I give the diamond a 3 only because who doesn't love baseball, am I right!? It was a beautiful night for baseball but the concessions were horrible tonight. We stood in line at a Great Lakes Grill from the 1st inning until the middle of the 3rd inning, so needless to say it was pretty slow service. We had a coupon for a free hot dog and was told they didn't have any of those left (at the second inning they run out of hot dogs!?) but they would downgrade me to a smaller hot dog and give me $1. I asked if they would just upgrade me to another hot dog, no go he just laughed. Then we ordered 2 large beers and was told the co2 was out but we could go to another stand if we wanted. I told her I would rather not stand in line for another 3 innings and told her to go to another stand to get our beer (which she did reluctantly). I felt a little sorry for the order take as he seemed kind of embarrassed about the whole ordeal but really had nothing he could do for us. I paid for our items and we were finally able to get to the reason for being here... having a dog and beer at a baseball game! Maybe it's just me but having a dog and beer is a staple for a ball game but this was very disappointing. Dow Diamond I hope you get your "loons" in a row for further games.

Great place to see a ball game, get some food and do some shopping. The park is very clean and the staff is friendly and professional.

Great place to see a ballgame ... and tasty, affordable food, considering it's a ballpark. There's really no better place to be on a summer night in Midland!

It is very nice and the ticket prices are very reasonable. The only thing to complain about would be the high prices for food and drink.

This visit marks our twenty-eighth visit to a Minor or Major League Baseball team. So, we have seen…read morea lot of positives, as well as things we would change about them. I will say that the staff is really friendly, and everything is still kind of new, since they have only been around since 2007. They have a fireplace for those cold days, and an unobstructed view of the field, while you are standing in line for food which reminded us of Indianapolis, Columbus, Charlotte, and several other stadiums. The Great Lake Loons charge major league prices for minor league apparel. Seriously, $34.99 for an on field hat? I can only recall two other minor league teams being this overpriced: Staten Island Yankees and the Frisco Rough Riders. Also, the men's apparel is downstairs, while the women's and children's are upstairs. For someone that has Parkinson's disease, this is a pain especially late in the day when I am tired, steps ain't happening; I had to search for the elevator. Next, the food had to be Aramark, since it was the stuff the Lexington Legends had before bringing in Dickey's BBQ, Donatos, and local food like a Beer-Cheese Burger. Also, when we travel to see different teams play, we like checking out their food specialties, or what is known in the region. For example, the Greeneville Astros had the Astro dog, which was a deep fried hot dog wrapped in bacon, and served with a dill pickle and fried onIons. With the Twins, it's deep fried Oreos, the Rough Riders had legendary Texas BBQ, and the Legends have the above-mentioned, Beer-cheese Burger. The Loons had a promotion during our visit called Wednesday Hump Day in which selected beers are $2.50 for an hour after the start of the first inning. Typically, other parks have something similar called, Thirst Thursday, but the price varies between $1 up to $2.00. Okay, I know it's only fifty cents, but still, try to follow suit with other minor league teams in regards to pricing, especially when you're trying to generate traffic at the ballpark. For example, the Asheville Tourists have had this promotion since the mid-80s. Currently, at each Thursday home game, regular domestic draft beer is $1, and craft beer on draft is $2.00. In the end, it was not a bad experience in regards to the effort the team displayed on the field, as well as the beautiful stadium with the exception of the steps, see photo. Their total Yochanan score is 74, which gives them 2 stars. Yochanan Score: 4 Stars - 90+ 3 Stars 80 - 90 2 Stars 70 - 80 1 Star 55 - 70

I also suggest they get a better app. I'd love to be able to purchase tickets through it, have my tickets electronically, use my NCG club card on it and load money into it to pay for concessions. All that aside the service is friendly, popcorn is fresh and the theatre and restrooms are usually clean.

