Eno River Farm - Banana ice cream was awesome

Eno River Farm

I'm not sure if it's considered the off-season right now, but when we went, unfortunately, there…read morewas no picking to be had. So there's not really too much to do other than sit on some rocking chairs & eat some ice cream (which we did enjoy doing.) I didn't even realize that there was a trail out there until after we had already left and I'm seeing other people's reviews so they may need to put up signs for that in the store area. I feel like the inside is really just ice cream, coffee, and a small little nursery area. Not sure if the drive out there was really worth it for the 15 to 20 minutes we spent out there. The banana ice cream was really awesome though and all of the employees there were very helpful and nice. Definitely a place that you go to when there's an actual event unfortunately we just missed the fall wreath making event Seems like people bring their kids out there to run around the outdoor area. Not sure if the prices of the ice cream or the plants was necessarily great, but it's a smaller owned business I'm sure so it tracks

Great farm with short trail and unique wood troll figurines…read more They have a small garden shop. The staff was friendly and quick to service. They make homemade icecream and sorbet year round. Also they serve coffees and lattes. There is some picnic tables around to enjoy coffee and icecream with a beautiful view of the farm. I tried the coffee leche icecream and the strawberry and green apple cider sorbet. There all great flavors.

We have enjoyed going to firefly farm a few times now during this last year, both for Halloween and…read morefor picking wildflowers! Positives-lots of land! Their huge swing is amazing and a highlight for kids! The staff is also very kind. We have visited their haunted house (eclectic, great for younger kids) and for their flowers in the spring and both have been empty (which in my mind is good). You can easily picnic and have all the space you want to yourselves Negatives-there isn't a lot going on. If you prefer places with a lot of activities this is not the place for you

Firefly Farms is a small farm in Hillsborough, NC. They primarily sell produce but do have some…read moreflowers that you can pick by appointment when the farm is open. When you arrive at the farm, follow the gravel driveway back to the barn as that is where the designated parking is at. Then if you are picking flowers, you check in and are provided a grocery store type basket and a pair of scissors. The basket was great as it was light and had two handles. It was also nice that scissors were provided as I've been forgetful in the past and left them at home before. Or if you had ordered produce you can pick that up under the tent. The website is really easy to navigate and make your purchase. The driveway that you drove up, provides a lovely walk back down to where the flowers are at. There were some animals along the way too! There are signs up in the areas that you are allowed to pick flowers. When you finished finding flowers in the various areas, you walk back up to the barn and the flowers are wrapped and put into a mason jar vase. Also tips are given for caring for the flowers. I really enjoyed my outing to the farm and the reservation system made it so easy to social distance as there were not too many of us there at once. The staff was beyond friendly and made me feel welcomed.

Whitted Bowers Farm

This review is only reflective of the day that we went, so maybe it could be better?…read more My friends and I had been super excited to go strawberry-picking, and Whitted Bowers was one of the farms we were wavering between (the other was DJ's Berry Patch, haven't been yet). However, we were a little disappointed because even though the pick-your-own season had only opened 3 days before, the fields were pretty much picked clean of the ripe, juicy berries we had been imagining. In hindsight, we should have called ahead to ask about the selection. That said, it was a very peaceful farm with a few barefoot kids, braying goats, and rows and rows of standard and "experimental" strawberries. We still had fun and picked a decent amount of almost ripe berries (good enough for baking!) at $2.50/pound. And the few ripe berries we did get were yums. The honor system is nice, so make sure you bring cash!

In college, I took a Cosmo mag quiz that was supposed to measure one's relationship faithfulness…read more One of the questions asked if you came upon a field of luscious, red strawberries whether you would stop and eat any. If Cosmo is to be believed, today's gluttonous visit to Whitted Bowers (picture me with red juice dripped onto my shirt-front, scooping up berries into my mouth as much as into my bucket) is a clear indication that Phil should watch his back. Down a dirt road, there are about 50 rows of organic strawberries, labeled and divided into three sections. The first section (apparently "delicacies") was recently out-of-season, the second type was ripe for the picking, and the third was also available (supposedly best paired with chocolate, so I'm guessing they are tarter). The farm provides different sizes of baskets for picking, and you weigh the total, subtract the weight of the basket, and pour into your own container to take home. Out there among kids in wellies, barefoot grown-ups, and a couple of visitors' dogs roaming freely, we filled nearly a whole bucket. The cost is $3.00/lb for less than 20lbs, and $2.50/lb for more than 20. This seemed a little steep; with some hunting, we found berries in good condition, but the patches were a little picked over. Of course, the season is nearly over -- the farm expects to close the you-pick option on 5/18, stating that the season started and will end earlier than usual this year. I thought the coolest thing about this place is the honor system they do payment on. We weighed our berries, pulled out our cash, and plopped it in the box they had out on the table. These days, you don't see that kind of trust very often, and being out in their bucolic fields under blue skies ... well ... it was nice to spend a moment or two in a time gone by!
