If I could give zero stars I would. The stylist that cut my hair completely butchered my long, curly hair. My hair was down to my shoulder blades and it's now around my ears. When I called the salon to go back and have it shaped and cleaned up I was told they did not have any time for a few days. Devastated and embarrassed I could not wait and went to another salon. I have searched for a number of years for a spa that is more interested in providing me with a relaxing, enjoyable experience rather then getting me in and out the door so they could book more clients. I found what I was looking for at Alexander's. The staff really is wonderful. They take the time to make sure you are comfortable (and sincerely mean it), they ask you what outcomes you would like to see from any of the services you are having done, and put in the effort to make sure you get those results, even if it means going slightly over the allotted time. Jenis, the esthetician listened to me when I told her about previous facials I had, what I disliked and liked about them, and tailored a facial for me. It should also be noted that I have extremely sensitive skin and allergies and Jenis has always taken the time to read the ingredients on products to make sure they wouldn't irritate my skin. If you suffer from any sort of skin problem you also know that just putting cream upon cream on your face won't help your skin in anyway. The facials at Alexander's are more then just putting a cleanser then a moisturizer on your face and sending you out the door. The manicurist Juanita was a doll. My nails have never looked better. Again she, like Jenis, took the time to give me the experience I wanted. Women go to a spa for the overall experience and to relax. Alexander's has it correct. You grow your business from properly treating your clients and paying attention to their individual needs, not booking as many clients as you can in one day. That doesn't establish returning clients. I've used this salon for well over 2 years and had 3 stylists. I have to agree that consistency is not their strongpoint. I've had excellent cuts and I've had really horrible cuts, too, where the Manager suggested another trim. I've since found another salon that's much cheaper, with happier stylists that actually listen to what you want for your hair. I have used Alexander's a number of times for various services. First was a haircut, going from very long hair to short and the stylist botched it. I went home and chopped the rest off myself and fixed it in San Francisco. Since then, I've used the salon for massages, facials, and more haircuts. So far, my picks stand to be; Christian for haircut, Steve for massages, and Kathleen for facials. The prices are a bit high, so reason for a star off. In regards to the "Spa" only: The massage therapist was wonderful and the massage itself was great, however there is no additional atmosphere or perks. On the third floor I was serenaded by trucks and the occasional rap music at the intersection outside the window which was less than relaxing. The music didn't play. The changing and locker area is modest and there is not even a mirror around, let alone a relaxing steam room or showers. I was most upset while checking out when the receptionist tried to tell me the gift card I used was $40 short for the cost of the service. Luckily, I questioned it instead of coughing up the cash because they just nonchalantly said "oops, we were using someone else's gift card." (Even though they swiped the one I had given them...?) That could be a concern.... I hope they don't accidently use any of your gift cards! With their records and the overall ambiance I would not return and would also advise against purchasing a gift card for someone there. read more

Will not return. For my birthday, I decided to get a 75 minute Swedish massage. It was anything but relaxing. I left violated by a male masseuse there - who, without asking and without my permission, massaged my buttocks the majority of the time. Even going underneath the band of my underwear. Meanwhile, "something" was resting on the palm of my hand as it laid palm up on my side.... When I addressed this with the manager, I was offered another massage - no thank you. I do not want to return to the place where I was violated. I asked them for a refund of my $90. I was told that they would call me back. They did not. Since I did not hear back, I called them again. No returned phone call. I called them 3 days later to follow up and finally got a hold of someone. I was told that their policy is to only give store credit. I told them I was uncomfortable even returning to their salon. They said I could give it as a gift card to someone else. At first, I was astonished they would even employ a masseuse that would conduct themselves in that way. Now I am SHOCKED that, what I thought was a reputable establishment, would respond to such a serious complaint in such an insensitive way, without taking any responsibility for the actions of their employee. read more

What an amazing place! I came in today with a broken foot and the worst case of cast foot ever. There were no outward complaints for having to work on such a terrible foot situation, which was awesome. I was apologizing up and down, though. Unfortunately, I didn't get the name of the girl who worked on my feet, but she did a stellar job. I got the deluxe pedicure and she spent over an hour and was so gentle. They offer you a drink (coffee, tea, water, wine) and are so sweet and kind. Plus, today they were performing complimentary massages, and it was lovely! If I had more money I would tip so much (and I'm going to plan on getting the same girl next time so I can tip her more then!) I highly recommend Alexander's! read more

