I like Aldi more then DH does. I think it has a fairly good selection of most things we typically buy. What makes Aldi an Aldi is that instead of 47 different types of crackers to choose from, you get 4. So prices are great. The brands I have tried from Aldi have all been good. So, first of all, this is my go to store for almost everything. I love it. I was skeptical at first, but after going once or twice and I saw the tremendous savings, I seldom go anywhere else. I buy all my household staples here, even my paper products. When I saw you had to "rent" your carts for a quarter-I was initially bemused. However, when I saw that the parking lot was clear, no carts denting cars or blocking spaces-I was sold. Further, because you take your cart back to the corral and get your quarter back, the money they would pay someone to do that job equals savings in your pocket! The same holds true with their stocking method. No, it's not a fancy or pretty as some of the upscale grocers, but the savings passes to the customer! I have zero problem with savings money! Their snack, cracker, and chip brands are better than Nabisco, Frito-lay and Keebler in my estimation. The Winking Owl wine is under $3!! And packing your own groceries? Yes please! I usually stand at the end of the conveyor belt and watch in horror as some nitwit packer puts a crate of clementines on top of my bread. It's happened! Or some store clerks put one item in each bag?! Who trained these folks? So, I enjoy packing things my way! And I do like bringing my reusable cloth or plastic bags, they hold so much more that those thin cheap plastics ones at most stores. The cashiers are lightning fast and checkout is a breeze! I will say, I go elsewhere to get me pet supplies. I'd love it if they carried Fancy Feast. But you can't have everything right? When you can spend $40.00 for the same items that would cost you $80.00 elsewhere, Aldi's just makes cents! My fav store! read more

Maybe I should give it some more time? I'll check back in a few weeks to see if my opinion has changed. I was so excited to go here since I love a good bargain. The sale paper had a ton of stuff I planned to buy. I even rolled up in there with all of my eco-friendly grocery bags. I bought just a few items since most of the items advertised in the sale paper were not in the store. Don't plan on going there for the produce as the selection is very very very very small if any at all! I would have loved for the produce section to be bigger and then they could get rid of the cleaning/paper products aisle since I didn't see anyone buying anything from that area. read more

I absolutely LOVE new and fun grocery stores that are not your typical "chain" grocery store. Aldi actually owns Trader Joes and you'll see some of that influence in this store. Aldi is a discount super market store that intends to sell only their most popular products to save people time and money. They're known for selling similar items offered at other stores but for cheaper. I consider this place a cross between a neighborhood Walmart and a trader joes. It's about the size of a typical CVS so it's relatively small. I'll reiterate some points some other reviews have said: you need to insert a quarter into the shopping cart to use but you get it back when you return the cart. There is only ONE entrance into the entire store that leads you down one aisle and that aisle could get congested very easily because everyone has to pass through there. All of their departments are relatively small: meat, product, frozen, dairy, dry goods, home goods, etc. But if all you need are the basic essentials for your weekly shopping, I think this place will meet your needs. The prices are affordable and are lower than most of its competitors even Wal Mart for some items. About 90% of the brands I do not recognize and I shop at several different grocery stores around RVA. They carry a lot of their own brands so if you're very strict on product ingredients and allergens, this may not be the place for you.. I think this place so far is you get what you pay for. The quality is just okay, but you're saving a good amount of money. I may go back for some items but I won't be shopping just here for my weekly groceries. It is precisely what it is supposed to be, in that your groceries are cheaper. Your groceries are also often unavailable if you wanted a specific type of food, the quality is not always tops, and the shopping experience is... lacking. So I'm unlikely to come back unless I run into budgeting difficulties, like woah and somehow find myself entirely unable to figure out how to shop sales at Food Lion and Fresh to Frozen. read more

