I feel like every delicious restaurant in Rome is a hidden gem because somehow they're all located on the dark side streets. Once again our fellow Yelpers did not steer us wrong. We came upon Alessio thanks to our handy dandy Yelp app and all the wonderful reviews. Back in Illinois, the states in general, not many restaurants are located on the lower level so upon entering I was unsure of what to expect. We were seated in the first dining room you see so it looks small but they have an additional dining room as well. We were greeted and seated almost immediately. Alessio is a cozy restaurant with enjoyable servers who made conversation with you and spoke English. We shared a pizza and spinach ravioli. Our first meal in Rome did not disappoint! Now for all you huge "American" pizza fans with the heavy cheese, sauce and meats. Italian pizza is differently as they are a lot lighter on all the ingredients and use fresh cheese. I enjoyed it. I like the light and fluffiness of the dough and a good balance of sauce and cheese. Although we wish there was more meat. I believe it was some type of sausage or salami, but we couldn't see it so weren't even sure if it was on there (haha). The ravioli had a flavorful homemade red sauce and you can tell the pasta was freshly made, yum! The real winner of the night was the tiramisu with amaretto biscuit and nutella! Hands down one of the best desserts I've ever had. I wish we had seconds, even thirds. It was fluffy and light with a even balance of whipped mascarpone. Yummm! We were looking for a nicer place closer to our hotel (Hotel Artemide) and found Alessio on Yelp and it was not too far away. We chuckled to ourselves on arrival as there are quite a steep set of stairs climb down to enter the building. This would never be approved in the US due to accessibility standards. We made it in fine and were quickly seated. We observed the fact that one person was taking orders at several tables (holding approximately 50 people) and 4 or 5 other workers were gathered at the cash register area unconcerned and happily holding conversation. We inquired about a few appetizer items and ended up being served 2 (only ordered one). We inquired about the Frutti di Mare but did not order it. One was delivered to our table anyway. We decided not to make a big deal and ate it along with the grilled vegetables. They were both good, but of course was too much food. For our meal, we ordered the steak and veal saltimbocca along with an order of potatoes. All of the food was very good, just that the service was very slow. My cousins and I are staying nearby Alessio and we gave the restaurant a try due to their good reviews on Yelp. We were seated immediately which we were grateful for and service was nice and friendly. My cousins ordered pasta and I had the Napoli pizza and tomato salad. My food was delicious however my cousins had a different experience. Their pasta wasn't fully cooked and was tough to chew. We decided to give them another try with their dessert ordering the creme brûlée and truffle hazelnut. Unfortunately the creme brûlée was more like ice cream below the top and overall wasn't a great dessert. Sorry to say but I do not recommend this restaurant but do hope they improve their food. read more

I was very disappointed. This restaurant had great reviews on Yelp. My companions and I got seated right away for dinner. While we waited for our food, we saw a line forming till up the stairs. This made us think that the restaurant was a really popular spot to eat. When my pasta arrived, I was not happy. The pasta needed at least 4 more minutes to be cooked. It was too tough. I thought I was over thinking it but when I had my companion try it, she agreed with me. She had me try her pasta and it was just as tough as mine. Being a tourist, I didn't want to ask to get my pasta cooked again. After all this was Italy, I didn't want to offend the chefs. They would know how to cook pasta. I thought the dessert would be the saving grace. It wasn't and it could have been better. I forgot the name of the dessert but it tasted similar to Ferero Rocher. Except Ferero Rocher tasted better. The Napoli pizza my other companion got was delicious. I had her leftovers the following night and I ate it cold. It was still delicious, lots of flavor too. One of the best meals on our whole Italy trip. We had the lasagna (2 different times) and for us, it has become the lasagna we compare all to and nothing can beat it! The desserts are amazing, the fish was delicious as well! A must stop place when in Roma! Service is friendly as well! An update: this is the place that has caused me to search far and wide at home for panna cotta, and nobody does it like Alessio! We are vacationing in Rome and found this one on Yelp! We called and made a reservation and headed over not long after. You descend the stairs into a small dining area that smells heavenly! The house red wine was from a local winery and was absolutely delicious. We had the cheese plate with jam and honey and it was perfect with the wine. I ordered the vegetable soup...it has seriously been the best meal of my tip so far. Delicious!! We also order the artichoke--so yummy! My husband ordered a fish dish that he didn't realize was marinated and served cold...he said we would pay for it, but would like to order something else. I love everything about this place. For starters, it was right around the corner from our hotel, we stopped in after a day of wandering the city. We were on our honeymoon visiting from Hawai'i. The staff was friendly, and we walked in without a reservation and got sat right away, this was about 630pm, right before the dinner rush. We started the meal with the Caprese and Zucchini Flower, and each had a pasta dish for dinner. I enjoyed the Carbonara, and my husband had the Lasagna, (my mouth is watering as I write this review). Did I mention we shared a liter - not a bottle - a liter of house wine for 12euros?! