I went in to Aldi's today after seeing a post online somewhere. I had heard of Aldi's from coworkers who live in manassas and they say they do most of their grocery shopping there. So the layout makes it seem like a warehouse or the commissary on base. They don't have a lot of name brand items but they have a lot of great stuff. This is the place you want to go to for basic items and when you need to stock up your pantry. I got a 3 lb bag of sweet potatoes for 1.29! The cart situation is that you need to insert a quarter to get one but you get it back when you return it. Bring your own bags too as they do not provide paper or plastic. Oh and somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's debit and cash only? All in all great place if you want to save some money. read more

Aldi is an acquired taste, but it's worth figuring out for the cost savings! Tips- - Bring your own bags! They do have them available for purchase, but bringing your own is greener and cheaper - Bring a quarter to unlock your cart. You get the quarter back when you return the cart to it's proper place. - Be open to Aldi brand names items! They are good and marked by a double money backed guarantee (they'll replace the item & give you a refund). We've been happy with at least 90% of what we've purchased! - Don't be too picky. Instead of 6 peanut butter options, they'll have one. But that's okay, because it's good peanut butter! - Be ready to bag your own groceries at the end. Pros- - Great prices! They keep their costs low by charging for bags, making sure carts are returned, and for having you bag your own groceries. They pass the cost savings into the customer, which is very cool! - Lots of gluten free and organic options. - They have all of your basics and many specialty items available. Ex: I was able to get Spanish jamon (ham) just like I've eaten in Spain! - The store is clean and well stocked. Their staff is always friendly and quick! Cons- - I don't love their parking lot, especially since the gym next door is popular and overflows in front of Aldi. - I sometimes feel rushed. The cashiers are so quick and I get flustered trying to empty my full cart with as fast as they're ringing stuff up. - They don't have as much stock as a regular grocery store. Sometimes you have to stop by another store on your way home to fill in the gaps. I do most of my routine shopping elsewhere, but like to come to Aldi every few months for a large pantry stock up shop! Favorites include - baking supplies, oils (olive, coconut, canola, etc), flour/sugar, stevia packets, canned tomatoes, cartons of broth, salsa, pasta, pasta sauce, Parmesan cheese, and so much more! I think it's a lot of work for weekly trips, but appreciate that I can easily stock my pantry for a fair price. read more

They have beyond great pricing. Their regular prices are the same as what other stores advertise in their circular. They have a decent selection of organic produce and the prices on their raw almonds and other nuts are quite a bit lower than I've seen anywhere else. You need to bring your own bags and a quarter to rent the shopping cart. Also, plan on browsing the aisles for a little bit. Their layout can take some getting used to. The only con's that I can't get everything I need here. I end up going to a competing grocery store for several items every week but the list of things I buy elsewhere has gone down a lot since it first opened. read more

Overall great store, low prices, decent selection of items! However they need to have more staff on the floor when it's busy! I was there tonight & they only had 3 people! Also their staff needs to get trained on better customer service, I asked a girl for some help, she was not very friendly and didn't provide me with good customer service! Went to the Aldi in Fairfax the first time and it was... interesting. It was neither terrible or amazing but I can't see myself shopping here much. I knew about the quarter for a cart policy they had and that was actually pretty cool. Good thing there weren't many shoppers or someone might have been gritting their teeth watching me fiddle around with the cart lock. Once inside, it was bare bones, usually 1 or two brands for each item. I was here to shop for my brand new apartment and empty pantry so I needed a little of everything. Slowly I made my way through each and every aisle. Eyes taking it all in and hands grabbing stuff every two meters. It's lacking in variety unfortunately but okay for basic shopping. I was disappointed with the produce section which was filled with sad looking fruits and vegetables. In general, prices were lower but premium items like cheeses and cured meats cost about the same as Trader Joe's. There was only one open checkout line, but the lady was extremely fast. Be sure to bring you own bags or it will cost you. Even better, get some reusable grocery bags. However, the redeeming factor was their amazing inexpensive chocolates. I grabbed three different bars and they were all hits. I think for me, I'll probably stick to doing my grocery shopping at H-Mart that's less than a mile away because of fresher produce, larger selection, Asian goodies, and similarly low prices. But, I will stop by again for delicious Aldi chocolate and skip the carts and bagging. read more