Massage. Go for the massage. Wow. You get the royal spa treatment. Great relaxing atmosphere with soft lighting and gentle music. You're greeted and shown the facilities and given a robe and slippers with a private locker to lock your clothes and valuables. You wait in a quiet lounge where you can sip lemon water. Beverly provided me with a Swedish massage. She is delicate yet firm, and has an intuitive sense of what needs attention. I've been to Alexander's several times. A few times were great, another few were just sort of okay. That's my only complaint - the level of service isn't always consistent. There have been times when I've had an appointment and got right in and others when I've waited forever. Most of the spa staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, but I've dealt with one or two who just make you feel like you're annoying them or they just don't really seem very happy. The relaxation room is really, really nice. The whole spa is pretty gorgeous, too. They use great products and most of the time, I've had a great experience - my only feedback to management is to be more consistent with offering a good experience for everyone :) read more

Brides think twice before booking here!! My maid of honor had to remove all of the make up that she was charged $35 for (in the spas lobby)...not one staff member showed any concern that a client was dissatisfied...frankly they didn't care. They did not care that they made me, the bride, wait 45 minutes for make-up. When I went to pay for my services (it's 12:30 and my limo is scheduled to be at my home for 1:30 and photographer was at my house since 12pm waiting)....I had to wait for the receptionist to locate my service sheet, yet another 10 minutes of waiting. Needless to say, I was so late for my photographer that we weren't able to take many pictures at my home. Even worse, I was over 20 minutes late for Church. As a result, I had to hire another photographer to do bridal portraits (a do-over). I will never step foot in Alexander's again!! No I know why all the experienced staff members left! So incredibly disappointed with this place. There is nothing more that I hate than to give a business a bad review over something that could be fixed or even at least given attention to the issue. I understand that not everyone that leaves is 100% happy and has a 5 star review to give. I got my hair cut and colored (painted not foils) on Friday afternoon. This was my first time going to Alexanders for my hair. I've been there before for spa packages and I was happy. I've been getting my hair colored for 12 years as a blonde, I'm a brunette. I understand the process and up keep as a blonde. Yes, Im not as bright during the winter because I chose not to be but again, I understand things like this happen. I left really upset. I spent a lot of money, I'm not even going to go there, not to mention over three hours at the salon. I went in to brighten up my hair for the summer and that's not at all what I left with. I have pictures of before and after, it's the same color. I'm not saying who I went to because I think she's very talented. But when I asked what it would look like and we both looked at a picture and agreed, that is not what it came out as. Whether it was an a mistake on communication, the color process, or anything else, that's understandable. It can be fixed. But to not even get a call back from this place? Are you kidding me . I called three times since then to speak to a manager and have not received one call. I called Saturday morning , late Monday morning and then again on Monday night. Again, I am beyond disappointed and still incredibly dissatisfied with the color of my hair. Not to mention I have my best friends wedding in three weeks and I have to make another appointment, obviously somewhere else and spend another few hundred dollars to get what I really wanted. read more

