I dunno, I thought Aldi was run pretty well but this store in the short time I've lived in East Hartford has gone from bad to worse. Invariably they've been out of "stuff". Then this past year, the coolers went and products were even more limited until it was repaired. Okay those things happen. But recently some genius decided to move the produce section up to the front door (see how that works in the heat of the summer) and re-arrange the rest of the store shelves --- with no logic whatsoever. And today, most of the dairy was out of stock at 2 pm; I got the last quart of milk! Stores are successful for one my their managers and this place seems unmanaged; like a sinking boat being bailed out by the crew. You really need to resolve this stuff or you're not going to have a customer base for long. Shop-rite is right down the road. read more

My family has been shopping at this location for years, and it is my mother's preferred grocery store. My mother is elderly and has mobility issues, and I believe she likes this chain of stores because they are small, so everything is close together. I have never personally noticed that the prices are much better than those of Shop Rite, and when they are, I always notice a dip in quality as well. Their watery Greek yogurt springs immediately to mind. Regardless, it's my mother's preferred store, and previously, when she requested it of me, I would pick up her groceries here, since it's her money after all. I think that after today I won't be back. I was sent here by my mother to settle some issues with a receipt where a number of items weren't marked down as they should have been, and some produce needed to be returned because it'd spoiled two days after we bought it. Literally two days, by the way. It was purchased on Sunday, and I'm writing this on Wednesday, having just returned from the store. The cashier I interacted with was professional enough, and he immediately summoned a manager to handle the return. The manager was irritable and standoffish and seemed to regard this interaction as a total imposition, sneering that he wanted to know why the return hadn't been made three days prior. So basically why my eighty-year-old mother didn't immediately recognize the issues with the $190 receipt that she'd been given, with the dozens of items she'd purchased listed on it, turn the car right around, get her walker out of the back, and go back inside to raise the issue right then. Whose job is it again to get this right? Is it supposed to be our job? Are you people going to pay us to fix our grocery orders? You want us to do your job for you after we shop at your store? Is that it? And the manager disputed the validity of our claim because one of the items that wasn't discounted wasn't returned to the store, and there seemed to be a lack of understanding here: we didn't want to return the items at all, Aldi's could have kept the money for the disputed items; we wanted the discounts that should have been applied at the time credited to the card that was used to purchase them, and the money back for the rotten produce. We wanted the items, but for the promised, marked-down price. A store credit would have been sufficient as a compromise, and almost always is. But who has time to explain or work out a problem like this when everyone who works at the store all has exactly the same job, there's no customer service desk, and everything is done through the one register that's open? Especially when the manager shows up with a bad attitude and treats the customer like a problem. Why not just open another register, stupid? What are the other registers for? As it is the chicken that wasn't marked down probably went in the trash, and how flipping stupid is that? Such a waste. Frankly, this business model is stupid, and it sucks. Aldi as a store, sucks. At Shop Rite, this issue would have been handled within two minutes. They'd have given me a store credit and there'd have been no issues at all, and no food would have gone in the trash. The interaction would have been so unremarkable that I never would have thought about sitting down and writing a review, but maybe I should, because they're a lot better in pretty much every way than this place. I don't ever want to have words with anyone when I do my shopping, and after all the stupid crap I've put up with from this location, I've had enough. There was the incident last winter where a cashier used our grocery purchase to buy himself some eggs, and we had to go in and dispute it. I cannot count the number of times I've gone to this store and gotten the stink-eye from people because I expected them to honor their "double-back-twice-as-nice" policy, usually with bits of produce that went bad within two days, each incident resulting in our having to drive three miles out of our way to return this disgusting rotten crap that should have been thrown directly into the dumpster rather than being placed out on the floor. You know what, if we're going to be driving three miles out of our way just to shop at your store, I do want the double-back policy honored. Sorry. Why do the people who work here always seem to believe that the customers are ripping them off? Why do they treat customers like they're a problem? This is also the only grocery store where I've literally seen a rat hanging out under the produce section. Just chilling there with his little rat self, waiting for the lights to go out. So, I'm done. I've told my mother this as well. That from now on, if she wants me to pick up her groceries, I'll be buying from one of the innumerable other chains in the area. She will likely continue to shop here, and I hope you jerks appreciate her business. Her fondness for this store is the only reason this isn't a 1-star review. I'm done and good riddance. read more

