"Lazing on a sunny afternoon In the summertime, in the…read moresummertime" (The Kinks) Spending a few sunny afternoon hours at the Westfield Farmer's Market was a great choice on a gorgeous summer day. They are open every Thursday from12PM-5PM between June 5th and October 16th, and this was our first visit. We found it on Court Street on the grounds of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement. You'll find it easily - just look for the trade show booths and tents. Parking is plentiful on any of the adjacent side streets. The market grounds are well spaced and were quite enjoyable to stroll around and browse. We saw vendors selling produce, flowers, dairy products, jams and jellies, raw honey, cider, meads, maple products, breads, baked goods, coffee, crafts, and lemonade. We even saw a pizza vendor with a mobile pizza oven! Oh, and there was live music too. We usually gravitate toward the food vendors, so yesterday was no exception. We bought a delicious Blondie from Sarah's Gluten Free Baked Goods, a decadent Cinnamon Roll from Sweet J J's, and an amazing container of mixed mushroom shapes and sizes from South Hadley's Livingstone Mycology. I've never seen such a rainbow of mushroom colors, including yellows and pinks. I can't wait to toss them in a frying pan with some oil, soy and Hoisin sauce, a spoon of Chili Crisp, and a handful of shrimp! Well done, Westfield Farmer's Market. When you enter the building, you'll find a really nice farm stand with tomatoes, squash, beans, peppers and fruit galore. But don't forget to explore the rest of the premises, because E. Cecci Farms is like an iceberg- you only see a very small part of it at first glance. There are greenhouses, and out-buildings, and tons of outdoor tables with flats of flowers and plants. There are hundreds of lawn and garden accesories, some of them look pretty bizarre, but the selection is amazing. I picked up five spheroid squashes and sliced them up and grilled them for dinner tonight. They were terrific. This is a very cool place indeed!

Why did we assume that? Well, their big on-line menu coupled with its reference to "restaurant" on their website sure had something to do with it. Here's a quote from their website: "Our Farm-to-Table Restaurant & Retail oasis is a celebration of community, sourcing all of the all-natural beef we serve from our farm, just minutes away!" So, we were pretty surprised to only see an ordering counter and freezer cases when we walked in. But we did get over our disappointment when we walked around their showroom where the walls were jam packed with meats and prepared foods in refrigerated and freezer cases. Steaks, roasts, soups, and prepared entrees were everywhere. The selection was pretty dazzling. We learned that they had a nice feature with their prepared entrees, namely buy one get a second for half off. We bought a two pretty big frozen trays of Chicken Marsala with rice and broccoli, and beef Stir Fry with veggies and noodles. I just put them on our kitchen scale, and each are between a pound and a pound and a half. One was $10.70 and the second was marked down to $5.35, so that's at least two (probably more) very nice dinners for around $8 each. One sour note was the unsmiling, unfriendly cold shoulder customer service experience. Barely a word was spoken by the woman who processed our order.

Also, the rumors of great pricing seem to be just that...rumors. I'm not seeing huge savings or "nicely done!" like the spammed ad campaigns are trying to tell me. Shifting back to more local stop and shop...at least the labels don't lie and I'm not accidentally picking up rotting fruit.
