Aldi and Trader Joe's are not the same company but share a common origin. They are operated as separate entities by two branches of the German Albrecht family, following a split in the 1960s. My German husband was ecstatic when Aldi opened in OC, they have 2 stores, in FV and in GG. When it 1st opened there was a section w a lot of German wursts, strudel and some frozen food directly from Germany and at a discount from Traders Joe. Aldi now advertises daily on Foxnews, it is well known and is flourishing but unfortunately the German section is gone, occasionally they would have spaetle , strudel but we don't see any wurst, my husband has to go to Old World village for all the German cold cuts. It is true everything is cheaper at Aldi, the eggs were insanely cheap, $1.29 to $1.39 per carton. Bananas we buy weekly, I have 3 banana trees but mine are the VN varieties I used to love but now I give most to my neighbors, I prefer the Chiquita Bananas. Ice cream Ben and jerry and Hagen Daz were always on sale. I recently bought a pair of real leather sheepskin slippers for $14.95 , I really don't know how they can sell everything so cheap. They also stock table cloths, plastic ones you can clean them, I have so many beautiful table cloths but who has time to wash them? they used to sell them in Bed, bath and beyond but they are nowhere to be found after BBB went out of business. To be clear, they don't have everything like in a normal supermarket but what they have nobody can sell cheaper, their produce dept was always well stocked and fresh w an amazing discount. Its a blessing in this environment to have a place to shop and not having to get a mortgage to pay for your groceries!! read more

There's just one item on that one thing and it's pretty fresh. I love that the carts you have to change a quarter for because it makes people bring their carts back which saves a little bit more time. This is the first Aldi that I have been to in a long time let alone in Southern California. From what I remember about the Aldi's in Chicago is that was one of your last choice supermarkets. This particular location is clean as most of the businesses are in Huntington Beach. As far as groceries, they have reasonable prices for high quality food. The only problem it seems to be an outlet of sorts because they never have the same products. There wasn't much of a sales team.& there was always only one cashier on. Also, you have to bag your own groceries which is also why they have decent prices. Definitely recommend. read more

All Aldi locations are now becoming one of our core stores to get a lot of grocery staples, week in and week out. Aldi's has been around a long time nation wide in the US, and growing up in Illinois, my mom would stop in very infrequently, mostly when there was time and she wanted to see what was on sale (cause prices could be very, very low). But we realized pretty quickly we couldn't do our main grocery shopping there because non-store brand products would disappear without notice, and many staples would be sold out and not restocked...plus the workers were not motivated...checking out took a long time. Trader Joe's came into our area much much later, and I initially didn't go cause of the Aldi relationship. But kept hearing good things about it (and they kept sending us their newsletter-- Fearless Flyer), and realized it was really, really good in a lot of respects (ok...no more about TJ...I know this is a Aldi review) After changing dentists, the new office was right next to a Aldi's. It was one of the older Aldi's, and still had much of the Aldi experience (lend a quarter for a cart, bag your own groceries, long checkout lines, only cash or debit), but was much better stocked and a lot more helpful employees. And there are certain food items that are great at Aldi, at lowest prices. A brand new Aldi opened close to us in Long Beach, and it's very modern and well stocked. It now even accepts Credit Card and has self-checkout lines so checkout can be very quick. Aldi has now become a grocery store where we will stop in if we see it on the way, even to pick up a few things. So on the Friday before Christmas, we were headed back home from Orange County and decided to see if we get the last things for our hosted Christmas Party. The parking lot is large and plenty was available (the self service cart return to get back your quarter really works...you just don't see grocery carts anywhere in the parking area...which is a pet peeve of my wife at other stores). This Aldi in Fountain Valley reminds me of the newest setup: one large room where you can immediately see (or guess correctly) where everything is. I like the gourmet cheese section at Aldi, and you can make a mean charcuterie board with the limited selection but value priced selection of jamon...we picked up some packages. And it accepts credit, and has self checkout. One thing to avoid at Aldi is fresh meat...it's prepackaged outside (similar to Trader Joe's and Target) and there are rare sales on it, so you will constantly pay the similar regular prices to other stores most of the time. When there is a sale, it is often out of stock. And the selection is very limited. At the center of each store, located are chest refrigs and freezers and you never really know what to expect. During the holiday season, it was spiraled ham (we picked up one more) and frozen turkeys (all out this close to Christmas). Nothing too cool this time, but there is always next time. read more