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu and a chocolate cake with gelato, and finished with limoncello shots which were complimentary (a common theme of all the restaurants we visited in Rome). We went here on a whim the last night before leaving Rome on a Saturday night, we didn't have a reservation and we stopped at their sister Resturant across the street first and they referred us over to Alessio bc they were booked. We still had a short wait at Alessio but it wasn't bad. The place was packed and I was really hungry so I was anticipating a great meal. I got the ravioli with meat sauce, 3 big raviolis cane out on my plate. It was an ok meal, definitely filling but not really a taster that fulfilled my taste buds. It was ok. I think like most restaurants in tourist areas they try to accommodate all people and I think they lost something. My friend got the ravioli as well and she didn't have any complaints. Everything you're reading here on Yelp is true. The food and service here are fantastic. I had such a wonderful time and wonderful food eating here and highly recommend it. Yes! Make a reservation if you want to sit inside or not wait. We walked by and it was packed so i went in and made a reservation for the next night. If you get there by 6-6:30ish, you PROBABLY could get away without having a reservation, but no guarantees. Our waiter was so friendly and funny and helpful, he made our dinner lively and entertaining. Everyone is so happy in there that you start chatting with the people around you, so it gives a feeling of dining with friends. The food is delicious. I would have liked to do a full on Italian menu there, but I just wasn't hungry enough for that so I just went with the lasagna and it was fantastic. Creamy with bechamel and flavorful. Really enjoyed it. I honestly cannot recall what my husband ate, probably spaghetti, but we both left feeling full and happy and wanting to go back. Unfortunately, we were not able to return and we were sad about that, but there are only so many nights and there are SO many places to eat. Alessio was our favorite in Rome, though. The restaurant is clean, comfortable, convenient to the train station, friendly and affordable. Bookmark this for when you're in Rome, you'll want to stop in. read more

I was so excited about this spot, and actually thought it would be better than Amedeo nearby since there are so many more reviews. I ordered the Alessio pasta special (recommended by both the waiter as well as Yelp), as well as the panna cotta and recommended Chardonnay. I was a little bit dismayed to see a note on the menu next to my dish that said that "depending on availability, ingredients might be frozen." I think that's what happened with the clams I had, because they were strangely fishy-flavored. The dish was still delicious, don't get me wrong, but they had an interesting texture I wasn't quite expecting to get. Tonight was our 2nd night in Rome. After a long, hot but freakin amazing day full of the Vatican, Pantheon, Fontana de Trevi...etc., we wanted an nice and pleasant dinner with some vino. This place was perfect. Just a few blocks away from our hotel. The staff was perfect to us. We walked in with no reservations and was able to sit down within 5 min. Bread was served to us quickly. We had a nice red wine with our meal which was the caccio pepe and a long noodle pasta with tomato and bacon. Mamma Mia!!! :). So good. So fresh. Well worth the four+ stars. Yum! We stopped here on our first night in Italy. Exhausted and jet lagged, we were in some serious need of some good eats. Alessio did not disappoint! What a great spot-the atmosphere was buzzing at 10pm with exuberant patrons, the wine was flowing, and the waitstaff ran around the small room attending to the full tables. The lasagna was delicious, as was the steak my other half ordered. We enjoyed the local wine and ate and drank until we couldn't take another bite. One of my last meals in Italy (until next time)! We found this place on Trip Advisor as well and it looked like a good spot to try. We made reservations, but it was not necessary when we went since it was still a little early for dinner. Their restaurant is fairly easy to find. It is a lower level restaurant - very cute decor. We had a FULL meal. We started off with: * Salmon me marinato con arancio e menta (marinated salmon with orange and mint) - It was really interesting. I've never had salmon like that with that combination of flavor. I didn't like it very much in particular but I'm glad I tried something new. * Mozzarella di bufala dop (buffalo mozzarella) - I was told I had to get this at some point on my trip. It's literally a fist size piece of buffalo mozzarella. I love my cheese but am not a