I thought everything in Aldi was organic... sadly that's not true.. sure their prices are low but that only makes my skeptical as to how they can keep it so low... is the product really of good quality if yes how come their competitors can't offer such great prices then... nd that worries me....I think I'll stick to Whole Foods despite the cost. Fantastic store! I'm not one to care for aesthetic when grocery shopping so long as it means I get a better deal, but this place is actually kept up pretty nicely. Their gluten free brand has been a life saver. I had given up on gluten free alternatives because they're too expensive (so I just didn't eat things like bread or pasta). Now I can enjoy them once in a blue moon without it hurting my wallet! We got an entire cart full of things. Like, I'm talking literally the cart was full from the bottom up more than half way to the top with stuff..and it only came to $119. WHAT. A STEAL. The parking lot is nice too. Very big. Easy to get in and out of. Over all I'm very satisfied with what they offer, both products and prices. The cashiers were nice as well! read more

A hidden gem of a supermarket, if you look hard enough. Let's start with the fact that Aldi's are very hit and miss. This particular location won me over when I stopped by recently for the first time. Aldi's is known for low prices, varying selection and German items. Will you always find what you're looking for? Probably not. Can you find some great products with awesome prices? Absolutely. A fresh Dole pineapple for 99 cents? Yes please! Natural peanut butter for $1.49? Don't mind if I do! Their produce section was heavy on the sales, but kind of skimpy on the selection. Everything else seemed to be stocked generously. The overall selection for non-perishable items at this location was quite good. For the special diet folks, they have a lot of gluten-free and even vegan items. This includes baked goods like cookies and other treats that you wouldn't expect to be dairy-free. As another commentator mentioned, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see that most items they carry do not contain high fructose corn syrup. The ingredient lists in general are shorter than those filler-laced ones common in most American supermarkets. The service was a bit shaky. I walked up to a register and the cashier said she'd be right back. She was out of sight for a few minutes, so I ran back to my car to grab some reusable shopping bags that I forgot. I came back and still no cashier around, but it wasn't long before someone finally came out. While their staff may not impress you, the prices probably will. I'll be coming back soon! read more

Love Love Love Aldi.... Im glad I know Aldi from past five years.... This store is quite a small supermarket however all my needs are covered under this superb store. Recently renovated and stands out way better than any other supermarket store. The staff is excellent n friendly. Not only do they carry local produce (non GMO / Organic) they have plenty other items like household decors, house hold items for way too good price. Aldi is one of my favorite places to grocery shop (next to Trader Joe's, which is owned by the same parent company), so I'm going to do my best to not repeat all the good things other Yelpers have said. Usually eating healthy is synonymous with expensive, but not when it comes to Aldi. My staples are: frozen fruit, bananas (44 cents/lb), (massive) garlic cloves (99 cents for three), organic marinara without sugar added ($1.69 each), and organic salsa (under $1.99). I also will buy their avocados (under $1 each), grapefruit (under $1 each), berries (under $2/container), and mushrooms (around $1/container) when they're on sale. And they have random healthy finds like organic coconut oil, fruit leather, and almond butter. When I travel, I love the Bolthouse Green Goodness smoothies. I also love their baking aisle, where you can get items like cans of pureed pumpkin and golden raisins for a steal, and their random rotation of household goods and kitchen items. I've never had an issue with the service, and the staff are always helpful and friendly to me. My two gripes with Aldi are that they don't always have everything I need (their produce section tends to be very seasonal), they don't take credit cards (gotta get that cashback) and they don't accept coupons (which I use frequently). To that last point, Aldi may not accept coupons, but their regular prices are comparable to other grocery store sale prices--and in some cases even cheaper. read more