Ok... so here goes the real post: So after my boyfriend broke up with me at Aldi about a year ago, I have hated Aldi ever since. For the longest time, everything about Aldi reminded me of him. The huge blue and white letters, the Aldi's seasonal & special refrigerated items, the random "for your home" sections, the smell, the taste... it all brought back horrific memories of him breaking up with in the the middle of the pasta aisle. It was the worst day of my life. And no one even stopped to help me as they walked by and saw "Mr. Not-So-Wonderful" break my heart and crush my soul. It's been almost a year now and therapy 3 times a week. I am on my path to a better future. I'm stronger now. More resilient. I will admit, a couple of times I drove by Aldi just to see if I could spit at it from my car window. I must confirm, I had to stop my drive by spitting because it only sadly landed on my left arm. I'm back at Aldi now. We are both healed from our breakup, not with the dude... we don't care about him. He can go "you know where." I mean, the temporary breakup that Aldi and I had. Consistently love this store. It's clean and the employees are friendly. They recently installed self-check out and although everyone isn't used to it, there is only one real checker now, so you have no choice sometimes, but to try it out! I wasn't a fan until recently, but when you think about it... you're already bagging your own groceries here, so hey... why not? If this new self service check out and self service "return your cart" from the parking lot feature will keep the prices reasonable, I'm all for it!! The daily deals and specials are always worth a look. As soon as you walk in, you'll see the produce and fruit specials of the day and they never disappoint. I have a mini side hustle and I ALWAYS come here for eggs. Even thru COVID, it wasn't worth it for me to shop around. I don't have a COSTCO or Sam's club card anymore, so I do a little extra, but I do save money NOT buying things I don't really need. The cashier lady at Aldi is so rude (She's an Asian lady maybe in her late 40's or 50's with a brassy hair color! So I did my grocery today after work. I only have 15 items ,I used the self serve register and rang up my groceries paid for it , and then while I'm bagging my things. Didn't know this cashier lady was behind me then she just grabbed my receipt thats still attached to the machine , she took a glanced on it. Then she was like pointing on my mangoes ,she was like is that 2lbs? I was like its not even by weight it was sell per piece. She probably can't find something wrong, feels like she's accusing me of stealing??? She better be sure before she accused someone or she could have just asked me, don't you mind me checking your receipt? Or can I check your receipt really quick. LOVE this grocery store. It has all your basic needs. It's not a huge store so don't expect to have 10 options for one type of item. There are a lot of times when I cannot find what I'm searching for and have to drive over to Smart and Final to purchase what I'm missing. The best part about this grocery store is their PRICES! They're generally a slight bit cheaper then other places. They don't sell items that are really "Name brand". Like, for example if you're searching for chips in their chip isle they're all brands you've never heard of. You wont be seeing Lays, Fritos, or Hot Cheetos at Aldi. I do agree with the other reviews that the cashiers aren't the most friendly. There will be a lot of times that I will go to pay and by the end of the experience the only thing the cashier says to me is the amount I owe. They definitely do try to rush you to place your card into the machine the second they start scanning so they can get you out of here ASAP. The pro about that is that the lines will go by fast but I can see why that would rub people the wrong way. read more

