This Aldi is clean inside and well stocked for the most part. Everything accept bags. It's hit or miss. Sometimes they have boxes. I used a few produce bags to put my smaller items in. The guy at the register was like do you need all those produce bags, and I jokingly told them if they had bags for groceries I wouldn't be trying to make lemonade outta these lemons. What else was I to do? Lol. They have a nice assortment of cheeses for the bougie in you!! Lol. Now anyone can afford the stinky cheeses. I like the dips as well. Your charcuterie board will be nice if you get what you need here, and very reasonably priced. I do enjoy they're little desserts as well. The meats at this location look good. Not every Aldi or Lidl has decent looking meat. So shout out to them for that. I do wish they had a bakery section like Lidl. But it's still a nice store. The employees are nice. Don't forget your quarter when you go, and be prepared to pay $.12 minimum depending on the bag you choose. All in all Aldi is a good store. I do wish they had a rewards program. I love Aldi overall gif it's great prices on everyday items, and on dons unique finds! Blue Bell ice cream may not be unique but you can count on getting very good flavors - even now the very seasonal eggnog flavor! And the trued and true classic flavors like cherry vanilla, pistachio, Rocky road, all yummy and creamy and taste so natural unlike other brands that are way too sweet. I also like the International frozen items that Aldi Carrie's - they vary but when they are available, I definitely stock up! Today I bought the frozen German cakes - apple walnut, almond... the other week I got the strawberry cream and chocolate hazelnut. All have light airy consistency and oh do good ingredients - like the chocolate ganache in the chocolate hazelnut cake is definitely Belgian chocolate! Don't be fooled, once you thaw these babies, you'll be hooked! I also got Asian frozen foods. Love love love the Fusia brand since they come in great portions (usually good for 2, think date night to impress with your culinary skills)...today I got the Shrimp fried rice and the Kung Pao Noodles with shrimp. Ok so there's a system to shopping at this grocery store! You pay a quarter to shop with a cart (you get it back when you return it) and stay focus to not be smitten by all the treats and candies! It was a bit hectic on the grand opening day as expected so I waited to go in the evening and it was still chaos. For some this store is familiar if you've shopped at the other locations but for me, NOT! I spent my 1.5 hours going in circles. There's products from Columbia, Germany, Honduras, to name a few. Also organic and Fair trade items and toys. Everything was reasonably priced. It's not a big grocery store but you can still find your dinner ingredients here. There's no bagger and not even free grocery bags! You have to pay .06 for paper and .10 for plastic and bag it yourself. Staff is friendly and very helpful but parking is difficult and confusing. read more

This grocery store is not for pretentious folks setting expectations for some high-end, anything. One will have to do a little bit of work. Aldi's claim is that it helps them keep the prices low. I think it does more than that. I personally like the quarter method as it teaches responsibility(among other things). Stand there long enough and one could make a killing in addition to being cart support. :) Store was well organized. Personally, I've seen some of the imported products at other discount grocer and merchandise stores(where there are baggers, plastic bags, and no quarter machines) that some folks wouldn't even stick their toe in. Now, IMO, the products look fancy since it's being sold in Aldi's. I did find some really good deals on my favorite things. Smoked salmon, goat cheese, bread. Grand Opening special was a 10lbs bag of potatoes for 0.99 and bag of onions for 0.29!! Service at check out was a pleasant experience. Cashier was very friendly and smiled. I came prepared with my own bags. I saw regular bags I believe they sell but, I definitely prefer bringing my own. Glad Aldi's is earth friendly conscience. I'll definitely come back. If one is expecting a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods...don't. Expect to bag your own products, expect to bring a quarter, expect to return your cart back where it belongs. Period. read more

That is insane. This location is very neatly organized, larger aisles and just overall cleaner than others I have been too. Aldi is very good for a few things. First and foremost I really like their meats. Their steaks are particularly excellent. Consistently cut and trimmed well, with nice marbeling. They also have a variety of cuts, nice ribeyes and strips, bit also skirt steak and more. I also really like the fact they wrap each individually, so I can out the exact steaks I want. They are generally thick cut as well, which is nice. They also have a good section. The selection is limited, but there is always a few interesting options at good prices. They do a good job seeking out non-traditional locations and/or grape blends. Produce is OK, but not outstanding. Their grocery section is nothing to write home about either. I really don't like having to deposit a quarter to get a shopping cart either, as I don't always have one on me. This is right next to my friend's house, so we're here on the weekends stocking up on chasers, squad meals, and wine. I do need to venture into the beer selection. How can I go wrong with German beer? The cashiers are always prepared to give everyone a speedy check out. The employees look generally happy here. Most of the time, people have left their quarters in their cart, so I play that pay-it-forward game as well. Groceries here are cheap, but some items are not consistently available. I plan my attack by checking specials online and building my meal prep around that. I do choose this place for taco nights though since there are tortillas, ground beef, taco seasoning, lettuce, and pico de gallo readily available. I also like venturing into the special aisles and seeing what I would need from there. It's clean and well-organized. The only issue is if you're trying to take a left turn out of their location. Hopefully you don't need to go back in that direction when it's busy on Kempsville. read more

