This place is so delicious! I've been here twice now- the first time I got their house made corned beef hash, as in not from a can- ahhmazing!! This morning, per our very friendly waiter's recommendation, I tried the chilaquiles. Holy deliciousness!! I cannot recommend them more highly! Fortunately, I couldn't finish my breakfast and had to take home leftovers :-) My boyfriend had the steak skillet, and he enjoyed every tender bite of it. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, and the coffee is "gourmet", as in not your typical diner coffee. They even have a coffee bar! The menu has a good variety, but is not overwhelming at all- just one page of delicious selections. The ambience however is probably a huge reason I keep going back- it's super clean, has these fantastic rustic wood table tops, slatted wood divider walls, and is open and comfortable. While staying in Elgin this past weekend with a soccer team of 15 and 16 year old boys, we had THREE excellent experiences at Alexander's. We had only planned on visiting for our first lunch, but the boys and parents enjoyed their meals so much (and the service was so excellent), we kept going back! I can't say enough good about our waitress, or the hostessing crew that allowed our party of 35 to sit together (sometimes on rather short notice) and accommodated our World Cup watching requests! Classic "American" Family Restaurant. Great option to yet another meal at the Belvidere Oasis. Alexanders is typical of family style restaurants across the Midwest. Family run, big menu, large portions, reasonable pricing. It is also a great option rather than another fast food meal on Illinois tollway - with a gas station across the street you have everything you need. Service is prompt and professional. Food quality is above average for a family style place, so that is a bonus. Plus - you never leave hungry. If you are interested in a short break along your drive rather than just a pit stop, a great place. They also have some true vegetarian options, not just another salad. My daughter was happy with the choices and with her meal, so that is a bonus also. This will definitely become one of my stops on trips to Chicago/NW Indiana. read more

After a much needed makeover, this place has transformed into my favorite restaurant in West Dundee. They still sell the cakes and pies which are scrumptious! The staff are still amazingly friendly which I love. The biggest change is the layout and decor - this place is so bright, inviting. Lastly the menu was overhauled with new additions - crafty skillet meals (I had the spicy chorizo), banana frosters (waffles, French toast and pancakes) and so much more! The tea selection also was impressive. The quality of the food changing made a huge difference and this is why foodies like myself will come back. read more

Have not been here in years so we stopped for breakfast. The pace looked quite different inside nice and remodeled. Had the banana foster pancakes and they were delicious! Ton of bananas which I liked and my husband had a skillet that I cannot remember the name but said it was delicious. The best part was the hot sauce we discovered they had. Usually restaurants ony have Tabasco and chiliua we never seen this one before but it's hands down the best hot sauce I've ever had. This little gem of a place won't let you down if you are around the area. They have an upscale atmosphere without an upscale pricetag and a variety of decadent items that will do nothing but bring you to food heaven. I can here with some friends and everyone was more than satisfied with the food. Personally I had the Berry Good crepes, and it indeead does taste amazing. HOWEVER, I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed that the crepes were not made in a crepe pan but in a regular pan. You can tell the large difference between a traditionally made crepe in a specialty pan because it's not as chewy. I don't know people, am I a snob? Probably! But anyway, I'm probably the only person ever caring about which pan crepes are made in. So whatever okay! Other than that. Seriously give this a try. I live 2.5 hours away but making a trip up here to have another item from them (may be the Berry Good pancakes, I'm crazy for berries) is a serious possibility. Oh and they have live piano music, the singer/ pianist is pretty epic if you ask me. At first I thought it was a recording but damn was he good. This is my new favorite breakfast spot. Nice decor, modern but simple, good ambiance, great service and delicious food. I had the Elvis Waffle: bacon waffle with creamy peanut butter, honey and bananas. It was really good, the saltiness of the bacon is complimented well with the creamy peanut butter, the honey adds sweetness and the bananas add freshness. My husband had the country fried steak, I didn't try any but he really liked it. That's his go-to item to try at breakfast places to see if he'll go back. He said it was very flavorful and the portion size was good. Along with his country fried steak he got the pancakes. They were so fluffy and the cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top made them delectable. The food came out pretty quick and our waitress was very attentive. A table next to us got sandwiches and burgers and they also looked delicious. Came here once again on a weekday at 11:30. I noticed right after being seated that there were only three other occupied tables at this time and everyone looked like they were waiting on someone to serve them (empty glasses, menus put down). We waited about five minutes just for a bus person to bring us water and menus and another five minutes before a server even showed up to ask us if we wanted something to drink besides water. We ordered our coffee and then she said, "I'll be right back and it'll give you time to decide what you want to order." We almost laughed out loud because we had more than enough time to decide before she even showed up at our table! We put in our order, someone else delivered our food, and our original server never showed back up. We weren't even checked on by a server until the very end of our meal (our 3rd one). In the meantime, a very busy, attentive bus person refilled our water, served me more coffee, and brought us boxes for our leftover food. He was the one who was running all over the restaurant and actually scanning it to see what customers may have needed. So we ended up giving him a bigger tip than the server (who was our 3rd one). The little creams they have on the tables for the coffee had obviously been sitting out since first thing in the morning. I picked up a creamer and the container was warm. I opened it and poured it into my coffee and it had floaters. Cream should meld smoothly right into your hot coffee. Alexanders, you could really make people sick by not keeping these creamers refrigerated or replacing them on the tables every hour! I'd give one star for the service and four for the food, which was excellent (omelette, potatoes, turkey bacon sandwich, sweet potato fries). read more