The way I was introduced to Aldi was from a Tehachapi country girl in Bakersfield. Yeah, imagine that? Do not worry, its a short review. A lot of pros more so more then the cons and hears why. Decent can goods with a diversity of products. I actually found pinto beans and black beans. Frozen goods and frozen seafood for reasonable economical prices. ok cons. Please bring a quarter especially if you require a cart. I absolutely HATE shopping carts but in this case I always find the best deals in grape seed oil. Yeah, I am a funny lady when it comes to my oils. Cheese selection is ridiculous. Pasta selection is ridiculous. My point being you will need a shopping cart in this location. Then You pack your own goods. Your first visit might be a learning curve as to how to obtain and return a shopping cart but otherwise in a weird way it reminds me of a dumie down Trader's Joe's but no fancy labels. so more for your buck. I love this grocery chain, and trust me, it's like 3x better than ALDI in Berlin, Germany. So far I like FV and Whittier location, not much a fan of SA location (because the demography of people shop there). What's good about ALDI? Decent selection, small enough to finish all your grocery shopping within 30 mins but big enough to get almost everything you need. German chocolate and chocolate covered almond are delicious. (Chips are just ok) I don't buy preserved food so it's hard for me to rate if their own brand ready to eat food good or bad. I enjoy getting all my basic needs here 30 mins before closing and almost no crowd. organic egg, almond milk (unsweetened), thin sliced pork chop, organic banana and some veggies/fruits are basically what I can live on:XD Store is spotless, restroom is also clean without any odor. Staffs are always friendly and line never get too long. The only complaint is, if you are searching specific ingredient for some recipe they might not have it, like "spinach" they actually out of it for about 2 weeks that I had to source out to Trader Joe:)' read more

First time here and excited to try, let's just say I will never be back. I've worked in customer service my entire life and let's just say it's very bad here. The guy at the check out was not pleasant with me, and super rude to the guy behind me. Seemed put off that we were entering his line. I guess if you're going to let your cashiers sit, customers bag their own groceries, and charge a quarter to ensure that staff don't have to bring your cart back, your going to have the laziest people want to work here. I come here weekly to pick up my grocery basics - everything from avocados to oranges and everything in between. Their cartoons of eggs are the cheapest I've seen and they go anywhere from $.20 a box to $1.70, (but on average you could probably get away with a box that's $.70 so it's a real bargain.) They do carry name-brands like Green Giant, Del Monte, etc but I've never had any problems with their store brand canned/boxed items. They also usually sell really beautiful orchids that I sometimes buy for my grandma. You don't always know what they'll carry, but for the super cheap prices I'll be back week after week to score some major discounts! read more

Not your typical grocery shopping experience. I see a lot of reviews about rude and pushy staff. The whole point of Aldi is low prices. How do they achieve this? They have very low overhead and are deliberately short-staffed. You have to rent your cart with a quarter so that you have to return it to the store to get your quarter back. They don't pay anyone to fetch carts. Yes you have to bag your own groceries. They don't pay anyone to do this for you. They have very few cashiers at any given time so yes, they push you to hurry and pay and push you aside after so you can bag your groceries so they can ring up the next customer. All of this is to reduce the amount of money they spend paying employees so you can get out of there paying less than half what you normally would at a supermarket. They don't have time to deal with Karens. I've been coming here since they opened and I'll admit that my first experience was an eye opener. It definitely takes some getting used to. Now this is my first stop when I need groceries. I love the efficiency and no BS compared to regular markets. You can find unique items every week that you might not expect. read more

I've experienced better, all right: Trader Joe's. Yeah, I got the inevitable comparison out of the way. I'll also mention right now that I am an unabashed member of the Trader Joe's cult. One of the first things I did when I moved to CA was to visit Trader Joe's and call my friend to tell him about the booze aisle. Apparently, ALDI sells a highly-rated single malt Scotch and a highly-rated sparkling wine. You won't find them at this location, and don't waste your time looking elsewhere in the US. What are we left with? A Fresh and Easy by any other name, and I don't get the appeal of that place, either. I suppose if I lived a lot closer (within walking distance, say) I might shop here once in a while. But, I don't, so I won't. The next time that you travel overseas, I suggest that you visit a real ALDI. BTW, I emailed ALDI a week ago to ask about the availability of that single malt. They haven't answered me yet. As someone who purchases groceries to meal prep for two for the whole week, my main purchases are always vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, meat and on some occasions other types of snacks. I haven't tried most of their Aldi branded products but I love their hummus selection. The spicy or roasted red pepper is my favorite. The container has lasted me for up to a month without mold, funky looks/smells or weird perspiration. There's a great selection of healthy and organic snacks as well if you're looking for less-guilty pleasures like I do. I also recently purchased pita scoop chips and they're amazing with the hummus or just to snack on. Veggies and fruits have their weekly sales but even when they're not on sale, their cost is less compared to other supermarkets. You can always check their website for the current and following week's ads. Keep in mind though, your location's ad may differ a bit but nonetheless, budget friendly prices!! Tips to shop at Aldi: - Bring a quarter or always keep one in your car for this purpose. You put a quarter in to get a cart and once you return your cart, you get your quarter back. - Check out their alcohol selection. There are some inexpensive name brand wines that are pretty good. Not top notch, but good for the nights you come home from a long day of work or school and just want to wine down. - Don't ignore their home section! It was odd to have a random home section in the center of a grocery store but there are pretty good deals sometimes ranging from woks/pans to college dorm gear. It varies depending on the time of the year - they had a giant wok on sale for $9.99 once and it was all gone by the time I got there :( secretly hoping it'll show up again in the future. - You pack your groceries yourself but I don't mind it at all. Super clean store, friendly cashiers, and low prices? No other grocery store can compare right now, Aldi's is my favorite! read more