My mother has long enjoyed shopping at Aldi back home in Ohio so I was excited to see them enter the Hampton Roads market and begin to gain a foothold. This particular Aldi location occupies the space formerly taken by a Golden Corral restaurant which was closed and subsequently razed. Being a completely new building this Aldi is neat and clean. The private lot affords ample parking and the lot is free of trash and debris. The first thing that strikes me when I enter the parking lot is the complete lack of grocery carts scattered all over the lot like you find at most other grocery stores. Owing to the 25 cent deposit requirement for using a cart (you get your quarter back when you return the cart) customers are incentivized to return their carts to the proper place. I absolutely love this concept and wish more store would adopt this model. Shopping at Aldi requires a different mindset than shopping at traditional supermarkets. You won't find many of your favorite brands at Aldi, most of the brand names are different than what you are used to but I've found most of their products to be of comparable quality to the brands you know. Prices for most items are considerably less than you would pay at Food Lion, Farm Fresh, Kroger or even WalMart though the variety of choices is less as well. That said, you should be able to find most of the basics you need. There is a decent produce section, a fair meat and seafood section though you won't find some of the cuts you expect in other stores. The dairy section is adequate but a little limited, you will still find all the basics. I have fallen into a habit of buying a take and bake pizza ($5.99 for a deluxe 16" pie) and popping it in the oven for dinner when I get home. The pizza is huge with a good amount of toppings and just an incredible value. It tastes great too. If you want you can easily add more toppings to it before you put it in your oven. The store layout is intuitive so shopping is not difficult. You do have to bag your own items and there are no free bags available though they do sell paper and plastic bags as well as large reusable totes and there are generally some empty boxes available for the taking. In all my visits staffing has been adequate to afford a fairly speedy checkout process. It is also not difficult to find a store employee if you have a question about a product or help finding something. All the employees I have encountered have been very polite and friendly as well as knowledgeable. If you don't relish the idea of carting all your items then packing them in your vehicle there is a counter in the front of the store where you may bag or box your items before exiting the store. Aldi may not be for everyone but my wife and I truly enjoy the great savings and the pleasant shopping experience we find at Aldi. read more

This depends what you're used to, and what you expect from a grocery store. I personally hated this shopping experience. 1) first impression, carts locked up, and you need a quarter to take one? Stupid. Just a bad first impression. What if I don't have a quarter? You might say it keeps the parking lot clear of carts? It's a small lot, it wouldn't matter, and since there's no cart corral, people would be inclined to put carts back anyway. It's petty and awkward and inconvenient. 2) the store is kind of like a mini Sam's club. Things are kind of stored on shelves with little rhyme nor reason. There's not much variety. You can find some good deals but honestly, I'd say maybe half of the things were the same price as Kroger down the road (Kroger no brand is pretty cheap). Except Kroger has huge, organized layouts with everything you could want plus a Starbucks and bakery, deli, and free carts waiting in a corral not far from your car. 3) checkout was awkward. We didn't use a cart, we used recyclable bags that we carried. The checkout barely bagged anything and grabbed an extra cart and piled our stuff in there loose. It was weird, awkward, inconvenient. Overall this place had one good thing. Cheap wine that was decent. But other than that, this place was crap. Like walking into a small mom and pop grocery that had no organisation or convenience. It's good for going to grab a few items or maybe some fresh produce on the way home from work. But it's not an all in one shop for the week kind of store. At least not in my opinion. read more