Each visit to Aldi's has been remarkable in that i always feel like I'm in a candy store (aka hardware store)and want to buy everything I see. And every employee I've spoken to is pleasant, and seems happy to work there. They are doing something right, and that's an understatement. Forget the brand names you're used to. Everything they carry tastes just like whatever the best brand is and costs half as much everyday. They basically guarantee you'll like the quality, but honestly, you won't, rather, you'll love it. Checked out the new Aldi in Fair Lakes this morning. Walked up to find the grocery carts were chained together. I didn't see any sign explaining this - and thought perhaps there were some unchained carts inside. I spotted two by the checkout lines - and overheard someone saying you have to pay a quarter to use a cart. I don't carry change anymore - and when I tried to take an empty cart, the checkout guy said he needed the cart. (Apparently, the employees also have to go outside & pay a quarter to get a cart, so I couldn't blame the guy.) I told him I didn't want to pay a quarter for a cart - and he told me I'd get my quarter back when I checked out - but since I didn't have a quarter, I told him this was becoming too big a hassle. At which point, another employee and a couple of people in line started laughing - so I gave up and went to Target. I guess the idea here is to cut down on cart theft, which might actually be a problem. But - what's to stop a cart thief from depositing a quarter and stealing a cart anyway?. The 25 cents is going to stop him? (If Fair Lakes security stopped the thief, he could always say he paid his quarter and was taking it out for a test drive.) I noticed other reviewers saying you have to pay for grocery bags, and they don't take credit cards, etc. The list goes on. The Fair Lakes Walmart and Target have bigger, better grocery selections, the people are friendly, and you don't have to remember to bring a quarter. read more

Love my Aldi! I spend less that $55 a week on breakfast, lunch, Dinner and snacks for the whole week. Everything is fresh, everything is easy to find. There's no fuss, no muss. Great shopping for basics and a few unexpected. I love the produce section, the meat section, the best is the Kale Salad in the refrigerated section - if you've not tried, do so.. it's really good. It's mostly non-name brand and they're a smaller store so the selection isn't astounding, but the prices are awesome! I got fresh blackberries for .89 cents and grapefruit for .39 cents. They also have a ton of gluten free snacks, baked goods, and frozen foods. If you enjoy a good bargain I would come here! They might not have everything you need but it's a good first stop. read more

What's not to love? It's well stocked, and has unbeatable prices. Happy to compromise if needed for substituting items that they might not have. I have shopped there 5 times so far, and it is our new primary grocery store, no question. Also the check out personnel are super nice. The customer service here is lacking. Don't shop in this Fairfax location unless you have plenty of spare time. There's no quick in or out. The check out line is long. I say line because there's only one. Many registers but only one will be open. You can actually drive a little further to Walmart, park, shop and be checked out before you get through the line at this ALDI. A guy came and opened a second register, I stepped over and a lady was in front of me. The guy said I would have to get back in the other line because he was only checking her out. I lost my place in the original line and had to go to the end and start over. read more

Decided to give it a try. Outside of the store looked ok. The carts were all chained together. Asked several people how to unlock them and one lady was like put a quarter in. I asked if I could get her cart and she ignored me. I didn't know you would get your quarter back. Went inside cart less. Very small store. Vegetables and fruit looked old. They were out of bananas. One person was working the floor and the other at the register sitting on a chair. Seems kinda lazy to me. They don't bag your stuff they just put it in another cart at the end of register. This grocery store has good prices. I saved about $20 compared to wegmans. They had their own brands of food that were almost the same looking and tasting as the name brand foods. The only complaint I have about Aldi is the shelves being disorganised. There was food in the ground, and the shelves were a mess. read more