We come to this Aldi pretty often for our groceries. Today, we had a pretty bad experience with one of your cashiers Robert. Usually, when we buy toilet paper (72pk), we are able to keep it in the cart at checkout and cashiers scan it from there. So today, we put the all the groceries on the conveyer belt besides the toilet paper, even pulling the cart next to the cashier for his convenience. Robert showed us attitude and said that we had to pull the toilet paper out of the cart. We responded with "It's heavy," and Robert responds back "It's not heavy." We then say I'm injured and can't lift anything heavy. What kind of service is this? I'm sorry if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but that's not how you treat your customers. read more

Growing up shopping at Aldi in Germany, I was pretty excited to see them opening all over SoCal this year. This is our closest location so far and we came here to stock up on old favorites. While the products are different, the set up, idea and prices are the same. You pay about half or less of what you do at other stores. Everything was very fresh and great quality, good meats and cheeses, tons of freezer and items that keep, as well as weekly specials on non food items. Service was fantastic, not very busy, great hours and easy parking, we will be coming here to shop every so often, I can't wait for more of their locations to open. read more

Woot! I've been eyeing this supermarket chain that is opening locations in Anaheim, Buena Park and Fountain Valley. This review is for the Fountain Valley location. This store is located where the old Grocery Outlet was at before it closed down, in the shopping center across the street from Starbucks/Gamestop/Boomers. There's a CVS in the same shopping plaza While the Grand Opening is this Thursday, the supermarket actually allowed shoppers to enter the store today as part of a soft opening - and if you want to avoid the expected mad rush on Thursday. It's also somewhat of a cross to Trader Joe's in that there are certain products made exclusively for Aldi - their version of TJ's "Two Buck Chuck" wine is "Winking Owl". There's also a good selection of "imported" European chocolates for under $2 too. I spent nearly an hour browsing the place (and I won't lie, taking in the A/C as a refuge from the heat this week). What really sets apart this place is the prices and the variety - you can find all sorts of groceries at rock bottom prices. I found a carton of dozen eggs for just a dollar, for instance. One of the biggest draws about Aldi is it's "knockoffs" of popular brand name products - like Frosted Flakes - a box of frosted flakes cereal is only $1.29 (compared to $4 for the name brand version). The produce section is neat and color-coordinated - its a very pleasing sight to the eyes. One thing to note though - you won't get a full shopping experience - I found that the selection was very lacking. There wasn't a deli, I was looking for a prepared meals/ready to heat section - and the only area I found that in was frozen foods. For a store that's considered the "distant cousin" of Trader Joe's, they are seriously lacking on food selection. They had a few aisles full of "everyday household goods" - really out of place for what I felt could be space utilized for a deli or something. That being said, I did manage to snag a few deals on some items I would've paid for elsewhere at a higher price - but I don't know if I'd go out of my way to shop here. All the employees were friendly/smiling and seemed happy to be there. Parking was easy because the shopping center is kinda dead. Some things to note : It's 25 cents to "rent" a shopping cart for your trip. You get your quarter deposit back when you return your shopping cart to the proper place. This helps keeps their prices low because they don't have to pay someone to gather up all the stray carts. This also doubles as a possible money making opportunity for someone who just happens to have the time to gather up all the stray carts and return them for a quarter each =P. Bring your own bags or pay for one - but it's 2016! You should have a bunch of reusable totes by now! If you don't, Trader Joe's offers the best value and size reusable totes for a buck each. read more

