I decided to do the same while I'm here visiting New York. Instead of a key chain or a corny shot glasses, I know that these bags will be used. I love how colorful and sturdy they are. The registers were all pretty open. I headed to the closest one to me. The cashier was really nice! He rang me up and I headed out the door. This location is super clean and nice! It's really big too, a lot bigger than the locations back home for me. I'm happy I got a chance to go to one of my favorite stores in Syracuse, NY. It was the perfect ending to my trip.

I stopped into this location on Wednesday January 7th to cash in four lottery tickets. When I went…read moreinside I joined a line that had probably 6-7 people ahead of me. There was one cashier. A male worker was emptying garbage and a female was working at the sub counter. There weren't any customers as the sub counter, she was preparing packaged sandwiches for sale in the store. When I got to the register to cash in my tickets, she took them from me and went to the lottery terminal. She then realized the machine needed paper and began looking for it. She couldn't find it. She asked the male worker who shrugged and didn't help. She then left the register area and headed to the back of the store. She was gone several minutes. I turned around to the line that had formed behind me and apologized to those waiting. One person said "It's not your fault" which I agreed with but I told them I felt like someone should at least be acknowledging them. Nothing. Nothing from the girl who continued to expertly place stickers on the sandwich containers, nothing from the male employee. The clerk finally returns and says to the male "Can you believe not one of the managers answered" to which the male made some comment and the clerk said "I called every manager. Every single one and no one answered, not even Jess". At this point she asked the male to ring out the customers at the other register. Also a customer had come in for subs to be made. The male clerk rang out the line while my clerk looked in more drawers and cabinets then went to another area to look for paper. In the meantime the female working the sub counter had finished making the subs and brought them to the register for her to pay. She set them at the register I was STILL standing at, gave me a vague look as if wondering why I was there then took the subs to the other register, set them down and walked away. She then realized no one was ringing up this woman and asked the male clerk to ring that customer up. My clerk came back and brought me my tickets and said she was sorry but there wasn't any paper so she couldn't redeem them. I asked her for her name. Not so I could complain about her, but so I could report the absolute disrespect and unsupportive workplace she has to deal with. She did her very best and NO ONE would help her. Not her coworkers and not the managers. This non-transaction took almost 20 minutes. Knowing that the managers there did not care I called the corporate headquarters the next day (1/8) and spoke to a woman who put me through to Customer Service and told me if no one answered to leave a voicemail because they would want to talk to me. I left the voicemail. The next day after no response I filled out the online comment/complaint form and requested to be contacted. On Monday 1/19 I realized I had not been contacted and called headquarters again, only to get the voicemail again. Guess what....ZERO response. It's obvious where the lack of customer service, caring and concern comes from. It starts at the top. Three chance and three strikes. Never again Byrne Dairy!!

It's new to the young people, but older folks will remember. Now if they could just replace closed Tops's in Syracuse on the south side and Westvale as well as Ithaca on S Meadow Dr and Great American in Star Lake.

They're usually standard pricing but they have some nice deals and there's a good amount of variety. I didn't even know some of the drinks I used to pick up were still being made because most stores don't seem to carry them. I don't grocery shop here because there's other stores like Aldis that specialize in budget grocery shopping. However with the big storms it was nice to still be able to pick up a few things food wise even if it was more akin to gas station pricing. The meat, the drinks; and the subs are what I mainly go for. And so far it's been a 10/10 experience from those products. Staff is typically nice and I don't stand around long. It's a small store so it can get crowded on busy days like holidays seem to be popping off. But, for what I enjoy from the store at the pricing and quality I get and the convenience of having a literal 5 minute walk at most. It's my go to spot.

We bought fresh corn on our way out, definitely noticed a lot of varying price differences for the same items but I guess that's part of the experience! Our daughter had a donut and a hotdog from a food truck during our visit. I've also found dried fruit snacks here - including organic, non-GMO dried apricots covered in dark chocolate, very random beers (Bell's Smitten, Duvel, a variety of IPAs, typical American brands, and I even some Polish options - lots, in fact). The owner, Mike Alamo, is a New Yorker, so he truly understands the concept of a bodega / cornerstore grocery, and there's a great article about his store's opening over on Syracuse (dot) com - which I'm spelling out, and to which I'm purposefully not linking, since every time I do, Yelp deletes my reviews due to content. Since Mike also has a store in NYC, he keeps the inventory interesting - inclulding stocking something of which I'd never heard until recently: Choward's "Violet" Lavendar Mints. The only downside - and reason for the minus 1 star - is that after purchasing two packs, I noticed an expiration date of 3/11/11 and this was May 2014. :( I mentioned it to Mike tonight, and he didn't apologize or offer to replace/compensate in any way, which I felt was uncool (not that he had to). Fine. I just hope he really does re-stock these the next time he goes in to NYC, and that he starts being more aware of expiration dates. Note, also, the date on my Bell's Smitten Golden Rye Ale was bottled on 1/21/14, and - according to Bell's website - their ales only last 6 months, so again, I was pushing it with this product as well. Word to the wise: note expiration dates when you shop here. All that said, what are your other options in the area? Exactly. In sum, I like this corner store because it reminds me of and epitomizes the concept that Jennifer Pahlka, Founder and Executive Director at Code for America, describes in her "Bodega 2.0: A Business for Healthy, Walkable Cities?" article on LinkedIn, dated January 16, 2013.