The best omelette I have had in years! The Alexander omelette was absolutely delicious! Bacon, goat cheese and caramelized onions, perfection. Service was great, very attentive and friendly. Great prices, very understanding that I was by myself and waiting for an appointment so she let me stay for a bit after I paid my bill with no worries. I was raised on my breakfast being homemade and cooked from scratch. My family absolutely spoiled us into accepting nothing less lol. And I have yet to find a place where the food came even close to being considered as home cooked...that is until a couple of days ago lol. I ordered (I think) a Specialty platter or meal. It came with pancakes (that cinnamon butter...YUMMY), sausage, bacon, herb roasted potatoes & eggs over easy . Again and again...AWESOME!! The menu alone was amazing lol. We happened to find this little cafe on our journey home from an event, and we were impressed! It's a modern, COZY cafe serving all day breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Inside there's a gorgeous grand piano, benches, and a fireplace that give it a lounge feel. It's the kind of place you'd love to go to cozy up on a rainy day, or late at night to linger and talk. The bathrooms have mouthwash in a closed mason jar with little cups to rinse your mouth after dinner! I Just love it. For food I ordered the "Berry Good Pancakes" which were delicious. This was a torturing experience. My friend and I got sat right in front of the kitchen where the whole time I could barely hear her talk. The cash register was also right behind us and all we saw was nervous, spastic waiters. I ordered a flat bread and it tasted like someone melted cheese on my meal in the microwave. My friend had Nachos and the beans she said, from taking a bio class, looked like the feces of a pig. It took our waitress 15 minutes to grab our check back from us, even though she was walking past us multiple times due to the register being behind our booth. The lighting was harsh and I felt like I left my body watching how humiliatingly unorganized the environment was. Eating at a McDonalds would have felt gourmet compared to this ditch. Tried this place for the first time in 10+ years. Used to go with my older parents who really enjoyed the all you can eat fish fry, that they no longer offer. 3 adults for breakfast at $56. Oh, 2 of us only had 2 pancakes, no meat , no potatoes, just flap jacks with pretty butter and powered sugar. No alcohol, coffee and pop only and 1 full entree. One ordered roasted potatoes as their choice but got hash browns. Two of us got our food while the 3rd sat there and waited for theirs. Who brings out only food for some and not all. For fine dining the owner Bob has gone to great lengths to make your dining experience enjoyable and affordable. The menu offers a variety of selections from soups to my favorite prime rib served on weekends. The environment is well lighted yet relaxed with tables not crowding each other. A piano player is there to make it an even more pleasurable time. A very clean and open setting. The manager Liz is always around from the kitchen to the front door making sure everything is running smoothly and professionally so your dining needs are met. Pretty disappointed in our last couple of visits. We brought our family here last week for dinner, because we'd only been here for breakfast. We got in on the later side, after 8:30. We weren't taking our time. We ordered as soon as we were asked. But the soups and salads took awhile to come out. We were enjoying catching up so we weren't too bothered. I'd say they came out after about 20 minutes. Dinner came out after about another 20. Of course by then it was about 10pm, closing. We understand that staff wants to close up, but my nephew who was so excited after seeing the dessert case was disappointed after we were just handed the bill without being asked if we wanted dessert. I asked the waiter for a menu so we could get something to go. Seemed like we were putting him out so my nephew decided he didn't want anything. I get that we were there late but part of that was the delay in us getting our food. My husband and I came back a couple of days later for breakfast. We were in a hurry so we made sure to order right away. He has a dairy allergy which we made sure to mention to our waitress, Sue, and we saw her write it down. She was very sweet to us. About 30 minutes go by and we still don't have our food. That's ridiculous for breakfast. Sue kept coming by, apologetically, and thought maybe the delay was because they were being careful about his allergy. Okay, I guess better safe than sorry. Finally our food comes out and his food is covered in cheese. Uhh, seriously? We waited forever and the order was still wrong. So while I was scrambling to eat because by then it had come up on an hour, my husband was still waiting. Finally, his food comes out again, this time cheese-free, thank goodness. After all that you'd think that a manager would come by to apologize and maybe offer some compensation, but no. Nothing. This is nothing against our waitress though. As I said, she was very nice to us. After these last two visits I'm not quite sure how I feel about this place. And it's unfortunate because we liked their food and the restaurant. Update: The owner reached out and apologized for our experiences. We definitely appreciated the sentiment and I upped my review back up a star. We'll be back to give them another shot. read more

First let me start out by saying I have been going here for years and have been many many times. I'm just getting around to reviewing them. The food has always been excellent. Recently ( past couple years or so) they went through a complete renovation and new look. I must be honest. I was nervous. I could not imagine what they could do to make it better. But, to my surprise, they did! Great place to meet and hang out with friends. Great atmosphere. The acoustics inside allow for easy conversation. It's bright, open, and welcoming. I often use Alexander's to meet clients. I'm comfortable that they will go away impressed. Let's talk food. Always spot on. Breakfast- the egg omelette is fantastic and my wife's favorite. I love their skillets for breakfast or country fried steak. They often have live piano being played during Sunday breakfast. Which I enjoy and that surprises me because I am an avid hard rock fan! Lunch is out of this world. Any sandwich you order will not disappoint. Dinner- I can't say enough about the prime rib. I don't know what they season the meat with but it's absolutely delicious! They have a full bar that doubles as a breakfast counter as well. Staff is always attentive, polite, and very knowledgeable. Very clean in and out. Top to bottom.