I was a client at this spa for about 5 years until recently I got my 15th Brazilian wax and suffered through an hour treatment that was unusually painful. I said something to the receptionists of the unusual pain and they looked at each other then back at me. I left a 10% tip because the job was done although very painfully. The previous day I woke up with pains in my groin and golf ball sized bruises. I called and spoke to a woman at the front desk of the spa and then again spoke to the manager who said she would speak to Renada and call me back within the hour. I've been a customer at Alexander's for a few years. Originally, I only went there for massages, but for a year now I've been having my hair done by Cady. Within the last two appointments, we've been working to lighten my hair from the dark red color I had been dyeing it for months. Cady has been so wonderfully patient with my indecisiveness and hesitation. The first time the color lifted to an awful orange-y red and Cady saved the day by putting purple over top to ensure I had a hair color I was comfortable with and enjoyed. The last appointment I had was on January 5th and after it, I was so thoroughly impressed. For the second time, we bleached my hair and were aiming to make it a peachy-pink. However, the results were not as I expected and Cady had another client coming in. She offered to fix it the next day, which I was happy to accept, but then she came back and informed me she had gotten another stylist to do her client that was waiting in order for her to fix my hair that night. I was at the salon for 7 1/2 hours because Cady was determined to make sure I left with a hair color I was happy with. I was so impressed with her willingness​ and dedication to upholding​ a customer's satisfaction and being patient enough with my pickiness (although I tried my hardest to not be a pain in the ass). Additionally, she didn't charge me as much as she really should have. Needless to say, she got a good tip and I will continue to come to Alexander's for my hair appointments. I've followed Buddy Miller to Alexander's and have found the salon to be the nicest in the city. Buddy has been my stylist for well over 10 years and he is simply amazing. Whether living in Brooklyn or now in San Francisco, I always save my haircuts for him when I come home to Scranton a few times each year. Seriously, as soon as I book a flight, I book an appointment with him! My hair is ridiculously baby fine and a little frizzy (not good!), and is not easy to style. I've been to some of the best, most expensive salons in NY and SF and no one can make my hair look as good as he can! Recently, I went in for a trim, and he had just finished when I said, "I've been thinking a lot about doing a pixie again" (like he did years ago.) He looked at his watch and schedule and said, "we still have time, wanna do it? Let's do it!" I was a little scared of making the commitment but I trusted him and knew he would nail it. THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. I have natural un-dyed light brown hair. I had a really hard week and decided to treat myself to a new "do." I made an appt for Alexander's and went in looking for a little slight change. I will say, at the beginning the staff was very courteous and I loved that they offered me water / wine, etc... I wanted something just to give my hair a little more dimension and life. I asked for ombre highlights and said that I wanted it to look really natural -- something summery and and that just gave myself a little more depth and shine. I told the man to feel free to add some depth to the brown with a gloss or glaze. The hair stylist told me first he was going to brighten up the brown. Fast forward about 1.5 hours and as he is drying my hair I thought I was going to pass out. It was "Barney" purple / red. Brighter colored than Sharon Osbourne's hair. It was so putrid and disgusting I didn't know what to do. I remained calm and thought "okay we can fix this." I asked the hair stylist why my hair is this bright pink / purple color and what can we do to make it a "NATURAL" brown / blond that I asked for? Instead of admitting his mistake he spent over 45 minutes trying to convince me that people don't really have brown hair and that brown is just a variation of purple and pink. The manager on duty asked what I had asked for and told him he needs to do a remover on it to bring it back to a normal color. I waited as my hair was again processed. Long story short - it has now been 4 hours. It's dark in the salon. I'm there under one dim light and he got my hair back to what looked like some sort of normal color. I missed the event I was going to that night and got out of there around 9:15 for an appt that started at 3:45. I paid the ridiculous $225 it cost and felt exhausted and relieved to get out and get to bed. Talk about doing something to make yourself feel better. I felt so much worse. I woke up in the morning, saw my hair in the sunlight and immediately started crying. It was now a pinkish / orange. It looked like brassy gasoline. I didn't want to have to pay another person to fix it. I already paid over $200 the day before. I called the salon when it opened and spoke to the manager. She was very polite and said to come in at 10:00am and she would make sure it gets fixed. She tried to tell me that I had to go to the same guy that messed it up because that's their "policy." Why would I want to go back to the person who ruined my hair? She knew it was a lot to ask and not a good idea and changed her mind. I was embarrassed just to walk the 2 blocks from my car to the salon. I walked in and she was like "wow, yeah it is really orange." She asked me to re-explain what I wanted. I explained I wanted my brown hair to stay brown but to put some blonde in the ends and some highlgihts. She asked to see pictures and I showed her the same ones that I showed the tech the day before. She was like "that is no problem, it's super easy! We'll get it fixed!" I sat down with a new girl. Fast forward FIVE hours. I have now had to call out of work and miss an entire day. My hair was dyed and processed over 5 more times. I'm wondering when it's going to fall out. They couldn't get the red / pink out. They ended up dying it darker and darker brown just to try to hide it. At around 3 o'clock my virgin hair now feels like straw and looks like ass. My stylist got the manager I had dealt with earlier (Maria) and I have tears rolling down my face and I'm trying to hide them and not draw any attention. My stylist is rolling her eyes and stomping around because her abilities are insulted that she couldn't get the red out. It was like she was trying to make ME feel bad (worse) that my hair was destroyed. Maria tried what seemed to be the "salon go-to" and tried to convince me that my hair wasn't really red. She stomped over and grabbed two samples of hair -- one red and one brown. She held the red up to mine to try to "prove her point" and it was a perfect match. She admitted it, looked at the stylist and goes "yeah her hair is just red now, but it is a lot better." She snapped at me that she wanted to see the pictures again that I brought in. I showed her again and she said "yeah i'm sure that their hair isn't really brown. It's probably just a filter." I'm thinking... I've had brown hair my entire life... everyone i know has brown hair. It's not really PINK hair with a filter on it in pictures....Maria was non-apologetic. Never once said sorry or offered any sort of condolence. She told me that there is nothing else they can do for me and that I just need to go. I asked if I could have my money back. She said she would "check." She came back and said "go downstairs and get your money" and walked away and didn't even wait til I could get to the door to start talking about me to the other clients. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. read more