European budget shopping at it's best! Agreed w/ first reviewer re: entrance cluster F, but compared to saving on groceries, I honestly don't give a crap. Having shopped Aldi in 'Bama, I knew to bring my own bags, a quarter deposit for the cart and either cash or my debit card. Once Richmonders adjust, they will realize how much of a gem Aldi is to the RVA grocery scene. I'll drop some of the deals I found: -decent organic, gluten free and recycled paper productions selection and CHEAP -fair trade coffee for 3.99/bag -their store brand milk doesn't have Growth hormones in it -produce selection was pretty good for a bargain store -Most folks could probably do 50- 80% of their shopping here but expect to stop somewhere else for speciality or diet specific items. before walking in remember this: -don't shop here if you have to have brand X grocery item. If you don't care what the box says but just want food, this is your place to shop. -BYO bags or grab boxes off the shelves. Or be a sucker & pay 5-10 cents per bag. -bring a quarter. Pop it in the handle of the cart and the chain holding it pops out & you're ready to roll. To Reverse the process, put the chain back in the handle & get your quarter back. Easy peasy, it doesn't "cost" anything, you just leave a deposit -prepare yourself to hear people gripe like small children. If only Kraft brand cheese doesn't make your IBS flare up, shop somewhere else. Also be prepared to bag your own groceries once they ring you up. Since I'm a grocery store geek I was stoked when I learned that ALDI was opening stores in the RVA. For years I'd heard people rave about its low prices, and one of the new stores was opening about three minutes from where one of my sisters-in-law live, so I had to go check it out. Can you say "letdown"? I knew that you could. Yes, it's cheap. Chicken was $.95/pound, ground beef $1.99/pound, but the chickens were tiny and the beef dubious-looking. The dubious appearance extended to the scanty produce section. Since it's a European chain the store is much smaller than your average supermarket, which is not a bad thing--think of Trader Joe's, which ALDI also owns. However, if a store is that small its inventory better be top notch, not European knockoffs of American brands. Like Trader Joe's, if you're into frozen and boxed foods you'll get some deals at ALDI. For fresh foods, it's not worth it. read more

The overall experience might improve here as Richmonders become better acquainted with how this store works. Upon entering, all customers are forced to walk through the same aisle because of how the store is set up. On a busy day like today, this means that every person needing an item from the first aisle will also occupy the space for people just trying to get to the other sections. This serves no purpose other than forcing customers to see every item--regardless of whether they want to. The main attraction is the prices. Aldi's store brand seems to be about .50 to $1.00 less than comparable items in Wal-Mart. As of today, most customers are not aware of the .25 cart rental, inability to use credit cards, and the Costco/Sam's Club approach to bagging. This is most evident when overhearing conversations at the register. I personally heard things like: "This is my first and last Aldi experience!" "Did you know you have to pay to use a cart?!" "Are they even going to have bags?" "But I always run my card as credit.." "The baskets are locked together." Like I said. People's perceptions and understanding of this place might improve with time. I think Aldi should at least reconsider that entrance layout though. read more

I'd rate zero stars if possible. The store has an awful smell which made me sick to my stomach. If you're looking for the brands that you purchase at the local supermarkets, then this isn't the place for you. Think back to the foods with the white label and black lettering. This is what's sold here. The fresh fruits aren't fresh. They look like they're about to rot. You need a case quarter to place in the shopping cart to use a cart for shopping. When you return the cart, then you get your quarter back. I remember Aldi from New Jersey when I lived there. The only thing that's changed is the location. Most of their locations are in the poorer neighborhoods, hence the reason for the quarter to use a shopping cart. Otherwise, the patrons would take the carts home etc. Don't forget to bring your own bags as you'll also need to bag your own groceries. read more

This is one store where you should check the circular before shopping there because their items change weekly and you never know what they will have in the store. They carry a lot of staples, along with a lot of products that look the same as Trader Joe's (pizza dough, pizza sauce, hummus, chocolates, etc.) products. That alone is a win because now can make less trips to Short Pump for TJ's products. In addition to staples, they have weekly specials that are super cool. For instance, this week they're featuring products from Germany, so if you're looking for spaetzle, now is your chance to grab some at a low price. They also have a small selection of clothing, yoga mats, outdoor lights, etc. Bottom line is you can find cool stuff at low prices as long as you come with an open mind. If you are looking for a few items, this could be the place for you. Usually when I stop by Aldi, I'm buying snacks. They have a pretty decent snack aisle with lots of choices of brands we know and some we don't. Don't let that fool you though, the less known brands are just as good. Their prices are mostly less than Kroger or Walmart and the best part is you don't have to wrestle with the crowds unlike either of the other stores. The size of Aldi is just right and now terribly large so you can pop in and out in a decent amount of time. Like what a lot of people said, don't expect a huge selection of fresh produce. They have the usual potato, tomato, onions but if you are looking for FRESH produce, you are better off looking somewhere else. read more

