Entry Gate

After touring many mid-century modern structures, this is by far my very favorite! I would journey up to Midland, Michigan just to see this home alone. Now I want to go back to tour the gardens and see Dahlia Hill in full bloom in September and I would definitely schedule it with the additional homes that are open for tours at that time. I needed a quiet room for a zoom meeting and the Mary Grace Dow library arranged a conference room for me to use, free of charge! I wish I had time to explore this amazing library, so many cool and innovative things happening in one building. But here's even more in this magical town that Dow built, so plan ahead and see it all! Side note...tickets for adults are now $20 and be sure to buy anything you'd like from the shop while you're there because shipping was as much as the book when purchased online! Allow for a good half hour after the tour to enjoy the historical library with photos and letters from FLW.

Even the lily pond surrounding the home invites exploration.

Our tour guide was so delightful to listen to. She answered questions, told stories, and pointed out truly interesting features of the home and the Dow family. We loved our time there. It made a unique and happy memory in our week full of good memories! We're so glad we decided to take the tour!

Zilwaukee Bridge - Heading home after catering after 2 days at a yoga retreat

Zilwaukee Bridge

A bit of a boring one, the Zilwaukee Bridge carries I-75 and US-23 over the Saginaw River and…read moreconnects Zilwaukee with Zilwaukee Township. I was not able to get a photograph of the bridge as as super aggressive driver showed up and nearly caused an accident. The bridge opened to traffic in 1987 and has been plagued with problems. Some related to poor construction, some due to unexpected weather and some due to circumstances beyond anyone's control. Its construction ran massively over budget and was extremely delayed. The bridge carries four lanes in each direction with breakdown lanes on both sides. As it's an interstate, there is no pedestrian or bicycle lane. There is no toll to cross the bridge. It is located 5 miles north of Saginaw, Michigan when traveling on south and/or northbound I-75. I remember as a teenager when traveling up north with my parents to our cottage on a lake near Lewiston... either in the Spring, Summer and Fall months, there were times we had to wait in line with other vehicles for the drawbridge to open up to let freighters pass under and then after the bridge would close so traffic could move on their way. Usually our wait time could be up to 15 minutes or less depending on the time of day and the "flow" of traffic on the river! :) Such a great memory before the remodeling of this bridge. Currently, a vehicle keeps on cruising up and over the bridge driving 75 m.p.h. on 75 with cool views out your passenger window on the right of the Saginaw River. Facts: Construction started: 1979 Height: 125 feet Clearance Below: 120 feet Total Length: 8,000 Longest Span: 392 feet It opened: December 23, 1987 ( In time for Christmas) Construction End: September 19, 1988 At times during the day or early morning hours one can see fisherman on the shores fishing for carp, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye, perch and sunfish.

The annual pass is an easy decision for us since we end up going more than twice in a year. Whether it's exploring the gardens while there's a new outdoor art exhibit, checking out the butterflies in the conservatory exhibit in the spring, enjoying the rose and herb gardens in the summer, or enjoying the fall colors washing over Midland in the autumn, it's our favorite place in the area. Also a lovely venue for wedding ceremonies and naturally offers excellent scenes for formal photos. The facilities are great and should be improving with the new welcome center being constructed. While definitely child-friendly with the children's garden and school tours, if you're looking for somewhere to let your kid run around, you might find the mall or a park playground more accommodating.

Anyway, I bookmarked it with the intention of coming up here when the weather was nicer, and I finally got around to doing it over this past July 4th! (bonus points for them being open regular business hours during a holiday!) I drove the two hours and walked in and it only costs $15 for a single visit, $30 for a yearly membership. Nice! I wouldn't mind getting a membership, because it truly pays for itself. They have a gift shop in the front area where you pay with a few things to browse and purchase. Maps of the Gardens are by the register to take so you can see all the sights when here. Initially, I didn't know where to start so I wandered down the path to the left. This was towards the Estate Gardens, which were lovely by the way. The downside? I wanted to see the inside of the house but it was locked up. I'm not sure if they give tours, and there was nobody to ask. I continued walking and saw the Ribbit Exhibit which has about 13 different metal frog sculptures throughout. Lots of green areas to view, with some wonderful bridges as well. Eventually I was going to go to the children's garden, but it was starting to get hot outside and my leg and back were getting sore. I walked through the rose garden, which was nice, but on the smaller side. Eventually I ended up by the Educational center and kind of tired out by this point. I don't know how far I'd walked, but it felt like miles. The heat didn't help. Here's where I got frustrated with my experience. First, even with a map, it's easy to get "lost" here. Some paths are a dead end. Some lead you to now where, and it doesn't always connect back to the main pathway. There was at least two instances where I went to look at a bridge, then discovered a water fountain, and couldn't find my way out. There were several paths, but only one lead to the main drag. It's because I heard the golf cart that I was able to determine where to go. Also, they have limited bathrooms here. I don't need one every 5 feet, but I only was able to find two during my visit. The map says there's 5 bathrooms, but they're literally miles apart and you don't know where they're at because there's barely any signage for the bathrooms. If you have kids, or an emergency, I can't imagine this ending well. Also, a big one for me, which really spurred me docking a full star. No scooter rentals, or any form of alternative means for those of us who may need it. No, I'm not handicapped, but the zoo offers them for a charge, which I'm willing to pay. I would've stayed twice as long if I could scoot around the park, along with walking as my leg goes numb after about a mile or so. The good news to this? You can get a golf cart tour, but you have to book it in advance, and they're at select times. I would do that, but I didn't remember to book a tour in advance. But, maybe next time I can bring my own scooter so I can go further. Aside from that, the gardens are fabulous. I'll probably do another trip up to see the canopy walk and a few other things when it's a bit cooler in the fall and not 90 degrees with a 68 degree dew point. LOL. Worth every penny!

It is like a small Greenfield Village, but smaller and way less expensive, except for the train, which is a bit pricey, but they ride is quite long. Not too many places for kids to eat during the field trip, so that was a downfall. I would have liked to have looked around the ice cream and treat area, sounded yummy. Most of the kids liked the train ride, but it was a bit long for the littles, they got bored. I enjoyed going around the area, it was fun for me. The kids then got to see a comedy magic show. They absolutely loved it, I have never heard small children laugh out loud so much, so please let the gentleman in the picture who performed know he now has many new fans. We were able to walk around about two small buildings before we had to leave, so I did not get to see much more. My child enjoyed our time there and would like to visit again. For me, it was fun, but I don't know if I need to come back except if my other child wants to check it out.

I first came across the Midland County Courthouse when I was in Midland, Michigan for a business…read moreconference.  I noticed it when I was driving at night out of town looking for a supermarket.  The building kind of 'jumps out' at you because it is well lit.  That's not the only attraction about the place.  It is uniquely designed.  The shape of the building is attractive, strong and reassuring.  Not like a faceless, bureaucratic building at all. I must say, however, that an addition was put on the building, thankfully in the back, and it is a dull, glass and brick affair.  In the manner of such buildings that side tries to appear antiseptic and professional but comes off as intrusive to the eye. The main building that I am describing is much more a part of the community.  The cornerstone was laid by Professor Dow of Dow Chemical.  Much of the paint materials and other items on the outside of the building are or were derived from various Dow products.  Almost the entire courthouse, except for the addition, was made from local materials.  What an accomplishment! The building is decorated with historic paintings including images of representatives of local Native American tribes and pioneers.  It is a very touching set of scenes.  Along with the building comes a descriptive historical marker (read both sides!) and a wonderful tribute to members of the armed forces of the United States.