I am happy to see that there is an Aldi that I am willing to drive to that is not too far. It was a nostalgic feeling being back in an Aldi after living in Europe, but this review won't be bias. Stock: Before I begin, don't expect to be able to check off your while shopping list here - although it may be possible. They have a good selection to choose from. The produce is good, but I would consider not getting something like salad if you don't plan on consuming it all within 5 days. The meat selection is nice, but I think there are some cuts you won't be able to find here. To the vegetarians, I admittedly forgot to look out for you all but am sure there is a good selection for you! Also, the frozen section does provide a good variety. They do have clothes and appliances there, but there might be only a few on the shelf - so, you might not find what your friend found two days ago. Speaking of the shelves, they stock differently than most stores around. But food is stocked better than clothes and appliances. Cost: This is a store where you won't find brand names. So, don't walk in expecting to get Doritos, Tysons, etc. Most, if not, all items are off brand which is the ways they keep their costs low. Items are relatively low, and it helps for those who wish to tighten their budgets, or who are working with a low budget. Prices are nice and cheap. Ambience: Again, they stock the shelves differently and they have their own style. For some, it may be considered a little disorganized. I think it is well kept, clean, easy to find items, and it was a pleasant experience shopping there. Staff seemed friendly, but my interaction was minimal. Come check out Aldi!! While some folks will find themselves confused at this German-style grocery store, don't let it put you off. It has a lot in common with the ever-popular Trader Joe's (there's an interesting history there, google it). A lot of their ideas are "European" but relatively simple... in fact, that's the entire idea. They save a lot of money for the customers by curbing some American expectations and luxuries... A few things that they DO NOT have here that may confuse you are: **Employees to go get carts (which is why you pay a quarter to buy a cart and get it back when you return it). **Free grocery bags (you pay $0.06 for paper and $0.10 for plastic... This not only reduces costs for customers overall, but it is environmentally sound). **Someone to bag your groceries for you (once again, when you shop here and bag your own groceries, you are saving money because there are not extra employees to do work for you that can easily be done yourself) I encourage you to check out the company's website... There's a lot of worthwhile information and you can find even more on third-party websites, including their history and their relation to Trader Joe's. There are some serious savings to be had here on high-quality products (the store brands), and while it might be a bit confusing at first, if you learn to enjoy it you can not only save quite a bit of money but you'll adapt relatively quickly! This experience was great we got like 20 items for only 11.15 and they have great deals mangoes are on sale 49 cents each are the same price they have amazing off brands like water for 1.69 a pack as opposed to other stores like food lion for 2.69 a pack and you get a few more bottles. Also the staff here are very friendly and they won't have a bad attitude if you ask them for assistance. Only downside is they only have one or two lanes open at all times which I'm told is standard for all Aldis in order to keep the cost down. So you have to choose what time to come for faster service. If you come after 3 on the week day be prepared to wait. There have been times I've found moldy or lackluster produce even in the prepackaged containers so be mindful and check. A few of my staple items I shop here for are the tortillas which are normally less than $1, spices because I can get the organic kind cheaper than the bigger stores, some produce not all it depends if they are on sale that week, canned goods and the household aisle they always have something I need on sale. You could feed a family of four for less than $10 a meal. Because of that I would humbly accept the small penance of waiting in line in order to save money. read more

I wrote a review for Lidl but went to an Aldi on the same day so why not put my 2¢ as well? So Aldi and I have a love/hate relationship. I used to live in Germany and would grab things from the local Aldi about once a week. When I came back to the states, I went ONE time and it was terrible. Nothing interesting, lots of low quality food and depressing stores. This was circa 2004. Anyway they moved in to my local area as a pre-emptive strike against Lidl and I gave them another shot. I am glad that I did. Aldi makes you put a quarter deposit in the cart (which you get back) and if you are running low, they give you one at any register. The store is small but laid out well. Produce has improved and is usually cheap- just be prepared to use it in a short period of time. They have lots of things that are "in" items (glutten free, pita chips, rice chips, sparkling water) but on off labels and lower prices. Rarely have I had something that was awful and if you do, you can take it back and get double money back. They do not have the selection of Trader Joe's but one suspects that they have the same suppliers for some items as they are in both stores (the sour cherries for example). The meats are cheap but don't taste like it. I went to Lidl which just opened to check it out and was not really impressed. Aldi is smaller but somehow has a wider selection in my opinion. Even when it's packed, it is still nowhere near as annoying as Tader Joe's. I guess one thing that sets Aldi way apart from the other places is that the staff is always pretty friendly to me. They always seem busy but willing to give you a quarter or a $5 off for $30 coupon that they regularly seem to have. It's no-frills but the staff is anything but. I don't know how they do it (less opening hours? more pay?) but the people here are as nice as they are at Chic-Fil-A. I am not a big fan of CfA but I will say their service is usually impeccable which is not typical in this day and age- or at least in this area. Same goes for Aldi. My gripes would be that the selection can be a bit limited and it really sucks when you get attached to an item and then it is GONE. This happens but then sporadically it will pop back up. Variety is the spice of life though so no use crying over it. Could I do all my food shopping here? No. Especially not produce. But I have a small circuit of places I hit and this is one of them. read more

I stopped in Aldi today in hopes of getting in and out quickly but both lines were long. They usually open another line temporarily, perhaps it's changed with the pandemic. This is the Aldi I used to frequent most because it's centrally located. Kempsville Road just before Indian River and Ferrell Parkway. The produce is by far the best thing at any Aldi. I think most people know that you bring your own bags or purchase them there. The quarter for each cart is refunded when you return the cart of course. They don't carry name brands and I disagree that their brands are just a good as the name brands. I still like the store and would recommend it because of their fresh fruit and veggies, desserts section with breads, inexpensive eggs, milk and O.J. They also have inexpensive wines but none I'd recommend. I usually make sure to get their fresh spinach...they also have organic spinach in the clear boxes. The avocados are usually a good deal but not today...small and discolored. The bottled water is also fairly priced. During the pandemic they were limited to 2 gallons per person but it's September and my guess is the water shortages and toilet paper hoarding has ended. I only got one gallon but didn't notice any signs indicating limitations. I also like their "Big Dipper" tortilla chips. It's another one of those places that you should just walk around (when time permits) because you might find a bargain. read more