Yes, you need a quarter for the cart, but you can get the quarter back when you return it. To be honest, I just come here for snacks. They have a pretty good selection of snacks: chips, cookies, nuts, chocolates, granola, and biscuits for a really great price. They do also have produce, meat, pizza, and other frozen goods, but all the ones I've checked out look questionable. In the middle of the store, there are home decor items, toys, garden tools, and other knick knacks. I appreciate that the prices are cheaper, but the quality is lacking. At the end, you have to bag your own groceries. For now, I'll just stick to my $1.99 chocolate biscuits. read more

This store doesn't even deserve a star. Their products mold less than a month after purchasing because they are sealed properly even though they don't expire till April 2017. Please don't go the cheap way out and go to this store because you will loose in the long run with molded cheap products. I will never go to a Aldi again. Not impressed, I finally stopped in a few days ago for the first time. It's so basic it reminds me of some old military PX from WW2. In many ways I found the entire shopping experience very depressing. I bought a few snacks and a bag of frozen burgers, the burgers were not very good but I guess you get what you pay for because they were cheap in price. I would never go out of my way to shop here again or even attempt to do my weekly shopping in one of these depressing low cost, low quality places. read more

Although it may not have everything you actually need, this store is absolutely perfect for what you need! Growing up in New Jersey where it was normal to pay 25 cents for a cart, I don't find it a big deal. You probably have a quarter in your car anyway! Don't complain because you get it back, so what's the big deal? Besides that, instead of spending $120 on basic groceries at Kroger or Martin's, I can spend $60 or $70. Even though it may not be the brand name, it is nearly the same. The quality of the food is nearly the same and the milk has no growth hormones which is great. Upon checking out, you may need to buy paper bags if you didn't bring your reusable bags. People think of it as stupid. No, it's not. It's called being eco-friendly. Towards the end, you have to bag your own items. Some hate this idea; some love this idea. I like it because I can use my bags and bag my own items. I've been excited about this Aldi location for quite a while now because I always enjoyed the one where I grew up. So first things first, do you have to insert a quarter to use a cart? YES, you do. Do you get your quarter back when you return the cart? YES, you do. Pretty smart if you ask me since it ensures that no one removes carts from the parking lot and that they are returned to the proper place. So, remember to have a quarter on hand and you won't have any problems. Next, are all of their products off brand? No, but the majority are. I was able to get Kraft cheese there and several other name brand products. I do not mind buying off brand from Aldi because I've found the quality to always be just as good as regular, household name brands. My favorite thing about Aldi is the cheap produce. This week, blackberries were 89 cents per pack. Where else can you get such a deal? Nowhere. The store was super clean and the cashier was friendly. Lastly, you need to take reusable grocery bags or take boxes. Sometimes they have boxes on site for you to pack your groceries in, but often these will not hold up so it is best to come prepared. It may not be a great store for your only shopping trip, but is great for some items. The Tandil dryer sheets are fantastic- better than name brands. The baked goods and cookies are dynamite. I see no different than leading brands. My husband loves their ice cream products too. If you're on a diet, you'll need to stay away from their hazlenut products- super yummy. As far as produce, we picked what looked best and could not complain about the fresh pineapple that was half the price at our usual chain market. Definitely worth a swing by trip, if you have one close to your normal driving route. read more

I sometimes shop at Aldie's. Some of there products are good quality. The loaf of wheat bread I recently purchased was not good at all. It was tough and dry and tasted like cardboard, but that's just one product. The store has a funny smell, but it is an alright store when you just need to pick something up "on your way". read more