I love ALDI with a passion -not for everything but for most. Owned by the same German chain that owns Trader Joes, you're going to find similar items, like packaged imported German kuchens/cakes/chocolates. Surprisingly good quality, too. Whats great about ALDI (in a socialist regimental kind of way) is that once you know the layout, one store is the same as the next. So you can mske a list and shop fast. Some stores carry X and others Y, but essentially you will find the same items store to store in the same general area. Shopping in different ALDIs can be tremendous fun finding items you've never seen in yours. (can you tell I'm old?) Like we discovered some stores have a triple chocolate cake that is stupendous.. BTW - check the ingredients on the "fresh" baked bc RARELY will you see corn syrup as an ingredient - that says a lot to me. In fact, as a rule, ALDI's does not use a lot of corn syrup in any of their store brands. But you must check ingredients if that's your issue (it's one of mine). BAKED GOODS - very good (particularly for the price). Like "gourmet" cookies in plastic clamshells made with butter, brown sugar, etc. They recently added a choc chip brioche of all things and it's pretty damned great and if you've read my reviews on baked goods, you know I'm a baked goods nazi. If I'm paying I expect a lot. PRODUCE - agreed this store was lacking in produce but they have stepped up in that dept and they are competitive now with the larger ALDIs in the area. Their prices are great and lately there is a bigger better selection of mostly very good quality veggies and fruit - as good as any supermarket. I only wish they carried fresh herbs. FRESH MEATS - this is where ALDI and I part ways. Mostly I don't like their meats with the exception of corned beef brisket which is fatty and rich and very good (corned beef SHOULD be fatty and rich). The rest of the the meat selection doesn't seem as fresh as I expect meat to be. There are always good deals so I try to keep an eye out but I am VERY careful because much of their "fresh" prepackaged meat has *that* look - like it's going to be recalled due to mass production/taint issues. So I tend to steer clear of it unless something strikes me as excellent or we're in the midst of a meat emergency. BTW, their process meat like franks are ridiculous and fabulous. I am completely gaga for their brats and other specialty dogs AND their cheese dogs - this is a German company, after all. Not only are they cheap and salty and probably bad for you, but they are soooo delicious I will make them tonight because just thinking about them makes me crave cheese dogs! COLD CUTS, BACON and CHEESE - pretty good to excellent, we like their upper end cuts and bacon selections (bacon SELECTION!) Their cheeses are routinely excellent. DAIRY - excellent yogurts, sour cream, butter, margarine, milk, eggs & egg substitutes, etc etc etc. Juices can surprise. FROZEN - good to excellent quality on everything. YMMV. They actually carry a gyro/souvlaki kit that's nearly as good as going to a Greek restaurant. Make your own tzatziki sauce though. REFRIG CASE SPECIALS - they have a specialty dairy case in all the stores, showcasing limited stock or special buys, so you'll find items like salted caramel latte coffee creamer and the like. CANNED GOODS. Great. Comparable with everyone else's, even name brands. It's mostly hit, not too many misses, salad dressings, olives, pickles, condiments amazingly priced and every bit as good as name brands. CLEANING GOODS, CEREALS, PET FOODS, DRINKS - The coffee in a bottle is comparable to Starbucks in the bottle. Don't do soda and don't care for the water. The cleaning stuff is good if you're needing something to hold you but I prefer name brands, plastic wrap is thin but in a pinch, they're cheap enough that you don't feel used and abused. Love the cereals and baking ingredients. I would not feed my pets their food - I won't risk doggy diarrhea. HOWEVER - I had to buy cat food to catch a possum and it was surprising - excellent quality. Not stinky & cruddy looking (I bought the fish) - pretty damned good at 39 cents a can. . Yes I am mad about the place -not for every little thing, but they're getting there and lately I do A LOT of my shopping at ALDI. read more

Prices are good. The regular crew on silver lane are personable and exceptional regardless of the bs thrown at them. It's amazing everything I shop for is in this small store compared to the big grocers. There are only four items I buy elsewhere because I don't like the aldi brands. Four. Always clean store, better produce than most of the other stores. It is incredible to me people would shop anywhere else. It's not second rate food. Virtually the same as major or store brands. Ridiculous things like milk which is the same milk that came out of the same cows. Chain store brand 2%=$2.69. Aldi 2%=$1.35. Literally saves me hundreds of dollars every month. read more

Raphael/Raphaelo is a very rude/disrespectful cashier in the East Hartford location. Several times I have seen him roll his eyes and shake his head at patrons he doesn't like. At first I thought he may have been having a bad day and everybody has bad days. But it happened each time I went in there. He is polite to certain customers and rude to others. Today I was in there with my 93 year old mother, who has a hard time walking, does things very slowly and doesn't hear very well. He was so rude to her, it broke my heart. He just wanted her out of the way so he could take the next customer. Her cart got stuck and she didn't have the strength to push it, he sat there and rolled his eyes and shook his head. I ran over to help her and I heard him say to the customers behind her, "I'm sorry about that". How incredibly sad Aldi's will allow a boy like this to serve their patrons. read more