Friendly staff all the store. Trying to find something? They seem to detect your looking for something. We find their seafood is always fresh and make it a point to see what they have to offer. Not too long ago, they had Mediterranean Sea bass or better knot as bronzini or bronzino. Stuff is farm raised in Turkey if I'm not mistaken but the fillets tasted like they were cleaned that day. Nice sweet smell indicates the freshness. Even their veggies are nicely packaged. What I do like is we get their weekly flyer unlike the other German grocery stopped sending them to us, so we stopped frequenting them. I just wish that the flat breads would appear more often and I'm talking about the ones from Europe read more

I like the store and it's prices but yesterday I was double charged for a $10 item and didn't notice it until I got home. To my surprise the store phone number is not on the receipt. It is also not on the web site. In fact, it is nowhere to be found. I had to go to the web site for aldis.us and let them know via the "contact us" link. I'm waiting to hear back. It would be simpler for me to just return to the store and I may end up having to do just that but it is a 25 mile round trip. My big question is, why would a company choose not to put their telephone number on their customers receipts? UPDATE.. I did not hear back from the "contact us" link on their site so I made the drive back to the store today. I now know why they don't publish their phone number. It's because the stores have no office or service counter. It's just the store itself and the cashiers. With that said, a cashier reviewed my receipt and made the refund. Went to another store and they were sold out on top of not being as helpful as I'd hoped. Got to this location and not only did they have what I was searching for but the employees there were friendly and went out of their way to help me. First time visiting an Aldi store. I was pretty impressed. Don't expect a fancy store like Whole Foods but everything was clean and organized. Prices were great on most items, selection was a bit limited but I was okay with that. Walked out with a weeks worth of food for the whole family for $60. Bring your own bags if you have any. Store was packed and parking lot is not huge so that's that but it wasn't a big deal to me. I will definitely be returning for produce, meats, and snacks at Aldi. read more

I went to Aldi for the first time yesterday. The Yelp reviews prepared me to bring a quarter to use a cart and my own bags. That was the best part of my trip because it prevented customers from leaving carts in between cars and wasting plastic bags. But I was disappointed that there was a limited selection of organic and non-GMO items. There was an abundance of certain items such as trail mix and chips, but not my essentials. I would still have to go to a second store to purchase needed groceries. It was also difficult maneuvering through the narrow aisles with big carts. I had to turn around a couple times instead of waiting for customers to move. I'm not sure what people find so great about this place. I first found the whole cart process a huge pain in the ass. Is cart theft so costly to stores that I have to have a quarter and fuss with the jammed AF chains? Annoyingly, there's no baskets if you need a little or hate the cart process. I think I could have enjoyed the selection more on my first visit to an Aldi than coming in sour after putzing with the carts. I didn't find enough exotic or surprises to really thrill me and there was no prepared food, which I was lead to believe they had. After I thought I couldn't get madder, the cashier really made it worse. the cashiers sit, which is nice on their feet, I guess, shouldn't be a bother. but the cashier I visited made it look so slovenly and she had a poor attitude. I didn't know aldi was bag free or bag your own. I guess I made a mistake of handing her the bag and saying I had brought my own. she handed it back to me while snottily informing me I had to bag myself. problem being... she was scanning my stuff and putting it in a cart down there, yet the previous customer was still there bagging her stuff! how do they make sure no one takes another person's stuff?! plus, I had to wait for the previous customer to finish. I felt it was rude to start my order when the other lady was doing her thing. so then mine was done and I took the time to bag... before I paid, cause I didn't want the next persons stuff put in with mine. the card swiper machine is not intuitive and I accidently canceled my sale, since I hit the wrong button for credit and I got no answer from the rude cashier. had to go through the process again and more pointedly asked her how does it process for credit. most places put a sticker if the machine doesn't prompt you. ultimately, this place was a waste of my time. I don't want to come back here to try new things when the staff is crap and the cart process is too fussy. read more

CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS before leaving parking lot or better yet the store. Twice I have been charged incorrect amounts on purchases. The clerk said there is no way I can know what the sale ad or price that was a week ago. The second time I caught it and they refunded the incorrect difference(off by a dime) and I heard the manager tell the stocker to change to tag on display to the higher price. There were other shoppers who had that same item in their carts so they were probably burned at check out if they weren't paying attention. I doubt I will continue shopping there.