After not receiving it I spoke to the merchant and they told me that they would hold the gift card behind their counter and I can pick it up at any time. I was just there recently to have my hair done and I asked for the gift card. At first they told me that they don't keep gift cards behind the counter even though I explained to them that I had called on more than one occasion and they said that it was there. After getting my hair done and upon checking out they had a stack of envelopes that they kept behind the counter even though they told me that they didn't do that. They said that they were looking for my name or another person's name that I gave them and there was nothing there. They told me they had an updated computer system since then and they wouldn't be able to look back that far to see if I actually had purchased a gift card. They told me if I had a receipt or a bank statement they would credit my account. I got a bank statement from my bank with the day and the amount of the gift card and phoned Alexander and spoke to the manager and told her this. At that time she told me that she was able to go back in the computer system and look and there was nothing there with my name or the other person's name on the computer that I purchased a gift card or that a gift card was used and either of our names. I explained to them that I had the bank statement and that they had told me the day that I was there that I could use that to get a credit on my account and the manager who was by the way very rude told me that they wouldn't do it. I told them that they had promised me that they would do it when I was there. The manager told me that she was waiting for the owners to call her back to tell her if they were allowed to do it or not and that she would call me back after she spoke with them. Have been going to Alexander's for many years. The last two years, quality is fair, but inconsistent. Their stylists are MOSTLY good-- there's a male stylist that perpetually tells clients their hair is in a "transitional" phase and encourages it to be "natural," which translates into he can't really figure out how to cut or style it, so you pay 50 bucks for bleh. Alexanders raised all their prices in the past year or so. At one point maybe 2-3 years ago, I actually would have understood a $75 massage. Their dark, quiet sanctuary in the back let you relax mentally before you underwent your massage. They since did away with that room and changed it to a smaller, cramped area that they can't wait to rush you from. Not that you can relax, when half the staff is wearing clunky heeled shoes that BANG BANG BANG on the floor as they walk around back there. The rushing also negates the wine / tea / coffee / flavored water offerings, that you have no time to enjoy. Only one or two masseuses actually do a decent job, Vicky was always pretty good. None of the fountains were working in the massage rooms, which takes away from the ambience and atmosphere (they make enough money, repair them, already.) Product sale pushes throughout styling services are annoying, as is the "cash only" tipping now. But by and far my biggest complaint is the whole "paper slip" deal with charging for services. Not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES, they overcharged me for services I did not have! The first time it happened, when I started to ask about a breakdown of the bill (I had had several services done, I knew roughly it would be about $300, and she rang me up for 425$) the girl at the desk got loud and rude and cut me off, told me sharply "Prices went up, it is what it is," followed by staring at me and making me feel like an idiot in front of other customers. So I paid it. Next session with my stylist, who again pushed for foils, I declined politely and explained a 250 hairstyle didn't seem reasonable. She looked surprised, then went over previous prices, and yep, totally got ripped off on that one! No reimbursement offered. That exact day, went downstairs to pay, girl rang me up for 110 for a cut and gloss. Hello?? Don't see how 45 and 20 makes 110. When I called her on it, she said oh yeah, "someone" must have written it wrong, looked like a color instead of a gloss. Fast forward 6 weeks, same exact thing again. Makes you wonder how many women they make feel like cheapskate idiots in front of other customers so they overpay without asking, doesn't it..? I was told at one point the girls that answer the phone write down the services, and so whatever they write, they charge you for. Thats also why they tried to charge me for a classic pedi instead of an express. This aspect really takes away from their overall appeal. Check your slips, folks!! My gel manis were always good, as were pedis. Quality of haircuts generally good, depends on who you get. Michelle is great. Brea's always been the best. They have a new "points" program now. You get $ off after accumulating so many dollars in services. If you don't specifically ASK the girls at checkout about it, they certainly aren't telling you. End of the day, it's Scranton, not much more to choose from. Pick a non-busy mid week mid day to get most for your money. Update: Just went for a gel mani before Thanksgiving on Wednesday. By Saturday, 4 nails were chipped and peeling. Ugh. Fab. Pedi seems to still be holding up. read more