I do 80% of my shopping at Aldi and absolutely love it. My shopping style at Aldi reflects the way I tend to cook. I cook mostly from scratch, centered around the fresh produce that looks freshest and priced the best. The veggies are usually complimented by some sort of vegetarian protein: cheese, eggs, tofu or plant-based frozen meats. I buy good quality sprouted wheat bread there for avocado toast with a nice drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. I also buy brioche rolls, and make some mean veggie burgers. Of course, salad greens are well-priced and fresh, so that also forms the basis for at least two dinner salads with Aldi feta during the week. Other staples: blocks of parmesan and asiago cheese which I grate and always have on hand in a mason jar in the fridge. That is simply delicious with Aldi's meatless meatballs and a simple homemade marinara. Well-priced grains, such as quinoa, steel cut oats, and rice (both jasmine and quick-cooking brown) also round out our meals. This happens to be my vegetarian style of eating, but Aldi has something for everybody. I like the price-point I see, and Aldi's commitment to better quality ingredients, and limited artificial dyes and flavorings. While some people might prefer to be able to choose from several brands of the same product, I like the simple Aldi shopping experience with excellent quality basic foods. My daughter enjoys buying some of the "knock-off" snack foods available, and often comments to me that they are superior to the name-brand foods they that inspire the Aldi version they are selling. read more

This gets two stars only because I LOVE Aldi. This location is terrible. Their produce and fresh sections are routinely both poorly stocked and stocked with stuff that is downright gross. Once they were selling an entire pallet of partially broken eggs. So gross. I'd recommend the Berlin Turnpike or New Park Ave locations instead, unless you're just buying chips and sugar. read more

I'm a big Aldi fan. The prices are great, and I love the absene of frills. However, the problem with this chain of grocery stores is that each one varies drastically. They should all have the same stuff, but the quality isn't anywhere near the same. Aldi seems to specialize in prepackaged food. If you're into frozen pizza or breaded chicken products, then this is the place for you. I tend to swing by for their great deals on produce. This is where the two star rating is coming from. This is the worst location I have seen for produce. Yesterday, March 5, 2013, I swung by for their advertised sale on organic apples and organic potatoes. The bags of apples all had rotten apples in them. I'm not talking a little soft. I'm talking so brown and rotten that they're caving in on themselves. I started picking through the different bags, hoping that one of them was passable. None were. The potatoes weren't much better. I ended up walking out of there with some frozen strawberries. Their frozen stuff tends to be great. Their real food....not so much. Like I said, this varies from location to location, so don't judge all Aldi locations on this one. read more

I liked Aldi's because the prices are reasonable. Recently, however, my husband and I were shopping there and I had to use the restroom in the front of the store while he was in back. I was waiting for the stall to open when a man came out, menacing me. I started screaming. No one came to check on what was happening, although there were employees within 20 feet. The man said, 'I'm a girl, I'm a girl." My husband got to me from the back of the store as I escaped, and the man was right behind me. I don't care if a gay or transgender person wants to use the restroom, but if a male pervert wants to pursue someone claiming he is transgender, it frightens me. I called Aldi's about the incident almost two weeks ago, and have heard nothing since. I am not going to a store where I can't use a restroom without feeling safe. read more

Not a good Aldi. Doesn't seem as clean as some others, or as well organized. Shelves were empty of some items I needed. Staff is variable from should-be-fired to very helpful. (Looking for help about an item not on the shelf, I found a staff member chatting with a co-worker. When I asked about the item; he smirked and told me that was exactly the item he was going to the back to check on. Then he disappeared.) One bad staff member can completely spoil the whole enterprise, like a rotten apple. This one not only acted as though he was clever and witty and we were stupid, but as though the store was his playground and customers an inconvenience. read more

I've had nothing but good experiences here. The staff are always willing to help even when in the middle of something. The prices are great and most of the knock off products taste the same, some better, than the name brand. People complain because there are usually only 1 or 2 cashiers but they are very fast, and its what keeps costs down. read more
