They are taking the necessary precautions to keep there customers safe. They have the one way aisles and the six feet distance marks to check out. They are really stocked with products to get all of what you need.

This area of town has been what is referred to as a food desert. The people of the community have been trying for over ten years to get a decent grocer to come in. The other chains considered the neighborhood too high a risk so they passed on various sites that were offered to them. As of February however, the neighborhood now has an Aldi. I see this as a two-fold blessing. Now the people of the community have a top notch grocer, but also one that is substantially more affordable than the majority of those found in the city proper and the suburbs. This Aldi is always extraordinarily clean, well maintained and well lit. The produce, meats, dairy and baked goods are always fresh and of high quality. The staff is exceptionally helpful and even when the lines get long the checkers are lightning fast. My partner and I have switched to doing the vast majority of our grocery shopping here and I don't see us looking back any time soon. Very glad that Aldi came into this neighborhood.

Fantastic you-pick farm!…read more I wanted to pick some sort of fruit while I was running around the countryside near Lexington. Yelp found Fahrmeier's Farm and a quick visit to their website informed me that blackberry season had just opened! Well who doesn't like blackberries? So off we go, ready to go pick some fruit on the way to the Battle of Lexington State Historic Park. Super friendly girl came out to greet us and escorted us to a row of blackberries that she said were especially delicious. She showed us how to pick them, twist not pull, and then off we were! These blackberries were the largest berries I have ever seen! A few were as long as my thumb. They were bursting with sweet juiciness. I couldn't help eating one or two during the picking process, but they all looked so good. I'm pretty sure I picked all of the best ones... lol... ok not really, but had a whole tray at the end of going down one row and back up the other side. All those berries cost less than $20 too! I think the total was like $17 and change for about 4-5 lbs at $3.99/lb. Everyone in the little market was friendly and they had a few things for sale there from their farm, fresh eggs, ginormous tomatoes (seriously, huge, like 3-4 lbs) and various other things including cold drinks. You end up with an open tray of berries in a bag that only covers half, so be careful driving with them. But I had the best time being a city gal in the country and seeing cute goats and birds flying around. I had some berries on my cereal this morning and omg so delicious - seriously the best I've ever had. My bf doesn't think I can eat all the ones I picked. Watch me.

Great bargains can be had here, but you can also spend money on produce that you will be throwing away very quickly after purchase if not inspected thoroughly and used ASAP. Make sure to carefully inspect the ripeness / color / texture / firmness of every object and open those packages of berries; there can be hidden mold on many products. There is a reason things are marked down so cheap; preparing a dinner for that evening - go for it. Stocking up for the week - think twice. My favorite bargains are when avocados are 4 / $1 or flats of bananas are $3. A great way to overindulge on some tasty guacamole (get the seasoning next door) or a cheap healthy treat for the office staff. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd visit daily and knock down my grocery bill by 75%.

Now, nessled on about 4 acres, they grow a variety of vegetables and flowers with no irrigation, using sustainable methods (live mulch (i.e., weeds) to shade the crops and renew the soil). They also use built environmental methods to extend the growing season of certain non-native plants, and have even applied for and received grants from the USDA (the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program) to experiment growing ginger in the midwest (local ginger!!!) and to experiment growing bitter melon indoors. The Huns already have an incredible assortment of herbs and vegetables. On last count at the KC Farmer's Market, I saw 3 varieties of basil, 2 types of parsley, bitter melon, of which the leaves and stems you can make green tea (don't give the tea to children or people prone to low blood sugar blackouts), perslin (misspelled), and onions. At other times, there were flowers, heirloom tomatoes, zuchinni, potatoes, and green (and purple) beans. The best part is, everything is extremely cheap, bunches are mostly $1 each. Go there, say hi, and enjoy the stir fry. UPDATE: Last weekend, early August 2008, the Huns had an early batch of ginger--kansas grown ginger? you ask. Yep, it's for real. As far as I know, it's the only midwest-grown ginger being grown around.