My go-to stylist is Brea. She is AWESOME. I first came to Brea with a horribly-gone-wrong ombre job that I assumed was a lost cause and would take months to grow out. Within an hour Brea had turned my awful ombre look into something so much more natural and beautiful looking. I was so happy I wanted to cry. And she was so calm and cool about the whole thing, she just knew exactly what to do to fix my hair and she did it. I've since gone back to her and she always gives me great haircuts and styles. She is a miracle worker with the round brush. A few other reviewers commented that their sinks are very comfortable and I would definitely agree with that. The only thing I don't like about Alexander's is the lighting over the styling chairs. It is not flattering to my face at all for some reason... Alexander's is a bit on the pricey side but I think its worth it. THe products they use are top notch. The decor is very nice and relaxing. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because I have not yet used any of their spa services so I can't really give them an all out 5 star rating until I've had a chance to experience more of what they offer. Beware! Horrible customer service!!!! I had been going to this salon for massages, hair color and cut. I will not be going back. A receptionist scheduled me for an appointment with a stylist on her day off. Then instead of apologizing and rescheduling me for a day the stylist actually worked, she got defensive about her error and tried to blame me for her incompetence. I was so appalled I decided to take my business elsewhere. I had heard from many people this place had poor customer service, but I have never personally been treated so rudely by an employee of a salon, especially one that is supposed to be upscale (for this area). Unbelievable. Very disappointing. Will be finding a new place to get my hair done, and weekly massages. read more

As far as haircuts go, research, research, research. This is a salon that puts the emphasis on high tech, loud music and stylists in all black garb. If that's what makes you think will give you a great cut, go for it. I've been going for about two years, tried three different stylists, and I'm done with them. There doesn't seem to be any cohesiveness, if you don't explicitly explain what you want, they'll cut away, and your head will look how they want it to. For two years of cutting, I've only received compliments on one cut, so that doesn't tell me that Alexander's does better than anyone else. My last cut was to the same person I'd been going to, and she wound up confusing me with someone else and cut my hair about two-three inches shorter than usual before I could stop her. I was horrified! She claimed she had discussed it with me on the way to the shampoo chair. Really? I think I would have known if I wanted my hair cut that short. The manager said to have someone else adjust the cut, but really, why bother? Then it would just be shorter yet. Now I'm stuck with a haircut that will take me 6 months to grow out just to get back to its original, at the minimum. I'm horrified that she made this mistake, no restitution was made and I'm out fifty dollars, which is a horrendous fee. I've paid less for better and I've lived in a quite a few states. The first stylist I tried didn't listen to my wants and needs, the second did look at photos, but eventually began cutting my hair how she felt it should be cut which led to the third stylist that did the lobotomy of cut jobs. I'd heard of others getting bad cuts, but didn't believe it. Now I do. They can give a basic cut, but nothing out of the ordinary that requires style and an up-to-date fashion-forward edge. read more

This place is sooooo overrated...they get most of their stylist from the mall...they know the cut-of-the day and that's it...don't expect a haircut taylored to suit you because they call themselves a "salon" & "spa", it's all generic assembly line cuts. read more

