafe brought plenty.

It had a local flair to the restaurant and looked more like a storefront than a restaurant, but certainly a hidden gem! We arrived a little after lunch closing time but were still thankfully accommodated. Service was excellent, lots of great options on the menu, and the bacon cheeseburger was arguably one of the best I've had in quite a while! I'm not sure I'll ever find myself back in West Bend Iowa again being from the NYC area but if I do, I'd certainly make a stop here again!

Although the restaurant was not particularly busy, our food took over an hour to arrive. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo, and when it was served, it appeared to have been reheated quickly, as the cheese had already begun to solidify, which affected both the presentation and quality of the dish. I was also disappointed by the pricing. The menu listed the Alfredo at $12.99, but my total for that item came to $19.25 after tax, which seemed significantly higher than expected and was not clearly reflected on the menu. The restaurant itself has a lot of potential, and I'm willing to believe the staff may have simply been having an off day. However, based on this visit, I expected much better in terms of service, timeliness, food quality, and overall value.