After a minute or two, an employee, who I later found out from another employee was a manager named Georgia I believe, came over and started doing something at the bar facing away from me while I stood there waiting. She briefly looked back, made eye contact with me, and then returned to what she was doing without saying anything. I didn't initially think much of it, as there is rarely someone always stationed there. You usually just wait for someone to notice and come over. When she finished what she was doing, she turned around and asked, "Did you want something from the bar? I just closed it for the night." I assumed that meant ordering was still possible, so I responded, "Yes," to which she replied, "Well, I just closed it for the night." The interaction was confusing and not very pleasant. I ended up sticking to just pop and we proceeded into the theater. Later, around 10:30 pm, I went back out for a popcorn and drink refill but was told that the popcorn machine had shut down at 10:15 pm, so I returned to my seat with an empty bucket. I checked and saw that every movie showing that day had its last screening around 10 pm. Based on this, I assume the policy is to shut down popcorn 15 minutes after the last showing begins and to close the bar whenever the manager feels like it. That's an interesting way to run a theater, especially on a Friday night. We were the only people in our theater, and I couldn't help but hope that everyone else made a better choice by going to Saginaw or Birch Run for an Emagine or Celebration Cinema offering a better and cheaper experience. I've visited the Midland theater probably close to a hundred times over the past 5-10 years. The quality has never been particularly good, and sometimes it has been downright poor, like this night or the previous time when items were hanging in front of the screen during the Nosferatu showing, or other one of the many other times there have been issues. My only hope is that maybe this theater will eventually close and be taken over by a company willing to put more effort. Previously, lower prices could justify overlooking issues, but now it's somehow more expensive than Celebration Cinema or Emagine theaters, and the experience is dramatically worse at every level.

The annual pass is an easy decision for us since we end up going more than twice in a year. Whether it's exploring the gardens while there's a new outdoor art exhibit, checking out the butterflies in the conservatory exhibit in the spring, enjoying the rose and herb gardens in the summer, or enjoying the fall colors washing over Midland in the autumn, it's our favorite place in the area. Also a lovely venue for wedding ceremonies and naturally offers excellent scenes for formal photos. The facilities are great and should be improving with the new welcome center being constructed. While definitely child-friendly with the children's garden and school tours, if you're looking for somewhere to let your kid run around, you might find the mall or a park playground more accommodating.

Anyway, I bookmarked it with the intention of coming up here when the weather was nicer, and I finally got around to doing it over this past July 4th! (bonus points for them being open regular business hours during a holiday!) I drove the two hours and walked in and it only costs $15 for a single visit, $30 for a yearly membership. Nice! I wouldn't mind getting a membership, because it truly pays for itself. They have a gift shop in the front area where you pay with a few things to browse and purchase. Maps of the Gardens are by the register to take so you can see all the sights when here. Initially, I didn't know where to start so I wandered down the path to the left. This was towards the Estate Gardens, which were lovely by the way. The downside? I wanted to see the inside of the house but it was locked up. I'm not sure if they give tours, and there was nobody to ask. I continued walking and saw the Ribbit Exhibit which has about 13 different metal frog sculptures throughout. Lots of green areas to view, with some wonderful bridges as well. Eventually I was going to go to the children's garden, but it was starting to get hot outside and my leg and back were getting sore. I walked through the rose garden, which was nice, but on the smaller side. Eventually I ended up by the Educational center and kind of tired out by this point. I don't know how far I'd walked, but it felt like miles. The heat didn't help. Here's where I got frustrated with my experience. First, even with a map, it's easy to get "lost" here. Some paths are a dead end. Some lead you to now where, and it doesn't always connect back to the main pathway. There was at least two instances where I went to look at a bridge, then discovered a water fountain, and couldn't find my way out. There were several paths, but only one lead to the main drag. It's because I heard the golf cart that I was able to determine where to go. Also, they have limited bathrooms here. I don't need one every 5 feet, but I only was able to find two during my visit. The map says there's 5 bathrooms, but they're literally miles apart and you don't know where they're at because there's barely any signage for the bathrooms. If you have kids, or an emergency, I can't imagine this ending well. Also, a big one for me, which really spurred me docking a full star. No scooter rentals, or any form of alternative means for those of us who may need it. No, I'm not handicapped, but the zoo offers them for a charge, which I'm willing to pay. I would've stayed twice as long if I could scoot around the park, along with walking as my leg goes numb after about a mile or so. The good news to this? You can get a golf cart tour, but you have to book it in advance, and they're at select times. I would do that, but I didn't remember to book a tour in advance. But, maybe next time I can bring my own scooter so I can go further. Aside from that, the gardens are fabulous. I'll probably do another trip up to see the canopy walk and a few other things when it's a bit cooler in the fall and not 90 degrees with a 68 degree dew point. LOL. Worth every penny!