My experience at Alexander's was just awful. I had started 3 month's ago to get a haircut and color for my daughter's wedding. I went the first two months March and April and was pleased. Then I went back in May getting ready for the big day. Since I had practiced for two months previous to my May appointment I expected to be calm get my cut and colored and leave happily. Well when I got there I waited 20 minutes and then went to the counter to ask why I was waiting. They said , "Who is your stylist?" I told them and they said she is not in today. They had made the appointment for me a month previous at my last appointment. They then said oh we will fit you in. And they charged $20.00 more than my previous appointment. I hated my cut and had it redone the next day in Boston the day of the Wedding. My only recourse is to NEVER go there again and to warn others of my experience. read more

I had a massage there and the massage was great. I also had a haircut and I am VERY UNHAPPY. The stylist did NOT listen to my instructions and cut my hair way TOO short! I would NEVER recommend Alexander's for haircuts!!! read more

I have been to Alexanders several times and have brought guest's with me, I have enjoyed the services I have received in the past. I was given a gift certificate from my sister, for three services, I was elated at the thought of a deep tissue massage and a mani-pedi, I called for my appointment on a Saturday, being very specific of the 3 services I wanted for me and my friend together. I arrived on time the following Wednesday for my scheduled appointment. When I checked in, for my massage and mani-pedi, I was informed they had only scheduled me for the mani-pedi, NOT the massage!!! I was heartbroken, disappointed and angry all at the same time, that THEY made the scheduling mistake. I expressed my disgust, at this error to the manager at the front desk, and she blew me off, didn't even apologize for the error on their part! So I took a seat, while waiting for my friend to arrive, stewing over this problem and not happy about the way they handled it. When my friend arrived, I went with her to check in, and they screwed her appointment up too for the massage! The appointments were made at the same time. I again reiterated my disgust at this error, and how we had made time out of our busy schedules to make these appointments and the manager again never apologized for the error, just kept asking me and my friend if we wanted to reschedule the massages. I said NO! We went and had our mani-pedi's our manicurist's were wonderful, but I was really too stressed and upset about not getting the massage that we called ahead for I couldn't enjoy my mani-pedi service. I have spent there in the past over $500.00 on services in the last 6 mos and this disregard for my time and complaint went unnoticed and discounted. I sent an email about this experience to the Spa and never heard back. I don't think I will be returning there. Apparently they don't need my business and don't care to keep it. Poor customer service, poor mangement. Since it was their mistake, they should have offered us discount on our next service and some kind of compensation for our trouble. We got nothing!!! read more

Horrible Rude staff. I was 5 minutes late since I wasn't able to find parking around the salon and had to park 3 blocks away. Ran as fast as I could to the salon and still managed to make it almost on time. They said sorry you're late and the stylist would not be able to do your hair at this time and would have to come back in 3 hours. Needless to say I was incredibly upset. Who turns a customer away for being late 5 minutes? When I got home, they had left a message for me exactly at the time when my appointment was saying "since it's now 11 am and you're not here, you have to call back and reschedule". Never again. How is it my fault that the location of this salon is awful in the middle of hell with no nearby parking space. FYI for people that think the location is convenient, it is anything but. The shadiest part of Scranton for sure. I was scared walking the 3 blocks that I did to get to this god forsaken salon. read more

I started back at Alexanders when my all time favorite stylist started working with them. If you want a beautiful color, cut, blow out, make up, whatever, -you need to call and make an appointment with Buddy Miller right away. Buddy has over 25 years experience and has worked along side some of the best names in hair and make up. He also is the one to call for corrective color. He recently is bringing his expertise to Alexanders and I couldn't be happier. The salon is top notch and the whole feel and decor of the salon is just like something you would expect in a big city such as NYC. It's serene and offers an absolute complete experience from massage to mani pedi to color, make up or just a day of relaxation or wash and blow dry for a night out. I can't tell you how happy I am that my favorite stylist is finally there and I can be pampered in not only service/ style but atmosphere as well. If you want a cut or a color that is above the rest and with someone that truly knows their stuff and is interesting to talk to as well, give Buddy a call. You will not be disappointed! read more