Aldi's not for everyone, but as a devout minimalist, it's definitely for this kid. Read about the Aldi way and you'll understand just how cleverly they're run, priced, and stocked. I have zero problem trying a cheaper off or store brand once to see if it sucks, and they very rarely do. Big fan of Aldi in general. A good place for shopping on a budget and grabbing essentials, only thing to keep in mind is selection of brands are nonexistent. If you want mexican hot sauce, there is tapatio,.. if you want jar salsa, there is hernandez. So, no room for being picky. Very similar to Trader Joe's, the options are curated to provide a good price, keeping an open mind will provide a chance at finding a personal favorite. I've been to several locations and usually you will find the same items so lil diff from store to store. Most spots are fairly small, like a neighborhood supermarket or TJs. As I said, essentials can be found... like bananas, apple, grapes, lettuce, yams, tomatoes, cheese, bacon, pasta, ham, eggs, meat, diary, and etc. Also, noticed at each store I've shopped, the location is super clean and organized. I can get in and out with 2 bags full of groceries under 30mins. Probably a reflection on how well run the company is and the format of the business. Some deals I got last night to stock up for the weekend: ground sirloin (90/10) for $4/lb., dozen eggs for a buck n change, carton of half n half for $1.50, pound of bratwurst just under $3, 10lbs bag of russet potatoes just under $3, loaf of 100% wheat bread for $1.69... pretty much everything was cheaper than the bigger store with the same quality. Definitely, flexibility is needed. Certain items or trim of meats needed for a recipe won't be available, so occasionally a stop at a bigger store is required. But daily needs are usually fulfilled at Aldi! read more

I guess I would return if I wanted to buy a handful of items. I would NOT come here again to fill my fridge and cabinets. I would rather pay more to have someone bag my groceries for me and pay for brands that I am familiar with. 98% of the products in this store are names I've never heard of. Please note...You pay a quarter to use their shopping cart which you must return to receive your quarter back. If you don't have your own bag, you have to purchase plastic or fabric. You're then sent over to a counter to bag your own stuff. Too much of a hassle for those on the go, like me. So, I won't be back unless it's to purchase one or two things. Check the expiration date on some of the foods. I notice their orange juice and yogurts were expired or very close to expiring. read more

This location is no longer requiring masks. I'm 8 months pregnant and my husband and I take safety very seriously. It was a disappointing decision to make, but we have decided to stop shopping at Aldi's. We'd rather spend more in safer stores. If you're a non-masker this is the place to go! **Just read a review from a day ago from someone who was treated "rudely" because she was NOT wearing a mask, and she should have been kicked out! How dare you think you're above everyone else. Just put the mask on to protect others and the EMPLOYEES who are there to serve your grocery needs, not risk their lives! So they do require masks, but it's not enforced. And I don't blame the employees, but where are the managers walking around to assist with confrontations? I think it's the just the HB atmosphere. Yeah. I'm pissed every other time I go to THIS Aldi my Apple Pay will not work. The ONLY register that doesn't work for Apple Pay is the one that they are "required" to keep open. It's embarrassing to get ready to pay and then find out the Apple Pay doesn't work. I've complained multiple times over the course of 4 months and nothing's changed. I literally used Apple Pay at the Arco down on Newland and Warner 10 minutes ago and I come here and it doesn't work. I used Apple Pay at Trader Joe's yesterday too. The people that work here are relatively nice. It's just a pain in the ass to have to try to shop here because I don't want to carry my purse while I have to carry my groceries because they do not have hand baskets, only carts. God I love your stuff but seriously fix this issue it's annoying. The Aldi in Bristol doesn't have this problem. Why can't you fix this? read more