My husband and I both felt like we were shopping in a foreign country... which would be cool if we were feeling flexible and cheerful on vacation trying to cook a couple meals. Someone's review said this would be a great place to restock your pantry so we brought the kids and tried to do that after our kitchen remodel. No go. Bought a futon from Aldi last saturday but couldn't pick it up until today. We asked the manager on duty if it would be alright to leave it there until we could pick it up and he said no problem. Spoke to the main manager on tuesday confirming we would pick it up today and she said absolutely no problem. My husband went to pick it up and unfortunately even though it said sold in big letters on the box and all managers knew what the deal was it was sold to another customer with no more in stock. The main manager was extremely apologetic and solved our issue quickly and efficiently. It was a stupid mistake on a workers part to have sold an already sold item but with great customer service mistake was fixed. People make mistakes but it takes calm clear headed thinking to fix them which is what happened today. I will always shop there! read more

I love shopping at this ALDI! Anyone choosing this option needs to accept it for what it is - small, fast, easy to get in and out... I keep reusable bags in my car, and typically just use my bag as opposed to getting a cart. I live close, it is on my way, and I go OFTEN. When I go, I am not comparing to Wegman's, Harris Teeter, Walmart, or Safeway. I know what I want, and where it is, and that they have "off brands", a small selection, and they're cheap. The knock-off Ritz crackers are not good, but the knock-off Triscuits are perfect... over time you learn what you do and do not like! Special recipes sometimes call for special trips to other stores, but for my daily consumption, this is my go-to store! The staff is friendly and helpful, and ridiculously fast at checkout (so much so that I haven't gotten really bad about ANY delay at any other store!) This has been a great addition to the Fairfax grocery choices available! read more

This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a negative review. I shopped in Aldi for the first time this week because I wanted to check out the new supermarket in Fairfax. I was unaware of the fact that they only accept debit cards or cash for payment. There were no signs warning of this either as I entered the store. After one hour and 45 minutes of shopping and a very full cart, I went to the check-out area. There was only one cashier on duty and it was rush hour on a Thursday evening. After scanning my entire cart of groceries, I tried to use my credit card for payment. When it did not work, I asked the cashier if the store accepted AMEX. She replied that they only took debit cards. Since I do not use debit cards, I asked her for a helpful suggestion. She said that I could use cash or put my groceries back and that she had a line of people waiting. I said that I did not wish to put my groceries back and that I was sure she did not want me to leave a cart filled with perishable food to spoil. Then I counted all the cash in my wallet and was short almost $20 to pay for the groceries. I asked to see the store manager to see if I could write a check for the remainder, leave an ID and return within the hour with the remainder of the cash. I explained that this was my first visit to their grocery store and that I did not know about the payment policy. He replied that I could put my groceries back and told me that he did not make the rules. He walked away while saying, "Have a great evening!" I requested that the cashier give my cash back and I left the store empty-handed. Aldi was the worst grocery shopping experience of my life! The store manager at Fairfax Aldi had no regard for me, the customer. His dismissive behavior told me that he could have cared less that I had spent the better part of my evening shopping there and had a cart filled with food, much of which was perishable. A good manager may have thought that based on the amount of groceries I was attempting to purchase, I might be a good repeat customer that he should try to help. Aldi had great prices on the few selections available in the store. Their customer service, however, was the worst I have ever seen. It was apparent that the store was poorly staffed and that the people employed there did not enjoy their jobs. I will not return to Aldi again. I have serious doubts that the Fairfax Aldi will survive with their employees' "customer doesn't count" attitude. Instead, I will continue to shop at Wegman's where the prices are good to great and the customer service is outstanding. I appreciate it when I am tired at the end of a workday and an employee of Wegman's helps me solve a problem with a smile or just approaches me to see if I need any help. It really is true.