huge fan of this type of mozzarella so I did not fully enjoy it like I would other cheeses. * Prosciutto di Parma (Parma ham) - Very popular appetizer at restaurants and it really helped balance the cheese and all the flavors we've already had. As for entrees...I was basically already full. We ordered pasta and pizza dishes. After a week and a half of traveling and eating in Italy, we have been spoiled with amazing meals. Their dishes were just a delightful - flavorful and filling. After eating an entire meal, we had to indulge in their dessert. Yes...we all got something, as if we can fit any more in our body. We got the creme brule, tiramisu, and ice cream! They were all very good. This is a great place in Rome for a steak. I easily made reservations the day for my big family group of 10. The day of, we arrived 30 minutes before our scheduled reservation time. But they were able to accommodate us with in 15 minutes. All the staff was super friendly. The food was delicious, from the antipasto, the main dishes and deserts. My friend and I found this restaurant on Tripadvisor and decided to check it out on our way back to our hostel from the Termini Station. The location was downstairs from the street, which was a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Rome. The inside looked rather unattractive, but everyone was seated outdoors in a covered area, so there's probably no reason to ever go inside other than to use the restroom. To start, I ordered the Insalada Mista for 4€ and my friend ordered a prosciutto and mozzarella plate. I'm not sure what she thought of the prosciutto, but she didn't seem to love the mozzarella; it was rather vinegary. My salad was OK, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about. We both then ordered pasta for our main dishes. I ordered the Bucatini All'amatriciana, which was past with tomato-sauce, bacon, and apparently an onion sauce. I can't say I tasted the onion sauce, but overall I thought it was a really good dish. My friend ordered almost the same thing, but with an egg sauce instead of a tomato sauce. Hers came as rigatoni and was creamier, but still filled with delicious bacon. Things to beware: They charged 2€ for a very small amount of water, and another 2€ for Coperto. BUT they gave us complementary limoncello (an Italian lemon liqueur) which was surprisingly excellent. read more

Before coming to Rome, my friends had warned me that the food was not good because the city caters so much to tourist. During my first few days at Rome, I could really see what they meant. Nothing was amazingly good and I was generally unimpressed. Then one night I was strolling down the street and saw a sign for a restaurant pointing into a tiny alley way. When I approached the alley, I saw stairs down to a beautify outdoor patio restaurant that felt secluded even though it was just steps away from the busy street. Despite being minutes from closing, the restaurant still accommodated us and I was glad they did. This was by far the best food I ate in Rome and maybe the best food I ate in all of Italy during my trip. We ordered the fresh fettucine with bacon, the mussels and clams, and a sorbet. The fresh pasta was perfectly textured; simple but delicious. The mussels were amazingly fresh and we devoured all of them quickly. The highlight was the sorbet. It was absolutely refreshing and sweetly tart and the fruit that came with it was perfectly ripe. The service was great. They were always cheerful and attentive. Came to this establishment because it was around the block from our hotel and of course we were hungry. I will say that before I write the review that I truly regret not getting steak here.the reason why I said that is twofold: seemed like the go to dish here as evident by the number of people who had it and it looked and smelled great. I started off here with a liter of their house red wine. The wine here is extremely strong, more than a liters worth and is great. For my meal, I went with their lasagna. The lasagna was good but I had better (especially on the USA), not enough cheese would be the negative for me (and I'm not even a cheese lover). They also give free bread (which was ok, a bit stale) and a after dinner shot of Monticello (I believe it's called that). Overall this should be a 3.5 star review and I like the downstairs mystic entrance it has, maybe next time I'll try something different like a steak. read more

Calamari rings such as those served here (battered and fried) are hard to find elsewhere but Alessio's were very salty. Thanks to fellow Yelpers we found this place less than a block from our hotel (Hotel Rex). It was a great experience, the food was great and very fairly priced. We shared the charcuterie and I had the raviolini and my wife had the lamb, both were delicious. Service was slow at times but it was very busy and I could see that the waiter was attending very well to everyone as a whole so I actually see that as a plus as he was working his butt off and being very friendly despite his workload. We also noticed that quite a lot of the customers were locals as well so I don't think this place is popular simply die to tourist reviews like mine and others. We also had some tiramisu for dessert and greatly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this place. Amazing food at non-tourist prices. read more
