About a month or so ago I spotted La Puna Empanadas truck and stopped to give the food a try and…read moresupport a small, women owned and operated, business. Really enjoyed the first experience and so when I saw the truck again today after an early morning walk in Descanso Gardens, I stopped again to get their empanadas. This visit confirmed my initial impression which was/is that the empanadas from La Puna are "fantastic"!! I ordered four empanadas, the corn and spinach, as well as their chicken. Also ordered one called the Arabe. All four were superb!! The corn empanada was a combination of sweet, salty, and creamy. This was the result of using good quality corn and a combination of both cream and either jack or cotija cheese. The spinach empanada was equally delicious. It had a unique taste profile prompted by the really smart use of a hint of nutmeg. The combination of spinach and the nutmeg, along with whatever they included, have the final product a "wow" factor. Chicken empanada was slightly smokey and very flavorful, and the "Arabe" was a wonderful combination of ground beef, onion, red bell peppers, with spices that offered a distinctly Moroccan taste. Really outstanding. The thing that tied all these different empanadas together was the dough they use to make them. It was firm while still light and flaky with a mouth feel that was soft but not mushy. It was the perfect compliment to the filling. Like eating a really, really good pie where the filling and the crust are harmonious. The food offered by La Puna Empanadas reflects attention to detail, the use of really good product, and most importantly pride in their Argentinian culture and it's food. If you enjoy empanadas or are curious about them, I encourage you to try those offered by La Puna for all the reasons I've outlined here. One final note, the women who own and run the truck are very nice people whose passion for what they do is evident in every bite of their food. !!!

I ate every type of empanada and was absolutely impressed with how they came out! Their deserts were the perfect cherry on top as well! I highly recommend everyone checking them out to get a little slice of Argentina! 11/10

I think I just found my new favorite sandwich in LA. I'd been craving Nickos for awhile and finally…read moremade it over to try their turkey pesto sandwich. This thing was SO good. The smoked turkey was piled high with tomatoes, pesto, banana peppers, provolone cheese and balsamic glaze packed into a perfectly toasted thin bread. Every bite had so much flavor and the ingredients tasted very fresh. The portions are also fantastic for the price. For $16 the sandwich came with two huge halves that were easily enough to share or save one for later. Already thinking about I'm ordering next time. Nickos, you've officially ruined mediocre sandwiches for me. 10/10!

I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment. We tried three…read moresandwiches: the Plain Breakfast Sandwich, Turkey Pesto, and Pastrami. The breakfast sandwich was by far the worst of the three. It looked amazing, but the taste was a completely different story. The eggs weren't salted, let alone seasoned, and the entire sandwich was incredibly bland. It genuinely tasted like cardboard, which was especially disappointing given how appetizing it looked. The pastrami sandwich was a 5/10 at best. I wasn't a fan of the texture of the pastrami, and the meat itself lacked any particularly memorable flavor. The turkey pesto was easily the best of the three. The bread was good, the ingredients worked well together, and the sandwich was nicely assembled. It was the only one I actually enjoyed. Overall, the sandwiches looked much better than they tasted. With so many good sandwich spots around, I wouldn't return.

Another place I've had bookmarked forever. The problem is every time I try a restaurant in…read moreGlendale, I am sorely disappointed. Nonetheless, I decided to try this burger joint located in an outdoor shack in a corner parking lot next to a pharmacy. There are spots to park in the lot, though it's not a huge lot. You can walk up and order at a kiosk on the outer side of the building. Or, you can order off their website. Oddly, despite prices being essentially the same (I think fries were 10 cents more), the app had a couple of deals they did not offer if you ordered at the restaurant. One was 2 double cheeseburgers for $14. Another was 2 specialty create-your-own fries (you can add up to three toppings on each order of fries) for like $14. Both are great deals. I got my stuff to go since it's literally a small shack with maybe four stools on one side where you pick up the food. Most people got their stuff to go from what I saw. I don't think anyone stayed to eat there. I added bacon and grilled onions to my burger, and split a fries with the missus, who had the other cheeseburger with grilled onions added. They do charge you for these additions, but it's reasonable. Food comes out very quickly. Despite being busy with the lunch crowd on a weekday, my order got made in under 10 minutes after I placed it on their website. The burger I thought was very good quality, as far as the meat goes. The bun was serviceable, but they could jazz it up with a sesame seed bun. The fries were also very good. The only problem I will say is that they fall victim nowadays to a glut of great burger joints, at least for me. Amboy in Chinatown and Covina, along with Burger District LA in DTLA are exceptional and have set a very high bar. Great White Hut's product is great, but it's not exceptional. Would I order it again? Maybe. I wouldn't be disappointed to order it or eat it again. I enjoyed my meal. But, I don't live in Glendale, so the drive is about the same to any of these three places, and with that being the case, chances are I would just go to Amboy or Burger District. Still, there are a lot office buildings around this location, and if I worked there or lived nearby I would certainly come here to grab a burger regularly. It was good stuff. Just not mind blowing. I still recommend it, especially to locals. Check it out if you haven't yet. There also are a few locations from what I could make out on their website. If you order off the website, make sure you order from the correct location.

But as a treat, this is the place to go. There is a timelessness of the small walk up stand. It's tiny and right out of the past. You just instantly know that thousands of people over decades have also walked up to the same counter. I love that feeling. The burgers are classic. They're no frills, standard fair. You can taste the griddle that they're bring cooked on. It's that taste you always want to make when making burgers at your home, but just never will be able to replicate. Simply put, it's a perfect burger. The fries, on the other hand, are something right outta the modern era. They're loaded with toppings and flavor. You can taste the grease and richness with every bite. They're meant to be eaten slowly. But they're so tasty you can't help but inhale them at an unhealthy rate. If possible, I suggest sharing one order with someone else. I'm so glad I finally got out to this spot. I am going to try and visit as many times as I can before they unfortunately close down. At least I know there are other locations I can go to once this one closes their doors.
